AB  - Polyurethanes (PUs) are an exceedingly heterogeneous group of plastic polymers, widely used in a variety of industries from construction to medical implants. In the past decades, we have witnessed the accumulation of PU waste and its detrimental environmental impacts. PUs have been identified as one of the most toxic polymers leaching hazardous compounds derived both from the polymer itself and the additives used in production. Further environmental impact assessment, identification and characterization of substances derived from PU materials and establishing efficient degradation strategies are crucial. Thus, a selection of eight synthetic model compounds which represent partial PU hydrolysis products were synthesized and characterized both in terms of toxicity and suitability to be used as substrates for the identification of novel biocatalysts for PU biodegradation. Overall, the compounds exhibited low in vitro cytotoxicity against a healthy human fibroblast cell line and virtually no toxic effect on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans up to 500 µg mL−1, and two of the substrates showed moderate aquatic ecotoxicity with EC50 values 53 µg mL−1 and 45 µg mL−1, respectively, on Aliivibrio fischeri. The compounds were successfully applied to study the mechanism of ester and urethane bond cleaving preference of known plastic-degrading enzymes and were used to single out a novel PU-degrading biocatalyst, Amycolatopsis mediterranei ISP5501, among 220 microbial strains. A. mediterranei ISP5501 can also degrade commercially available polyether and polyester PU materials, reducing the average molecular number of the polymer up to 13.5%. This study uncovered a biocatalyst capable of degrading different types of PUs and identified potential enzymes responsible as a key step in developing biotechnological process for PU waste treatment options.

Blood leukocytes reflect the actions oftheir counterparts in the lungs and they can be obtained through minimal invasive procedures as partof the peripheral blood.Objective: The aim of the study was to identify proteins in blood leukocyte proteomes that respond toex vivo treatment by prednisone in order to pinpoint candidates for predictive biomarkers in corticosteroid-responsive asthma.Methods: The study included five children diagnosed with asthma and five healthy children. AB  - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in various industrial and consumer products due to their unique properties, such as oil and water repellency, thermal stability, and durability. However, the persistence and mobility of these chemicals in the environment have raised concerns about their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment. PFAS have been detected on a global scale in various environmental media, such as soil, water, air, and biota. As a country undergoing economic development and transition, Serbia faces the challenge of managing and addressing the PFAS contamination in its environment. This challenge requires a comprehensive and science-based strategy that can effectively reduce the exposure and risks of PFAS to human health and the environment. This document aims to provide a scientific strategy for solving the PFAS challenge in Serbia. Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that PFAS are persistent and bioaccumulative in the environment, which means that they do not break down easily and can accumulate in the food chain, posing a long-term risk to human health and the environment. Therefore, a precautionary approach is necessary to minimize the exposure and risks of PFAS. International experience and cooperation are very important for developing an effective scientifc strategy for addressing the PFAS challenge in Serbia. PFAS are a global issue, and many countries have already implemented measures to manage and reduce the exposure and risks of PFAS. Therefore, it is important to draw on international experience and best practices when developing the strategy for Serbia. International experience can provide valuable insights into the sources, pathways, and fate of PFAS, as well as the e"ectiveness of various risk management measures. For example, the United States, Canada, and some European countries have established regulatory frameworks for PFAS, which can serve as a model for Serbia. Other countries have implemented remediation measures for contaminated sites, which can provide valuable insights for selecting appropriate remediation technologies in Serbia. Moreover, international experience can provide access to the latest scientific knowledge, methods, and technologies for assessing and managing PFAS contamination. For example, international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have developed guidance documents and tools for assessing and managing PFAS contamination. The scientific strategy for solving the PFAS challenge in Serbia is based on a thorough understanding of the sources, pathways, and fate of PFAS in the environment. It is also based on a comprehensive and systematic approach, including risk assessment, monitoring, regulation, remediation, and communication. This strategy is tailored to the specific context and needs of Serbia. It is based on the latest scientifc knowledge and practical experience from other countries and regions, focusing on the European Union, USA, China and Japan. The cultural, social, economic, and political factors can affect the implementation and effectiveness of the strategy, and therefore, the strategy is developed through a collaborative and participatory process involving stakeholders from different sectors and levels. The international experience provided helpful guidance and lessons learned, but ultimately, the strategy is based on local knowledge, priorities, and capacities. By implementing this strategy, we aim to contribute to that Serbia can protect its citizens and environment from the potential harm of PFAS and achieve sustainable development.

International experience and cooperation are very important for developing an effective scientifc strategy for addressing the PFAS challenge in Serbia. PFAS are a global issue, and many countries have already implemented measures to manage and reduce the exposure and risks of PFAS. Therefore, it is important to draw on international experience and best practices when developing the strategy for Serbia. International experience can provide valuable insights into the sources, pathways, and fate of PFAS, as well as the e"ectiveness of various risk management measures. For example, the United States, Canada, and some European countries have established regulatory frameworks for PFAS, which can serve as a model for Serbia. Other countries have implemented remediation measures for contaminated sites, which can provide valuable insights for selecting appropriate remediation technologies in Serbia. Moreover, international experience can provide access to the latest scientific knowledge, methods, and technologies for assessing and managing PFAS contamination. For example, international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have developed guidance documents and tools for assessing and managing PFAS contamination. The scientific strategy for solving the PFAS challenge in Serbia is based on a thorough understanding of the sources, pathways, and fate of PFAS in the environment. It is also based on a comprehensive and systematic approach, including risk assessment, monitoring, regulation, remediation, and communication. This strategy is tailored to the specific context and needs of Serbia. It is based on the latest scientifc knowledge and practical experience from other countries and regions, focusing on the European Union, USA, China and Japan. The cultural, social, economic, and political factors can affect the implementation and effectiveness of the strategy, and therefore, the strategy is developed through a collaborative and participatory process involving stakeholders from different sectors and levels. The international experience provided helpful guidance and lessons learned, but ultimately, the strategy is based on local knowledge, priorities, and capacities. By implementing this strategy, we aim to contribute to that Serbia can protect its citizens and environment from the potential harm of PFAS and achieve sustainable development.",

In general, they are considered resistant to biological, photolytic, and chemical degradation with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) belonging to these chemicals. PCBs were never produced in Serbia, but they were imported and mainly used in electrical equipment, transformers, and capacitors. Our study aimed to analyse sequential multi-stage aerobic/anaerobic microbial biodegradation of PCBs present in the river sediment from the area known for long-term pollution with these chemicals. The study with an autochthonous natural microbial community (NMC model system) and NMC augmented with allochthonous hydrocarbon-degrading (AHD) microorganisms (isolated from location contaminated with petroleum products) (NMC-AHD model system) was performed in order to estimate the potential of these microorganisms for possible use in future bioremediation treatment of these sites. The laboratory biodegradation study lasted 70 days, after which an overall >33 % reduction in the concentration of total PCBs was observed. This study confirmed the strong potential of the NMC for the reduction of the level of PCBs in the river sediment under alternating multi-stage aerobic/anaerobic conditions.

AB  - The problem of wastewater has long been ubiquitous and has great consequences for the environment and its inhabitants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have enormous potential for the treatment of wastewaters polluted with azo dyes. The amount of energy that can be produced from a single-chamber MFC is sufficient to perform decolorization and degradation of such dyes, which are widely used in the textile industry. This study on the azo dye, reactive black 5 (RB5), provides an alternative method through three parallel-connected MFCs to obtain electricity that directly serves for the dye’s electrochemical degradation. We examined degradation followed by decolorization of RB5 using Fe and Pt electrodes, together with H2O2, to achieve the electro-Fenton process. The amount of voltage produced (295 mV), the current density (276 mA m−3) and the power density (50 mW m−3) were sufficient to degrade 25 mg L-1 RB5 dye with 0.5 mM H2O2 in just 2 h. The dye degradation mechanism was investigated using UV–VIS, FT-IR and HPLC-MS/MS. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products was assessed using a bacterial model, Aliivibrio fischeri. These tests showed that there was successful degradation of the dye to products whose toxicity is less than that of RB5.

AB  - This study aimed to determine the qualitative variability of essential oils of mountain germander – Teucrium
montanum L. (Lamiaceae) at the population level, depending on the type of geological substrate. Ten samples of
essential oils originated from aerial plant parts of populations from calcareous and ten from serpentinite were
tested by GCxGC-MS method. The obtained results showed that the serpentinite populations have more than 3
times higher essential oil yield than calcareous populations. Based on the average values for the relative percentage amounts of T. montanum essential oils, it was shown that the sesquiterpenes (34.89%) are the main
compounds in analyzed essential oils. Population from calcareous habitats synthesize twice as many aliphatic
hydrocarbons than populations from serpentinite habitats, while populations from serpentinite habitats synthesize twice as much mono- and sesquiterpenes. The compounds with highest relative percentage amounts in
calcareous populations was the hydrocarbon tetracosane (9.02%), while in serpentinite populations it was
oxygenated sesquiterpene, limonen-10-ol (4.81%). Compounds which were only detected for calcareous populations are: dodecane and isophytol, while for serpentinite populations are: 3-caren-2-ol, carvone oxide and
pyronene. The obtained results indicate a significant influence of the habitat geological substrate on the qualitative characteristics of the T. montanum essential oil. Differentiation of calcareous and serpentinite populations
into two distinct groups based on the essential oil composition indicate the significant presence of specific
chemotypes developed by the influence of various edaphic characteristics.

AB  - The characterization and cleanup of groundwater contamination in hazardous-waste sites are of significant engineering and scientific importance. This study analyzes biodegradation fingerprints in groundwater, 25 years after the accidental leakage of kerosene (jet fuel) at the site in central Serbia. The long-term existence of hydrocarbon contamination and the presence of indigenous microbiological populations capable of biodegradation have been confirmed by the results of GCxGC-MS chromatography and microbiological characterization. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), geochemical indicators, and other parameters were spatially analyzed to provide insight into biodegradation occurrence. The lowest concentrations of electron acceptors (O2, NO3-, and SO42-) and the highest concentrations of microbial metabolic products (Mn and Fe) overlap in the piezometers closest to the source of contamination, due to the occurrence of different biodegradation mechanisms. Based on the analysis of redox-sensitive compounds, the mixed oxic-anoxic processes in groundwater also correspond to the aforementioned zone, as confirmed by the redox potential (Eh) measurements. The results of cross-study analysis reveal further reduction of hydrocarbon contamination, the occurrence of less anoxic redox processes, and the increase of oxic conditions in groundwater. Overall, the results provide clear evidence of the biodegradation effects in groundwater and insight into their evolution under natural attenuation processes.

AB  - Literature data about semi-volatile organic compounds in plants and the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles on them are scarce. Surface modification of nanoparticles may change nanoparticle-environment interaction, and therefore affects compounds in plants. In this research, uncoated and glucose-, levan-, and pullulan-coated cerium oxide nanoparticles were used for wheat and pea treatment during the growth. The aim was the screening of semi-volatile organic compounds from plants’ shoots using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, a powerful separation technique allowing to reach unique separation resolution, and investigation of qualitative changes after the treatment with coated cerium oxide nanoparticles. The results were analyzed by the identification of individual peaks and fingerprint analysis by image processing. Wheat samples contained a higher number of semi-volatile organic compounds (108) compared to pea (77) but were less affected by the treatments with coated nanoparticles. The highest number of compounds was detected in wheat after the treatment with levan- and pullulan-coated nanoparticles, and in pea after treatment with levan-coated nanoparticles. This article reports a successful application of a semi-volatile organic compounds profile presented only as categorical variables and unique fingerprint images for the inter-cultivar recognition. This method may be useful in screening nanoparticles’ effects on different plants.

AB  - We describe herein the synthesis and laccase mediated oxidation of six novel 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP)-based hexahydroquinolines (DHP1-DHP3) and decahydroacridines (DHP4-DHP6). We employed different laccase enzymes with varying redox potential to convert DHP1-DHP3 and DHP4-DHP6 to the corresponding pyridine-containing tetrahydroquinoline and octahydroacridine derivatives, respectively. Intensively coloured products were detected in all biocatalytic reactions using laccase from Trametes versicolor (TvLacc), possibly due to the presence of conjugated chromophores formed in products after oxidation. The NMR assessment confirmed that the oxidation product of DHP1 was its corresponding pyridine-bearing tetrahydroquinoline derivative. Laccase from Bacillus subtillis (BacillusLacc) was the most efficient enzyme for this group of substrates using HPLC assessment. Overall, it could be concluded that DHP2 and DHP5, bearing catecholic structures, were easily oxidized by all tested laccases, while DHP3 and DHP6 containing electron-withdrawing nitro-groups are not readily oxidized by laccases. DHP4 with decahydroacridine moiety consisting of three condensed six-membered rings that contribute not only to the volume but also to the higher redox potential of the substrate rendered this compound not to be biotransformed with any of the mentioned enzymes. Overall, we showed that multiple analytical approaches are needed in order to assess biocatalytical reactions.

AB  - BACKGROUND: Pectin is a complex polysaccharide, present in fresh and processed food as an additive, which also serves as an important source of fiber. In this work, the aim was to investigate in-vitro application of apple pectin as a possible antimicrobial, antioxidant and prebiotic agent for growth of bacteria selected from human milk and infant feces, as well as standard strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium bifidum.
METHODS : All the bacteria isolated from the milk of mothers of preterm and term-born infants, bacteria from infant feces and standard strains were tested for fermentation of apple pectin as the main carbohydrate in selective broth media.
RESULTS: An increase in the growth of bacteria Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and a consortium of bacteria selected from human milk and infant feces was noticed after pectin fermentation. It was found that pectin has a positive impact on the increase of the antioxidant capacity in all the tested samples. A high correlation was achieved, comparing electrochemical with spectrophotometric methods. Antimicrobial tests showed that pectin and fermentation products have slight or no influence at all on the growth of standard strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.
CONCLUSIONS: The results showed the importance of pectin as an antioxidant and its impact on the development of potential probiotic microbiota in mothers and infants. The study indicated a new potential application of pectin as a supplement in infant food.

AB  - Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) have widespread applications, but they can be hazardous to the environment. Some reports indicate the toxic effect of nCeO2 on tested animals, but literature data are mainly contradictory. Coating of nCeO2 can improve their suspension stability and change their interaction with the environment, which can consequently decrease their toxic effects. Herein, the exopolysaccharides levan and pullulan, due to their high water solubility, biocompatibility, and ability to form film, were used to coat nCeO2. Additionally, the monosaccharide glucose was used, since it is a common material for nanoparticle coating. This is the first study investigating the impact of carbohydrate-coated nCeO2 in comparison to uncoated nCeO2 using different model organisms. The aim of this study was to test the acute toxicity of carbohydrate-coated nCeO2 on the bacterium Vibrio fischeri NRRL B-11177, the crustacean Daphnia magna, and zebrafish Danio rerio. The second aim was to investigate the effects of nCeO2 on respiration in Daphnia magna which was performed for the first time. Finally, it was important to see the relation between Ce bioaccumulation in Daphnia magna and Danio rerio and other investigated parameters. Our results revealed that the coating decreased the toxicity of nCeO2 on Vibrio fischeri. The coating of nCeO2 did not affect the nanoparticles’ accumulation/adsorption or mortality in Daphnia magna or Danio rerio. Monitoring of respiration in Daphnia magna revealed changes in CO2 production after exposure to coated nCeO2, while the crustacean's O2 consumption was not affected by any of the coated nCeO2. In summary, this study revealed that, at 200 mg L−1, uncoated and carbohydrate-coated nCeO2 are not toxic for the tested organisms, however, the CO2 production in Daphnia magna is different when they are treated with coated and uncoated nCeO2.
