AB - In this study,we conducted a comprehensive investigation of newly synthesized fullerene derivatives developed for potential application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We explored three novel dihydrofuran-fused C60 fullerene derivatives (13, 14, and 15) that we respecifically designed to enhance solubility and interaction with the substrate, fluorine-dopedtinoxide (FTO). A comparative analysis was performed, with reference to the widely used phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and compound 12, from which 13, 14, and 15 are derived, to assess the impact of sugar units on materials properties. The synthesized compounds demonstrated significant solubility in common organic solvents, a critical factor in their potential application in wet-processed PSCs. Our investigation included electrochemical property analysis, thin film deposition, surface characterization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS measurements unveiled key in sights into charge transfer properties at the electrode/electrolyte interface, making the compounds attractive candidates for electron transport layers (ETLs) in PSCs.

AB - The synthesis and characterization of four dumbbell-shaped fullerene molecules connected by isosorbide and isomannide moieties is presented. Additionally, their electrochemical behavior and their ability to form complexes with [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) were investigated. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results of the fullerene dumbbells demonstrate a high electron affinity, indicating their strong interaction with electron-donating counterparts such as carbon nanorings, which possess complementary charge and shape properties. To study the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of complexation, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was employed. NMR titration experiments provided further insights into the binding stoichiometries. Two distinct approaches were utilized to create bridged structures: one based on cyclopropane and the other based on furan. Regardless of the type of linker used, all derivatives formed conventional 2 : 1 complexes denoted as [10]CPP2 ⊃C60derivative . However, the methano-dumbbell molecules exhibited distinct binding behavior, resulting in the formation of mono- and bis-pseudorotaxanes, as well as oligomers (polymers). The formation of linear polymers holds significant potential for applications in solar energy conversion processes.

AB - We present a novel approach for the enzymatic functionalization of graphene, utilizing horseradish peroxidase (HPO) and laccase (LC) from Trametes versicolor. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the covalent modification of non-homogeneous graphene with a low surface-to-volume ratio, both in solution and on solid support. Through thermogravimetry analysis, we estimate the degree of functionalization to be 11% with HPO and 4% with LC, attributed to the varying redox potentials of the enzymes. This work highlights the potential of enzymatic reactions for tailored functionalization of graphene under mild conditions.

AB - In this study, β-keto esters as readily available bio-based building blocks were used to decorate the C60 sphere. Generally, cyclopropanated fullerene derivatives are obtained by the standard Bingel–Hirsch procedure. Herein, omitting the iodine from the reaction mixture and adding TEMPO afforded dihydrofuran fused C60 fullerene derivatives. The mechanism of the reaction shifted from nucleophilic aliphatic substitution to oxidative [3 + 2] cycloaddition via fullerenyl cations as an intermediate. This mechanism is proposed based on a series of control experiments with radical scavengers. Therefore, dihydrofuran-fused C60 derivatives were selectively obtained in good yields and their structures were established based on UV-Vis, IR, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The electrochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculations were performed in order to investigate the difference in stability, electronic properties and π-electron delocalization between methano and furano fullerenes.

AB - Two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) represents one of the most appealing 2D materials due to its electronic, optical, and chemical properties. Many strategies have been pursued to face its environmental instability, covalent functionalization being one of the most promising. However, the extremely low functionalization degrees and the limitations in proving the nature of the covalent functionalization still represent challenges in many of these sheet architectures reported to date. Here we shine light on the structural evolution of 2D-BP upon the addition of electrophilic diazonium salts. We demonstrated the absence of covalent functionalization in both the neutral and the reductive routes, observing in the latter case an unexpected interface conversion of BP to red phosphorus (RP), as characterized by Raman, 31P-MAS NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (TG-GC-MS), as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) gave insights into the potential underlying radical mechanism, suggesting a Sandmeyer-like reaction.

Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (TG-GC-MS), as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) gave insights into the potential underlying radical mechanism, suggesting a Sandmeyer-like reaction.",

AB - The post-graphene era is undoubtedly marked by two-dimensional (2D) sheet polymers, such as black phosphorus (BP). This emerging material has a fascinating structure and outstanding electronic properties and has been postulated for a plethora of applications. The need to circumvent the pronounced oxophilicity of P atoms has dominated the research on this material in recent years, with the objective of finding the most effective method to improve its environmental stability. When it comes to chemical functionalization, the few approaches reported so far involve some drawbacks such as low degree of addition and low production ability. This review presents the concepts and strategies of our studies on the chemical functionalization of BP, both non-covalent and covalent, emphazising the current synthetic challenges. Moreover, we also provide some effective pathways for the chemical activation of the unreactive basal plane, the identification of the effective binding strategies, and the concept to overcome hurdles associated with characterization tools. This work will provide fundamental insights into the controlled chemical functionalization and characterization of BP, fostering the research on this appealing 2D material.

AB - Objects of the present study are improved fullerene C60 drug carrier properties trough encapsulation by microbial polysaccharides, levan (LEV), pullulan (PUL), and their hydrophobized cholesterol-derivatives (CHL and CHP), that show better interaction with cancer cells. The zeta potential, polydispersity index, and the diameter of particles were determined, and their cytotoxicity against three cancer cell lines were tested. Biochemical changes in HeLa cells are analyzed by synchrotron radiation (SR) FTIR spectro-microscopy combined with the principal component analysis (PCA). The most significant changes occur in HeLa cells treated with LEV-C60 and correspond to the changes in the protein region, i.e. Amide Iband, and the changes in the structure of lipid bodies and membrane fluidity are evident. The highest cytotoxicity was also induced by LEV-C60. In HeLa cells, cytotoxicity could not be strictly associated with biochemical changes in lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, but these findings are significant contribution to the study of the mechanism of interaction of C60-based nanoparticles with cellular biomolecules. In conclusion, LEV, PUL, CHL, and CHP enhanced fullerene C60potential to be used as target drug delivery system with the ability to induce specific intracellular changes in HeLa cancer cells.

AB - Two‐dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) represents one of the most appealing 2D materials due to its electronic, optical, and chemical properties. Many strategies have been pursued to face its environmental instability, covalent functionalization being one of the most promising. However, the extremely low functionalization degrees and the limitations in proving the nature of the covalent functionalization still represent challenges in many of these sheet architectures reported to date. Here we shine light on the structural evolution of 2D‐BP upon the addition of electrophilic diazonium salts. We demonstrated the absence of covalent functionalization in both the neutral and the reductive routes, observing in the latter case an unexpected interface conversion of BP to red phosphorus (RP), as characterized by Raman, 31P‐MAS NMR, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (TG‐GC‐MS), as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) gave insights into the potential underlying radical mechanism, suggesting a Sandmeyer‐like reaction.

AB - Reports about the influence of cerium-oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) on plants are contradictory due to their positive and negative effects on plants. Surface modification may affect the interaction of nCeO2 with the environment, and hence its availability to plants. In this study, the uncoated and glucose-, levan-, and pullulan-coated nCeO2 were synthesized and characterized. The aim was to determine whether nontoxic carbohydrates alter the effect of nCeO2 on the seed germination, plant growth, and metabolism of wheat and pea. We applied 200 mgL-1 of nCeO2 on plants during germination (Ger treatment) or three week-growth (Gro treatment) in hydroponics. The plant response to nCeO2 was studied by measuring changes in Ce concentration, total antioxidative activity (TAA), total phenolic content (TPC), and phenolic profile. Our results generally revealed higher Ce concentration in plants after the treatment with coated nanoparticles compared to uncoated ones. Considering all obtained results, Ger treatment had a stronger impact on the later stages of plant development than Gro treatment. The Ger treatment had a stronger impact on TPC and plant elongation, whereas Gro treatment affected more TAA and phenolic profile. Among nanoparticles, levan-coated nCeO2 had the strongest and positive impact on tested plants. Wheat showed higher sensitivity to all treatments.

AB - The chemical bulk reductive covalent functionalization of thin‐layer black phosphorus (BP) using BP intercalation compounds has been developed. Through effective reductive activation, covalent functionalization of the charged BP by reaction with organic alkyl halides is achieved. Functionalization was extensively demonstrated by means of several spectroscopic techniques and DFT calculations; the products showed higher functionalization degrees than those obtained by neutral routes

AB - The reactivity of the C-2v-symmetric pentakisadduct of C-60 with azomethine ylides and conjugated dienes was studied experimentally and computationally. This derivative possesses four [6,6] double bonds, each with unique electrophilicity. The Diels-Alder reaction studied is a regiospecific, kinetically and thermodynamically guided [4 + 2] process producing [5:1]-hexaadducts with an octahedral addition pattern. The kinetically controlled Prato reaction gives a mixture of regioisomeric [5:1]-hexaadducts. The synthesis of geometrically well-defined supramolecular architectures may benefit from these new types of highly functionalized [5:1]-hexaadducts.

AB - Polimerne solarne ćelije, kao izvor električne energije, poslednjih godina privlače mnogo pažnje zbog svoje ekološke prihvatljivosti, niske cene i fleksibilnosti.
AB - Lately polymer solar cells have attracted much attention, as renewable energy resourse due to being environmentally friendly, low cost and flexible. New organic precursors used in the solar cells construction have greatly enhanced energy power conversion efficiency. Because of its high electron affinity, fullerene derivatives become almost irreplaceable component in the active layer of the organic solar cells. These derivatives are used as an electron-accepting unit, which accepts electrons from the donor and ensures charge-separated states. The biggest drawbacks of C60 derivatives are still poor solubility in typical organic solvents and low absorption in the red part of the visible spectrum. To this day, a considerable amount of research has been devoted to improving electronic and morphological characteristics of these derivatives...

AB - Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has emerged as a signalling molecule capable of regulating several important physiological functions such as blood pressure, neurotransmission and inflammation. The mechanisms behind these effects are still largely elusive and oxidative posttranslational modification of cysteine residues (protein persulfidation or S-sulfhydration) has been proposed as the main pathway for H2S-induced biological and pharmacological effects. As a signalling mechanism, persulfidation has to be controlled. Using an improved tag-switch assay for persulfide detection we show here that protein persulfide levels are controlled by the thioredoxin system. Recombinant thioredoxin showed an almost 10-fold higher reactivity towards cysteine persulfide than towards cystine and readily cleaved protein persulfides as well. This reaction resulted in H2S release suggesting that thioredoxin could be an important regulator of H2S levels from persulfide pools. Inhibition of the thioredoxin system caused an increase in intracellular persulfides, highlighting thioredoxin as a major protein depersulfidase that controls H2S signalling. Finally, using plasma from HIV-1 patients that have higher circulatory levels of thioredoxin, we could prove depersulfidase role in vivo.

AB - We synthesized three dumbbell-like compounds 2a-c, each containing two C-60 groups at the periphery and pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) in the middle, and examined their electronic as well as assembly characteristics with both experimental and computational methods. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements revealed that each of three electron-accepting (AAA) triads could accommodate up to eight electrons. Computational studies (density functional theory, DFT) of 2a-c at PBEPBE/6-311G(d, p) level of theory, with B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, revealed that HOMO-LUMO energy gaps are similar to those of the model compound [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Compounds 2a-c were also found to assemble into vesicles and nanoparticles on the copper grid (100-300 nm, TEM), while giving more sizeable aggregates after a deposition on the glass (SEM, gt 5 mm). Understanding the packing of 2a-c on various solid substrates, as well as the assembly characteristics in general, is important for tuning the properties and fabrication of electronic/optical devices. On the basis of the results of conformational analysis (MM and DFT calculations), we deduced that different alkyl spacers in 2a-c ought to play a role in pi-pi interactions between the aromatic components of the triad to guide the packing and therefore morphology of the material.

AB - Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a polyglutamine (polyQ) disorder caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the ataxin-3 (ATXN3) gene resulting in toxic protein aggregation. Inflammation and oxidative stress are considered secondary factors contributing to the progression of this neurodegenerative disease. There is no cure that halts or reverses the progressive neurodegeneration of SCA3. Here we show that overexpression of cystathionine.-lyase, a central enzyme in cysteine metabolism, is protective in a Drosophila model for SCA3. SCA3 flies show eye degeneration, increased oxidative stress, insoluble protein aggregates, reduced levels of protein persulfidation and increased activation of the innate immune response. Overexpression of Drosophila cystathionine.-lyase restores protein persulfidation, decreases oxidative stress, dampens the immune response and improves SCA3-associated tissue degeneration. Levels of insoluble protein aggregates are not altered; therefore, the data implicate a modifying role of cystathionine.-lyase in ameliorating the downstream consequence of protein aggregation leading to protection against SCA3-induced tissue degeneration. The cystathionine.-lyase expression is decreased in affected brain tissue of SCA3 patients, suggesting that enhancers of cystathionine.-lyase expression or activity are attractive candidates for future therapies.

AB - Ferrocene-substituted porphyrin RL-91 exhibits antifungal activity against opportune human pathogen Candida albicans. RL-91 efficiently inhibits growth of both planktonic C albicans cells and cells within biofilms without photoactivation. The minimal inhibitory concentration for plankton form (PMIC) was established to be 100 mu g/mL and the same concentration killed 80% of sessile cells in the mature biofilm (SMIC80). Furthermore PMIC of RL-91 efficiently prevents C albicans biofilm formation. RL-91 is cytotoxic for human fibroblasts in vitro in concentration of 10 mu g/mL, however it does not cause hemolysis in concentrations of up to 50 mu g/mL. These findings open possibility for application of RL-91 as an antifungal agent for external antibiofilm treatment of medical devices as well as a scaffold for further development of porphyrin based systemic antifungals. AB - A series of novel fulleropyrrolidine-phthalimide dyads was synthesized and their electrochemical and self-assembly properties were investigated. Efficient synthesis of acceptor-acceptor dyads was performed under microwave irradiation. Fine-tuning of the second redox potentials in the dyads was achieved by varying the length of the aliphatic spacer (C-2 to C-12) between the fulleropyrrolidine and phthalimide moieties. Shape-shifting and supramolecular polymorphism were observed for these compounds during self-assembly.

AB - dTwo lines of Picea omorika (Pane.) Purkyne were compared with respect to germination percentage as well as specific activity and isoenzyme pattern of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase (POD) during germination. Line A had a higher gennination percentage and higher enzyme activities in dry seeds and seedlings compared to line C. Peroxidase activity was not detected in dry seeds, but measured up to 10 U/g and 28 U/g on the 7(th) day of germination in lines C and A, respectively. The most abundant POD basic isoform in seedlings of both lines (pl 8.2) was not found previously in needles of adult Serbian spruce trees of the same lines.
AB - Poređeni su procenat klijanja, specifična aktivnost i izoenzimski profil katalaze, superoksid dismutaze i peroksidaze u dve linije omorike [Picea omorika (Panč.) Purkyně] u toku klijanja. Linija A je imala veći procenat klijanja i veće enzimske aktivnosti u suvom semenu i klijancima, u poređenju sa linijom C. Peroksidazna aktivnost nije nađena u suvim semenima, a povećavala se do 10 U/g i 28 U/g sed- mog dana klijanja u linijama C i A, respektivno. Najzastupljenija bazna izoforma peroksidaze u klijancima obe linije (pI 8.2) nije nađena ranije u četinama odraslih jedinki istih linija. .
