AB - The essential oils from the aerial parts of Anthemis ruthenica and Anthemis arvensis, wild-growing in Serbia, obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed using GC and GC/MS. A total of 75 and 81 components were identified in A. ruthenica and A. arvensis, respectively. The major constituents of A. ruthenica oil were ss-pinene (3.6%), 1,8-cineol (6.8%), 4-terpineol (6.2%), alpha-terpineol (3.6%), isophyllocladene (5.4%) and palmitic acid (9.9%). The oil of A. arvensis showed a high content of non-terpenic compounds. The main components were palmitic acid (21.2%) and linoleic acid (6.5%). The most abundant terpenic compounds in the oil of A. arvensis were pinocarvone (5.4%) and isospathulenol (4.6%). Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AB - The investigation of roots of Anthemis cotula (Asteraceae) from cast Serbia revealed, in addition to polyacetylenes previously isolated from the same species, three prenylated 4-hydroxyacetophenones, detected for the first time in any Anthemis species. It is possible that they act as phytoalexins in the plant. From the aerial parts, six linear sesquiterpene lactones (four known and two new ones), as well as two known flavones, apigenin and hispidulin, were isolated.

AB - Two known sesquiterpene lactones, antheindurolides A and B, together with five new related lactones with the same unusual skeleton were isolated from the aerial parts of Anthemis arvensis growing in Serbia. The originally proposed structure of antheindurolide B was revised. This (antheindurolide) type of lactones, detected so far only in the genus Anthemis (Anthemis indurata, Anthemis pseudocotula and Anthemis cotula) could be of chemotaxonomic significance. AB - We used two species of light-requiring seeds, Paulownia tomentosa, which have absolute light requirement (no germination in darkness), and Stellaria media seeds, which germinate in darkness to a certain extent because of presence of preformed active phytochrome, to obtain results strongly suggesting that gibberellic acid nitrite stimulates seed germination via its capability as a functional NO donor. Exogenous application of gibberellic acid nitrite stimulates gibberellin-insensitive Stellaria media seed germination in darkness as do a wide variety of NO donors. Pure gibberellic acid could replace the light requirement of P tomentosa seeds, thus enabling them to germinate in darkness. Gibberellic acid nitrite did not have this effect. A stimulative effect from gibberellic acid nitrite could be detected only after exposure of these seeds to short, 10 min, pulse of red light. Taken together, these results suggest that gibberellic activity of gibberellic acid nitrite is lost after nitrosation but, regarding to the presence of -O-NO moiety in the molecule, gibberellic acid nitrite shares stimulative properties in seed germination with other compounds with NO-releasing properties.

AB - Quantitative H-1 NMR measurements revealed Delta(11(13)) sesquiterpene gamma-lactones as the main constituents (greater than or equal to 1% per weight of dried plant material) in the crude extracts of the aerial parts of Amphoricarpos neumayeri ssp. neumayeri and ssp. murbeckii from mountains Orjen and Visitor (Montenegro), respectively. Preparative silica gel chromatography afforded thirteen guai-11(13)-en-12,6alpha-olides, named amphoricarpolides (1-13), with the same relative (1alphaH,4PH,5alphaH,7betaH) configuration of the basic skeleton. The common structural feature of lactones 2-13 was 3beta,15-dioxygenation pattern. The only exception was 1 (3-deoxyamphoricarpolide), containing a single oxygen substituent (15-OH). Eight of them exhibited an additional oxygen substituent, 9beta-OH (5 and 6), 2alpha-OH (8-12), or 2alpha-OAc (13). Compound 7 was epoxydated at 10alpha(14)-position, whereas the remaining lactones contained a 10(14) double bond. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Two flavonoid glycosides 1 and 2 having the luteolin structure were isolated from flowers of the endemic plant species Cephalaria pastricensis. They were identified by (1)H and (13)C NMR, as well as UV/Vis spectroscopy. The structures of 1 and 2 were also confirmed by the spectral data of aglycones and TLC of the sugars obtained after acid hydrolysis. Flavones 1 and 2 showed significant antiradical activity in the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay.
AB - Iz cvetova Cephalaria pastricensis izolovana su dva heterozidna flavonoida sa luteolinskim aglikonom (1 i 2). Wihova struktura je određena primenom 1H i 13C-NMR i UV spektroskopije. Strukture flavona 1 i 2 su potvrđene i spektrima aglikona, odnosno tankoslojnom hromatografijom oslobođenih šećera nakon kisele hidrolize. Jedinjenja 1 i 2 su pokazala značajnu antiradikalsku aktivnost u 1,1-difenil-2 pikrilhidrazil (DPPH) testu.

AB - Conformational analysis of 9alpha-acetoxycumambrine A 1 and 8-O-isobutiryl-9alpha-acetoxycumambrine B 2 was carried out by low-temperature NMR studies. Results suggested that lactones 1 and 2 are mixtures of two distinctive conformers, I and II. Based on low-temperature H-1 NMR spectra, in four solvents, the thermodynamic parameters of I reversible arrow II exchange process were assessed. Energy of activation of I -- gt II reaction was obtained by dynamic NMR simulations for both compounds. Results revealed that conformational exchange of lactones 1 and 2 occurs due to "chair reversible arrow twisted chair" interconversion of a heptane ring. The same PM3 semiempirical method was applied for geometry optimization of lactones 1 and 2, as well as of 9alpha-hydroxycumambrine A 3, 9alpha-acetoxycumambrine B 4, and cumambrine B 5.

AB - shown by quantitative H-1 NMR measurements, a lipophilic extract of the aerial parts of Hypericum atomarium ssp. degenii contained a high percentage (3.1% per weight of dried plant material) of a prenylated phloroglucinol (1). Compound 1, named hyperatomarin, occurring in two tautomeric forms (1a reversible arrow 1b), was isolated by bioactivity-guided preparative TLC and was identified on the basis of spectral data interpretation. This isolated phloroglucinol exhibited activity against Gram-positive (Staphyloccocus aureus and Microccocus luteus) and Gram-positive spore-forming bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and B. IP 5832).

AB - The conformations of the C-6 lactomized germacranolides 1-3 were calculated by applying the PM3 semi-empirical method, The low-temperature H-1-NMR spectra of parthenolide (1) were also measured. The relations between the calculated and the experimentally determined geometries were established using a modified Karplus equation. The applied quantum-chemical calculations proved to be an efficient and easy-to-use tool for die elucidation and prediction of die properties of germacranolide-type sesquiterpene lactones.

AB - The results of the essential oil composition confirm that there are differences between populations within the same subspecies (Satureja montana ssp. montana), between the subspecies (Satureja montana ssp. montana and Satureja montana sap. pisidica) and the species (Satureja montana and S. kitaibelii). The essential oil composition of S. montana ssp. montana is more related to the Satureja montana ssp. pisidica than S. kitaibelii which separates as a whole species. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
