Research has shown that high school students from all over the world find organic
chemistry content to be too extensive and complex to understand, while most of them are
unaware of the importance of organic chemistry application in the real world.
In order to determine what is the Serbian students attitude towards organic chemistry, we
conducted a survey in which 241 third grade mathematics and science orientation
gymnasium students took part. We determined that most of them find organic chemistry
content to be difficult to understand and too extensive, but not entirely uninteresting. In
addition, most of them do not find thorough knowledge of organic chemistry to be important
for their everyday life or faculty they intend to enroll. More then half of the respondents
considers the knowledge of organic chemistry that they acquired during the course of the
current school year to be very poor, and they experience the biggest problems with
understending of organic chemistry reac...tion mechanisms. Finally, most of the respondents
find that a typical organic chemistry lesson primarily consist of a teachers lecture, which is
conducted according to the organic chemistry textbook.
