AB - Samples of various ecochemical types of soil were collected in the region of the future accumulation of Lake Bogovina (Serbia). They were analyzed for ten elements using AAS, GFAAS and ICP. Investigation of the nature of association of heavy metals and identification of their substrates was provided by sequential extraction in five steps by successive extraction of soil samples with different mediums. Besides the acid soluble residual phase, most microelements were extracted in the easily and moderate reducible phases. Correlation between manganese and iron from the second and third phase with trace metals from non-residual phases was provided in order to determine their bioavailability. Besides principal component and cluster analysis, the enrichment factors were provided in order to check the impact of anthropogenic factors on trace elements. Most samples contained trace elements mainly from crustal origin with the exception of cadmium.

AB - Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) with internal standardization was applied for the analysis of an in-house reference platinum alloy containing palladium and rhodium (approximately 5% by weight). In order to compensate for variations in signal recovery due to matrix interferences, and therefore to improve the precision, platinum, the major component, was chosen as an internal standard. Quantitative analysis was based on calibration using a set of matrix-matched calibration standards with and without employing the internal standard. These results were compared with those obtained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The results for both techniques were in a good agreement, although the precision was slightly better in the ICP-AES technique, with or without the internal standard.

AB - The "1st South-Eastern European Interlaboratory Study WATER ANALYSIS-2003" was organized in the period of November 2003 to February 2004, on the basis of European and international experiences. The total of 38 laboratories took part in "WATER ANALYSIS-2003". Three laboratories were from Greece, one from the Republic of Srpska - Bosnia and Hercegovina, eight from Romania and all others from Serbia and Montenegro. The task for participants was to determine some or all trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb and Zn) in two samples prepared from filtered water of the river Danube near Belgrade. Participants could freely select the analytical methods. Results obtained for the determination of lead and cadmium were presented in this paper. All results were analysed using the same methods as in the interlaboratory studies organized by IRMM-JRC (Institute for Reference Materials. and Measurements: EU-Joint Research Centre, Geel, Belgium) within IMEP (International Measurements Evaluation Programme). Reproducibility (R) and repeatability (r) were calculated according to the British standard BS 5497: Part 1: 1987 (ISO 5725: 1986). The interlaboratory study was successful and most of laboratories obtained good results. Their achievement was better than in some earlier interlaboratory studies.

AB - The kinetics of the iodide-catalyzed Mn(III) metaphosphate-As(III) reaction was studied in the presence of orthophosphoric acid. The reaction rate was followed spectrophotometrically at 516 nm. It was established that orthophosphoric acid increased the reaction rate and that the extent of the non-catalytic reaction was extremely small. A kinetic equation was postulated and the apparent rate constant calculated. The dependence of the reaction rate on temperature was investigated and the energy of activation and other kinetic parameters determined. Iodide was determined under the optimal experimental conditions in the range 0.6-2.5 ng.mL(-1) with a relative standard deviation of up to 6.7% and a detection limit of 0.12 ng mL(-1). The effect of foreign ions on the accuracy of the determinations was also investigated.

AB - The determination of bilirubin in gallstones is carried out by means of several methods, but most frequently by spectrophotometric determination of azobilirubin. We found that most of the methods were not applicable to bilirubin determination in certain types of gallstones. Thus, we developed a simple and suitable method for bilirubin determination applicable to all gallstone specimens. Based on direct spectrophotometric measurements of chloroform solution of bilirubin or gallstone extracts, our method was found to be sensitive enough to determine small amounts as well as high contents of bilirubin in gallstones. Other gallstone components were of no influence on the assay; thus this method proved to be superior to azobilirubin or other assays. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.
