AB  - The identification of agricultural food production systems has gained importance in order to protect both human health and the environment. The importance of organic production system of agriculture which involves the application of natural processes and substances, and limits or completely eliminates the use of synthesized means is emphasized. Knowledge of the mineral composition in tomato samples can be used as a potent tool in the identification of chemical markers as potential indicators of the farming system. A set of tomato samples taken from two factorial randomized trials were comprehended eight different varieties, belonging to four tomato types: large—BEEF and CLUSTER, and mini and midi—CHERRY and PLUM tomatoes, cultivated under two different farming systems: integral (IPM) and organic (O) were characterized based on the composition of the minerals. A total of 44 elements were quantified. To establish criteria for the classification of the samples and confirm a unique set of parameters of variation among the types of production, sophisticated chemometric techniques were used. The results indicate that the accumulation of elements varies between 8 tomato varieties and 2 different growing systems. The contents of Al, Mn, As, Pb, and some of the rare-earth elements (REEs) are able to distinguish between production types. Examination of different hybrids, which belong to different types in two production systems: organic and integral within Zeleni hit (official Enza and Vitalis trial and breeding station), was done with the aim of reaching a methodology of diversification, ie complete traceability of organic production, and to contribute to distinguishing types of agricultural systems and enhancing the possibility of acquiring a valuable authenticity factor about the type of agricultural production system employed for the cultivation of tomatoes.

AB  - Modest progress has been made in understanding the role of trace elements as endocrine disruptors. The aim of this study was to examine whether there is a change in the content of trace elements in thyroid disease, as well as whether the ratio of elements could be considered a blood marker for thyroid disease. In addition, this study examined the influence of biological and clinical/pathological parameters on the elemental profile. Blood samples from patients diagnosed with multinodular goiter (MNG), thyroid adenoma (TA), and thyroid cancer (TC) were examined and compared with control samples using chemometric analysis. The concentrations of essential (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) and toxic elements (Ni, As, Cd, Pb, U) were determined by ICP-MS. This study showed for the first time that the content of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, and Pb in pathological blood samples was significantly lower compared to the control, while opposite results were obtained for As, Cd, and U. Based on the classification model, the most important trace metals for discrimination of MNG and TC from the control group (CG) were Co and Zn, while Co, Zn, and Mn influenced the distinction of CG from TA. Moreover, it was found that Cu/Zn and U/Se ratios had significantly increased values in pathological blood samples leading to the possibility of establishing new circulating screening markers. These findings can represent significant translational information since these diseases are widespread and the diagnostic procedure is still difficult in many cases.

Human biomonitoring of essential, nonessential, rare earth, and noble elements in placental tissues

This investigation evaluated the levels of essential (Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo) and nonessential trace metals with recognized toxicity (Be, Al, Ti, V, Ni, Ga, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Hg, Pb, Bi, Th, U), together with rare earth elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu), and noble metals (Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Ag) in the placental tissues of healthy pregnant women (n = 105). The selection of participants was undertaken with special reference to specific confounding factors that could influence the trace element profiles. Among trace elements, Zn was the most abundant and Lu was the least abundant. Cd and Os placental levels show a tendency to increase with women's age. Compared with literature data, high levels of Ni were found. This is the first study that provides the composition levels of essential and toxic trace elements, rare earth elements, and noble metals in human placental tissues. Also, for the first time, normal (reference) ranges for 50 (ultra)trace elements in placental tissues are proposed. Reference ranges are especially important in biomonitoring studies, which nowadays give increasing importance to the analysis of solid tissues instead of body fluids. Overall, the information provided in this study can serve as a starting point for further clinical trials and/or prediction of potential risks to pregnancy.

The baseline status of trace metals in adrenal tissue is unresolved, while the elemental profile for any adrenal pathology has not been examined so far. This study aimed to determine the baseline status of important toxic (Ni, As, Cd, Pb, Th, U) and essential trace elements (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in healthy adrenal tissues (HATs) as well as to examine whether there are alterations in the elemental composition of adenomatous adrenal tissues (AATs). Furthermore, this study aimed to find potential trace metals that could play a role in the pathogenesis of adrenal adenoma (AA).

Methods
The study included 45 patients diagnosed with AA. Impacts of relevant parameters such as gender, age, smoking habits and nodular sizes were considered. All samples were subjected to microwave digestion and the trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Results
This is the first study that provided an insight into the elemental status of HATs. It was also shown that AATs had altered trace metal contents. Compared to HATs, the most significant findings were related to the high content of essential (Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) and Pb as a non-essential metal. Although gender, age and smoking habits had a modest effect on metal profiles, the most significant alterations were related to the nodular diameter above 4 cm, indicating that the growth of benign tumor could influence changes in elemental composition.

Conclusion
For the first time the baseline contents of essential and toxic trace metals in HATs were determined. The results of this study may highlight the role of toxic and essential trace metals in AAs and could provide new insights into the molecular basis of pathophysiological changes caused by the hazardous effects of trace metals on adrenal structure and function.

AB  - Type of the wood used for the aging highly influences the quality of alcoholic beverages. In this research we explored the potential of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) to establish fingerprints characteristic for each wood and to enable determining the type of the wood used in the aging process. Eleven different wood samples were used to prepare three different types of spirits during 15 months. The highest extraction rate was obtained during the first month, while further aging was followed with almost constant amount of extracted polyphenols. Black locust, myrobalan plum, and mulberry extracts were discriminated from the spirits aged in oak and wild cherry wood when statistical analysis was applied. Although clear classification of all samples was not achieved, this long term study demonstrated a potential of both CV and DPV for differentiating wood species used in the aging, hence in the quality control of spirits. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - The goal of this work was to develop green electrode material that unites all advantages of domestic made, synthesized porous carbon powder and ceria dioxide nanoparticles known due to exceptional catalytic properties. Thermal decomposition of Novolac phenol-formaldehyde resin and cerium sulfate resulting in producing a high-performance CeO2 porous carbon material highly sensitive to dopamine (DA) electrooxidation. Morphological and structural characteristics of the material were determined by SEM and XRD measurements, while electrochemical characterization was performed by EIS and CV. The sensitivity of DA determination on the proposed CeO2-doped carbon material was enhanced by adding multi-wall carbon nanotubes to finally prepare a mixture for a specific carbon paste electrode (TPCeO2&MWCNT@CPE). SWV technique was used for quantification of dopamine in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 6 in the concentration range of 0.5-100 μM of DA, with the detection limit of 0.14 μM and quantification limit of 0.44 μM. Good selectivity overstudied bioactive compounds enables the successful and efficient application of the proposed electrode and developed an analytical procedure for the determination of dopamine in spiked urine samples.

AB  - Novel polyurethane nanocomposite (PUN) materials containing different surface-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared by in situ polymerization methodology. Polyurethane network was formed from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based macrodiol (PDMS), 4,4′-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate (MDI), and hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo-generation (BH-20; used as crosslinking agent). PU and PU/MSN nanocomposites contained equal ratios of soft PDMS and hard MDI-BH-20 segments. Non-functionalized and surface-functionalized (with 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl methylphosphonate (FOMSN) and 2-[methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)6−9propyl]trimethoxysilane (PEGMSN)) MSNs were used as the nanofillers at a concentration of 1 wt%. Prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analyses (DMTA), nanoindentation, equilibrium swelling and water absorption measurements. Characteristics of the prepared PUNs when in contact with a biological environment were assessed through testing their biocompatibility, protein adsorption and adhesion of endothelial cells. The favourable influence of MSNs on the physico-chemical and biological characteristics of these novel PUN materials was identified, which evidences their vast applicability potential as coatings for medical devices and implants.

AB  - The main biologically active components of plants belonging to the genus Allium, responsible for their biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory, are organosulfur compounds. The aim of this study was to synthetize the mixture of dipropyl polysulfides (DPPS) and to test their biological activity in acute hepatitis. C57BL/6 mice were administered orally with DPPS 6 h before intravenous injection of Concanavalin A (ConA). Liver inflammation, necrosis and hepatocytes apoptosis were determined by histological analyses. Cytokines in liver tissue were determined by ELISA, expression of adhesive molecules and enzymes by RT PCR, while liver mononuclear cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. DPPS pretreatment significantly attenuated liver inflammation and injury, as evidenced by biochemical and histopathological observations. In DPPS-pretreated mice, messenger RNA levels of adhesion molecules and NADPH oxidase complex were significantly reduced, while the expression of SOD enzymes was enhanced. DPPS pretreatment decreased protein level of inflammatory cytokines and increased percentage of T regulatory cells in the livers of ConA mice. DPPS showed hepatoprotective effects in ConA-induced hepatitis, characterized by attenuation of inflammation and affection of Th17/Treg balance in favor of T regulatory cells and implicating potential therapeutic usage of DPPS mixture in inflammatory liver diseases.

Furthermore, this study showed elementary changes in AA patients. The AATs had significantly higher amounts of Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, Pb, K, and Mg compared to the HATs. The opposite results were obtained for the same elements in the AB samples, indicating that the benign adrenal masses could have the ability to withdraw these elements from circulation. These results were supplemented by principal component analysis (PCA). ICP-based techniques were successfully applied to accurately provide a more comprehensive insight into the clinically important elements in the solid tissue and blood samples. The results of this study are a deep-dive into the likely future of clinical studies. Moreover, target elements should be taken into consideration as novel initiating and/or modifying factors of AA, after further research, this would include the analysis of a larger number of samples and prospective follow-up of the patient’s elemental profile.

AB  - Pheochromocytoma (PCC) is an unusual benign adrenal tumor with an unexamined status of the elements. This study delivers the first insight into the levels of microelements (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Th), toxic elements (Cd, Pb, U), and macroelements (Na, K, Mg, Ca) in both adrenal tissue and whole blood samples collected from PCC patients. The results were strengthened by comparing recorded findings with the patients’ healthy adrenal tissue (HAT) and with whole blood samples from the healthy individuals. PCCs had significantly higher levels of Zn, Se, Na, K, and Mg and lower levels of Mn, Co, Pb, and As than that of HATs. Compared to healthy blood samples, the patients’ blood exhibited considerably higher levels of Na, K, and Ca but significantly lower levels of Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, and Mg. Females had significantly higher levels of essential Se and toxic Pb and Cd in their PCC tissue samples compared to males. PCC tissue levels of Mn and Cu were significantly elevated in smokers over levels in nonsmokers and in PCC patients with tumor sizes below 5 cm compared to PCC diameters above 5 cm. The data presented in this study provide a new insight into the pathophysiology of PCC. Thus, recorded elements should be considered as initiators/modifiers of PCC and potential inductors of malignant transformation. The findings of this research deepen scientific understanding of this rare adrenal disease, which, in turn, could highlight the pathogenesis of PCC.

AB  - Studies indicate that the soil, water and consequently foodstuffs in Serbia are significantly poor in zinc (Zn), and thus, it is likely that there is a Zn deficiency in the Serbian population. This study examined the Zn status in multiple clinical samples, including body fluids (serum, cerebrospinal fluid), whole blood and Zn-rich solid tissues (thyroid and brain tissue). Differences between sex and age were also considered, and comparative analysis of Zn status with other world populations was performed. Serum samples from a large number of Serbian adults approximately had twofold lower Zn amounts when compared to other populations. A similar trend was obtained for whole blood. Males had significantly higher amounts of Zn in serum, whole blood and thyroid tissue samples than females. Higher amounts of Zn were observed in the group older than 50 years. Importantly, in thyroid and brain tissues, Zn was 10- and 20-fold lower, respectively, than reported in the literature. Our results indicate that the population in Serbia could be considered Zn deficient. Therefore, adequate oral Zn supplementation and/or foodstuff fortification should be considered to prevent the deleterious effects caused by Zn deficiency.

AB  - Electrochemical degradation procedure for the removal of organic dye Reactive Blue 52 using nano-magnetite-doped carbonaceous electrodes was proposed. The electrode was prepared by calcination of graphite grains mixed with phenol–formaldehyde binder modified with iron nitrate. The morphology and phase composition of the electrodes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical degradation was done in Nafion membrane-divided cell where anodic part was filled with color solution and cathodic with supporting electrolyte. Parameters affecting on decolorization rate were investigated. A high increase in the removal efficiency, under optimized parameters, was noticed using carbon electrodes containing 1 mass% of magnetite in the presence of 3 mM hydrogen peroxide and 7 mass% of magnetite in the presence of 10 mM hydrogen peroxide. Almost 100% decolorization was achieved during 30 min with 62–77% of the mineralization. Based on these results, it can be concluded that this approach offered green, cheap and efficient degradation of reactive dyes and could be used as promising candidate for wastewater processing in the textile industry.

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate, analyze, and compare applied techniques suitable for achieving efficient removal of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) (malathion and fenitrothion) from aqueous solutions and analyze the degradation products and processes. Pesticide degradation efficiency (%) was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a photodiode array detector (DAD), while mineralization degree was determined by total organic carbon analysis (TOC). Daphnia magna was used for screening the environmental safety aspects of the degradation methods, i.e., for assessing the toxicity of solutions obtained after degradation. Additionally, a surface river water was utilized to examine the likely influence of organic matter on the pesticides’ degradation. Pesticide degradation products were identified using gas chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass detector (GC-MS/MS) as well as ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a linear ion trap, Orbitrap mass spectrometer (UHPLC-LTQ Orbitrap MS), and a simple pesticide degradation mechanism is proposed. Removal of pesticides from water using chlorine dioxide was successful, resulting in high degradation efficiency (98% for malathion and 81% for fenitrothion). Partial mineralization was achieved, and Daphnia magna mortality decreased in the waters containing degradation products (compared with the parent pesticides), indicating that the solutions formed were less toxic than the parent pesticides. Lower degradation rates (80% for malathion and 72% for fenitrothion) in Sava River water were measured, indicating the influence of the organic matter contained in this naturally occurring surface water. The results prove that chlorine dioxide could be used as an agent for successful removal of these OPPs from water.

AB  - Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) degradation of the organophosphorus pesticides azamethiphos (AZA) and dimethoate (DM) (10 mg/L) in deionized water and in Sava River water was investigated for the first time. Pesticide degradation was studied in terms of ClO2 level (5 and 10 mg/L), degradation duration (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h), pH (3.00, 7.00, and 9.00), and under light/dark conditions in deionized water. Degradation was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass detector was used to identify degradation products of pesticides. Total organic carbon was measured to determine the extent of mineralization after pesticide degradation. Real river water was used under recommended conditions to study the influence of organic matter on pesticide degradation. High degradation efficiency (88–100% for AZA and 85–98% for DM) was achieved in deionized water under various conditions, proving the flexibility of ClO2 degradation for the examined organophosphorus pesticides. In Sava River water, however, extended treatment duration achieved lower degradation efficiency, so ClO2 oxidized both the pesticides and dissolved organic matter in parallel. After degradation, AZA produced four identified products (6-chlorooxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorothioate; 6-chloro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O-dimethyl S-hydrogen phosphorothioate) and DM produced three (O,O-dimethyl S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphorothioate; e.g., omethoate; S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) O,O-dihydrogen phosphorothioate; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorodithioate). Simple pesticide degradation mechanisms were deduced. Daphnia magna toxicity tests showed degradation products were less toxic than parent compounds. These results contribute to our understanding of the multiple influences that organophosphorus pesticides and their degradation products have on environmental ecosystems and to improving pesticide removal processes from water.

AB  - Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the endocrine neoplasm that occurs the most often worldwide, and its molecular pathophysiology is still not well characterized. Redox status is recognized as an important factor of carcinogenesis, but its influence on the PTC's clinical course needs to be better elucidated. The aim of this research was to determine the tissue redox status of 65 PTC and 45 colloid goiter (CG) patients together with antioxidative cofactor metal profiling. The malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration was used to access the prooxidation level, while antioxidant mechanisms were estimated by assaying the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR). The antioxidative cofactor metals included quantification of Se, Cu, Zn, and Mn concentration. PTC tissues had normal prooxidation levels and increased GPx and GR activity. The activity of SOD has been significantly reduced in multicentric PTC dissemination and increased in smokers. SOD activity was directly dependent on MDA levels in CG tissues. CG patients with retrosternal goiter had reduced MDA concentration and SOD activity. Numerous correlations between redox parameters in PTC tissues reveal good co-activation of antioxidative mechanisms and cooperative response on prooxidation. PTC tissues had decreased Se levels and increased concentration of Cu and Mn in comparison to other tissues. MDA concentration and SOD activity were significant predictors of PTC's multicentric dissemination and for the existence of lymph node metastases, respectively. Particularly, the concentration of Cu predicted the retrosternal localization in CG patients. Significant findings presented in this study provide a possibility for development of novel prognostic molecular biomarkers of PTC and CG.

AB  - Developing ultraefficient electrocatalytic materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with low content of expensive platinum group metals (PGMs) via low-energy-input procedures is the key to the successful commercialization of green water electrolysis technologies for sustainable production of high-purity hydrogen. In this study, we report a facile room-temperature synthesis of ultrafine metallic Ir nanoparticles on conductive, proton-intercalated TiO2 nanotube (H-TNT) arrays via galvanic displacement. A series of experiments demonstrate that a controlled transformation of the H-TNT surface microstructure from neat open-top tubes to disordered nanostripe bundles (“nanograss”) is highly beneficial for providing an abundance of exposed Ir active sites. Consequently, for nanograss-engineered composites, outstanding HER activity metrics are achieved even at very low Ir(III) precursor concentrations. An optimum Ir@TNT cathode loaded with 5.7 μgIr cm−2 exhibits an overpotential of −63 mV at −100 mA cm−2 and a mass activity of 34 A mgIr−1 at −80 mV under acidic conditions, along with excellent catalytic durability and structural integrity. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the hydrogen-rich TiO2 surface not only stabilizes the deposited Ir and weakens its H binding strength to a moderate intensity, but also actively takes part in the HER mechanism by refreshing the Ir catalytic sites near the Ir|H–TiO2 interface, thus substantially promoting H2 generation. The comprehensive characterization combined with theory provides an in-depth understanding of the electrocatalytic behavior of H-TNT supported PGM nanoparticles and demonstrates their high potential as competitive electrocatalyst systems for the HER.

Oxidative degradation and mineralization of bentazone from water

A simple mechanistic scheme for oxidativedegradation of bentazone was proposed based on the degradation products that wereidentified. Decrease in D. magna mortality, high degradation efficiency and partial bentazone mineralizationwere achieved by waters containing bentazone degradation products, which indicatethe formation of less toxic compounds than the parent bentazone and effective removal of bentazonefrom the waters. Bentazone degraded into four main degradation products. Humic acid fromSava River water influenced bentazone degradation, resulting in a lower degradation efficiency inthis matrix (about 10% lower than in distilled water). Chlorine dioxide treatment of water todegrade bentazone is efficient and offers a novel approach in the development of new technologyfor removal of this herbicide from contaminated water.

AB  - Urban airborne particles contain a wide spectrum of components, known to have harmful effects on human health. This study reports a detailed investigation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), chemical content and oxidative potential derived from two different urban environments. During summer and winter, 20-day campaigns were conducted at Belgrade city center (urban-background site – UB) and Bor (urban-industrial site – UI). Using various analytical techniques, carbonaceous compounds, water-soluble inorganic ions, major and trace elements were determined, while the oxidative potential of PM2.5 was estimated by dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay (OPDCFH values). The mean PM2.5 concentrations in both urban environments were above the recommended daily value, and the dominant PM2.5 mass contributor was organic matter (29–55%). The OC/EC ratio was significantly higher at UB site during winter, which was an indication of a considerable contribution of secondary organic carbon to the overall organic carbon (OC). Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) was also higher at UB than at UI site, and it probably came from the same sources as OC. In general, the different partition of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in warm and cold periods affected the number of organic components. Sulfates and nitrates were the most abundant ions at both sites and they counted approximately 40% (summer) and 50% (winter) of total ions. Further, the concentrations of the most elements, particularly some potentially carcinogenic elements such as As, Cd and Pb were significantly higher at UI, due to the emissions from the copper smelter complex in the vicinity. The mean OPDCFH values were similar during the summer at both sampling sites, whereas a statistically significant difference between sites was noticed in favor of UB environment in winter.

AB  - The pathogenesis of malignant brain tumors (MBTs) should be better understood due to the evident association between prolonged exposure to metals and increased risk of MBTs. The present research aimed to find trace metals that could contribute to the pathogenesis of MBTs. Essential trace elements (Mn, Co, Zn, Cu, Se) and relevant toxic metals (Al, Ni, As, Sr, Cd, Ce, Pt, Pb, U) in the serum, cell fraction (CF), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cancerous tissue (CT) samples of MBT patients were analyzed. The results were compared with sex- and age-matched control groups. For the first time, this research showed that elemental profiles of serum, CF, CSF and CT samples in MBT patients were significantly altered compared to the appropriate controls, as well as that higher contents of trace elements (particularly Mn, Se, and Pb) could be involved in the pathogenesis of MBTs. However, the most noticeable change found was the elevated U content, indicating its considerable role as a major cerebral discriminator of the presence/absence of MBTs. The U/Se ratio could be considered as an appropriate blood marker in diagnostic MBT evaluation. The reported results could contribute to better understanding of the poorly understood pathogenesis of MBTs. Furthermore, the reported results could highlight a molecular basis for the pathophysiological changes caused by the hazardous effects of trace metals on brain homeostasis.

AB  - The background level of lead (Pb) in drinking water in Serbia represents a significant health issue. The aim of study was to examine the content of significant toxic and essential trace metals (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Pb, Th, and U) in the thyroid tissues with diagnosed colloid goiter (CG). Different variables were investigated (sex, age, smoking habits, goiter size, and previous history of any thyroid disease). The study was designed to compare the goiter tissues (GTs) to sex- and age-matched healthy- and malignant-thyroid tissues (HTTs and MTTs, respectively). All trace metals were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The reduced content of essential elements (Mn and Se) and increased content of toxic metals (Pb, Th, and U) were found in GTs compared with HTTs. The increased content of the same toxic metals separated GTs from MTTs, as well as reduced content of Mn and Cd. Our results indicated that Pb acts as the main goitrogen, which could highlight its role in the unknown etiology of CG disease. Pb/Se ratio could be considered as a relevant parameter for the tissue separation of GTs from HTTs and/or MTTs.
