AB - Magnetic anisotropy in pentagonal bipyramidal complexes of Co(II) (1 and 2), Fe(III) (3 and 4), and Ni(II) (5) with a 2,2′-[2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)]bis[N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium] equatorial ligand and isothiocyanato axial ligands has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, ab initio, and ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) calculations. The studied complexes display three distinct types of magnetic anisotropy. Co(II) complexes (1 and 2) show an easy plane anisotropy with large and positive D values and negligible rhombicity. The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.

AB - A tridentate NNO condensation product of 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde and Girard's T reagent (HLC1) in the presence of azide ions coordinates with cobalt(II) giving mononuclear azido Co(II) complex [CoHL (N-3)(3)](1) as a main product and dinuclear end-on azido bridged Co(II) complex [Co2L2(mu-(1,1)-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (2) in traces. Crystal structures of both complexes were determined. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurement studies of complex I showed that Co(II) cation is in the low-spin state with t(2g)(6)e(g)(1) (S = 1/2) configuration. DFT-BS calculations for complex 2 anticipated ferromagnetic type interaction between paramagnetic centers (J = 53 cm(-1)). (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are of immense interest for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in medicine. Design and development of new iron oxide-based MNPs for such applications is of rather limited breadth without reliable and sensitive methods to determine their levels in body tissues. Commonly used methods, such as ICP, are quite problematic, due to the inability to decipher the origin of the detected iron, i.e. whether it originates from the MNPs or endogenous from tissues and bodily fluids. One of the approaches to overcome this problem and to increase reliability of tracing MNPs is to partially substitute iron ions in the MNPs with Er. Here, we report on the development of citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 nanopartides and characterization of their physico-chemical and biological properties by utilization of various complementary approaches. The synthesized MNPs had a narrow (6-7 nm) size distribution, as consistently seen in atomic pair distribution function, transmission electron microscopy, and DC magnetization measurements. The particles were found to be superparamagnetic, with a pronounced maximum in measured zero-field cooled magnetization at around 90 K. Reduction in saturation magnetization due to incorporation of 1.7% Er3+ into the Fe3O4 matrix was clearly observed. From the biological standpoint, citric acid coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 NPs were found to induce low toxicity both in human cell fibroblasts and in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Biodistribution pattern of the MNPs after intravenous administration in healthy Wistar rats was followed by the radiotracer method, revealing that Y-90-labeled MNPs were predominantly found in liver (7533% ID), followed by lungs (16.70% ID) and spleen (2.83% ID). Quantitative agreement with these observations was obtained by ICP-MS elemental analysis using Er as the detected tracer. Based on the favorable physical, chemical and biological characteristics, citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 MNPs could be further considered for the potential application as a diagnostic and/or therapeutic agent. This work also demonstrates that combined application of these techniques is a promising tool for studies of pharmacokinetics of the new MNPs in complex biological systems.

AB - Octahedral and square-planar isothiocyanato complexes of Ni(II) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and Girard's T reagent were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Results of magnetic measurements for octahedral Ni(II) complex were also reported. In all the complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms while the remaining coordination positions are occupied with thiocyanato anions. Coordination of deprotonated phosphine ligand results in formation of square-planar complexes, while the octahedral complex was formed with protonated ligand. Reaction energetics with both forms of ligand were studied by the means of DFT and results were in complete agreement with experimental observations. Furthermore, ligand field splitting analysis gave the deeper insight in the relationship of the isolated complex coordination environment and protonation of the ligand.

(C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - 3-Acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone hydrochloride was synthesized and structurally characterized. Complexes of Cu(II) with this ligand could not be obtained by direct synthesis. By synthesis in situ mixing Cu(BF4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, 3-acetylpyridine (3-Acpy) and semicarbazide, a Cu(I) polymer, {[Cu(SCN)(3-Acpy)(2)]}(n) was obtained and structurally characterized. Reaction of Cu(BF4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, 3-acetylpyridine and ammonium thiocyanate afforded a dinuclear Cu(II) complex with two thiocyanate ions in bridges, which was structurally characterized. Magnetic measurements were performed for the dinuclear complex. OFT calculations provided explanation for inability to obtain a mononuclear complex. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The structures of the Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solid state were determined by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray analysis. The structure of Pd(II) complex in solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Results of magnetic measurements for Fe(III) complex were reported. In both complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. Results of antimicrobial activity investigation indicate that the activity of the ligand is enhanced upon complexation, and that the MIC values of the iron complex to some bacterial strains are not much higher than those of cefotaxime. AB - Magnetic nanocomposites can show enhanced properties compared to their single phase counterparts. Novel soft ferrite Fe3O4/soft ferrite MnFe2O4 nanocomposite, as well as pure MnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 for the sake of comparison, were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The spinel type of structure (space group Fd (3) over barm) of the samples was confirmed by XRPD and SAED. Samples are composed of spherical particles with size in the range 5-15 nm. Nanocomposite (92 wt%) MnFe2O4/(8 wt%) Fe3O4 exert single phase like magnetic behavior. Saturation magnetization (M-S) of Fe3O4/MnFe2O4 is 26% greater than M-S of MnFe2O4 and even 50% than M-S of Fe3O4. At the same time coercivity field of the nanocomposite is twice less value (H-C=180 Oe) than in binary ferrites (H-C=360 Oe). Magnetization enhancement and softening in Magnetite/Mn-ferrite is discussed related to particle interactions among two different ferrites and intrinsic properties of nanoparticles. Tailoring phase ratio and synthesis conditions can be a tool for tuning magnetic properties of nanocomposites. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - A new malonic dihydrazide-based ligand, N',N'(2)-bis[(1E)-1-(2-quinolyl)methylene]propanedihydrazide (H(2)L3), has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, C-13 NMR, and H-1 NMR spectroscopies. In the reaction of H(2)L3 with Ni(II) a binuclear complex has been obtained. The structure of the complex was established by X-ray analysis. Each Ni(II) is coordinated with two NNO donor sets from two ligand molecules in dianionic form (L3(2-)) forming an octahedral geometry. Multiple intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi (chelate ring) interactions support the molecular geometry of the [Ni-2(L3)(2)] complex. The structure of [Ni-2(L3)(2)] is compared with those of analogous Ni(II) complexes with pyridine dihydrazone type ligands. Magnetic behavior of the dinuclear complex was studied in temperature range of 2-300 K.

AB - Three novel copper(II) complexes as condensation derivatives of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, 2-acetylpyridine or 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde with ethyl hydrazinoacetate hydrochloride were synthesized. X-ray crystal structures of all three complexes were determined. Crystallographic data indicate a common basis of the structures with some major differences. Both pyridine derivatives form complexes of the type [CuCl2L] with distorted square-planar geometry around copper(II), but show a decisive difference in the side chain orientation. The quinoline derivative forms a dimeric complex of type [Cu2Cl4L2] with distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around copper(II), but a rather short Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu contact, which is reflected in its magnetic properties. All three complexes showed antibacterial activity. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Applying a new synthesis route based on the thermal decomposition of a mixture acetylacetonato complexes, Li(AA), La(AA)(3) and Fe(AA)(3), Li, La ferrite (Li0.5La0.08Fe2.42O4) was formed. The element analysis performed by ICP technique and the Rietveld refinement data indicate that the sample is composed of three phases: Li0.5La0.008Fe2.42O4 (69%, SG P4(3)32, a = 8.3445(3) angstrom), La0.14Fe3O4 (16%, SG Fd (3) over barm, a = 8.403(1) angstrom) and LiFeO2 (15%, SG Fm (3) over barm, a = 4.2291(8) angstrom). A partial substitution Fe3+ - gt La3+ in Li ferrite and La insertion at 16c site in Fe3O4 occur at low concentrations. A partial cation ordering at 4b and 12d octahedral sites in Li0.5La0.08Fe2.42O4 was noticed. TEM micrograph shows that the nanoparticles are spherically shaped and that the particle distribution is in the range between 7 and 33 nm. The sample exhibits superparamagnetic behavior, thus the composite has potential industrial applications. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - New synthesis routine based on thermal decomposition of an erbium complex with acetylacetonato ligand (2, 4-pentadione) was used to prepare nanosized Er2O3 with a particle size of 5 nm and a narrow size distribution. For the sake of comparison, the ultrafine-Er2O3 powder was prepared by precipitation and subsequent sintering. The magnetic susceptibility of nanosized Er2O3 indicates the antiferromagnetic lt - gt paramagnetic transition at 1.8 K or lower, while in ultrafine such as in a bulk counterpart the transition was observed at noticeably higher temperature of similar to 3.4 K. The decrease in Neel temperature, observed in the case of nanosized Er2O3 sample, was attributed to both particle surface and core effects. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
