Base-catalyzed reactions of beta-oxonitriles 1 with diethyl mercaptosuccinate favour heterocyclization to afford 2-alkylidene-4-oxothiazolidines 3, rather than 2-alkylidene-4-oxo-1,3-thiazinanes 4.
