AB  - Nowadays, rare earth elements (REEs) represent a group of emerging pollutants due to their growing application in industry and agriculture, hence, the environmental and human exposures undergone a steady spread. Since REEs can be a part of airborne particulate matter (PM), moss biomonitoring could be a tool for the assessment of their atmospheric deposition. In 2015, moss samples of Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. were collected at 212 sites across Serbia, and 16 REEs, including Lanthanides (La to Lu), Sc and Y, were determined in the samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The measured element concentrations were normalised according to different natural reference systems searching for the REE enrichment in the studied environmental samples, and their possible anomalies. The ratios of REEs, specified in the literature, were used to reveal the element origin. In this study, the order of REE abundance in the moss samples was similar to that found in other environmental compartments, which together with the obtained strong correlations among the elements imply their similar origin, probably geogenic. Nevertheless, the ratio La/Sm (5.1) entered the range that characterised coal combustion. In addition, the median enrichment factors (EFs) of the elements calculated according to typical crustal elements, Al and Sc, were not exceeded the value 5 which suggests slightly anthropogenic stake. However, high values of EF REEs (≈40) were obtained in the moss samples from certain regions of Serbia (south and northeast) characterised by the extensive exploitation of coal and mineral deposits, and their further manufacturing or combustion. The results of this study found that the moss is a sensitive tool reflecting the presence of REEs in atmospheric deposition even those in traces (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu).

Geochemical Fractionation and Risk Assessment of Potentially Toxic Elements in Sediments from Kupa River, Croatia

AB  - This study investigated the quality of Kupa River sediment using sequential extraction, ecological risk, and contamination indexes (Risk assessment code, Index of geoaccumulation, Enrichment factor, Ecological risk factor, Ecological risk index), determination of magnetic susceptibility of sediments, and statistical methods. The BCR sequential extraction technique was used for evaluating various element-binding forms. Most of the elements were considered to be immobile due to the high availability in the residual fraction. Lead was present mainly in the reducible fraction, while more easily mobile and bioavailable forms were predominant for cadmium and barium. Sediment samples from the river catchment exhibited low ecological risk. The most toxic element, Cd, is the main contributor to the total potentially ecological risk. Increased values of contamination factors have been observed for Zn, Cr, and Ba in some localities. Results of the comparison of element contents in sediments in a 15-year period (2018 vs. 2003) indicated that the situation with toxic element content in sediments along Kupa River improved formost of its course. Unfortunately, on the lower course of the river, the situation has worsened. Using the example of Kupa River sediments, it was shown that the magnetic susceptibility method is excellent indetecting increased values of Cr.

Pollution and health risk assessments of potentially toxic elements in soil and sediment samples in a petrochemical industry and surrounding area

AB  - The pollution state and health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in soil and sediment samples of the petrochemical industry and its surrounding area are evaluated in this study. The pseudo-total contents of Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, As, Hg, and Se were measured by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) in analyzed samples. Instead of determining total content, we performed aqua regia of the samples. The silicate matrix remained, and the quantities of elements that are within the silicate matrix do not represent an environmental danger. The soils from the chlor–alkali plant are highly polluted by Hg (the enrichment factor values were above 6000), and by Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn, while the sediment samples from the wastewater channel are polluted with Cr, Cd, and Hg. The measured element contents are used for calculating health risk criteria for a composite worker (a worker who is exposed, long-term, during the work day) and for residential people. Hg is the element that mainly contributes to non-carcinogenic risks within the petrochemical area. The highest value of total carcinogenic risk obtained in the sediment sample from the wastewater channel, and the metal that mostly contributes is Cr. The areas closest to the petrochemical industry have higher values of health risk criteria parameters and pollution indices. The areas that are located further to the north and south from the petrochemical industry are less burdened with the analyzed elements, which is significant because the closest city and village are situated in those directions.

AB  - The need for further research into potentially toxic elements in Serbian rivers led to an investigation of distributions, sources, and ecological risks in a sample base of sediments from 15 rivers. The analyses were carried out through both experimental and theoretical methods. Geochemical fractionation of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, As, V, and Zn in sediments was studied using a sequential extraction procedure. Both a Håkanson risk index (RI) and a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) were used in order to estimate ecological risk, applying the probability distribution of RI values instead of single-point calculations. In order to both further the development of the used method and include additional processes, software for the simulations was developed instead of using proprietary solutions. Metal fractionation showed high percentage recoveries of Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, and V in residual fractions. The high content of Pb, Mn, and Zn in mobile fractions might cause serious environmental concerns. In some localities, Cu and Cd could be problematic elements, since their mobility was high. An environmental assessment based on the described criteria provided risk levels varying from low to median (mainly contributed by Cd and Cu).

Changes of ba contents in sediments of Kupa river (Croatia) 15 years after discovery of ba anomaly complemented by sequential extraction

AB  - The Kupa River, located in the west-central part of Croatia, is a 294 km long tributary of the Sava River, belonging to the Danube watershed. An extreme barium anomaly in sediments of Kupica and Kupa rivers was discovered during 2003 by Frančišković-Bilinski. It originates from an abundant barite mine in Homer-Lokve area, from where it penetrated to Kupica River source. From there the Ba-anomaly in sediments was followed more than 120 km downstream along both rivers. This discovery has a big potential to be used in future sediment transport studies in rivers. Therefore, we repeated sampling on most important locations in 2018, exactly 15 years since the anomaly discovery. The sequential extraction procedure of the EC Bureau of Reference was applied to investigate the transport and fractionation of Ba. During mentioned period of 15 years following processes related with Ba-distribution were observed in fraction <63 µm: Ba-concentrations decreased more than 10 times in Kupica River, from 5790 to 385 mg/kg at Brod na Kupi and 473 mg/kg at Iševnica near the Kupica source. Also, at the first location in Kupa River after confluence with Kupica Ba-concentration decreased from 1070 to 429 mg/kg. This significant decrease is a consequence of abandoning of barite mine in 1994, after which self-purification process of Kupica and Kupa river sediments gradually started. Large quantities of Ba gradually shifted more downstream and in the middle course of the river Ba-deposition in sediments is still going on. At location Jurovo in the middle course of the river concentrations remained about the same in both years, while in Ozalj several km downstream concentration moderately decreased from 341 to 241 mg/kg. Very important finding is that Ba-anomaly in the time frame of 15 years arrived at least 50 km more downstream. Namely, in 2003 at location Pokupsko in the lower course of Kupa River, Ba-concentration was only 78.4 mg/kg, what is about the background level for this region. In 2018 Ba-concentrations significantly increased to 209 mg/kg. At the far end of the river course in Sisak, Ba-anomaly has not yet been observed - concentrations of Ba remained almost the same (65 mg/kg in 2003 and 63.8 mg/kg in 2018). From analysis of coarser sediment fraction 63-2000 µm can be concluded that barium is bound with fine particles. Results of sequential analysis showed that Ba was extracted in the following order for < 63 µm sediment fraction: reducible > residual > soluble in acid > oxidizable, while for 63-2000 µm sediment fraction: reducible > soluble in acid > residual > oxidizable. The highest Ba-content was found in reducible fraction, what indicated that Fe and Mn minerals acted as natural accumulators for Ba in investigated sediments. This association indicated that Ba was potentially extractable. It could have been mobilized from the sediment into the aquatic environment due to decomposition of Fe and Mn oxides under slightly reducing conditions.

AB  - Magnetite particles are widely used as sorbents for removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, drug delivery, cell labelling, magnetic resonance imaging, sensing, etc. [1,2]. Also, the functionalization of polymer by specific ligands enables customizing these composites for specific applications. Magnetic crosslinked macroporous copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate, GMA, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA, mPGME was synthesized by suspension copolymerisation of GMA and EGDMA, in the presence of inert component (mixture of cyclohexanol and aliphatic alcohol) [3] and magnetite nanoparticles coated with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) as silanization agent. The sample was additionally functionalized with diethylene triamine mPGME-deta. Magnetic amino-functionalized copolymer was fully characterized in terms of its structural and magnetic properties using: FTIR analysis, SEM/EDX, XRD and SQUID magnetometry. Synthesized magnetic macroporous copolymer mPGME-deta was tested as sorbent of W(VI) and Cr(VI) oxyanions from diluted aqueous solutions (Ci=25 ppm) in a batch system, under uncompetitive conditions, at room temperature (T=25 °C). The oxyanions concentrations in solution after 60 min of sorption, were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The maximal experimental values of oxyanions sorption capacities (Qmax μmol/g) were compared with theoretically values determined by theoretical modeling, using quantum-chemical methods: Density Functional Theory (DFT), statistic analysis of the crystal structure extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and by implicit solvation model (SMD). It was found that the process is spontaneous and exothermic, and that the active sites of magnetic copolymer sorbent are amino groups (of diethylenetriamine and APTMS) which forms electrostatic interactions with oxianions W(VI) and Cr(VI).

AB  - As soil cadmium (Cd) contamination becomes a serious concern and one of the significant environmental pollution issues all over the world, knowledge of the basic chemistry, origin, inputs, sources, quantity, chemical forms, reactions, as well as the fate and transport of Cd in different types of soil is crucial for better understanding Cd bioavailability, health risks and remedial options. This study aimed to increase the current knowledge on the complex interdependence between the factors affecting behavior, transport and fate of Cd in the soil and to test and compare the performance of the stabilization agents in different soil types. Soils demonstrated various sorption affinity and capacity for Cd accumulation, which proved to be positively correlated with soil pH and the cation exchange capacity (CEC). With increasing levels of contamination, sequential extraction analysis showed the highest increase of relative Cd amounts in the exchangeable fraction regardless of the soil properties, suggesting that added Cd is principally associated with the easily accessible and mobile fraction. For different initial Cd concentrations and soil types, Cd sorption reached the quasi-equilibrium within 24 h of contact. Prolonged aging (two months) influenced the natural stabilization of Cd in all types of soil, but only at low contamination level. The application of both, conventional (slaked lime Ca(OH) 2 ) and alternative phosphate-rich (annealed bovine bones B 400 ) amendments, resulted in Cd relocation and reduction of exchangeable Cd content. Although the effect was smaller when apatite amendment was utilized, observed re-distribution of Cd to more stable soil fractions is preferable for achieving long-term stabilization. Cd concentrations extracted in exchangeable and acid soluble fractions after the treatments of contaminated soil samples suggest that the practical applicability of in situ immobilization depends on the soil properties and the level of contamination, as well as that effect, should be monitored for the possible re-mobilization of Cd.

AB  - This study used advanced statistical and machine learning methods to investigate organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in breast milk, assuming that in a complex biological mixture, the pollutants emitted from the same source or with similar properties are statistically interrelated and possibly exhibit non-linear dynamics. The elaborated analyses such as Unmix source apportionment characterized individual source groups, while guided regularized random forest indicated the pollutant dependence on the ortho-chlorine atom attached to the congener's phenyl ring and mother's age. Mutual associations among PCBs were further discussed, but the results implied they were mostly not related to child delivery. PCB congeners −153, −180, −170, −118, −156, −105, and −138 appeared to be compounds of the outmost importance for mutual prediction with reference to their interrelations regarding chemical structure and metabolic processes in the mother's body. Finally, machine learning methods, which provided prediction relative errors lower than 30% and correlation coefficients higher than 0.90, suggested a possible strong non-linear relationship among the pollutants and consequently, the complexity of their pathways in the breast milk.

AB  - The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. The non-linear equations for ISO 14870 (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction - DTPA), ISO/TS 21268-2 (CaCl2 leaching procedure), US EPA 1311 (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure - TCLP) single step extractions, and the sum of the first two fractions of the sequential extraction, exhibited the best correlation with the experimentally determined concentrations of Cd in plants over the entire range of pollutant concentrations. This approach can improve and facilitate the assessment of human exposure to Cd by tobacco smoking, but may also have wider applicability in predicting soil-to-plant transfer.

Canned sea fish marketed in Serbia: their zinc, copper, and iron levels and contribution to the dietary intake

AB  - The aim of this study was to determine the levels of Zn, Cu, and Fe in three canned fish species marketed Serbia to see if they meet recommended daily intake requirements or exceed safety limits. We collected a total of 207 samples of canned tuna, sardine, and mackerel, in oil or tomato sauce and analysed them with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after acid digestion. The highest levels were obtained for Zn (15.1 mg kg(-1)) and Cu (1.37 mg kg(-1)) in sardine in oil and tomato sauce, respectively, and for Fe (18.98 mg kg(-1)) in mackerel in tomato sauce. Our results keep within the ranges reported by several national food databases and available literature data, with a few exceptions. Our findings also single out canned sardines as the richest source of the three essential elements combined. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of the three essential elements, however, was subpar, and ranged between 0.14 % and 0.72 % of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Zn, Cu, and Fe.

AB  - An integrated approach to the investigation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) was applied to the soil and grapevine leaf samples collected from vineyard environment through the grapevine season. To investigate mobile and bioavailable concentrations of PTEs, six single extraction procedures and pseudo-total digestion were applied to the samples. The element concentrations in the samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). To assess atmospheric particle deposition, saturation isothermal remanent magnetisation (SIRM) was applied to the leaf samples. The obtained PTE concentrations in samples were used for calculating various ecological implications in the vineyard environment. The notable environmental pollution implications were estimated for As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Sr. The environmental risk (RI) of the elements soluble under low-acid conditions influenced soil bioavailability risk. The most bioavailable elements from soil to leaves were Mn, Ni and Sr, followed by Cr and Cu. Cadmium and Co were strongly-bonded in the soil and were not bioavailable. The most suitable extractants for assessing bioavailability in the soil-leaf system were chelating agent Na-2 EDTA, and weak salt solutions CaCl2 and NH4NO3. The biological accumulation concentrations (BACs) of B, Ba, Cd, Co, Ni and Zn were decreasing in the leaves through the grapevine growing phases, that is contributed to the decreasing agrochemical application through the season. The BACs of Co, Cr, Sb and Pb, in July (veraison), were higher than in other phases, which indicate anthropogenic activities. According to correlations between biogeochemical index (BGI) and BAC, Cu and Na were mostly bioaccumulated from soil to leaves due to agrochemical applications, while bioaccumulation of B, Cd, Sb and Sr could be influenced by the other anthropogenic sources. AB  - A total of 138 samples of canned tuna, sardines and mackerel from the Serbian market were analyzed for toxic (As, Cd, Pb, Hg) element levels using ICPMS. The highest average contents of toxic elements were found to be 1.70 mg kg(-1) for arsenic and 0.026 mg kg(-1) for cadmium in sardine and 0.068 mg kg(-1) for mercury in tuna. The lead content was very similar (similar to 0.048 mg kg(-1)) of the three types of canned fish. None of the fish analyzed contained toxic elements in levels exceeding the maximum allowable levels currently in force. Human health risk assessment of As, Cd, Pb and Hg in canned fish were investigated. A risk assessment based on the measured levels of examined elements indicated that consumption of canned fish according to current eating habits in Serbia presents little risk to human health since the carcinogenic risk is within the acceptable range, 10(-4)-10(-6).

AB  - This study aims to compare three extraction techniques of four sequential element extraction steps from soil and sediment samples that were taken from the location of the Pancevo petrochemical industry (Serbia). Elements were extracted using three different techniques: conventional, microwave and ultrasound extraction. A novel procedure sum of the ranking differences (SRD) - was able to rank the techniques and elements, to see whether this method is a suitable tool to reveal the similarities and dissimilarities in element extraction techniques, provided that a proper ranking reference is available. The concentrations of the following elements Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, Sn, Sr, V and Zn were determined through ICP OES. The different efficiencies and recovery values of element concentrations using each of the three extraction techniques were examined by the CRM BCR-701. By using SRD, we obtained a better separation between the different extraction techniques and steps when we rank their differences among the samples while lower separation was obtained according to analysed elements. Appling this method for ordering the elements could be useful for three purposes: (i) to find possible associations among the elements; (ii) to find possible elements that have outlier concentrations or (iii) detect differences in geochemical origin or behaviour of elements. Cross-validation of the SRD values in combination with cluster and principal component analysis revealed the same groups of extraction steps and techniques. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. AB  - Biodegradation of methacrylic acid and starch graft copolymers was investigated for the first time in this manuscript. Synthesized copolymer was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis. Copolymers with different percentage of grafting, G (%), were buried in three different types of soil. Biodegradation was monitored by measuring mass loss of the samples and using FTIR and SEM. The highest weight loss was in soil for the orchid growth (all samples had biodegradation higher than 89%), followed by soil for the cactus growth (mass loss higher than 70%) and soil rich in humus where some of the samples had biodegradation rate near or less than 50%. The correlation between G (%) and percent of weight loss after biodegradation was not significant in any types of soil. FTIR and SEM showed that after biodegradation, samples still contained both building components. Respiration test showed higher O2 consumption and CO2 production comparing to polystyrene which confirmed biodegradability of the accessible starch in copolymer. Based on the obtained results, degradation mechanism is proposed. First step is biodegradation of easily accessible starch followed by dissolution of the poly(methacrylic acid). This mechanism confirmed that biodegradation depends not only on the percentage of grafting, but also on molecular packaging, chains arrangement and the number and types of microorganisms present in the specific types of soils. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - Pollutants, once emitted into the atmosphere, are deposited on the Earth's surface where they further accumulate in both biota and soil. It is therefore a challenge to assess pollutant distributions in different media, and define the various scaling factors to correctly assess each pollutant's environmental implications. In this study, the concentration of potentially toxic elements and their environmental implications were estimated for moss Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. and the collocated topsoil (0-5 cm) samples, collected from 21 sites across the Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbia) during June 2016. The concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, U, V, and Zn were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Median Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, V and maximum As, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations in topsoil samples from the study area were higher than prescribed limits in the national and international regulations. Furthermore, we applied and discussed different metrics to assess the pollution level (enrichment factors [EFs], geo-accumulation [I-geo] and pollution load index [PLI]). Different pollution scaling indicates moderate to severe environmental implications (2  lt  PLI  lt  5; 1  lt  I-geo  lt  7, 1  lt  EFs  lt  275) of the potentially toxic elements in the study area. The sampling sites in the northern part of the study area, well-known for their mineral resources, are particularly affected by toxic element pollution, which is likely a consequence of both the exploitation and waste disposal taking place there. More specifically, a comparison of element EFs calculated according to the Earth's crust values with those considering the topsoil background values, points toward a strong influence of (resuspended) soil component in the element enrichment of all environmental samples (i.e., in both the moss an collocated topsoil). However, the EFs of Pb, Cu, Zn, and U in the moss samples were notably higher than those calculated for the collocated topsoil, which could be an indication of a non-local pollution. Finally, both the collocated measurements and multiscale pollution assessment, performed simultaneously, testify to the strong geochemical 'signature' of the studied area.

AB  - To tackle the ever-present global concern regarding human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) via food products, this study strived to indicate associations between organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in lake-fish tissue depending on the species and sampling season. Apart from the monitoring initiatives recommended in the Global Monitoring Plan for POPs, the study discussed 7 OCPs and 18 PCB congeners determined in three Cyprinidae species (rudd, carp, and Prussian carp) from Vransko Lake (Croatia), which are widely domesticated and reared as food fish across Europe and Asia. We exploit advanced classification algorithms, the Kohonen self-organizing maps (SOM) and Decision Trees (DT), to search for POP patterns typical for the investigated species. As indicated by SOM, some of the dioxin-like and non-dioxin-like PCBs (PCB-28, PCB-74, PCB-52, PCB-101, PCB-105, PCB-114, PCB-118, PCB-156 and PCB-157), alpha-HCH and beta-HCH caused dissimilarities among fish species, but regardless of their weight and length. To support these suggestions, DT analysis sequenced the fish species and seasons based on the concentration of heavier congeners. The presented assumptions indicated that the supplemental application of SOM and DT offers advantageous features over the usually rough interpretation of POPs pattern and over the single use of the methods.

Bioavailability of potentially toxic elements in soil-grapevine (leaf, skin, pulp and seed) system and environmental and health risk assessment

AB  - Monitoring of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soil represents the first measure of caution regarding food safety, while research into element bioavailability should be a step forward in understanding the element transportation chain. This study was conducted in the grapevine growing area ("Oplenac Wine Route") for investigating element bioavailability in the soil-grapevine system accompanied by an assessment of the ecological implications and human health risk. Single extraction procedures (CH3COOH, Na(2)EDTA, CaCl2, NH4NO3 and deionised H2O) and digestion were performed to estimate the bioavailability of 22 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, V and Zn) from the topsoil (0-30 cm) and subsoil (30-60 cm) to the grapevine parts (leaf, skin, pulp and seed) and wine. The extractants were effective comparing to the pseudo-total concentrations in following order Na2EDTA. CH3COOH. NH4NO3. CaCl2, H2O2 h and 16 h. The most suitable extractants for assessing the bioavailability of the elements from the soil to the grapevine parts were CaCl2, NH4NO3 and Na(2)EDTA, but deionised H2O could be suitable, as well. The results showed that Ba was the most bioavailable element in the soil-grapevine system. Contamination factor implied a moderate contamination (1  lt  CF  lt  3) of the soil. The concentrations of Cr, Ni and Cd in the soil were above the maximum allowed concentrations. According to the biological accumulation coefficient (BAC), the grape seeds and grapevine leavesmostly accumulated Cu and Zn from the soil, respectively. Based on ratio factor (RF  gt  1), the influence of atmospheric deposition on the aerial grapevine parts (leaves and grape skin) was observed. Nevertheless, low adverse health risk effects (HI  lt  1 and R  lt = 1 x 10(-6)) were estimated for farmers and grape and wine consumers. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Monitoring of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soil represents the first measure of caution regarding food safety, while research into element bioavailability should be a step forward in understanding the element transportation chain. This study was conducted in the grapevine growing area ("Oplenac Wine Route") for investigating element bioavailability in the soil-grapevine system accompanied by an assessment of the ecological implications and human health risk. Single extraction procedures (CH3COOH, Na(2)EDTA, CaCl2, NH4NO3 and deionised H2O) and digestion were performed to estimate the bioavailability of 22 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, V and Zn) from the topsoil (0-30 cm) and subsoil (30-60 cm) to the grapevine parts (leaf, skin, pulp and seed) and wine. The extractants were effective comparing to the pseudo-total concentrations in following order Na2EDTA. CH3COOH. NH4NO3. CaCl2, H2O2 h and 16 h. The most suitable extractants for assessing the bioavailability of the elements from the soil to the grapevine parts were CaCl2, NH4NO3 and Na(2)EDTA, but deionised H2O could be suitable, as well. The results showed that Ba was the most bioavailable element in the soil-grapevine system. Contamination factor implied a moderate contamination (1  lt  CF  lt  3) of the soil. The concentrations of Cr, Ni and Cd in the soil were above the maximum allowed concentrations. According to the biological accumulation coefficient (BAC), the grape seeds and grapevine leavesmostly accumulated Cu and Zn from the soil, respectively. Based on ratio factor (RF  gt  1), the influence of atmospheric deposition on the aerial grapevine parts (leaves and grape skin) was observed. Levels of toxic elements in canned fish from the Serbian markets and their health risks assessment

AB  - A total of 138 samples of canned tuna, sardines and mackerel from the Serbian market were analyzed for toxic (As, Cd, Pb, Hg) element levels using ICPMS. The highest average contents of toxic elements were found to be 1.70 mg kg(-1) for arsenic and 0.026 mg kg(-1) for cadmium in sardine and 0.068 mg kg(-1) for mercury in tuna. The lead content was very similar (similar to 0.048 mg kg(-1)) of the three types of canned fish. None of the fish analyzed contained toxic elements in levels exceeding the maximum allowable levels currently in force. Human health risk assessment of As, Cd, Pb and Hg in canned fish were investigated. A risk assessment based on the measured levels of examined elements indicated that consumption of canned fish according to current eating habits in Serbia presents little risk to human health since the carcinogenic risk is within the acceptable range, 10(-4)-10(-6).
