AB - Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is evolving rapidly from a purely analytical technique into a powerful microscopy. Herein, we report the imaging of single cells by photoinduced ECL (PECL; λem = 620 nm) stimulated by an incident near-infrared light (λexc = 1050 nm). The cells were grown on a metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) n-Si/SiOx/Ir photoanode that exhibited stable and bright PECL emission. The large anti-Stokes shift allowed for the recording of well-resolved images of cells with high sensitivity. PECL microscopy is demonstrated at a remarkably low onset potential of 0.8 V; this contrasts with classic ECL, which is blind at this potential. Two imaging modes are reported: (i) photoinduced positive ECL (PECL+), showing the cell membranes labeled with the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex; and (ii) photoinduced shadow label-free ECL (PECL−) of cell morphology, with the luminophore in the solution. Finally, by adding a new dimension with the near-infrared light stimulus, PECL microscopy should find promising applications to image and study single photoactive nanoparticles and biological entities.

AB - The modern lifestyle has increased our utilization of pollutants such as heavy metals, aromatic compounds, and contaminants that are of rising concern, involving pharmaceutical and personal products and other materials that may have an important environmental impact. In particular, the ultimate results of the intense use of highly stable materials, such as heavy metals and chemical restudies, are that they turn into waste materials, which, when discharged, accumulate in environmental water bodies. In this context, the present review presents the application of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensing for water pollutant detection. MOF composites applied as innovative luminophore or luminophore carriers, materials for electrode modification, and the enhancement of co-reaction in ECL sensors have enabled the sensitive monitoring of some of the most common contaminants of emerging concern such as heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and cyanotoxins. Moreover, we provide future trends and prospects associated with ECL MOF composites for environmental sensing.

AB - Triclosan (TCS) is a polychlorinated phenoxy phenol (PCPPs) used as a disinfectant and a broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent in personal hygiene products. TCS easily forms diphenyl ethers and dioxins, which are persistent organic pollutants.

This work used a double approach for the TSC sensing: a) screen-printed (SPE) electrochemical platform for on-site application, modified with lanthanum iron oxide and graphitic carbon nitride composite (LaFeO3/Fe2O3@g-C3N4/SPE); and b) carbon paste electrode (CPE), modified with the same material and used in laboratory conditions. Linear range from 0.1 μM to 10 μM, the limit of detection (LOD) of 29 nM and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 91 nM were obtained for CP electrode in BRBS pH 8. SPE showed the best analytical parameters in BRBS at pH 3, with a linear range from 0.3 μM to 7 μM, LOD of 0.09 μM and LOQ of 0.28 μM. Furthermore, the influence of potential interferents was investigated and proven to be negligible. Determination of TSC was performed to estimate the environmental impact of this compound as well as the practical usefulness of the proposed sensor in the real sample analysis, confirmed with a HPLC analysis.

AB - Stable, water-soluble titanium complexed with mandelic acid was used as a precursor for titanium phosphorus double oxide obtained in hydrothermal conditions in the presence of phosphoric acid. Surprisingly, hydrolysis of organic complexes provided a microstructured sphere with narrow size distribution, low aggregation and a small fraction of morphological irregularities. Obtained microspheres had a complex structure comprised of flakes, whose size could be manipulated with temperature conditions. Samples were found to be electrochemically active against sulcotrione, a well-recognized herbicide. Electrochemical sensors based on the synthesized microspheres were successfully adapted for natural water reservoir analysis and exhibited low levels of detection of 0.61 µM, limit of quantification of 1.86 µM, wide dynamic linear range from 2 to 200 µM, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and in-time stability.

AB - In this paper, electrochemical degradation of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) textile azo dye was examined in regard to different synthesis procedures for making PbO2–graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) electrode. The reaction of with ClO− in the presence of different surfactants, i.e., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetrabutylammonium phosphate (TBAP), under conventional conditions, resulted in the formation of PbO2 with varying morphology. The obtained materials were combined with g-C3N4 for the preparation of the final composite materials, which were then characterized morphologically and electrochemically. After optimizing the degradation method, it was shown that an anode comprising a steel electrode coated with the composite of PbO2 synthesized using CTAB as template and g-C3N4, and using 0.15 M Na2SO4 as the supporting electrolyte, gave the best performance for RB5 dye removal from a 35 mg/L solution. The treatment duration was 60 min, applying a current of 0.17 A (electrode surface 4 cm2, current density of 42.5 mA/cm2), while the initial pH of the testing solution was 2. The reusability and longevity of the electrode surface (which showed no significant change in activity throughout the study) may suggest that this approach is a promising candidate for wastewater treatment and pollutant removal.

AB - Herein, a screen–printed diamond electrode (SPDE) coupled with a “point-of-care” platform (30 µL-drop concepts, single-drop-detection approach) was successfully applied for the electrochemical determination of pterostilbene (PTS). Cyclic voltammetry identified irreversible oxidation of PTS, where oxidation peak was shown to be strongly dependent on the pH of the working environmental. Although the proposition of the detailed electrochemical oxidation mechanism of PTS goes out of the scope of the present research, we have determined the most probable reactive site of our analyte, by utilizing DFT-based reactivity descriptors (Fukui functions). For electrochemical quantification of PTS, oxidation peak at 0.32 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was followed in presence of 0.5 mol L−1 of Briton–Robinson buffer solution (pH = 9). Coupled with the optimized parameters of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), SPDE detected PTS in two linear ranges (first range was from 0.011 to 0.912 µmol L−1; second range was from 0.912 to 4.420 µmol L−1), providing the LOD and LOQ on a nanomolar level (3.1 nmol L−1 and 10.0 nmol L−1, respectively). The selectivity of the optimized DPV method was found to be excellent, with the current changes of less than 7%, in the presence of ten times higher concentrations of the certain interferences. The practical applicability of the SPDE and single-drop-detection approach in dietary supplements (with a declared PTS content of 50 mg/tablet), with the recovery values ranging from 95 to 102%, shows that the developed method has high potential for precise and accurate PTS detection, as well as exceptional miniaturization possibilities of relevant equipment for on-site sensing.

AB - There are ten million people in the world who have Parkinson’s disease. The most potent
medicine for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa (L-DOPA). However, long-term consumption of L-DOPA
leads to the appearance of side effects, as a result of which the control and monitoring of its concentrations are of great importance. In this work, we have designed a new electrochemical sensor for
detecting L-DOPA using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with Eu2O3@Cr2O3 composite
nanoparticles. Rare earth elements, including Eu, are increasingly used to design new electrode
nanocomposites with enhanced electrocatalytic properties. Europium has been considered a significant lanthanide element with greater redox reaction behavior. We conducted a hydrothermal
synthesis of Eu2O3@Cr2O3 and, for the first time, the acquired nanoparticles were used to modify
CPE. The proposed Eu2O3@Cr2O3/CPE electrode was investigated in terms of its electrocatalytic
properties and then used to develop an analytical method for detecting and quantifying L-DOPA.
The proposed sensor offers a wide linear range (1–100 µM), high sensitivity (1.38 µA µM−1
cm−2
) and
a low detection limit (0.72 µM). The practical application of the proposed sensor was investigated by
analyzing commercially available pharmaceutical tablets of L-DOPA. The corresponding results indicate

AB - Efficient cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic water electrolysis rely on the use of expensive platinum group metals (PGMs). However, to achieve economically viable operation, both the content of PGMs must be reduced and their intrinsically strong H adsorption mitigated. Herein, we show that the surface effects of hydrogenated TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays can make osmium, a so far less-explored PGM, a highly active HER electrocatalyst. These defect-rich TiO2 nanostructures provide an interactive scaffold for the galvanic deposition of Os particles with modulated adsorption properties. Through systematic investigations, we identify the synthesis conditions (OsCl3 concentration/temperature/reaction time) that yield a progressive improvement in Os deposition rate and mass loading, thereby decreasing the HER overpotential. At the same time, the Os particles deposited by this procedure remain mainly sub-nanometric and entirely cover the inner tube walls. An optimally balanced Os@TNT composite prepared at 3 mM/55 °C/30 min exhibits a record low overpotential (η) of 61 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm–2, a high mass activity of 20.8 A mgOs–1 at 80 mV, and a stable performance in an acidic medium. Density functional theory calculations indicate the existence of strong interactions between the hydrogenated TiO2 surface and small Os clusters, which may weaken the Os–H* binding strength and thus boost the intrinsic HER activity of Os centers. The results presented in this study offer new directions for the fabrication of cost-effective PGM-based catalysts and a better understanding of the synergistic electronic interactions at the PGM|TiO2 interface.

The results presented in this study offer new directions for the fabrication of cost-effective PGM-based catalysts and a better understanding of the synergistic electronic interactions at the PGM|TiO2 interface.",

AB - With the ever-growing concern for human health and wellbeing, the prenatal period ofdevelopment requires special attention since fetuses can be exposed to various metals through themother. Therefore, this study explored the status of selected toxic (Pb, Cd, Ni, As, Pt, Ce, Rb, Sr, U)and essential trace metals (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in the umbilical cord (UC) sera, maternal sera, andplacental tissue samples of 92 healthy women with normal pregnancies. A further aim focuses on thepotential transplacental transfer of these trace metals. Based on the obtained levels of investigatedelements in clinical samples, it was observed that all of the trace metals cross the placental barrierand reach the fetus. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed significant differences in levels oftoxic Ni, As, Cd, U, Sr, Rb, and essential Mn, Cu, and Zn between all three types of analyzed clinicalsamples. Correlation analysis highlighted As to be an element with levels that differed significantlybetween all tested samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to enhance these findings.PCA demonstrated that Cd, Mn, Zn, Rb, Ce, U, and Sr were the most influential trace metals indistinguishing placenta from maternal and UC serum samples. As, Co, and Cu were responsible forthe clustering of maternal serum samples, and PCA demonstrated that the Pt level in UC sera wasresponsible for the clustering of these samples. Overall, the findings of this study could contribute toa better understanding of transplacental transfer of these trace metals, and shed a light on overalllevels of metal exposure in the population of healthy pregnant women and their fetuses.

AB - The osmotic dehydration (OD) of celery root in sugar beet molasses was studied at three temperatures (20, 35, and 50 °C) and three immersion periods (1, 3, and 5 h) in order to examine the changes in antioxidant potential and phenolic profile of celery root throughout the process. The antioxidant capacity (AOC) of dehydrated samples was evaluated by spectrophotometric and polarographic assays, the total phenolic content by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and the individual phenolic compounds by HPLC-DAD. As a result of OD in molasses, the AOC and phenols content in samples increased proportionally to the augmentation of temperature and the immersion time. Vanillic acid, syringic acid, and catechin were detected in dehydrated samples as a result of transfer from molasses. Compared to fresh celery root, the content of identified phenols in osmodehydrated samples was improved from 1.5 to 6.2 times. Strong correlations between applied assays were obtained, except for the DPPH. Based on the correlation analysis chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, chrysin, catechin, and kaempferol showed the greatest contribution to the overall AOC of osmodehydrated celery root. Molasses, an agro-industrial waste from sugar production, could be valorized as a valuable osmotic solution.

AB - Background: As a consequence of the progressive decline in human semen quality in recent decades, modern epidemiological investigations have identified several trace elements that could be responsible for this phenomenon. However, their levels in semen have not been clearly elucidated, particularly for elements present in ultra-trace levels. Methods: We aimed to determine the levels of 39 (ultra)trace elements and 5 macroelements in human semen samples with confirmed normozoospermia using ICP-based techniques. The research was amplified by analyzing blood samples from the same participants. Results: Among the analyzed (ultra)trace elements in semen samples, Zn is the most and Tm is the least prominent. Zn levels in semen are so high that Zn should be considered as a macroelement in this matrix. The levels of Zn, Rh, Sm, Re, Ir, Tl, Na, and Ca were significantly higher in semen, while the levels of Cu, As, Rb, Gd, Sb, Tb, Tm, Lu, K, and Fe were significantly higher in blood. Correlation analysis of the levels of 44 individual elements in paired semen and blood samples revealed positive correlations between 43 of the elements, particularly for Tl and Pt. An exception was the negative correlation for Cu, which showed that its high level in semen is associated with a low level in blood and contrariwise. Conclusion: The reported data can be used as baseline levels/reference values for 44 elements in human semen. Furthermore, the findings of this study could be relevant for further consideration of male infertility.

AB - Background: Although essential trace elements (ETEs) play pivotal roles in life-supporting biochemical processes, their function in innate and adaptive immunity has not been fully elucidated, particularly during immunization. Furthermore, the association between anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies and ETE levels with vaccine responsiveness has not been investigated. Methods: The present study explored the status of ETEs (Mn, Cu, Zn, and Se) in sera of healthy women before and after vaccination with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a follow-up period of six months. The main aim was to explore links between ETE levels and IgG antibodies produced against Spike glycoprotein's Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD). Results: A recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprising the receptor binding domain was successfully expressed in HEK-293 T cells. The purified protein was suitable for producing a sensitive antibody detection assay for human serum and monitored seropositivity, indicating a transient response with peak anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels 2 months after vaccination. In parallel to increasing antibody titers, serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Se were not affected by vaccination, and concentrations remained relatively constant at the different sampling times during the 6-month observation period. Total serum Zn concentrations were slightly elevated when compared between the first and last sampling dates. Overall, no consistent effects of vaccination on any of the three trace elements analyzed in our study were observed. Conclusion: Vaccination of adult healthy female volunteers with an mRNA vaccine was not associated with consistent changes in serum trace element concentrations over a six-month observation period.

AB - Environmental pollution requires a facile, sustainable, and adjustable approach for the processing. Most of the standard treatment procedures include high temperature and pressure, accompanied by expensive catalysts. Visible light improves decomposing systems of various contaminants from the hydrosphere and atmosphere. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) dragged research interest in the degradation of diverse environmental contaminants, due to its photoactivity under the visible electromagnetic spectrum, production of oxidative species, and a range of relatively simple ways of synthesis. Nowadays, catalytic properties of g-C3N4 are enhanced by expanding surface area, widening of the bandgap, and by the development of doped or copolymer materials. Mechanisms of catalysis using different nanocomposites are given in detail, followed by the extent of degradation of dangerous chemicals. Considering all valuable evolutions of g-C3N4 as an important ingredient in the degeneration of diverse pollutants, here we provide a systematic overview of the nanostructured g-C3N4 used in solving environmental problems.

AB - : Nanoparticles of TiO2 are suitable for many catalytic and photocatalytic applications due
to their extraordinary properties such as superhydrophobicity, semiconductivity, electron-rich, and
environmental compatibility. The main crystalline phases of TiO2
, anatase, and rutile possess different
crystal structures, crystallinity, crystalline sizes, and specific surface areas, and these characteristics
directly affect the catalytic performance of TiO2
. In the present study, domestic carbon material
enhanced with TiO2 nanoparticles was synthesized and used for the construction of a modified
carbon paste electrode. The electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrodes was investigated
depending on the TiO2 crystalline phases in the electrode material. Furthermore, the obtained
working electrode was utilized for triclosan detection. Under optimized experimental conditions, the
developed electrode showed a submicromolar triclosan detection limit of 0.07 µM and a wide linear
range of 0.1 to 15 µM. The relative standard deviations for repeatability and reproducibility were
lower than 4.1%, and with satisfactory selectivity, the proposed system was successfully applied to
triclosan monitoring in groundwater. All these results confirm that the sustainable production of new
and domestically prepared materials is of great benefit in the field of electrocatalysis and that the
morphology of such produced materials is strongly related to their catalytic properties.

AB - The problem of wastewater has long been ubiquitous and has great consequences for the environment and its inhabitants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have enormous potential for the treatment of wastewaters polluted with azo dyes. The amount of energy that can be produced from a single-chamber MFC is sufficient to perform decolorization and degradation of such dyes, which are widely used in the textile industry. This study on the azo dye, reactive black 5 (RB5), provides an alternative method through three parallel-connected MFCs to obtain electricity that directly serves for the dye’s electrochemical degradation. We examined degradation followed by decolorization of RB5 using Fe and Pt electrodes, together with H2O2, to achieve the electro-Fenton process. The amount of voltage produced (295 mV), the current density (276 mA m−3) and the power density (50 mW m−3) were sufficient to degrade 25 mg L-1 RB5 dye with 0.5 mM H2O2 in just 2 h. The dye degradation mechanism was investigated using UV–VIS, FT-IR and HPLC-MS/MS. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products was assessed using a bacterial model, Aliivibrio fischeri. These tests showed that there was successful degradation of the dye to products whose toxicity is less than that of RB5.

AB - Honokiol is neolignan present in the magnolia bark. It displays versatile pharmacological properties—neuroprotective and anxiolytic effect, anti-cancer activity and antimicrobial effect being the most important. This paper aims to develop a voltammetric non-enzymatic biosensor for honokiol detection, quantification and monitoring in drugs and cosmetic products. The materials used in this study were synthesized and characterized by HR-XRPD, SEM, ATR-FTIR and electrochemical methods. Bi2O3, being a p-type semiconductor, was used as an electrode material. Both its semiconductivity and electrocatalytic properties result from lattice structure defects, which differ on the surface and in the bulk of the bismuth oxide crystal, and therefore are crystal size dependent. The influence of the particle size of Bi2O3 on its electrocatalytic properties was studied, and it was confirmed that Bi2O3 nanoparticles have better overall conductive/resistive and catalytic characteristics than microribbons and that the optimal electrode modification for sensing application was obtained by Bi2O3@SWCNT composite material preparation. Here, we established a sensitive electrochemical sensing platform for honokiol detection based on CP electrode modified with bismuth oxide nanoparticles and SWCNT with the 0.17 μM limit of detection, and linear operating range from 0.1 to 50 μM. The effect of potential interferents on honokiol detection was explored. Obtained results in the interference tests and the real sample analysis suggest that the developed approach is selective, accurate and reproducible. Due to the low detection limit and a wide working range, the proposed sensing platform opens great opportunities for further construction of sensors for honokiol detection and monitoring in the pharmaceutical industry and medicinal chemistry.

AB - In this work hydrogen production activity of a series of the nickel-loaded, nitrogen-doped titanate-based photocatalysts was tested by water splitting reaction in isopropanol-water mixture. The utilization of ammonium ions during catalyst synthesis and subsequent calcination led to successful formation of nitrogen-doped nanotubular titanates with lower sodium content, favored titanate-to-anatase transformation and enhanced textural, morphological and interface properties. The photocatalytic tests revealed that hydrogen production activity of nitrogen-doped titanates is ten times higher compared to nitrogen-free titanates. The presence of highly photoactive anatase phase, improved anatase crystallinity and lower amount of sodium ions are found to be decisive factors for increased hydrogen production activity. The optimal nickel loading was determined and the variation in photocatalytic activity with reduction temperature was explained. Stability tests gave quantitative analysis of the effects of reaction products accumulation and photocorrosion on the catalyst deactivation.

AB - According to recent research, even low levels of environmental chemicals, particularly heavy metals, can considerably disrupt placental homeostasis. This review aims to explore the profile of non-essential trace metals in placental tissues across the globe and to specify trace metal(s) that can be candidates for impaired placental health. Accordingly, we conducted an extensive survey on relevant databases of peer-reviewed papers published in the last two decades. Among a considerable number of non-essential trace metals, arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) were identified as the most detrimental to placental health. Comparative analysis showed remarkable differences in placental levels of these trace metals worldwide. Based on current data reported across the globe, a median (min–max) range from 0.55 to 15 ng/g for placental As levels could be deemed safe. The placental Cd and Pb levels were markedly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Occupationally exposed pregnant women had several orders of magnitude higher Cd, Pb, and Hg levels in placental tissues than non-occupationally exposed women. Also, we concluded that even low-level exposure to As, Cd, Pb, and Hg could be deleterious to proper fetal development. This review implies the need to reduce exposure to non-essential trace metals to preserve placental health and prevent numerous poor pregnancy outcomes. Overall, the information presented is expected to help plan future fundamental and applied investigations on the placental toxicity of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Compounds used in the fashion industry effect the water bodies in the vicinity of textile factories, resulting in the visible coloration of surface water. Fe-doped graphite-based in house prepared electrodes were used in the Fenton--like degradation of Reactive Blue 52 (RB52). The electrodes consisting of high-density graphite in three granulation sizes and three levels of Fe content were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of Fe in the electrodes and H2O2 concentration in synthetic textile wastewater were optimized. Additionally, the size of graphite grains was varied to investigate whether it effects the degradation rate. Under only 10 min of electro-Fenton degradation, a system with 10 mmol dm-3 of H2O2 and an electrode made of 7 % of Fe and 70 µm of granulation size of graphite, degraded over 75 % of RB52, and over 99 % after 40 min of treatment. The obtained results indicate that the proposed approach could be beneficial in the field of novel materials for environmental application and that in house prepared carbon could be an excellent replacement for commercially available supports.

AB - A series of novel polyurethane network/organoclay nanocomposites (PUN-NCs) with different soft segment contents (30–60 wt%) was prepared by in situ polymerization in solution and characterized. PU network (PUN) was made from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based macrodiol as the soft segment and 4,4′-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate and hyperbranched polyester of the third pseudo generation as the hard segment. Nanocomposites were obtained by dispersion of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) nanofiller (0.5 wt%). The influence of the soft segment content on the functional properties of PUN-NCs was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), small-angle and near wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analyses (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling behavior, water absorption and contact angle measurements. The biodegradation process was evaluated using mixed cultures of microorganisms that originated from soil. Mechanically strong PUN-NC materials in the form of films were obtained, pointing to good dispersion and the existence of exfoliated morphology of Cloisite 30B within the PUN matrix, and the nanocomposites with the abovementioned characteristics were obtained as a function of the soft segment content. The decrease of the soft segment content induced a higher degree of phase separated microstructure, increase of Young's modulus, hardness, plasticity, storage modulus, glass transition temperature, surface free energy and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran, but at the same time, it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density and hydrophobicity of PUN-NCs. By choosing adequate soft segment content, the prepared materials can potentially be designed for coating applications, such as top coating materials in environmental conditions.
