AB - The essential oil from aerial parts of Tanacetum larvatum (Gris.) Kanitz, an endemic perennial herb collected at three various natural habitats in Montenegro (Planinica [Sample a], Visitor [Sample b] and Sinjajevina [Sample c]), were analyzed using GC and GC/MS. Sixty-four components were identified, representing 83.1%, 96.6% and 89.4% of the total oils content in the Samples a, b and c, respectively. The major constituent in Samples a and b, was oxygenated monoterpene, trans-sabinyl acetate (38.1% and 55.8% respectively). Monoterpene hydrocarbons, beta-pinene (13.5%) and santolinatriene (30.6%), were found to be the dominant components in Sample c. The toxic trans-sabinyl acetate was present only in traces in this sample. trans-Chrysanthenyl acetate, as one of major components in feverfew essential oil, has not been previously identified in the investigated essential oils.

AB - Tanacetum larvatum (Gris.) Kanitz. is an endemic perennial herb distributed on a rocky terrain in Serbia(Kosovo), Montenegro and Albania. The chemical composition of T larvatum essential oil, obtained from two locations in Montenegro (Mt. Komovi [Sample II] and Mt. Prokletije [Sample II]) was investigated. The oils obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by GC and GC/MS, on the two different capillary columns. The aerial parts of T. larvatum yielded 0.3% and 0.2% of a yellowish oil (Sample I and Sample II, respectively). About 40 compounds were identified, representing similar to 89% and 96% of the total oil content in the Samples I and II, respectively. tran's-Sabinyl acetate was found to be the dominant component (51.2% and 69.7%). Among the rest of compounds beta-pinene (7.7% and 4.3%) and camphor (6.3% and 4.3%) were the most abundant in both samples.

AB - Gas chromatography and GC/MS methods were used to detect volatile components of three home-made natural old plum brandy samples and one sample of industrially-produced plum brandy. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of this extracts led to the identification of 99 components, including 46 esters, 7 hydrocarbons (alkanes and alkenes), 3 aldehydes, 9 alcohols, 1 lactone, 1 ketone, 8 acetals, 14 terpenes, 8 acids and 2 phenols. Ethyl esters of C-8-C-18 acids were the most abundant in all samples. In addition, the content of methanol, ethanol and higher alcohols (C-3-C-5) was determined.

AB - We used two species of light-requiring seeds, Paulownia tomentosa, which have absolute light requirement (no germination in darkness), and Stellaria media seeds, which germinate in darkness to a certain extent because of presence of preformed active phytochrome, to obtain results strongly suggesting that gibberellic acid nitrite stimulates seed germination via its capability as a functional NO donor. Exogenous application of gibberellic acid nitrite stimulates gibberellin-insensitive Stellaria media seed germination in darkness as do a wide variety of NO donors. Pure gibberellic acid could replace the light requirement of P tomentosa seeds, thus enabling them to germinate in darkness. Gibberellic acid nitrite did not have this effect. A stimulative effect from gibberellic acid nitrite could be detected only after exposure of these seeds to short, 10 min, pulse of red light. Taken together, these results suggest that gibberellic activity of gibberellic acid nitrite is lost after nitrosation but, regarding to the presence of -O-NO moiety in the molecule, gibberellic acid nitrite shares stimulative properties in seed germination with other compounds with NO-releasing properties.

AB - The results of the essential oil composition confirm that there are differences between populations within the same subspecies (Satureja montana ssp. montana), between the subspecies (Satureja montana ssp. montana and Satureja montana sap. pisidica) and the species (Satureja montana and S. kitaibelii). The essential oil composition of S. montana ssp. montana is more related to the Satureja montana ssp. pisidica than S. kitaibelii which separates as a whole species. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. AB - Essential oil of Achillea chrysocoma Friv. was investigated for composition and antibacterial activity. Twenty-eight identified compounds constituted 91.5% of the oil. The main compounds of the oil were borneol (10.1%), terpinen-4-ol (9.2%), cis-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (8.2%) and trans-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (7.9%). Antilbacterial tests showed pronounced activity of the oil against Gram negative bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
