Some examples of geo and mining hazards in Serbia
Serbia and Montenegro (SCG) is a country with numerous active mines. Of these, copper, lead-zinc and coal mines are amongst the biggest and at the same time the most hazardous from an environmental point of view. Three characteristic case studies of such hazards are briefly presented: 1) Risk assessment in the vicinity of flotation dump Veliki Krivelj (Bor - Serbia); 2) Determination of arsenic sources by means of EPMA and its environmental impact in the Bor mining district; 3) Leaching of coal ash (Obrenovac - Serbia). The majority of existing data with respect to geo and mining hazards in SCG are neither systematised nor complete. The most important requirement to solve this difficulty in the future is to develop a database of environmental mineral impacts in Serbia and the Central Balkans. This project is also briefly presented.
