AB - The aim of this study was to investigate a possibility of synthesis of porous ceramics with controlled open porosity, which could be used as sorbents and catalyst supports. Two organic additives were used to obtain open porosity: polystyrene beads and cellulose fibers, which are mixed with kaolin clay powder and the appropriate water content. Samples were sintered at 1050 oC for 1 h. Characterization of the obtained products included X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental CHNS analysis. In addition, porosity was examined by quantification of visual information. The specific surface areas were determined by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. Also, density and compressive strength of the obtained samples were assessed. It was determined that by sintering, the organic component completely leaves the system. For samples prepared with polystyrene beads and with cellulose fibers, satisfactory mechanical properties were obtained: compressive strengths were 1.42 and 1.56 MPa, respectively. It was noted that significantly higher open porosity was obtained by using polystyrene beads as a sacrificial template (porosity of ̴56 %) instead of cellulose fibers (porosity of ̴6 %).

AB - In the hydrometallurgical process for getting the zine, after acid leaching, zinc-ferric sludge as the byproduct is further treated in the so-called jarosite procedure In the jarosite procedure, Pb and Ag are valorized, and Fe is removed through the residue. Besides Fe, in the jarosite residue, the other impurities are present (2n. Cu Ni, Cr, Co, As, Cd, Pb, 5b, Ge, Ga, In) which could be mobile in the environment causing the hazardous consequences [11]. The main goal of our research is to determine the activation energy of the decomposition of jarosite using thermogravimetry analysis. The thermogravimetric curve (IG) shows three segments, which indicate that the degradation of jarosite occurs in three steps. Below 200 °C, mass loss is 1.1%, due to adsorbed water evaporation. At an interval of 285-440 °C (with DTG maximum at 418 °C) deammonicifiation and dehydroxylation occurred. Also, structural water is released above 390 °C, so that three reactions occur simultaneously in this temperature range - which justifies the high activation energy on a - 0.3 and temperature of 420 °C (Figure b, c). Jarosite decomposed into ferrous sulfate and hematite with a weight loss of 22.6%. The mass loss in the range 520 to 750 °C (DTG maximum at 625 °C) is attributed to the loss of sulfate as $Oz. Two minima (420.1 and 625.9 °C) are observed on the DSC curve, which indicates that the process of jarosite decomposition is endothermic. The Fell could oxidize from intermediate phases, which is favorable to get Fe(ILD) that will later precipitate in the water. For kinetic analysis, we used Kissinger-Akahira Sunose (KAS) integral isoconversional method for the determination of Ea. The energy of activation changes with conversion, a, and the average value is 235.4 kJ/mol - which is higher than the literature 197.7 kJ/mol [2]; this is expected due to the complexity in the chemical composition of industrial jarosite residue.

AB - Jarosite waste is classified as hazardous one. It contains toxic elements (Cd, As, Hg) with strong leaching toxicity and metal mobility. Nevertheless, jarosite waste is usually landfilled which have an adverse impact on the environment and human health. In addition, jarosite waste contains significant amounts of the base (Fe, Zn, Pb. Cu), critical (In, Ge, Ga), and precious metals (Au, Ag) which should not be discarded but recovered [1]. This paper presents thermodynamic modelling of roasting of non-standard Pb/Ag Jarosite. This approach enables the determination of optimal process conditions for product formation with required phase composition, and thus valorizations of valuable metals. Thermodynamic data for the detailed analysis of roasting were calculated using HSC Chemistry Software v. 9.9.2.3 [2]. The main objectives were the determination of the temperature effect and ratio of input material vs. sulphating and oxidizing agent on the formation of the required roasting product phase composition. To determine the stability of the roasting product compounds, modelling of the phase stability diagrams was done.
The change of the standard Gibbs free energy (ΔrG°) versus the temperature of analyzed transformation reactions the examined system suggests thermodynamical possibility at a temperature higher than 700 °C. Also, the results of thermodynamic calculations, within the equilibrium composition model, showed that the maximum content of hematite, and metal sulphates (Cu, Pb and Zn), as required product compounds, can be obtained within the temperature range of 700-750 °C. Phase stability modelling confirmed formation of the mentioned phases When logarithmic partial pressure of oxygen and sulphur is - 4.5 bar and -20.0 bar, respectively.

AB - The rising criticality of technologically inevitably metals and the continuous growth of the waste electronics promote a scientific need for development of innovative recycling process, both efficient and selective. Experimental results showed primarily that by pyrometallurgical treatment it is difficult to achieve selectivity, and secondary that the distribution of metals in melting products is too complicated, deviating from the experiential and expected. Therefore, application of an integral pyro - hydrometallurgical treatment is suggested for improved raw materials efficiency. Successful implementation of the developed state-of-art technological process, guarantee more efficient approach to recycling processes, production of new materials which supports the concepts of sustainable development and cleaner production. Proposed technological solution is applicable in industry with relatively low investments compared to expected revenues, allowing companies to become competitive in the regional market and beyond, which is particularly important for small and medium enterprises with lower operating capacities. Techno-economic justification and integral pyro - hydrometallurgical process for waste electronics recycling is presented. AB - In this paper thermodynamic modeling of sulfidation of non-standard Pb/Ag - Jarosite is shown, in order to propose optimal technological process for valuable metals recovery. Given the current state of natural resources, demand and consumption, sustainable production of critical metals, especially technological metals, is focus of this research. Neutral leaching residue, Pb/Ag - Jarosite, as a primary zinc production by-product is usually disposed at landfills, despite the fact that contains recyclable base (Zn, Pb, Cu), precious (Ag) and technological, critical metals (In, Ge, Ga). Thermodynamic data for detailed sulfidation behavior of technological metals contained in Pb/Ag - Jarosite were calculated using HSC Chemistry Software v. 9.0 in order to recommend optimal recycling process conditions. The main objectives were determination of temperature effect, input material/sulfidation agent ratio and modeling of phase stability diagrams of chosen technological metal sulfides. Synergetic metallurgy activities including utilization of primary and secondary raw materials can be result of this process modeling.

AB - Waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste) continuously growing and represent an on-going environmental problem. At the same time, as the material composition is changing following high-tech industry development, the complexity of e-waste makes its processing difficult. The inability of the industrial sector to adequately respond, leads to irreversible losses of valuable materials contained in e-waste, particularly in waste printed circuit boards (PCBs). Over the years, different processing approaches including a combination of mechanical pre-processing conducted to reduce particle size and separate metallic from non-metallic fraction, and pyro-, hydro-, electro-, biometallurgical end-processing methods are applied. However, dust obtained during the mechanical pre-processing stage, apart from glass fibres and polymers, contains a significant amount of valuable metals. Technological methods for recycling are in constant development aiming to minimize waste and negative environmental impact. The aim of this paper is the proposal of methodology for utilisation of dust obtained after mechanically treated e-waste. Through detailed physical-chemical characterisation, pyro-hydrometallurgical processing and determination of energy potential, the results of this study can enable further technological process development. Valorisation of e-waste ultimately leads to material efficiency and enables accomplishment of circular economy demands.

AB - This paper presents sintered materials for use as contacts produced via novel synthesis method of
starting powders by combination of explored conventional routes of thermochemical synthesis and
mechanical alloying.
Starting raw materials for powder synthesis by thermochemical route were soluble salts, nitrates of
copper and aluminum of p.a. quality, dissolved in distilled water (50wt.% solution) in suitable ratio
for final powder to contain 50wt.% of Al2O3 in structure. Nitrate solution was spray dried and
subjected to heat treatment (900 ºC/1h). Obtained oxides were reduced in hydrogen atmosphere
(flow rate 20L/h at 350 °C for 1h) in order to obtain composite of Cu-Al2O3. Produced powders
were used for mechanical alloying of atomized copper (5h, 300 min-1). Final amount of alumina
Al2O3 in composite powder were 1, 1.5 and 2 wt.%. After mechanical alloying obtained powders
were compacted by a uniaxial pressing (8×32×3mm, 500 kN). Sintering of samples was performed
in hydrogen atmosphere in isothermal conditions at five different temperatures in the range from
725-925 °C for 15 to 120 min.
Results of characterization show, that increase of Al2O3 content has more noticeable effect on the
electrical conductivity and hardness than sintering temperature and time. With increase of Al2O3
from 1 to 1.5 wt.% there is a slight decrease in both investigated properties, while with increase up
to 2 wt.% Al2O3 significant decrease in electrical conductivity and hardness of sintered samples is
observed.
According to achieved results optimum sintering parameters for composite materials produced by
novel synthesis method based on copper with dispersed 1% Al2O3 are 875 ºC/60 min.
Based on the achieved results, this method provides production of contact materials with good
combination of electrical and mechanical properties, but with estimated lower production costs.

AB - The aim of this research was to study the effect of graphite addition in the process of synthesis of tribological materials based on tin sulphides. The tin sulphides powders were synthesized from selected precursors by pyrometallurgical method in rotary tilting tube furnace. The thermodynamic parameters of the synthesis were determined using HSC Chemistry software modelling package. In addition, the synthesis process was also characterized by the thermal analysis method: simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DCS-TGA). The characterization of the synthesized tin sulphides powders included analysis of chemical composition by optical emission spectroscopy, phase composition identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and examination of morphology, as well as elemental composition by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The hexagonal SnS2 and orthorhombic Sn2S3 phases were formed after the thermal treatment of starting powders in nitrogen atmosphere. The obtained results indicate the positive effects of the graphite addition which enables the synthesis of tin sulphide powders with appropriate content of sulphide phases with minimal loss of sulphur.

AB - Reuse of waste is one of the main principles of sustainable development and circular economy. Secondary alkaline lead slag is a hazardous waste generated in the recycling process of lead-acid batteries that may be suitable in construction materials. The environmental impact of the use of lead slag as a partial replacement of fine aggregates in the cement-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) process for the preparation of concrete was studied in this paper. Solidified products containing 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% slag were laboratory tested by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) analyses and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). At the same time, the leachability of toxic elements from solidified products with a high percent of slag was evaluated under environmental conditions for during one year. The results of the UCS and TCLP indicated that utilization of this type of slag in cement-based applications may be justified with its controlled addition. However, the described application of the slag was disputed due to the high release of As under high alkaline environmental conditions. Eh-pH analyses and the geochemical modeling using the software PHREEQC were evaluated, as well as the mechanism of pollutant (Pb, As) immobilization (precipitation, adsorption) as a function of pH conditions.

AB - Secondary alkaline lead slag (SALS), generated during lead–acid batteries recycling, is a hazardous waste due to its high reactivity, solubility, and migration of toxic elements. After pulverization caused by storage under atmospheric condition for 30 days, the SALS was sieved and coarse fraction (+ 1 mm) was returned to the recycling process. Finer fraction (− 1 mm) was treated by water leaching to remove soluble compounds. SALS compositions prior and after the pre-treatment and effects of liquid-to-solid ratio, stirring rate, and temperature on Na, S, Fe, As, and Pb leaching from SALS were analyzed. The results show that maximal leaching degrees were 95.78%, 75.32%, and 79.89% for Na, S, and As, respectively (20 l kg−1, 600 min−1, 333 K, 120 min). Leachability of Na and S from SALS was controlled by dissolution of Na2SO4 that could be recovered from leaching solution. Isothermal As leaching is described by diffusion mechanism with activation energy of 15.5 kJ mol−1. Insoluble Pb and Fe sulfates, sulfides, and oxides remained in the SALS. Pre-treated SALS, with reduced mass up to 32%, was solidified in cement matrix. The results of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and unconfined compressive strength confirmed effectiveness of As removal from SALS by water leaching and Pb immobilization in cement matrix containing 20% of SALS.

AB - This paper describes two stages process for synthesis of WS2 powder on selected temperatures by using WO3 as a precursor. WO3 submicron particles were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of ammonium meta-tungstate (AMT) at 650°C in the air. WS2 particles were obtained by
sulfurization of the WO3 particles in presence of additive K2CO3 in a nitrogen atmosphere, first at
lower temperature (200°C) and followed by reduction at higher temperature (900°C). HSC Chemistry software package 9.0 is used for the analysis of chemistry and thermodynamic
parameters of the processes for synthesis of WS2 powder. The samples of WO3 and WS2 powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The morphology and composition
of these samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy
dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX).

AB - This paper presents an experimentally-proved hydrometallurgical process for selective metals recovery from the waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) using a combination of conventional and time-saving methods: leaching, cementation, precipitation, reduction and electrowinning. According to the results obtained in the laboratory tests, 92.4% Cu, 98.5% Pb, 96.8% Ag and over 99% Au could be selectively leached and recovered using mineral acids: sulfuric, nitric and aqua regia. Problematic tin recovery was addressed with comprehensive theoretical and experimental work, so 55.4% of Sn could be recovered through the novel physical method, which consists of two-step phase separation. Based on the results, an integral hydrometallurgical route for selective base and precious metals recovery though consecutive steps, (i) Cu, (ii) Sn, (iii) Pb and Ag, and (iv) Au, was developed. The route was tested at scaled-up laboratory level, confirming feasibility of the process and efficiencies of metals recovery. According to the obtained results, the proposed hydrometallurgical route represents an innovative and promising method for selective metals recovery from WPCBs, particularly applicable in small scale hydrometallurgical environments, focused on medium and high grade WPCBs recycling.

AB - Jarosite and neutral leaching residue (NLR) are the greatest environmental problems of hydrometallurgical zinc production due to their high quantity and hazardous content. Pyrometallurgical processes, such as the Waelz process, could be applied to recover valuable metals present in this waste. The paper investigates the possibility of forming environmentally stable Waelz slag after the Waelz process of jarosite and NLR. Waelz slag, obtained using CaO as a conventional alkaline additive in the Waelz process, showed high As and Sb release after the EN 12457-4 standard leaching test. Multiphase equilibrium composition calculations indicated that As and Sb were present as volatile and migratory species in the slag. In order to obtain Waelz slag with more stable matrices that would encapsulate and immobilize pollutants, MgO additions to CaO and different cooling conditions of the slag were further investigated. The efficiency of modification in additives composition and cooling conditions was assessed by EN 12457-4 leaching test and chemical and microstructural characterization (XRF and SEM-EDS analyses) of the Waelz slags. The results show that addition of MgO does not reduce the efficiency of the process, even more it increases leaching resistance of the slags. Concentrations of all investigated metals (As, Ba, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sb, Zn) after the leaching test were below defined limits for non-hazardous waste. Microstructural analyses revealed that MgO remained inert during Waelz process, and thus favoring the formation of amorphous stable structure, which was enhanced by increased cooling rate. All investigated Waelz slags with MgO additions are suitable for further use or safe disposal.

AB - Technology advances have resulted in a growing demand for the new tribology materials. In development of the properties of tribology materials, improvements can be achieved by combining materials in form of composites. The aim of this work was production of solid lubricants composites based on sulfides of technology metals. Selected solid lubricant powders, tin sulfide (Snx Sy) and tungsten disulfide (WS2), were synthesized by pyrometallurgical method in rotary tilting tube furnace (ST-1200RGV). The chemical thermodynamic parameters of the synthesis were determined using HSC Chemistry software modeling package. Characterization of the obtained powders included analysis of chemical composition by optical emission spectroscopy, phase composition identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microstructural examination by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Finally, the tribological properties of the as-synthesized powders in composite mixture were estimated. It has been shown the beneficial synergistic effect due to unique combination of properties between tin sulfides and tungsten sulfide in composite. In addition, advantage of synergistic tribology material (SnxSy /WS2) is simple method of synthesis and environmentally acceptable components of the composite

AB - Wide application of hard metals requires increased consumption of their constituents. Their high cost and scarcity impose the need for finding new, both ecologically and economically justified ways for their production. In presented research, on the basis of previous research, a review of an integrated technological procedure of recycling and valorization of useful components from hard metals secondary raw materials is given. Integrated procedure for processing of hard metal's waste enables the preparation of a wide range of powders with required properties, a high efficiency and reducing the duration of individual stages of procedures for their processing. Therefore, besides conservation of natural resources there are also significant economic and energetic benefits. The developed technological procedure is in service of sustainable development.

AB - The aim of this study was comparative analysis of catalysts with 5 and 20 wt.% Ni loading, with and without Pd additive, and it included: determination of reduction degrees, investigation on microstructure by scanning electron microscopy and chemical analysis by energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Ni/Al2O3 and Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts supported on alpha-Al2O3-based foams were synthesized by aerosol assisted impregnation. Impregnation of the foams by ultrasonically aerosolized chlorides was followed by drying at 473 K and hydrogen reduction at 533 and 633 K. Lower Ni loading resulted in higher reduction degrees. Ni loading of 20 wt.% enabled relatively uniform coverage of the foam with a metallic coating. Nearly complete reduction was achieved at both temperatures with activity modifier (Pd). Reduction degrees reached 99.4 and 98.2 wt.% at 533 K for 5 and 20 wt.% of Ni, respectively.

AB - Catalysts based on the Ni/Al2O3 system are used in a variety of catalytic processes. Catalysts are commonly synthesized through thermochemical routes (impregnation, precipitation, coprecipitation and others). The authors prepared a Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst supported by a ceramic foam, using a novel method, whereby the foam was impregnated with aerosol. This paper evaluates the synthesis methods for the experimentally obtained Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst in comparison with other Ni-based catalysts, using three multi-criteria analysis methods (SAW, TOPSIS and PROMETHEE II). The synthesis methods for Ni-based catalysts were compared with respect to the following parameters: preparation method, addition of the precipitation agent during preparation, forming and mixing precursors, filtration, drying procedure, calcination, reduction, and the presence of NiAl2O4. The final results indicate that the synthesis method for the Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst is the best ranked in comparison with the others.

abstract = "Catalysts based on the Ni/Al2O3 system are used in a variety of catalytic processes. The final results indicate that the synthesis method for the Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst is the best ranked in comparison with the others.",

AB - Based on the analysis of the non-standard iron-bearing raw materials treatment process and the results of real composition measurements of the flue gas, the study of hazards by identification of harmful substances that occur in the accident, as well as the modeling of the system of protection against air-pollution due to the cancellation of work the bag filter was carried out. Applying the model (Aloha software package) provides an overview of possible developments of events and zones of propagation of the precipitated particulate matter through the share of cadmium (Cd) in them. In the case of malfunction of filter system, emissions of particulate matter enormously exceed the permitted values. In the conditions of the simulated accident, particle velocity of flue gases was amounted E approximate to 738 mg/s or 2657 g/h of dust. The propagation of the precipitated particulate matter in the lower layer of the atmosphere, downwind, given trough the share of Cd in them, is 100 m from the source of pollution for the characteristic density of 5. g/m(2).day and 140m for the characteristic density of 2. g/m(2). day, in the stable state of the atmosphere, i.e. 870 m and 1100 m, respectively, in the neutral state of the atmosphere.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine utilization properties of Ni-Pd/Al2O3
catalyst supported on α-Al2O3 based foam in the dry methane reforming. The
catalyst was synthesized by using aerosol route. Non-calcined chloride precursors
for Ni and Pd were reduced by hydrogen at very low temperature of 533 K. The
reforming test was carried out for 3 h. Standing time was set to 1 h for each of the
following temperatures: 873, 973 and 1023 K. Yields of CO and H2 were
determined and conclusions on selectivity, catalytic activity and stability were made
on the basis of obtained results.

AB - The objects of this investigation were the comparative kinetic analysis of the NiO and NiCl2 reduction by hydrogen during an induction period and elimination of the calcination during the synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. The effect of temperature and time on NiO and NiCl2 reduction degrees was studied. Avrami I equation was selected as the most favorable kinetic model and used to determine activation energy of the NiO and NiCl2 reduction for the investigated temperature range (623-923 K) and time intervals (1-5 minutes). The investigation enabled reaching conclusions about the reaction ability and rate of the reduction processes. Afterward, Ni/Al2O3 catalysts were obtained by using oxide and chloride precursor for Ni. The catalysts were supported on alumina-based foam and prepared via aerosol route. Properties of the samples before and after low-temperature hydrogen reduction (633 K) were compared. Obtained results indicated that the synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 catalysts can be more efficient if chloride precursor for Ni is directly reduced by hydrogen during the synthesis process, without the calcination step. In addition, Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with different metal content were prepared by using chloride precursors. Lower reduction temperature was utilized and the chlorides were almost completely reduced at 533 K. © 2015 Miroslav Sokić et al.
