Effect of sample preparation procedure on standardless wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis of plant samples

AB  - XRF (X-ray fluorescence analysis) has been applied as the method for analysis of plant samples, but not in its full potential. This method would be highly suitable for monitoring programs and screening studies. A simple sample preparation procedure makes this technique time and cost-effective, although the absence of adequate calibration standards for some analyzed matrices can be a significant limiting factor. Nevertheless, this obstacle can be overcome by the development of the so-called “standardless method” approach. It is important to explore the possibilities and limitations of such method applied to an analysis of plant materials. The accuracy of XRF analysis is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the sample, which can be significantly affected by the sample preparation procedure. Variations of 3 crucial sample preparation parameters: the mass of the samples (from 1 to 5 g), binder ratio (from 0 to 25% of wax), and pressing pressure (from 10 to 25 t) were tested on needles obtained from two widespread conifer species: Pinus nigra and Abies alba. For most elements, the correlation between the concentration and the change of the binder ratio was statistically significant, while there was no statistically significant correlation between the concentration and the change of the pellet mass and applied pressure. For both types of needles, an estimated systematic error was always higher than a random error. The difference between two types of errors has been higher among samples with different wax content than in samples with different pellet mass, while the variation of applied pressure did not introduce any significant systematic error. On average the change of wax content inflated the value of systematic error by 18 and 13% for the pine and fir needle samples (respectively), while the change of the sample mass has introduced systematic error in lesser extent, on average it was 11% for pine needles and 10% for fir needle samples. The change of pelletizing pressure affected the results by only 3.9% for both conifer needles.

Tested methods can be very precise, with good intralaboratory reproducibility over wide linear range.

AB  - Honeybee colony losses have been a focus of research in the last years, due to the importance of managed honeybee colonies for economy and ecology. Different unfavorable conditions from the outside environment have a strong impact on the hive health. The majority of losses occur mainly during winter and the exact reason is not completely understood. Only a small number of studies are dealing with content of bioelements, their function and influence on honeybee physiology. The aim of the present study was to determine seasonal and spatial variations in content of bioelements and non-essential elements, in hemolymph and whole body of honeybees originating from three regions with different degrees of urbanization and industrialization. Concentrations of 16 elements were compared: macroelements (Ca, K, Mg, Na), microelements (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) and non-essential elements (Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Sr) in samples collected from 3 different environments: Golija (rural region), Belgrade (urban region) and Zajača (industrial region). Content of bioelements and non-essential elements in honeybees was under noticeable influence of the surrounding environment, season and degree of honeybee activity. Hemolymph was proven to be helpful in differentiating air pollution from other sources of honeybee exposure. The results of our study demonstrated that bees can be successfully used as biomonitors since we have observed statistically significant differences among observed locations, but unless compared locations are exposed to excessively different pollution pressures, it is essential that all bees should be collected at the same season.

AB  - This research explores the possibilities and limitations of WD-XRF, applied as a method for quantification of 20 elements in plant material, using spiked cellulose standards for calibration. Three different analytical methods were investigated: 1) standards created from pure spiked cellulose; 2) spiked cellulose mixed with 20% of binder and 3) spiked cellulose applied as a thin layer on an inert carrier. Sensitivity, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, repeatability, intralaboratory reproducibility, and accuracy were determined and compared. The accuracy of the investigated methods was tested by analysis of standard reference materials and comparison with other routinely used analytical techniques (ICP-OES and ICP-MS). The comparison included real plant samples which were collected from the environment characterized by different pollution levels. The accuracy of the semiquantitative standardless method was also considered and compared with other investigated methods. Tested methods can be very precise, with good intralaboratory reproducibility over wide linear range.

AB  - A geochemical and mineralogical study was performed on lignite samples from the Upper Miocene Kovin deposit, hosting three coal seams. The Kovin lignite is characterized by high moisture content, medium to high ash yield, medium to high sulphur content and a relatively low gross and net calorific value. The mineralogical composition, and major and trace element contents were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The most abundant minerals in all lignite samples from the three coal seams are clays (illite/smectite), silicates (quartz, plagioclase), sulphates (gypsum/anhydrite) and carbonate (calcite). The other iron-rich minerals are sulphides, oxides and hydroxides (pyrite, mag-netite, haematite, and limonite). In general, mineral matter in the matrix coal consists of illite/ smectite and quartz, while xylite-rich coals, apart from illite/smectite, have a higher content of sulphates and Fe-oxide/hydroxide minerals. The lignite from the Kovin deposit is enriched in As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Gd, Tb, Er and Lu in comparison with the Clarke values for brown coals. The statistical analysis of bulk compositional data shows inorganic affinity for the majority of the major and trace elements and possible association with pyrite, illite/ smectite and calcite.

AB  - Over the past decades, the number of managed honey bee Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colonies have been decreasing. The majority of losses occur during winter, suggesting that overwintering honey bees are more susceptible to adverse factors. We focused on the oxidative status of overwintering honey bees, particularly at the beginning (November) and end (March) of the wintering period. Colonies from three locations with different anthropogenic influences were selected: Belgrade, an urban zone, Zajača, an industrial zone, and Susek, a rural area. We measured levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), as a marker of lipid peroxidation, as well as the expression and activity of select antioxidative enzymes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Our results show that enzyme activity and gene expression of antioxidative enzymes are influenced by both sample location and the time of sampling. The majority of analyzed genes had significantly reduced expression, at the end of the overwintering period when higher activities of antioxidative enzymes were also recorded. Among the analyzed parameters, SOD activity and gene expression of microsomal GST isoforms were more affected by local environmental conditions, suggesting the complex role of these enzymes in antioxidative defense and detoxification. The higher MDA levels observed at the end of overwintering for all three locations likely reflects accumulated oxidative damage which could be associated with the aging process, brood rearing and/or the onset flying activity.

With the use of multivariate statistical methods honeybees can also be used to distinguish the origin of this pollution. In this study the concentrations of Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Sr and Zn were measured in the bodies of adult honeybees collected from nine different apiaries in Serbia. With the help of the statistical methods it was established that the least polluted area was the one that has no industrial activities or the intense traffic nearby. The most polluted was the urban region, followed by a region close to thermal power plants and ash disposal site. Using PCA and CA the origin of the analyzed metals were proposed. It was suggested that Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni have anthropogenic origin mainly from the intensive agriculture, traffic and coal combustion.

AB  - With the increase in anthropogenic activities metal pollution is also increased and needs to be closely monitored. In this study honeybees were used as bioindicators to monitor metal pollution. Metal pollution in honeybees represents pollution present in air, water and soil. Concentrations of As, Cs, Hg, Mo, Sb, Se, U and V were measured. The aim of this study was to assess spatial and temporal variations of metal concentrations in honeybees. Samples of honeybees were taken at five different regions in Serbia (Belgrade - BG, Pancevo - PA, Pavlis - PV, Mesic - MS, and Kostolac - TPP) during 2014. Spatial variations were observed for Sb, which had higher concentrations in BG compared to all other regions, and for U, with higher concentrations in the TPP region. High concentrations of Sb in BG were attributed to intense traffic, while higher U concentrations in the TPP region are due to the vicinity of coal fired power plants. In order to assess temporal variations at two locations (PA and PV) samples were taken during July and September of 2014 and June, July, August and September of 2015. During 2014 observing months of sampling higher concentrations in July were detected for Sb and U in BG, which is attributed to lifecycle of plants and honeybees. During the same year higher concentrations in September were observed for As, Sb in PA and Hg in PV. This is due to high precipitation during the peak of bee activity in spring/summer of 2014. No differences between months of sampling were detected during 2015. Between 2014 and 2015 statistically significant differences were observed for Hg, Mo and V; all elements had higher concentrations in 2014. This is in accordance with the trend of reduction of metal concentrations in the bodies of honeybees throughout the years in this region.

AB  - In this study, honeybees were used to determine spatio-temporal variations and origin sources of Pb. Lead concentrations and isotopic composition were used in combination with selected statistical methods. The sampling was carried out at five different locations in Serbia: urban region (BG), petrochemical industry (PA), suburban region (PV), rural region (MS) and thermal power plant region (TPP) during 2014. At PA and PV locations, samples were taken during multiple years. This is the first use of Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) in combination with honeybees as bioindicators to determine spatio-temporal variations and origin of Pb pollution. It was observed that during the years Pb concentrations were in decline. Anthropogenic sources are most dominant in BG and TPP, in PA there are mixed sources of natural and anthropogenic origin and in PV Pb is of natural origin. It can be concluded that honeybees in combination with SOM can be used to differentiate between slight changes in spatio-temporal variations of Pb, as well as for source appointment. The aims of this study were to determine concentrations of Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Ni, Sr, and Zn in the bodies of honeybees during July and September of 2013, 2014, and 2015 and to analyze their spatial and temporal variations and sources of analyzed elements, as well as to assess pollution levels in the two cities. Significant temporal differences were found for Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Ni, and Zn. Trend of reduction in metal concentrations in bodies of honeybees during the years was observed. Statistically significant spatial variations were observed for Al, Ba, and Sr, with higher concentrations in VS. PCA and CA analyses were used for the first time to assess sources of metals found in honeybees. These analyses showed two sources of metals. Co, Cd, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, and partly Cu were contributed to anthropogenic sources, while Ca, Al, Mg, Cr, Ba, Sr, and Ni were contributed to natural sources.

AB  - One of the useful properties of probiotic bacteria is their capacity to bind different targets, thus eliminating them through feces. It is supposed that one of these targets could be cadmium, a widespread environmental toxicant that causes various disturbances in biological systems. This study examined the protective effects of probiotic supplementation against cadmium-induced toxicity in the rat. The experiment was conducted in the course of 5 weeks. Animals were divided into four groups: (1) controls, (2) probiotics treated, (3) cadmium treated, and (4) probiotics + cadmium treated. The cadmium concentration was measured in the blood, liver, kidney, and feces, as well as the blood alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as biomarkers of the liver function. Histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney were also determined. Our results revealed that probiotics combined with cadmium increase this metal concentration in feces. As a result, blood, liver, and kidney Cd levels, as well as blood ALT and AST activities were lessened compared to the rat group treated with cadmium only. Besides, probiotics consumed simultaneously with cadmium attenuated histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney caused by cadmium. The rise in lactobacilli number in feces of rats treated simultaneously with cadmium and probiotics results in strong correlation with the increase of Cd concentration in their feces and the decrease of Cd concentration in their blood. We speculate that probiotics actively contribute to cadmium excretion through feces, probably, by its binding to their bacterial cell wall.

The cadmium concentration was measured in the blood, liver, kidney, and feces, as well as the blood alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as biomarkers of the liver function. Histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney were also determined. Our results revealed that probiotics combined with cadmium increase this metal concentration in feces. As a result, blood, liver, and kidney Cd levels, as well as blood ALT and AST activities were lessened compared to the rat group treated with cadmium only. Besides, probiotics consumed simultaneously with cadmium attenuated histomorphological changes in the liver and kidney caused by cadmium. The rise in lactobacilli number in feces of rats treated simultaneously with cadmium and probiotics results in strong correlation with the increase of Cd concentration in their feces and the decrease of Cd concentration in their blood. We speculate that probiotics actively contribute to cadmium excretion through feces, probably, by its binding to their bacterial cell wall.",

Aim of this study was to investigate the capability of bees as bioindicators to detect different concentrations of metals in foraging regions, during two sampling periods, and to compare concentrations of Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn found in their bodies. Significant differences were detected for Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni between at least two analyzed regions. Significant differences in concentrations between sampling dates were found for Al, Ba, Co, Cr and Fe in at least one of the locations. For Cd, Mn, Na, Pb, Sr and Zn, no significant differences were found between locations or sampling dates, suggesting equal and stable levels of concentration for these elements in the environment.

AB  - X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is known as excellent nondestructive technique for analysis of artifacts, in our case, medieval numismatic coins. Collections of 30 silver coins, owned by National Museum in Belgrade, were investigated during our research. Coins from the historical period from 1389 to 1458 belong to the reign of two Serbian rulers, Stefan Lazarevic and Durde Brankovic The aim of this study was to determine elemental composition of silver coins and to characterize alloys from which the coins were minted. The dominant elements detected in all coins were Ag, Cu, Zn and Pb. In some coins Fe, Si and S were detected as well. Results from quantitative analysis shows that the content of Ag in all investigated silver coins exceed 90%, except in two coins that were assumed to be forged. The concentration of Cu ranged from 3% to 5%, and the contents of Zn and Pb varied around 1%. AB  - Institucije poput Republičkog hidrometeorološkog zavoda Srbije sprovode višedecenijske programe monitoringa ključnih ekohemijskih parametara, u okviru kojih su nastale baze podataka sa ogromnim brojem merenja. Ova disertacija obrađuje bazu podataka koja je proizvod monitoringa reka Srbije u periodu od 1992. do 2006. godine.Cilj rada je bio da se u okviru prikupljenih podataka ispita da li postoje vremenski i prostorni trendovi, a da se potom detektovani trendovi kvantifikuju. U okviru vremenskih trendova posebno su istraživane sezonske oscilacije posmatranih ekohemijskih parametara. Ispitivane su međusobne relacije njihovih vremenskih i prostornih promena. Centralno mesto u istraživanju zauzima Dunav, zato što je u pitanju važna internacionalna reka, pri čemu skoro celokupna teritorija Republike Srbije pripada njegovom slivu. Stoga je bitno naći odgovor na pitanje da li se ekohemijski status Dunava pogoršava, poboljšava ili stagnira nakon proticanja kroz Srbiju. Takođe je bilo interesantno utvrditi kako na Dunav utiču pritoke čije se ušće nalazi na teritoriji Srbije. Sava, Tisa i Velika Morava se izdvajaju od ostalih pritoka po tome što je Sava najveća pritoka, Tisa je najduža, a Velika Morava je najveća reka Srbije. Pored uticaja pritoka ispitivan je i uticaj ostalih velikih izvora zagađenja poput grada Beograda i potencijal Dunava za samoprečišćavanje.Obrada rezultata se nije zaustavila samo na empirijskom pristupu, koji se isključivo oslanja na iskustvo i subjektivne procene istraživača. Da bi se dobile objektivne procene i izveli zaključci visoke pouzdanosti, bilo je neophodno sastaviti i primeniti odgovarajuću statističku proceduru. AB  - Institutions such as Republic Hydrometerogical Service conduct during many decades monitoring programs of crucial eco-chemical parameters. They have produced data bases with huge amounts of measurements. This dissertation is based on data base which originated from the monitoring of Serbian rivers in the period which spans from years 1992 to 2006.Goal of this dissertation was explore if collected data possess any temporal or spatial trends, and if so, to quantify them. Among temporal trends, special attention was paid to seasonal oscillations of analyzed eco-chemical parameters. Mutual relations of temporal and spatial changes between different eco-chemical parameters were explored. The Danube was in the center of this research because it is important international river. Almost whole of the Serbian territory belongs to its basin, therefore it was very important to find whether eco-chemical status of the river is decreased, increased of stagnates as the Danube flows through Serbia. Another interesting issue was to explore influence of the major tributaries whose mouth is located within Serbia. The Sava, the Tisa and The Velika Morava were chosen among other tributaries, because the Sava is the biggest tributary, the Tisa is the longest and the Velika Morava is the biggest Serbian tributary. Influence of the Belgrade city and other large pollution sources was explored, beside the influence of the tributaries. Self-purification potential of the Danube was also assessed.Data processing was not limited to the empirical approach which is highly dependent on the experience and subjectivity of the researcher. Statistical analysis of the influence of major tributaries to the eco-chemical status of the Danube River

AB  - We have assembled and assessed the statistical procedure which is capable to objectively explore influence of the Danube's major tributaries (the Rivers Tisa, Sava, and Velika Morava) to its eco-chemical status. Procedure contains several tests for measurement of central tendencies: one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), repeated measures ANOVA, and non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Various nuisance factors, (outliers, departures from normality, seasonality, and heteroscedasticity) which are present in large data bases, affect the objectivity of central tendency tests; therefore, it was important not only to estimate their robustness, but also to apply proper procedures for detection of the nuisance factors (Grubbs', generalized ESD-extreme Studentized deviate, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, turning point, Wald-Wolfowitz runs, Kendall rank, and Levene's tests) and to mitigate their influence (outlier exclusion, Box-Cox, and logarithmic transformations). The analysis of selected eco-chemical parameters: biological oxygen demand-5, chemical oxygen demand, UV extinction at 254 nm, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, suspended matter, total phosphorus, phosphates, nitrates, ammonia, pH, total alkalinity, m-2p alkalinity, CO2, and temperature, was performed for 15 years period. The Tisa was the most polluted tributary, but its pollution load was not substantial enough to exceed the Danube self-purification potential. The City of Belgrade was also identified as serious pollution source. Assessment of assembled statistical procedure, which was based on the real environmental data, indicates that proposed tests are sufficiently robust to the observed level of nuisance factors with the exception of pronounced seasonality.

AB  - Understanding the cellular stress response in honey bees will significantly contribute to their conservation. The aim of this study was to analyze the response of the antioxidative enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase in honey bees related to the presence of toxic metals in different habitats. Three locations were selected: (i) Tunovo on the mountain Golija, as control area, without industry and large human impact, (ii) Belgrade as urban area, and (iii) Zajaca, as mining and industrial zone. Our results showed that the concentrations of lead (Pb) in whole body of bees vary according to habitat, but there was very significant increase of Pb in bees from investigated industrial area. Bees from urban and industrial area had increased expression of both Sod1 and Cat genes, suggesting adaptation to increased oxidative stress. However, in spite increased gene expression, the enzyme activity of catalase was lower in bees from industrial area suggesting inhibitory effect of Pb on catalase. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

AB  - Ramonda nathaliae (Gesneriaceae) is a rare desiccation tolerant flowering plant species of the Northern Hemisphere. This, mainly calcicole, preglacial relict species is endemic in the Balkan Peninsula, where it has survived in its refugial habitats of gorges and mountain slopes. At present, only two localities within its narrow range are known where it thrives in hostile serpentine habitats, and the adverse serpentine environment is bound to present further challenge to the adaptive capacity of R. nathaliae. In general, the occurrence of a resurrection flowering plant on serpentine soil is exceptional and the soil-plant relation of R. nathaliae in those circumstances is described here for the first time. The aim of this study was (i) to analyze mineral elements composition in soil from both serpentine and limestone habitats of the species and to compare the way peculiarities of the substrates are reflected in roots and leaves of plants from the respective soils; (ii) to evaluate the effect of heavy metal overload on the habit of serpentine R. nathaliae individuals. Serpentine soil, characterized by high levels of phytotoxic heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Co, Mn), hosts plants showing elevated metal contents in their organs. Ramonda plants from serpentine populations are able to maintain balance of Ca to Mg favourable to Ca (2.0 in roots, 2.7 in leaves) despite a strongly unfavourable Ca/Mg ratio in the soil (0.09). The greatest difference in concentrations was observed for the Ni content in plant tissues: serpentine plants had 57 and 20 times more Ni in their roots and leaves than the plants from limestone. Aluminium was present in similar concentrations in both soils, and was highly accumulated in plant tissues of the plants from both substrates. Metal-specific metabolic activity is demonstrated in bioaccumulation indices of several essential minerals (Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn). A significantly higher metal content found in roots in relation to leaves might indicate the plant's ability to immobilize the metals within the root tissues. Mycorrhizal fungi colonize plant roots from both substrates and apparently are important in improving the supply of nutrients, but they could also take part in toxic metal immobilization. The price of adaptation to the hostile environment is evident in the habit of R. nathaliae plants growing on serpentine: reduced size of rosettes and leaves, as well as chlorotic and necrotic leaf tips and margins.

AB  - Seasonal spatial and temporal changes of selected eco-chemical parameters in section of the Danube River flowing through Serbia were analyzed. Data for electrical conductivity (EC), dry and suspended matter, residue on ignition, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD-5), ultraviolet extinction, dissolved oxygen (DO), oxygen saturation, pH, nitrates, total phosphorus, and nitrogen were collected between 1992 and 2006. The use of monthly medians combined with linear regression and two-sided t test has been proven to be the best approach for resolving trends from natural variability of investigated parameters and for determining trend significance. Patterns of temporal changes between different months were examined. It was also determined that spatial trends of some parameters oscillate in predictable manner, increasing in one part of the year and declining in the other. Regression slope coefficients, an excellent indicator for determining when the water quality is changing the most along the course of the Danube, reach their maximum during summer for temperature (t), electric conductivity, nitrates, and total N, while in the same season suspended matter, COD, BOD-5, DO, and oxygen saturation coefficients reach their minimum. Correlations for used data sets of selected parameters were analyzed for better understanding of their behavior and mutual relations. It was observed that as Danube flows through Serbia, its general eco-chemical status either stagnates or improves, but the rate of river self-purification often depends on the season of the year.

AB  - The Danube River is an international river, one part of which flows through Serbia. The eco-chemical status of the Danube River is a constant topic of interest both at the local level, in each country through which the Danube flows, and at the international level. General interest to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of waters and freshwater resources in the Danube River Basin led to the development of a system for monitoring the river, which has produced data sets of its eco-chemical status. These have been collected over many years in Serbia; however, the present interest was focused only on the period from 1992 until 2006, i.e., a 15-year period. The process of defining trends of selected eco-chemical parameters, using linear regression analysis with a defined level of significance, and their separation from natural variability is of the highest importance for defining the changes in the water parameters. Through them, the fate and behavior of the eco-chemical parameters of the Danube in Serbia can be recognized and the prediction of their trends in the near future can be attempted. The obtained results revealed a constant improvement and acceptable trends of the eco-chemical status of the Danube River, as well as, substantial differences in the quality of the inflowing and out flowing water.
AB  - Dunav je međunarodna reka koja jednim delom prolazi i kroz Srbiju. Ekohemijski status Dunava je tema koja je konstantno u žiži interesovanja kako na lokalnom (unutar država kroz koje Dunav protiče), tako i na međunarodnom nivou. Usled generalnog interesa da se obezbedi i održiva ravnomerna upotreba vode i slatkovodnih resursa u basenu reke Dunav, razvijen je rečni monitoring sistem koji je grupe podataka o ekohemijskom statusu Dunava na prostoru Srbije prikupljao tokom više godina. Ovaj rad je fokusiran na petnaestogodišnji period, od 1992. do 2006. godine. Utvrđivanje postojanja trendova korišćenjem linearne regresije, uz tačno određen nivo značaja vrednosti odabranih ekohemijskih parametara kao i utvrđivanja razlike u odnosu na prirodnu varijabilnost parametara, bilo je od velikog značaja za određivanje promene rečnih parametara. Pomoću njih, pokušano je određivanje sudbine i ponašanja ekohemijskih parametara Dunava na teritoriji Srbije i predviđanje njihove vrednosti u budućnosti. Dobijeni rezultati otkrili su konstantno popravljanje i prihvatljive trendove promena ekohemijskog statusa Dunava kao i primetne razlike kvaliteta vode između ulaza u Srbiju i izlaza Dunava iz Srbije.

AB  - Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitous in all environmental media. Because of their persistence, they are present even in regions where they haven't been released before. POPs are toxic even in very low concentrations, many of them being carcinogenic. Basic representatives and groups of POPs, sources in the environment, ways of transport and elimination, impact to the human health and the environment are presented in this article. At the end Stockholm Convention is mentioned, an international legally binding agreement on persistent organic pollutants.
AB  - Dugotrajni organski zagađivači (persistent organic pollutants - POPs) su jedinjenja široko rasprostranjena u svim medijima životne sredine. Zbog svoje dugotrajnosti nepromenjeni prelaze velike razdaljine, usled čega se javljaju i u regionima u kojima nikad nisu bili ispuštani. Toksični su u vrlo malim koncentracijama, a mnogi od njih su kancerogeni. U članku su pobrojani osnovni predstavnici i grupe, predstavljeni su izvori emitovanja u životnu sredinu, načini transporta i eliminacije, uticaj na životnu sredinu i zdravlje. Na kraju je kratak prikaz Stokholmske konvencije, međunarodnog dokumenta nastalog radi regulacije POPs-ova.
