trajati.

AB - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals with extremely strong C-F bonds. Due to their thermal stability, acid resistance, and high surface activity, they have been widely used for several decades in various consumer products. PFAS has been detected in water, soil, sediment, air, food, and biota samples on all continents and due to this are recognized as environmental and human health risk (Carlson et al. 2022). In the last decade, several available technologies were tested for the remediation of PFAS-polluted environments, such as adsorption, filtration, thermal destruction, oxidation/reduction, and soil washing, but several disadvantages were reported (Bolan et al., 2021). We hypothesize that by using advanced oxidation techniques followed by microbial treatment decrease in the concentration of PFOA as a PFAS model compound will occur. In the beginning, we tested separately abiotic and biotic degradation of PFOA. Target LC-MS/MS was used for quantitative analysis of PFOA decrease, and for detecting degradation products, nontargeted LC-MS/MS analysis was used. In the photocatalysis study, we used selected Ti and Al-based photocatalysts. The experiments were conducted at 20 °C in an open cylindrical polypropylene reactor, and a simulated solar radiation lamp (Solimed BH Quarzlampen) was used as a light source. Microbial communities were isolated from the locations in Serbia, Japan, and Italy known for their pollution with PFAS, and enrichment was conducted on the media supplemented with ppm values of PFOA (Beskoski et al., 2018). Microbial communities were used as inoculum in the PFOA biodegradation study.

AB - The problem of wastewater has long been ubiquitous and has great consequences for the environment and its inhabitants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have enormous potential for the treatment of wastewaters polluted with azo dyes. The amount of energy that can be produced from a single-chamber MFC is sufficient to perform decolorization and degradation of such dyes, which are widely used in the textile industry. This study on the azo dye, reactive black 5 (RB5), provides an alternative method through three parallel-connected MFCs to obtain electricity that directly serves for the dye’s electrochemical degradation. We examined degradation followed by decolorization of RB5 using Fe and Pt electrodes, together with H2O2, to achieve the electro-Fenton process. The amount of voltage produced (295 mV), the current density (276 mA m−3) and the power density (50 mW m−3) were sufficient to degrade 25 mg L-1 RB5 dye with 0.5 mM H2O2 in just 2 h. The dye degradation mechanism was investigated using UV–VIS, FT-IR and HPLC-MS/MS. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products was assessed using a bacterial model, Aliivibrio fischeri. These tests showed that there was successful degradation of the dye to products whose toxicity is less than that of RB5.

AB - The characterization and cleanup of groundwater contamination in hazardous-waste sites are of significant engineering and scientific importance. This study analyzes biodegradation fingerprints in groundwater, 25 years after the accidental leakage of kerosene (jet fuel) at the site in central Serbia. The long-term existence of hydrocarbon contamination and the presence of indigenous microbiological populations capable of biodegradation have been confirmed by the results of GCxGC-MS chromatography and microbiological characterization. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), geochemical indicators, and other parameters were spatially analyzed to provide insight into biodegradation occurrence. The lowest concentrations of electron acceptors (O2, NO3-, and SO42-) and the highest concentrations of microbial metabolic products (Mn and Fe) overlap in the piezometers closest to the source of contamination, due to the occurrence of different biodegradation mechanisms. Based on the analysis of redox-sensitive compounds, the mixed oxic-anoxic processes in groundwater also correspond to the aforementioned zone, as confirmed by the redox potential (Eh) measurements. The results of cross-study analysis reveal further reduction of hydrocarbon contamination, the occurrence of less anoxic redox processes, and the increase of oxic conditions in groundwater. Overall, the results provide clear evidence of the biodegradation effects in groundwater and insight into their evolution under natural attenuation processes.

AB - We investigated the capability of microorganisms isolated from environments polluted with perfluoroalkyl adds (PFAAs) to conduct biotransformation of these emerging pollutants. Two different microbial consortia (chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria and total yeast and molds) were isolated from two river sediments in Saitama and Osaka, Japan, known for long term pollution with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The microbial consortia were incubated in the presence of added PFOS and PFOA, and decreases in concentrations of these compounds were between 46-69% and 16-36%, respectively. Decreases in concentrations were, in part, due to sorption on biomass, but defluorinated PFOS and PFOA products were not detected. However, untargeted analysis suggested the presence of several metabolites found only in samples from consortia with PFOS and PFOA but not in the control samples. Molecular formula candidates were narrowed down to two options, C18H28O5F and C21H27O4. It was assumed that these formulas were associated with unsaturated monofluorinated fatty acids and hydrocarbons with multiple unsaturated bonds or ring structures. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. AB - The aim of this paper was to investigate whether changes in the quantity and structure of humic acids (HA) occur during bioremediation of waste mazute (heavy residual fuel oil). The effects of humification on the structure of HA were evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), potentiometric titrations, the ratio of absorbances at 465 and 665 nm (E4/E6 ratio) and the ratio. Also, the quality of humification was monitored by determining parameters which are important for measuring the evolution of humic substances (HS), such as CHA/CFA (the humic acidifulvic acidratio), the rate of extraction (TE) and the index of polymerization (IP). An increase of the content of HA from 0.23% to 0.70% was observed during the bioremediation process. The FT-IR spectra and 04 ratio of HA extracted at the beginning and the end of the process indicate structural changes during the bioremediation process. The groups containing aromatic and carboxylic carbon increased, resulting in HA structures of higher aromaticity. An increase of the B4/E6 ratio during bioremediation treatment implied the enrichment of HA with functional oxygen groups. Potentiometric titrations of HA solution showed increases in the buffering and the redox capacities of HA during the bioremediation process. The results of parameters of humification showed an increase of the compositional carbon in HA at the end, compared to at the start, of bioremediation, while the carbon that belonged to fulvic acids (FA) reduced by 44%. Transformation into HA is the likely cause of this observed reduction. The TE and the IP demonstrated that humification occured during the bioremediation process. According to the available data, this is the first report on synthesis of HS during bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

AB - Ni nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (NDC) prepared via salt-melt synthesis with a hierarchical porosity were successfully applied as the catalyst for the degradation of Kraft lignin. It is shown that Ni-NDC is more efficient when compared to Ni nanoparticles deposited on an N-free carbon support, prepared with similar porosity features (Ni-C) and to Ni nanoparticles deposited on a commercial carbon (Ni-Cref). The efficiency of these materials was compared for reactions performed both in batch and flow reactors, highlighting the effect of the reactor setup on the stability of the recovered catalysts.

AB - Iron and sulfur oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic acidophilic bacteria, such as Acidithiobacillus species, hold the dominant role in mine environments characterized by low pH values and high concentrations of reduced sulfur and iron compounds, such as ores, rocks and acid drainage waters from mines. On the other hand, heterotrophic microorganisms, especially their biofilms, from these specific niches are receiving increased attention, but their potential eco-physiological roles have not been fully understood. Biofilms are considered a threat to human health, but biofilms also have beneficial properties as they are deployed in waste recycling and bioremediation systems. We have analyzed interactions of the metal tolerant heterotrophic microorganisms in biofilms with iron oxidizing autotrophic bacteria both from the sulphidic mine environment (copper mine Bor, Serbia). High tolerance to Cu2+, Cd2+ and Cr6+ and the presence of genetic determinants for the respective metal tolerance and biofilm-forming ability was shown for indigenous heterotrophic bacteria that included strains of Staphylococcus and Rhodococcus. Two well characterized bacteria-Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (known biofilm former) and Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 (known metal resistant representative) were also included in the study. The interaction and survivability of autotrophic iron oxidizing Acidithiobacillus bacteria and biofilms of heterotrophic bacteria during co-cultivation was revealed. Finally, the effect of heterotrophic biofilms on bioleaching process with indigenous iron oxidizing Acidithiobacillus species was shown not to be inhibitory under in vitro conditions.

AB - Perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) were analyzed in sediment samples from the wastewater canal draining the industrial complex of Pancevo, Serbia (oil refinery, petrochemical plant, and fertilizer factory). The canal is directly connected to Europe's second largest river, the Danube, which drains its water into the Black Sea. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) up to 5.7 ng d(-1) weight (dw) and total Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) up to 6.3 ng g(-1) dw were detected. Compared to other reports, high levels of PFOS were found, even though PFCs are not used in the industrial production associated with this canal. The PFOS concentration in water was recalculated using the adsorption coefficient, K-oc from literature. Using the average output of wastewater from the canal, a mass load of 1.38 kg PFOS per year discharged in the Danube River has been calculated, which undoubtedly points to the contribution to global persistent organic pollution of surface waters originating from this industrial place.

AB - Mentha piperita L. (Lamiaceae) was cultivated under the controlled laboratory conditions in the presence of varying levels of trivalent and hexavalent chromium in order to determine its capacity to control chromium uptake and its tolerance limit. The plants were grown in pots at 25 degrees C with controlled soil moisture (about 80 % of the water retention capacity). The soil was treated with increasing concentrations of Cr(NO3)3 (40, 80, 120, and 200 mg kg(-1)) and K2Cr2O7 (2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg kg(-1)). A control group of plants was grown without the addition of chromium to the soil. For each concentration, three acidity levels were tested: natural, one pH unit below and one above the natural acidity of the soil (pH(2) 6, pH(1) 5 and pH(3) 7). The plant samples were digested according to the standard procedure and chromium content was determined by GFAAS. For all plants, the transportation index was calculated and the results (expressed in mg kg(-1)) at pH(1), pH(2) and pH(3), respectively, were: 0.21-0.80, 0.06-1.06 and 0.04-0.52. The recoveries were good (72.73-115.3 %) as evidenced by the analysis of certified reference materials (NIST SRM 8433 - Corn Bran and NIST SRM 1547 - Peach Leaves). The mobility of chromium through the plants tissues is discussed in regard to its competition with iron and manganese for transport binding sites; hence Mn and Fe were also determined.

AB - The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Ba and B in 26 herbal drugs of special importance in phytopharmacywere studied. Flame atomic absorption and emission spectrometry (FAAS, FAES), as well as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), were applied in this work. The whole procedure, from sample preparation, via dissolution, to measurements, was validated by using CRM (NIST 1573a-tomato leaves), and the obtained recovery values are in the range from 91 to 102%. Drug samples originated from medicinal plants cultivated in Serbia contained Cu (4.47-14.08 mg kg(-1)), Zn (8.4-54.5 mg kg(-1)), Mn (9-155 mg kg(-1)), Fe (47-546 mg kg(-1)), K (0.20-6.24%), Ca (0.18-1.84%), Mg (0.13-1.09%), Al (16-416 mg kg(-1)), Ba (11.70-84.83 mg kg(-1)) and B (5.1-118.7 mg kg(-1)). In order to get a better insight into the elemental patterns, a common chemometric approach to data evaluation was used. Four significant factors identified by principal component analysis (PCA) were attributed partly to the significant influential sources and high mobility of some elements thus referring to potential anthropogenic contamination as well. AB - Elemental profiles of the total analyte content of major, minor and trace elements (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Ba and 13) in 8 herbal drugs, originating from medicinal plants of the family Lamiacae, were determined. Flame atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy (FAAS/FAES), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) were applied, and the advantages and limitations of these techniques are also discussed. The whole procedure, from sample preparation via dissolution to the actual measurements, was validated byusing CRM (NIST 1573a-Tomato leaves). The recovery values obtained were in the range 90.64 - 101.58%. A high degree of similarity in their elemental profiles was noticed from the results of qualitative analysis, while quantitative analysis shows significant diversity due to the variety of the influencing sources. The medicinal plants investigated in this work contained Cu (5.92 - 14.79 mg kg(-1)), Zn (15.0 - 43.0 mg kg(-1)), Mn (25 - 111 mg kg(-1)), Fe (74 - 546 mg kg(-1)), K (1.80 - 6.24 %), Ca (0.90 - 1.43 %), Mg (0. 17 - 0.67 %), Al (49 - 378 mg kg(-1)), Ba (15.53 - 69.84 mg kg(-1)) and B (34.7 - 56.5 mg kg(-1)).
Analizirane biljne droge sadrže: Cu (5.92 - 14.79 mg kg-1), Zn (15.0 - 43.0mg kg-1), Mn (25 - 111 mg kg-1), Fe (74 - 546 mg kg-1), K (1.80 - 6.24 %), Ca (0.90 - 1.43 %), Mg (0.17 - 0.67 %), Al (49 - 378 mg kg-1), Ba (15.53 - 69.84 mg kg-1) and B (34.7 - 56.5mg kg -1).
