AB  - The pollution state and health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in soil and sediment samples of the petrochemical industry and its surrounding area are evaluated in this study. The pseudo-total contents of Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, As, Hg, and Se were measured by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) in analyzed samples. Instead of determining total content, we performed aqua regia of the samples. The silicate matrix remained, and the quantities of elements that are within the silicate matrix do not represent an environmental danger. The soils from the chlor–alkali plant are highly polluted by Hg (the enrichment factor values were above 6000), and by Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn, while the sediment samples from the wastewater channel are polluted with Cr, Cd, and Hg. The measured element contents are used for calculating health risk criteria for a composite worker (a worker who is exposed, long-term, during the work day) and for residential people. Hg is the element that mainly contributes to non-carcinogenic risks within the petrochemical area. The highest value of total carcinogenic risk obtained in the sediment sample from the wastewater channel, and the metal that mostly contributes is Cr. The areas closest to the petrochemical industry have higher values of health risk criteria parameters and pollution indices. The areas that are located further to the north and south from the petrochemical industry are less burdened with the analyzed elements, which is significant because the closest city and village are situated in those directions.

AB  - Microbial polysaccharides, due to their unique physiochemical properties, have found application in the food industry, cosmetics, pharmacy and medicine. In the environment, microbes can use polysaccharides to alleviate the adverse effects of heavy metals in their close proximity. This adaptive property shows interesting potential for bioremediation. Herein, the effects of the exopolysaccharides (EPS) levan, produced by the bacterium Bacillus licheniformis NS032 and pullulan, produced by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans CH-1 in the presence of copper (Cu2+) have been investigated for the first time on antioxidant enzyme activity, respiration and Cu2+ bioaccumulation of Daphnia magna as well as the bioluminescence of Vibrio fischeri. Both EPS decreased toxicity of Cu2+ in the acute test with D. magna. The activity of catalase (CAT) was significantly diminished after acute exposure to Cu2+ in comparison to treatments with Cu2+ and EPS, while in the prolonged acute exposure the CAT activity did not show statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) differences between treatments with and without the EPS. According to ICP-MS results, during prolonged acute exposure of neonates, the bioaccumulation of Cu2+ in treatments without the EPS was 52.03 μg/g of biomass (wet), while in treatments with EPS, the bioaccumulation was lower by one order of magnitude. The respiration of neonates during acute exposure to Cu2+ with or without the EPS was monitored using the MicroOxymax respirometer, and the results show the EPS can positively effect the respiration. In the case of bacterial bioluminescence, the toxicity of Cu2+ decreased in treatments with EPS (30 min EC10) from 3.54 mg/L to 140.61 mg/L (levan) and 45.00 mg/L (pullulan). This study demonstrates protective effect of EPS against Cu2+ toxicity on D. magna and V. fischeri, and opens the door for further investigation of potential application of levan and pullulan in bioremediation of heavy metals and mitigation of their adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

AB  - This investigation examines surface sediment samples from rivers and artificial lakes (Serbia) to quantify levels of potentially harmful elements (As, Hg, and Se) and several ancillary elements (Al, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, C, H, N, and S). These data provide the first global analysis of Hg, As and Se levels in a well-studied system. Combination of different methods was applied for estimation of the environmental status of sediments and to determine the potential risk of ecological damage: digestion with aqua regia and determination of element content, determination of elements mobile forms by ammonium-acetate extraction, calculation of contamination indexes - index of geoaccumulation and enrichment factor, comparison with sediment quality guidelines and other literature data, and use of statistical methods. Results indicate that the sediments are slightly enriched with As and Hg, but not with Se. Fact that values for Se contents was less than the international threshold levels, suggesting the very probable absence of risk of contamination over the catchment with this element. The average pollution levels in Serbian river and artificial lakes expressed in terms of geoaccumulation indexes of As and Hg indicate that the environment is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated. All values of EF for Hg were below 2, indicating deficiency to minimal enrichment with Hg on studied localities. The EF values of As indicate deficiency to moderate enrichment (EF ranged from 0.11 to 3.54). According to the comparison to quality standard, the As in sediments of the studied area have potential risk. High content of arsenic in river and lake sediments indicate that arsenic pollution problem that lasts longer period of time.

AB  - Using the microwave-hydrothermal method for the synthesis of composite, high surface density of hydroxyl groups, as an active adsorption sites for arsenic, was obtained. Adsorption mechanisms of As(III) and As(V) onto zirconium-doped titanium dioxide (Zr-TiO2) were investigated and proposed using macroscopic and microscopic methods. Obtained results are suggesting inner-sphere and outer-sphere adsorption mechanisms for As(III) and As(V), respectively. This allowed us to identify parameters that are critical for the successful removal of arsenic from water, which is essential information for further optimization of the removal process. The composite was further applied for the removal of As(III) and As(V) from water in a dynamic flow through the reactor. Column study proved that the removal of both arsenic species below the value recommended by WHO can be achieved. Elution of As(III) and As(V) from the composite can be done by using small amounts of 0.01M NaOH solution resulting in preconcentration of arsenic species and possible multiple usage of composite.

AB  - The sequential extraction procedure of the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) was applied for the fractionation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, and V in the Serbian river sediments. The aim of this paper was to describe a new approach in detection of anthropogenic elements in sediments, related to the Serbian river courses in order to assess their metal contamination. For sediment pollution evaluation, the risk assessment code (RAC) and the secondary phase enrichment factor (K-SPEF) were used. Metal fractionation showed more easily mobilized forms predominant for copper, zinc, cadmium, manganese, and lead, which can be one of the indicators for anthropogenic source input. Chromium, nickel, iron, and vanadium found in the residual fraction indicate these metals may be an indicator for natural sources input. Based on RAC classification, results of sediments show no risk (Cr and V), low risk (Ni, Pb, and Fe), medium risk (Cu), high risk (Cd and Zn), and very high risk (Mn). The mean values of K-SPEF were Cd  gt  Cu  gt  Zn  gt  Ni  gt  Mn  gt  Pb  gt  Fe  gt  Cr  gt  V, decreasing scale of no to moderately severe enrichment. The sediments were found to be contaminated by heavy metals to various extents, mostly Cd, Cu, and Zn. Research has shown the importance of K-SPEF in quantifying degree of metal enrichment in sediments using results of sequential extraction. With the application of this factor, which is not frequently used in the scientific literature, the results obtained with sequential extraction can be used not only for assessment of mobility but also to quantify the metal pollution.

AB  - Composite material Zr-doped TiO2, suitable for the removal of arsenic from water, was synthetized with fast and simple microwave-hydrothermal method. Obtained material, Zr-TiO2, had uniform size and composition with zirconium ions incorporated into crystal structure of titanium dioxide. Synthetized composite material had large specific surface area and well-developed micropore and mesopore structure that was responsible for fast adsorption of As(III) and As(V) from water. The influence of pH on the adsorption capacity of arsenic was studied. The kinetics and isotherm experiments were also performed. The treatment of natural water sample containing high concentration of arsenic with composite material Zr-TiO2 was efficient. The concentration of arsenic was reduced to the value recommended by WHO.

AB  - In the present study, concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined at 35 river sediments in Serbia. The anthropogenic heavy metals input and quantification of the metal enrichment degree in sediments were estimated by calculating geo-accumulation indices (I-geo) and enrichment factors (EF). These pollution indices have been calculated using different background values (continental crust and local background values) and different element used for normalization (Al and Fe), followed by result comparison. The EF values calculated with continental crust as background (minor to extremely severe enrichment) were higher than when regional background values were used (minor to moderate enrichment). Significant influence of background values on the I-geo values is observed. Values of geo-accumulation index ( lt 2) revealed that studied river sediments are remaining unpolluted to moderately polluted with Co, Mn, Cr, and Ni. Significant pollution in the sediments was observed for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn elements. The results of this study confirm the relevance of precise and accurate determining of local background concentrations while assessing sediment pollution. The values of EFs for studied elements were more influenced by the choice of background values than selection of element used for normalization. Our recommendation would be to use the local and regional background content in quantification of metal contamination in sediments, since these values differ and are site and region dependent.

The estimate of the anthropogenic component of contamination was derived by determining the total element content and the background values for elements in sediments, and the severity of pollution was assessed by calculating a number of pollution indices including the contamination factor, the enrichment factor, the index of geoaccumulation, the ecological risk factor, the potential ecological risk index, the pollution load index, the combined pollution index, the modified degree of contamination and the toxic unit factor. This analysis indicates that river sediments in Serbia are primarily polluted with Zn, Cu and Cd. The most contaminated river systems are the Ibar, Pek, West Morava and Great Morava rivers. Mining activities were found to have a significant influence on sediment. Multivariate analyses suggested anthropogenic origins for Pb, Zn, Cd, As, Ni and Cu, whilst Fe, V, Mn, Co and Cr appear to have a mixed origin (both lithogenic and anthropogenic sources). A geochemical approach, with a calculation of pollution indices and statistical methods, is recognised as useful for the risk management of trace elements in sediments around the world.

AB  - The purpose of this study was to evaluate sediment heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn) related to pollution in freshwater sediments in Serbia. The heavy metal enrichment determination in studied sediments was conducted by using total metal content with strong acidic digestion (HCl + HNO3 + HF), a calculated enrichment factor (EF), and application of correlation analysis and the box plot method. For identification of appropriate elemental normalisers for enrichment factor calculations, Fe, Al, Ti and Si were used. The significant variation in heavy metal distribution among samples collected in this large region, encompassing all Serbian watersheds, suggests the selective contamination of sediments by heavy metals. Values for EF indicate nil to moderate enrichment for most studied elements, except for Cd, Cu, and Zn at some sampling points, where the enrichment was, in some cases, even severe. The high content of heavy metals and EFs in Serbia is related to the human activities around the sampling sites. The results indicate that all elements used for normalisation in this paper can also be used to estimate the anthropogenic influence, with an exception of Co, which should be considered as an element for normalisation in future studies.

AB  - Microwave-hydrothermal method was used for the synthesis of TiO2 and TiO2 doped with zirconium. The method was fast and simple and adsorbents were used for removal of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized by BET surface area measurements and powder XRD. Experiments showed that TiO2 doped with 10% of Zr using the microwave-hydrothermal method have greater specific surface area and total pore volume in comparison with TiO2 synthesized using the same method. Better removal with doped adsorbent was obtained for both, As(III) and As(V). Further experiments were carried out with Zr doped TiO2 sorbent in order to examine kinetic of adsorption, influence of pH and effect of common anions present in natural waters. The method was fast and simple and adsorbents were used for removal of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized by BET surface area measurements and powder XRD. Experiments showed that TiO2 doped with 10% of Zr using the microwave-hydrothermal method have greater specific surface area and total pore volume in comparison with TiO2 synthesized using the same method. Better removal with doped adsorbent was obtained for both, As(III) and As(V). Further experiments were carried out with Zr doped TiO2 sorbent in order to examine kinetic of adsorption, influence of pH and effect of common anions present in natural waters. AB  - Elevated concentrations of arsenic in groundwater, which is used as a source for drinking water, is a worldwide problem. Use of TiO2 and iron doped TiO2 synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method for As(III) and As(V) removal were examined. Synthesized sorbents were characterized with XRD and nitrogen physisorption. Synthesized sorbents have predominantly anatase structure, and no peaks for iron could be observed. Doping of iron increases the surface area of synthesized sorbents. Sorption experiments show that increase of iron in sorbents increases the sorption capacity for As(III) and As(V). Increase of pH from 3 to 11 has no influence on As(III) sorption but decreases the sorption of As(V). Batch isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacities of As(III) and As(V). As(III) followed the Freundlich isotherm model, while for As(V) a better fit was with the Langmuir isotherm. The results of competition of SO42- and PO43- anions on adsorption of As(III) indicated that both anions reduced substantially the efficiency of adsorption on both adsorbents while for As(V) only the presence of PO43- anion interfered with adsorption. Testing 10Fe/TiO2 sorbent with arsenic contaminated natural water showed that this material could be used for removal of arsenic to the level recommended by WHO without pretreatment.

AB  - GIS is a computer-based system to input, store, manipulate, analyze and output spatially referenced data. There is a huge range application of GIS that generally sets out to fulfill: mapping, measurement, monitoring, modeling and management. In this study, GIS technology was used for the regional recognition of origin and distribution patterns of multifloral honey chemical traits in Serbia. This included organizing and analyzing the spatial and attributive data of 164 honey samples collected from different regions of Serbia during the harvesting season of 2009. Multifloral honey was characterized in regards to mineral composition, sugar content and basic physicochemical properties. The kriging method of Geostatistical Analyst was used for interpolation to predict values of a sampled variable over the whole territory of Serbia

AB  - Electrochemical treatment is a new trend for the purification of textile industry wastewater which containing azo dyes. In this paper the electrochemical treatment was used for decolorization of azo dye Reactive Blue 52. The efficiency of decolorization was compared for different electrochemical systems which were all equipped with Fisher platinum electrode as anode and a different cathode (Zr, Pd, C) in sodium sulfate as supporting electrolyte. In order to find optimal conditions the influence of various voltage and pH values of initial dye solution was studied. Decolorization rate was monitored by spectrophotometer while degradation products were identified by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Results of HPLC analysis confirmed presence of various degradation products in electrochemical systems, which indicated different mechanism of degradation. This was also confirmed by Ek-t curve. In terms of power consumption the most cost effective system was with the graphite cathode (C/Pt).

Experimental data were fitted both to Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models. Efficiency of sorption was in good correlation with the time of milling in case of pure oxide. There were small differences in sorption between As(III) and As(V). In the case of mixture of oxides results were different. The best results were obtained by 30 min of milling. With prolonged milling, the sorption decreased to 3 h and after that increased again. These results were explained by phase transition. Sorption kinetics, influence of pH and the presence of other anions were examined for mixture of oxides with highest sorption capacity. The bioavailability of sorbed arsen was tested using modified Tessier procedure.

Compared with La singly doped TiO2, the co-doped catalysts showed an important improvement of photoactivity. The photocatalyst with 2% (w/w) La and 0.02% (w/w) V appeared to be the most photoactive. Optimal catalyst loading and the kinetics of degradation were also studied. Demonstrating higher photodegradation efficiency for RB than commercially available TiO2 Evonik P25, easy separation from suspension by spontaneous sedimentation and reusability of the catalyst, make this photocatalyst suitable for wastewater treatment.

AB  - Titanium dioxide photocatalysts co-doped with lanthanum and vanadium were prepared by a facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, SEM, N-2 physisorption at 77 K and DRS. The characterization showed that co-doped TiO2 samples have a high degree of crystallinity and existence of fully anatase phase. It was found that all the synthesized catalysts have the mesoporous structure. The co-doped TiO2 samples have larger BET surface areas and the mesopores volume than pure TiO2 and La doped samples. The vanadium co-doping contributes to the extension of absorption into the visible region. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated by the decolorization of textile dye Reactive Blue 52 in aqueous solutions under sun-like radiation. Compared with La singly doped TiO2, the co-doped catalysts showed an important improvement of photoactivity. The photocatalyst with 2% (w/w) La and 0.02% (w/w) V appeared to be the most photoactive. Optimal catalyst loading and the kinetics of degradation were also studied. AB  - In this paper, the main objective was fractionation of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Ca, Fe, and K in certificate material and sediment samples gathered from and around the Petrochemical Industry using the conventional, microwave and ultrasonic sequential extraction. Microwave oven and ultrasound bath were used as an energy source for achieving faster extraction. Additional heating and boiling of samples were avoided by using lower power and shorter time for microwave and ultrasound extraction. Precision and accuracy of procedure were evaluated by using certificate material (BCR701). Acceptable accuracy of metals (87.0-111.3 %) was achieved for all three-step sequential of conventional extraction protocol. An accuracy of the fourth step has been verified with two certificate materials: BCR143R and 146R. The range of total extracted metal concentrations from sediments was similar for all three extraction techniques. A significant high percentage of Cd, Cu, and Zn were obtained after extraction of the exchangeable and acid soluble sediment fraction. Principal component analysis of values obtained after determination of risk assessment code using conventional and ultrasound sequential extraction show similarity of these values. Accuracy, recovery, and risk assessment code values imply that ultrasound sequential extraction is a more suitable, accelerated sequential extraction procedure (30 min per extraction step) than microwave extraction in applied conditions.

The fourth step, the pseudo-total content, was performed the same on samples remaining after performing the extraction of the previous three phases either conventionally, microwave-assisted or with ultrasound. The precision and accuracy of the proposed procedures were evaluated using a certified reference material BCR701. Acceptable accuracy for most of the metals was observed for all three steps of BCR protocol applying a 16 h total shaking period. Metals were determined with an acceptable accuracy after the pseudo-total step; expect Cr. Results obtained after the application of different techniques on sediments were comparable with ANOVA test for the 95 % of confidence level.

AB  - Textile industries are widespread in developing countries. Among the various processes in the textile industry, the dyeing process uses large volumes of water for dyeing, fixing and washing. Textile industry wastewater is characterized by intensive color and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations that discarding of these toxic wastewaters to the environment will cause a major problem. In this study electrochemical oxidation of reactive textile dyes: Reactive Blue 52, Reactive Black 5, Reactive Green 15, and Reactive Yellow 125, using platinum anode was examined. Electrolysis is carried out in electrochemical cell containing membrane which is standard membrane in industry. Membrane separated anodic and cathodic area. Supporting electrolyte was 0.1M sodium sulfate which is also present in real textile effluents. Applied voltage of 6, 12 and 24V, and influence of membrane on electrolysis were examined on model dye (Reactive Blue 52). Highest degradation degree for model dye was achieved at 12V, so electrolysis of other dyes was done on this voltage. COD value of all dyes dropped after 60 minutes of electrolysis below a measurable level ( lt 30mg/L O-2), except Reactive Black 5 whose COD reduction was 57.95% with membrane and 35.28% without membrane applied. Complete decolorization was achieved after 10 to 60 minutes for all dyes. Degradation products of model dye Reactive Blue 52 were monitored with HPLC, and influence of pH on decolorization was also examined on model dye.
