AB  - Pollution caused by heavy metals affects all forms of life. The aim of the study was to determine the content of toxic (Sr, Ni, Pb, V, Cd, U, Rb, As) and essential (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Se, Mn, Cr, Mo, Co) metals in the bone and whole blood samples, in regard to clinical means of long- and short-term exposure, respectively. For this purpose, the cortical and trabecular parts of femoral neck, as well as the blood samples, were collected to quantify bone-important metals by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-based techniques. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the most influential metal discriminating blood samples was Cu, while all other quantified elements were present in higher amounts in the bones. Additionally, trabecular bones (TBs) could be characterized by higher content of Mo, Cr, V, Mn, Co, As, and Ni compared to cortical bones (CBs). Linear discrimination analysis (LDA) was successfully applied to distinguish trabecular bone from the cortical bone. Significant correlation between essential Ca and toxic Sr with other elements was found and discussed. This study provides novel data on the effects of metal pollutants on bone health hazards. The results obtained for investigating metals may serve as a baseline for further clinical investigations in the orthopedic fields.

AB  - Four novel gold(III) complexes of general formulae [AuCl2{(S,S)-R(2)eddl}]PF6 (R(2)eddl = O,O'-dialkyl-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-(4-methyl)pentanoate, R= n-Pr, n-Bu, n-Pe, i-Bu; 1-4, respectively), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, UV/Vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, as well as high resolution mass spectrometry. Density functional theory calculations pointed out that (R,R)-N,N'-configuration diastereoisomers were energetically the most favorable. Duo to high cytotoxic activity complex 3 was chosen for stability study in DMSO, no decomposition occurs within 24 h, and for the reaction with ascorbic acid in which was reduced immediately. Additionally, 3 interacts with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as proven by UV/Vis spectroscopy. In vitro antitumor activity was determined against human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human myelogenous leukemia (K562), and human melanoma (Fem-x) cancer cell lines, as well as against non-cancerous human embryonic lung fibroblast cells MRC-5. The highest activity was observed against K562 cells (IC50: 5.04-6.51 mu M). Selectivity indices showed that these complexes are less toxic than cisplatin. 3 had a similar viability kinetics on HeLa cells as cisplatin. Drug accumulation studies in HeLa cells showed that the total gold uptake increased much faster than that of cisplatin pointing out that 3 more efficiently enters the cells than cisplatin. Furthermore, morphological and cell cycle analysis reveal that gold(III) complexes induced apoptosis in time- and dose-dependent manner.

AB  - A Pd(II) complex with methyl 2-([1-{2,4-dioxochroman-3-ylidene}ethyl]amino)acetate was synthesized. The structures of both the ligand and its Pd(II) complex were determined by elemental analysis, and IR and NMR spectroscopy. Recrystallization of the Pd(II) complex from DMF/water solution resulted in its hydrolysis and the formation of the dimethylamine (2-[{1-(2,4-dioxochroman-3-ylidene) ethyl} amino] acetato) palladium(II) complex, the structure of which was determined by elemental analysis, IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis.

AB  - A novel (S,S)-R(2)eddip ester, O,O'-diisopentyl-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-propanoate dihydrochloride (1) was synthesized and characterized by IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In vitro antitumor action of 1, and two more R(2)eddip esters, dialkyl (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-propanoate dihydrochlorides, obtained before (alkyl = n-Bu or n-Pe, 2 and 3, respectively), was determined against cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x), human chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562) cells, and a non-cancerous cell line human embryonic lung fibroblast (MRC-5), using the microculture tetrazolium test MTT assay. Esters 1-3 showed higher cytotoxicity and better selectivity in comparison to cisplatin, used as reference compound. The highest activity was expressed by 1, with IC50(Fem-x) value of 1.51 +/- 0.09 mu M.

AB  - Four novel bidentate N,N'-ligand precursors, including O,O'-dialkyl esters (alkyl = ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl and n-pentyl), L1 center dot 2HCl-L4 center dot 2HCl, of (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-2-(4-methyl)-pentanoic acid dihydrochloride [(S,S)-H(4)eddl]Cl-2 and the corresponding palladium(II) complexes 1-4, were prepared and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In vitro cytotoxicity of all compounds was determined against chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells (CLL). The compounds were found to exhibit higher antitumoral activity than cisplatin. The most active compound 2, [PdCl2{(S,S)-nPr(2)eddl}], was found to be 13.6 times more active than cisplatin on CLL cells. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

In vitro cytotoxicity of all compounds was determined against chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells (CLL). The compounds were found to exhibit higher antitumoral activity than cisplatin. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods and it was proved that the reaction is diastereoselective (H-1- and C-13-NMR) in the case of 2 (one diastereoisomer of four possible). The structure of 2 was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, indicating that the product is the (R,R)-N,N' configured isomer. In contrast, the reaction yielding 1 produced two of three possible diastereoisomers. DFT calculations support the formation of two diastereoisomers of I and of one diastereoisomer of 2.

AB  - Triammonium-N-dithiocarboxyiminodiacetate, (NH4)(3)L, a new dithiocarbamato derivative of iminodiacetate, has been synthesized. The coordination properties of the ligand were tested in reactions with copper(II), nickel(II) and palladium(II) salts in acidic solutions. Complexes with a general formula M(H2L)(2) were obtained, with the coordination taking place through the sulfur atoms of the dithiocarbamate moiety. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, UV/VIS and IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and magnetic measurements. In addition, the ligand was characterized by H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and molar conductivity measurements. The copper(II) complex is paramagnetic, while the nickel(II) and palladium(II) compounds are diamagnetic. The thermal decomposition of all compounds is continuous and the thermal stability of the complexes is higher than that of the ligand, as expected.

abstract = "Triammonium-N-dithiocarboxyiminodiacetate, (NH4)(3)L, a new dithiocarbamato derivative of iminodiacetate, has been synthesized. The coordination properties of the ligand were tested in reactions with copper(II), nickel(II) and palladium(II) salts in acidic solutions. Complexes with a general formula M(H2L)(2) were obtained, with the coordination taking place through the sulfur atoms of the dithiocarbamate moiety. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, UV/VIS and IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and magnetic measurements. In addition, the ligand was characterized by H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and molar conductivity measurements. The copper(II) complex is paramagnetic, while the nickel(II) and palladium(II) compounds are diamagnetic. The thermal decomposition of all compounds is continuous and the thermal stability of the complexes is higher than that of the ligand, as expected.",

AB  - The title compound was obtained by a synthesis from ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propanoic acid dihydrochloride (H(2)eddp . 2HCl) and potassium hexachloropalladate(IV) ( molar ratio 1: 1, in water). Its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction: monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, a = 8.198(1), b = 10.282(1), c = 9.080(1) Angstrom, beta = 103.62(1) degrees, V = 743.9(2) Angstrom(3), and Z = 2. The dianionic complex has a square-planar coordination geometry with four chloro ligands, and ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propanoic acid as dication in the second coordination sphere. This is the first reported Pd(II) structure with uncoordinated H(2)eddp.

AB  - Complexes of zinc(lI), cadmium(II). platinum(lI) and palladium(II) with a new poly-dentate dithiocarbamate ligand, 3-dithiocarboxy-3-aza-5-aminopentanoate (daap(-)), of the type M(daap)(2).nH(2)O (M = Zn(II), Cd(II), n = 2, or M = Pt(II) Pd(II) n = 0). have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis. IR and UV/VIS spectroscopy, as well as magnetic measurements. The spectra of the complexes suggest a bidentate coordination of the daap- ligand to the metal ions via the sulfur atoms of the deprotonated dithiocarbamato group. The fact that under the same experimental conditions its S-methyl ester does not form complexes could be taken as proof of the suggested coordination mode.
AB  - Reakcijom između cink(II), kadmijum(II), platina(II) i paladijum(II)-soli i kalijum- 3-ditiokarboksi-3-aza-5-aminopentanoata dobijeni su dogovarajući kompleksi tipa M(daap)2.nH2O. Izolovani kompleksi su okarakterisani elementarnom analizom, IR i UV/VIS spektroskopijom kao i merenjem magnetnih susceptibiliteta. Spektri kompleksa sugerišu bidentatnu koordinaciju daap liganda sa navedenim metalnim jonima preko atoma sumpora deprotonovane ditiokarbamato grupe. Kao dokaz navedenog načina koordinacije može poslužiti činjenica da pri istim eksperimentalnim uslovima S-metil estar liganda ne daje komplekse.

AB  - The thermal properties of some mixed complexes of cobalt(III) containing tetradentate ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionate (eddp) ligand and several amino acids were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability derived from decomposition temperatures was discussed in terms of amino acid present. It was shown that the processes of thermal decomposition of these complexes are multi-step degradation processes. Some of these can be separated into individual steps. The synthesis and characterization of nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes with the polydentate dialkyl dithiocarbamic acid ligand 3-dithiocarboxy-3-aza-5-aminopentanoate

AB  - Square planar complexes of Ni(II) and Cu(II) with potassium 3-dithiocarboxy-3-aza-5-aminopentanoate have been prepared by direct synthesis. The obtained neutral complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements, infrared and electronic spectra. The thermal behaviour of both the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes, and the ligand itself was investigated by DSC and TG.
AB  - Direktnom sintezom između nikal(II)- i bakar(II)- soli i kalijum 3-ditiokarboksi-3-aza-5-aminopentanoata nagrađeni su odgovarajući kompleksi kvadratno-planarne strukture. Izolovani neutralni kompleksi karakterisani su elementalnom analizom, infracrvenom i elektronskom apsorpcionom spektroskopijom, kao i merenjem magnetnih susceptibiliteta. Termičko ponašanje kompleksa i liganda ispitivano je primenom DSC i TG metoda.

AB  - A new bidentate ligand butyl-(1-methyl-3-phenyl-propyl)-dithiocarbamate (bmPhipdtc) was prepared, as the sodium salt. In the reaction of hexaaminecobalt(III) chloride with NabmPhipdtc, the corresponding tris[butyl-(1-methyl-3-phenyl-propyl)-dithiocarbamato]cobalt(III), [Co(bmPhipdtc)(3)] complex was prepared. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, electronic absorption, H-1 and C-13-NMR spectroscopy.
AB  - Sintetisan je novi bidentatni ligand butil-(1-metil-3-fenil-propil)-ditiokarbamat (bmΦpdtc), kao natrijumova so. Reakcijom heksaamminkobalt(III)-hlorida i navedenog liganda dobijen je odgovarajući kompleks tris[butil-(1-metil-3-fenil-propil) ditiokarbamato]kobalt(III), [Co(bmΦpdtc)3]. Kompleks je okarakterisan elementalnom analizom, infracrvenim, elektronsko-apsorpcionim, 1H i 13C-NMR spektrima.

AB  - The review summarizes the results of recent studies on edda-type metal complexes. It focuses on work published during the period 1984-2001. The metals include are Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, Sn, Fe, V, Rh, Pt, Ru, whereas edda-type represents ethylenediamine-N,N-diacetate, ethylenediamine-N,N-di-acetate, N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate, N,N'-diethylethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate, 1,2-cyclohexanediamine-N,N'-diacetate, N,N'-dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine-N,N'-diacetate, ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionate, N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionate, ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-S-alpha-propionate, N,N'-dimethyl-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-alpha-propionate, 1,3-propanediamine-N,N'-diacetate (trimethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate), 1,3-propanediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionate (trimethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionate), N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine-N,N'di-alpha-butyrate, N,N'-diethylethylenediamine-N,N'-di-alpha-butyrate, 1-diethylenetriamineacetate (8-amino-3,6-diazao-ctanoate), ethylenepropylenetriamineacetate (9-amino-3,6-diazaoctanoate), dipropylenetriamineacetate (10-amino-3,6-diazaoctanoate), N,N-bis(2-aminoethyl)glycinate, N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)glycinate, N-(2-aminoethyl)-N-(3-aminopropyl)glycinate, N-(2-aminoethyl)iminodiacetate (N-(2-aminoethyl)-N-carboxymethylglycine), N-(3-aminopropyl)imino diacetate tetradentate ligands. This paper provides a review of these complexes including their syntheses and X-ray crystal structures, spectroscopic (IR, Raman, NMR, ESR, electronic absorption and CD) measurements, electrochemistry, kinetic and thermodynamic information, magnetic properties, hydrolysis phenomena as well as chromatographic studies.

AB  - The meridional geometrical isomer of uns-cis-(ethylenediamine-N-N'-di-3-propionato)(S-norleucinato)cobalt(III) complex has been prepared by the reaction of sodium uns-cis-(ethylenediamine-N-N'-di-3-propionato)(carbonato)cobaltate(III) with S-norleucine at 75 degrees C. The complex was isolated choromatographically and characterized by elemental analyses, electron absorption and infrared spectroscopy.
AB  - Sintetisan je i okarakterisan meridijalni izomer uns-cis-(etilendiamin-N-N'-di-3-propionato)(S-norleucinato)kobalt(III) hemihidrat. Kompleks je dobiven reakcijom natrijum-uns-cis-(etilendiamin-N-N'-di-3-propionato)kobaltata(III) dihidratai S-norleucina na 75 ºC. Kompleks je izolovan hromatografski i okarakterisan elementalnom analizom, elektronsko-apsorpcionom i infracrvenom spektroskopijom.

AB  - The mixed uns-cis(beta-diketonato)(1,3-propanediamine-N,N'-diacetato)cobalt(III) complexes (beta-diketonato ligands = 2,4-pentanedione, 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione) were prepared by the reaction of sodium uns-cis-(1,3-propanediamine-N,N'-diacetato)(carbonato)cobaltate(III) and the corresponding symmetrical beta-diketone at 75 degrees C. The complexes were isolated chromatographically and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and electron absorption spectroscopy.

Thin-layer chromatography of facial and meridional isomers of Co(III) and Cr(III) complexes on polyacrylonitrile sorbent

AB  - The effect of facial-meridional geometrical isomerism of metal complexes on their chromatographic behaviour on a thin layer of polyacrylonitrile sorbent was examined. To that purpose the three following series of complexes were chromatographed: [Co(eddp)Am], where eddp is ethylenediamine-N,N'-3-propionato ligand, Am is glycinato, alaninato, valinato, leucinato, isoleucinato or isobutyrato ligands, [CoAm3], where Am is glycinato, beta-alaninato, valinato or leucinato ligands as well as two pairs of isomer complexes of [Macacphac(3)] type, where M is Co(III) or Cr(III) and acacphac is 1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionato ion. For their chromatographic separation four mono- and thirteen polycomponent solvent systems were used. In all the examined cases meridional isomers were found to exhibit higher hR(F) values than corresponding facial isomers. Finally, some possible separation mechanisms are discussed.
