AB - Using the microwave-hydrothermal method for the synthesis of composite, high surface density of hydroxyl groups, as an active adsorption sites for arsenic, was obtained. Adsorption mechanisms of As(III) and As(V) onto zirconium-doped titanium dioxide (Zr-TiO2) were investigated and proposed using macroscopic and microscopic methods. Obtained results are suggesting inner-sphere and outer-sphere adsorption mechanisms for As(III) and As(V), respectively. This allowed us to identify parameters that are critical for the successful removal of arsenic from water, which is essential information for further optimization of the removal process. The composite was further applied for the removal of As(III) and As(V) from water in a dynamic flow through the reactor. Column study proved that the removal of both arsenic species below the value recommended by WHO can be achieved. Elution of As(III) and As(V) from the composite can be done by using small amounts of 0.01M NaOH solution resulting in preconcentration of arsenic species and possible multiple usage of composite.

AB - A simple and fast method for determination of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TDZ), at the boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) was proposed. Oxidation peaks on potentials higher than 1 V were used for quantitation of investigated phenothiazines due to better selectivity over common interfering compounds in urine. Differential pulse voltammetry was applied for trace determination of CPZ and TDZ, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at optimal pH. Under optimized DPV conditions a linear analytical curve was obtained from 1.0x10(-7) to 4.0x10(-5) M with a detection limit of 0.3x10(-7) M (for CPZ) and in the concentration range of 2x10(-7) M to 4.0x10(-5) M, with a detection limit of 1.2x10(-7)M (for TDZ). The applicability of the method was proved by determination of CPZ and TDZ by proposed procedures in spiked urine samples. The electrochemical behavior of those two important tranquilizers in different solvents was described, exploring the possibility of simultaneous determination.

AB - Pyridoxine (vitamin B-6, VB6) was detected in pharmaceutical preparation and human urine samples by employing differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at unmodified boron doped electrode. In Britton-Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) at pH 6, VB6 provides well defined oxidation peak at around +1.05 V vs. Ag/AgCl (3 M KCl). The influence of most of the interferents present in real samples, supporting electrolyte and DPV parameters was investigated. A VB6 sensor with and linear range from 7 to 47 and a detection limit of 3.76 was obtain after optimization. Repeatability of the proposed procedure calculated after 7 measurements of 9 and 30 mu M of VB6 was 3.6 and 2.4%, respectively. Proposed methodology was successfully applied for the determination of VB6 in real samples, and from obtained results, it can be concluded that proposed analytical procedure can be an inexpensive alternative to the widely used separation methods. Prime Novelty statement: This work presents the quantification of vitamin B-6, using differential pulse voltammetry, with boron-doped diamond electrode. BDD electrode is, up to date, one of the best electrode materials, with extremely low background current and negligible passivation. The aim of this study was to develop method for vitamin B-6 determination in various matrices, as can be seen from the results, the obtained procedure shows good recovery values in tested samples and could be a satisfactory replacement to the separation methods and modified electrodes. AB - In this paper, we present electrochemical behavior and determination of riboflavin in pharmaceutical tablets by square wave voltammetry using unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode. In Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2, by employing cyclic voltammetry it is demonstrated that riboflavin undergoes a diffusion-controlled quasi-reversible electron transfer reaction. The experimental parameters, such as pH of the supporting electrolyte, square wave voltammetry parameters, influence of most common interferences, were examined. Under optimized experimental conditions in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2, linear calibration curves were obtained in the wide range from 0.02 to 35 A mu M, with the capability of detection of 0.0037 A mu M. Repeatability of ten measurements was calculated at four concentrations from linear range and all values were lt 1.8 %. Proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of the total vitamin content in pharmaceutical preparations and urine samples. The developed approach could be beneficial for the quantification of vitamin in drugs using boron-doped diamond electrode as up-to-date electrochemical sensor and could represent inexpensive analytical alternative to separation methods.

AB - This paper presents, for the first time, electrochemical behavior of diterpene lactone andrographolide and its voltammetric determination using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at boron-doped diamond electrode, in human urine and oil extract from Andrographis paniculata seeds. Andrographolide, due to its chemical structure, provides well defined peak at +1.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode (3 M) in Britton-Robinson buffer solution pH 12. The proposed method, under optimum experimental parameters displays excellent selectivity towards andrographolide in the presence of some interference, as ascorbic acid, uric acid and dopamine, with detection limit of 0.75 mu M. Calibration curves were found to be linear in the range from 2 to 40 mu M, with two linear ranges, first from 2 to 10 mu M and second from 10 to 40 mu M with corresponding equations I (mu A) = (4.00 +/- 0.12) c (mu M) + (13.42 +/- 0.66) (R-2 = 0.9975) and I (mu A) = (0.87 +/- 0.05) c (mu M) + (46.33 +/- 1.53) (R-2 = 0.9767), respectively. Relative standard deviation of 7 measurements was 4% which verified excellent repeatability of proposed method and this method was successfully applied for the determination of andrographolide in human urine sample and extract from the A. paniculata seeds. The Prussian blue method was used for validation of the proposed elactroanalytical method. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this study we proposed electrochemical behavior and determination of baicalein, main active flavonoid from Scutellaria baicalensis, using boron doped diamond electrode. In Britton-Robinson buffer solution, pH 2, baicalein provides two single oval shape oxidation peaks at +0.5 V/Ag-AgCl and a second one at +0.8 V/Ag-AgCl. For quantification of baicalein square wave voltammetry was used. Under optimized parameters calibration curve was linear over the range 1-95 mu M with detection limit of 0.26 mu M. After eight successful measurements repeatability was 3.7%. Proposed method was applied for determination of baicalein in real samples with excellent recovery. The influence of the most common interferences, biomolecules presented in urine was investigated. The developed approach could be beneficial in analysis of widely used flavonoid in biological samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A simple and efficient procedure is described for electrochemical determination of trifluoperazine (TFP), a prominent compound in a large group of phenothiazine derivatives with potent physiological activity. This method is based on the electrochemical oxidation of TFP in Britton-Robinson buffer solution in pH 6 at a boron-doped diamond electrode. Cyclic voltammetry provided a four well defined oxidation peaks at + 0.65, + 0.83, + 1.06 and + 1.35 V (vs. Ag/AgCl/3 M KCl electrode). Differential pulse voltammetry was applied as a very sensitive analytical technique for the determination of micromolar amounts of TFP. Two oxidation peaks on higher potentials were chosen for quantification of TFP. Under optimized conditions, the analytical curves obtained were linear in the TFP concentration range of 1.0 to 37.0 mmol L-1, with a detection limit of 0.7 and 0.6 mmol L-1, respectively. The effect of interfering agents (common urinary compounds) appeared to be negligible confirming the favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by determination of trifluoperazine content in model human urine samples with good accuracy (recoveries varied from 97% to 104%). The developed approach could be beneficial in analysis of TFP in biological samples using a boron-doped diamond electrode as an up-to-date electrochemical sensor and could represent an inexpensive analytical alternative to separation methods.
