AB - Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) serves as the active ingredient in medications designed to treat
relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, yet there is a notable absence of specific monographs
for this compound in available pharmacopeia’s. Nevertheless, various instrumental
chromatographic techniques are employed to determine the concentration of DMF across
diverse matrices.
This study endeavours to highlight the viability of merging structural instrumental
analytical methods with a simple classical volumetric approach utilizing a cost-effective, non-
toxic, and natural indicator - the ethanol extract of Curcuma longa powder. The primary aim
is to accurately determine DMF assay in commercial samples without utilizing certified
reference materials (CRM).

AB - Undecylenic acid (UDA), a medium-chain fatty acid industrially derived from castor oil,
naturally occurs in black elderberry. UDA has attracted significant attention due to diverse
applications in pharmaceutical formulations, particularly as a topical antifungal agent. Recent
research has even hinted potential role of UDA in inducing apoptosis in tumor cells, further
elevating its importance in therapeutic contexts.
The primary objective of this study was to design a rapid and straightforward analytical
method for determining UDA content in commercially available preparations. The presence
of a terminal double bond in UDA enables it to undergo addition reactions, rendering it an
invaluable tool for quantifying UDA concentration in commercial products.

AB - Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a part of overall solid waste which is generated in human
society, besides commercial and industrial waste. Depending on the dangerous characteristics
affecting human health and the environment, it can be inert, non-hazardous and hazardous.
Subcategory of waste, which represents over 66% of MSW is household waste, generated
from domestic source. Around 1% of household waste is defined as household hazardous
waste (HHW).
There are several definitions of household hazardous waste, depending on legislation of
different countries. A comprehensive definition is given by the UK National Household
Hazardous Waste Forum (NHHWF): “any material discarded by a household, which is
difficult to dispose of, or which puts human health or the environment at risk because of its
chemical or biological nature”. HHW is a heterogeneous waste group with flammable,
corrosive, reactive, caustic, and toxic characteristics. Quantity and type of HHW generating
on source depends on average standard of living. Citizens in everyday life are not completely
and directly informed about the handling of their waste. The aim of this study is to emphasize
the need to inform citizens more closely about the characteristics of HHW and how improper
waste management can affect their health, habitation, and wider environment.

AB - • Introduction and scope
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a widespread pollutant gas that releases during many industrial processes [1].
SO2 has significant environmental and health implications [2], making its accurate quantification
essential. The aim of this paper was to develop a simple and efficient laboratory-scale method for the
sampling and quantification of SO2 at its source.
• Methodology
SO2, generated in the reaction between sodium metabisulfite and orthophosphoric acid, was routed
through a condenser to a recipient vessel containing an absorptive solution of sodium hydroxide. The
absorption of the SO2 was performed with a consistent gas flow rate, facilitated by the use of a vacuum
pump within the reaction system. Aqueous solution of potassium dichloroiodate(I) [3] was employed
for volumetric determination of sulfite content in the final absorptive solution.
• Results
Based on the results of sulfite content determination in the final absorptive solution, which exhibited an
analytical recovery of SO2 ranging from 83% to 96%, the effectiveness of the proposed method is
demonstrated.
• Conclusion
According to the obtained results and the multifaceted challenges associated with the sampling of
gaseous fluids, this study can serve as a valuable guideline for the sampling of gaseous mixtures
containing SO2. Usage of a vacuum pump in the sampling system helps minimize the loss of gaseous
components in the final absorptive solution, whereas the described titrimetric method enables a simple
and efficient analytical procedure for determining SO2 content. Further research and refinement of this
method could lead to its practical application in environmental monitoring and industrial processes.

AB - • Introduction and scope
The use of hazardous chemicals during laboratory analyses, experiments, and research leads to the
generation of hazardous waste [1]. Proper primary sorting of this waste can be challenging due to the
necessity of preventing unwanted interactions and the formation of even more hazardous secondary
substances [2]. The aim of this study is to provide insight into the management of hazardous chemical
waste in Serbian laboratories.
• Methodology
A preliminary survey conducted in August 2023 with chemists and physical chemists (n=11) employed
in different laboratories in Serbia was based on two fundamental questions: (1) How do you sort
hazardous chemical waste, and (2) Do you believe it is necessary to have additional education and
training on this issue?
• Results
The survey results are as follows: 73% of participants primarily sort liquid hazardous chemical waste
into three categories: inorganic, halogenated organic, and non-halogenated organic waste. In addition,
100% of respondents consider it would be necessary to have additional education on laboratory
hazardous chemical waste and its primary categorization since it is a part of their daily work.
• Conclusion
From presented results and after studying the existing Serbian legal regulations in the field of hazardous
waste management [3] [4], a lack of clear and unambiguous protocols defining precise methods for the
primary sorting of laboratory hazardous chemical waste can be observed. In the context of future
studies, a more in-depth exploration of this subject is warranted, with a particular emphasis on offering
recommendations for the enhancement of the legal framework within this domain [5]

AB - • Introduction and objective
Creosote is used as wood preservative all over the world. Over 1500 different chemical compounds are
present in creosote [1]. Most of these molecules have render toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic effects.
Impregnated wood, as construction material for bridges, railroad ties, utility poles, have an
environmental impact through the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenolic compounds, N-
, O- and S- heterocycles emissions [2]. The aim of this review is to draw attention on waste management
of creosote impregnated wood.
• Review and results
PAHs constitutes approximately 85 % of creosote content. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) in 1976. made up a list of 16 PAHs to estimate risks to human health from drinking water [3].
Those 16 “priority PAHs” represent only 15 % from all of those present in creosote [4]. EU directives
75/442/EEC, 91/156/EEC, and 94/67/EEC, order that any waste that exceeds the critical creosote limit
should be regarded as hazardous [4]. PAHs content over 100 mg/kgdm in solid waste classified that
waste as hazardous, according to Law on Waste Management in Serbia (Regulation on categories,
examination and classification of waste, Official Gazette of RS, No. 56/2010) [5].
• Conclusion
Can we and should we underestimate phenolic compounds and N-, O- and S- heterocycles which are
also present in creosote impregnated wood among PAHs? Toxicological effects and environmental
impact of every single compound in creosote composition are not known. Into addition to over 1500
chemicals following PAHs in creosote, each ones waste creosote impregnated wood should be regarded
as hazardous.

AB - In contemporary society, environmental pollution and hazardous chemical waste are pressing
concerns. This study investigates reporting trends related to environmental pollution and
hazardous chemical waste in twelve scientific journals and daily newspapers. Notably, we
found that the year 2013 marked a significant peak with the highest number of articles on these
topics. Understanding the publishing and reporting trends of these subjects is pivotal for
informed public education and underscores the significant influence of scientific research in
shaping media reporting. As the global community faces increasing environmental challenges,
accurate and scientific-based reporting is essential for fostering public awareness and
facilitating effective solutions.
