AB - Free and associated bitumens were isolated by sequential extraction from Vlasina lake peat (SE Serbia) and were investigated in order to differentiate between oil pollution and natural bitumens. Four peat samples were collected at different depths, on a peat island. Gas chromatographic (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed the presence of three markedly different bitumen fractions. Here we show that the free bitumens are representing the native peat bitumens. The two associated bitumens are mainly the products of bacterial rework of organic substance, which were then trapped by two differing mechanisms. The bitumens characteristics and association features exclude a contribution of oil pollution.

AB - The influence of the intensity of interaction between oil pollutants and ground waters in alluvial sediments on the effect of microbial activity was investigated in this work. The study was based on a comparison of detailed analyses of two fractions of an oil pollutant originating from a Danube alluvial formation near the Pancevo Oil Refinery: fraction 1. separated from the aqueous layer by decantation. presumed to have been in less intensive interaction with water. and fraction 2. isolated from the aqueous emulsion by extraction with chloroform. presumed to have been in stronger interaction with water, Both fractions were shown to originate from the same type of oil pollutant. Nevertheless. significant compositional differences between the two fractions were observed. A significantly pronounced domination of even carbon number homologues of C-18-C-24 n-alkanes in fraction 2. atypical for crude oil pollutants, compared to the corresponding distribution observed in fraction 1, suggested a more intense activity. i.e., a much better effect of microorganisms in direct contact with the oil pollutant within the aqueous environment. The identification of even carbon number C-14-C-18 n-alcohols and C-14-C-18 fatty acids, as well as cholesterol, in fraction 2, suggested that microorganisms of the algal type in non-photosynthetic conditions were most probably responsible for the mentioned microbial processes.

AB - In this paper, biomarkers were applied for identification of oil-type pollutants in surface soil and their microbial changes were investigated. Samples were taken at destroyed fuel storage in Nis (Yugoslavia). Steranes, and triterpanes were used for identification and differentiation of oil-type pollutants in surface soil. n-Alkanes were found to be affected by biodegradation and biosynthesis of "new" even-carbon numbered homologues was observed. Both processes showed differences in intensity, even if layer distances were as small as 25 cm.

AB - In a search for source rocks of the crude oils of the Drmno depression (Southern part of the Pannonian Basin, Serbia), based on bulk and specific organic geochemical parameters, six out of eight Sirakovo, Bubusinac and Bradarac sedimentary core samples were found to possess typical source rock characteristics. By comparing the results observed for these sedimentary samples with the corresponding propel-ties of the crude oils from the Sirakovo and Bradarac oil-gas fields, a positive organic geochemical oil-source rock correlation was experienced for the first time within this basin. This finding may be considered as an important step towards the ultimate organic geochemical/geological interpretation of the Drmno depression.

AB - The results of an investigation of crude oils originating from the Sirakovo and Bradarac-Maljurevac localities (southern part of the Pannonian Basin) are reported in this paper. The aim was to estimate the organic geochemical similarity of the crude oils fi om the DI mno (Kostolac) depression oil fields. The nine selected samples originated from reservoir. rocks of various depths. Reliable source and organic geochemical maturation parameters served as the basis for the correlation studies. The similar origin of the investigated DI mno depression crude oils was corroborated, characterized by a significant participation of terrestrial precursor biomass. They were shown to be of relatively low maturity and to have been formed during the earlier stages of the diagenet- ic-catagenetic sequence of processes leading to the formation of crude oils, most probably in source rocks of Tertiary age, corresponding to vitrinite reflectances between Ro = 0.70 % and Ro = 0.80%. The crude oils from Bradarac-Maljurevac seemed to be somewhat less homogeneous with respect to organic geochemical parameters compared to Sirakovo crude oils.

AB - The fate of oil-type pollutants in ground waters from the Danube River (Yugoslavia) alluvion tin the area of an oil refinery) was being surveyed during a long period of time. Based on detailed analyses of extracts (group composition, GC analysis of n-alkanes and isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes, and GC-MS analysis of polycyclic alkanes) isolated from the ground water samples taken five times from the same borehole during a period of approximately two years (beginning with the winter '97/'98 up to the winter '00), gradual but intensive microbiological degradation of oil-type pollutants has been asserted. However, following an almost complete degradation of,,crude oil" n-alkanes, formation of ,,new" n-alkanes was observed in the examined ground waters. The distribution of newly formed n-alkanes suggested that they most probably represent a product of metabolic processes of micro-organisms which might have participated hi the degradation of hydrocarbons originating from oil-type pollutants.

AB - In this paper, ground waters from the alluvial Formation of the Danube River were investigated (samples Were taken from boreholes within the Pancevo Oil Refinery, Northern Serbia). The organic substances were extracted, their bulk composition determined, and n-alkanes were analysed in the alkane fractions, as well as the isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes, pristane and phytane (by GC analysis), and the polycyclic alkanes of the sterane and triterpane types (GC-MS analysis). The obtained results have shown that, in case that n-alkanes, pristane and phytane cannot be used (e.g. if their biodegradation has occurred in ground waters), steranes and triterpanes may serve as most useful tools in identifying oil-type pollution.

AB - Evidence for catalytic effects of indigenous minerals in the pyrolysis of Aleksinac oil shale kerogen was found by investigating the liquid products obtained in the Micro Activity Test (MAT) pyrolysis of raw shale and its demineralized substrates. By comparing the corresponding fragmentograms of a demineralized sample with those of a substrate containing only silicate minerals, differences in the side-chain isomerisation of the steranes and triterpanes, and in the side-chain cleavage of the triaromatic steroids were observed. These findings corroborated the previous conclusion, based on MAT parameters and TG weight losses, that the catalytic effect of the indigenous mineral components during the pyrolysis of Aleksinac oil shale kerogen is very low. © 1993.

AB - In order to evaluate the adsorption and catalytic effects of indigenous carbonates and silicates on the organic matter of Aleksinac oil shale, the free and the bound bitumens were isolated and analyzed by organic geochemical methods. The differences in the gross compositions indicated an adsorption effect of both the carbonates and silicates in the examined oil shale. The maturation parameters, based on n-alkanes and isoprenoid alkanes pristane and phytane, indicated that bitumen 3 was of the highest, and bitumen 1 of the lowest, apparent maturity. The silicates were shown to have had a thermocatalytic effect on the organic matter of this sediment. Clay minerals had a catalytic effect primarily on sterane aromatization, rearrangement of steranes into diasteranes and their (20R) → (20S) isomerization. All evidence obtained by analysis of steranes and aromatic steroids suggested that the differences in bitumen compositions should be explained by the effect of clay minerals rather than by variations in the origin of the precursor biomass. © 1992.
