Moss Biomonitoring of Organic Pollutants: Up-to-date Achievments, Needs and Potentials

AB  - Air pollution represents a key environmental hazard to human health and disease burden worldwide. Emissions of air contaminants by human activities refer to different classes of organic compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), which are widely known for numerous adverse effects. Characterized as hydrophobic, the pollutants bind to particles in soil and sediment, which can act as a secondary source of pollution for environmental media (water, air and living organisms). Although monitoring of organic pollutants (OPs) is a mandatory and on-going process across Europe and the United States, investigating the behavior of OPs is still challenging, as the available databases lack extensive geographical coverage and appropriate temporal periodicity. Biomonitoring using mosses has been highlighted as an emerging method for the assessment of air pollution, but extensive research has been devoted to the moss biomonitoring of trace elements, whereas less attention has been paid to OPs.
In this chapter, we present our research, which aimed to: i) investigate how exposure time affects the moss bag uptake of PAHs; ii) compare different chromatographic techniques for the determination of PAHs in moss samples and iii) provide an overview of the applicable advantages of moss bags over other (bio)monitors and the methodology aspects concerning moss biomonitoring of PAHs. We also present our experience regarding biomonitoring of organochlorines by another frequently used plant species – pine needles. The presented findings could serve as a valuable base for further research supporting moss biomonitoring as a suitable method for the spatio-temporal screening of OP presence in air as well as air quality management in general.

AB  - Diarylheptanoids are a group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in the Betulaceae family and characteristic for Alnus species. In this study, the chemotaxonomic power of diarylheptanoids, such as hirsutanonol-5-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, rubranoside A, oregonin, platyphylloside, alnuside A and hirsutanonol, has been investigated in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) for differentiation of Alnus species. Concentrations of six diarylheptanoids in the bark extracts of two natural populations of Alnus glutinosa (black alder) and Alnus incana (gray alder) were determined by -ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). PCA clearly shows the separation of three groups. Populations I (A. glutinosa) and II (A. incana) both consisted of individuals of the corresponding species. Four individuals from both sampled populations formed a separate group (population III), which possibly represents a hybrid group. Accordingly, diarylheptanoids may serve in combination with PCA as chemotaxonomic markers at the species level, which may also reveal hybrid species.

Residential heating contribution to level of air pollutants (PAHs, major, trace, and rare earth elements): a moss bag case study

AB  - In areas with moderate to continental climates, emissions from residential heating system lead to the winter air pollution peaks. The EU legislation requires only the monitoring of airborne concentrations of particulate matter, As, Cd, Hg, Ni, and B[a]P. Transition metals and rare earth elements (REEs) have also arisen questions about their detrimental health effects. In that sense, this study examined the level of extensive set of air pollutants: 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and 41 major elements, trace elements, and REEs using Sphagnum girgensohnii moss bag technique. During the winter of 2013/2014, the moss bags were exposed across Belgrade (Serbia) to study the influence of residential heating system to the overall air quality. The study was set as an extension to our previous survey during the summer, i.e., non-heating season. Markedly higher concentrations of all PAHs, Sb, Cu, V, Ni, and Zn were observed in the exposed moss in comparison to the initial values. The patterns of the moss REE concentrations normalized to North American Shale Composite and Post-Archean Australian Shales were identical across the study area but enhanced by anthropogenic activities. The results clearly demonstrate the seasonal variations in the moss enrichment of the air pollutants. Moreover, the results point out a need for monitoring of air quality during the whole year, and also of various pollutants, not only those regulated by the EU Directive.
