AB - Refinery wastes generated in conventional crude oil refining processes, or in accidental situations, are complex substrates for treatment and disposal. Petroleum desulphurisation catalysts can also be hazardous refinery waste. They contain various metals, such as cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and tungsten. In this paper, three petroleum refiner’s spent desulphurisation catalysts were investigated. These catalysts were not suitable for recycling and, therefore, were classified as hazardous waste. They were chemically characterised, including phase composition and their effect on a consortium of microorganisms used in the process of bioremediation. Catalysts contained up to 2.26 g kg−1 of total petroleum hydrocarbons, up to 56.7 g kg−1 of iron, 18.6 g kg−1 of molybdenum, and less than 0.1 mg kg−1 each of cobalt and nickel. These obtained results show that bioremediation of such waste is possible.

AB - Concentrations of 10 potentially toxic trace elements were measured in soil samples collected from 18 sites in urban areas of Belgrade, the capital and the largest city in Serbia. Samples were analysed in order to assess the extent of soil contamination and to distinguish natural and anthropogenic input. The results demonstrated a general Zn, Pb, and Cd enrichment in surface samples, hence, after comparison with guidelines, it has been determined that there is a potential risk for human health. In the surface and buried samples, traces of cooper were detected. The highest concentrations of Cr (121 ± 12.3 mg/kg) and Ni (94.9 ± 12.6 mg/kg) were found at a sediment depth of 2 m and should be ascribed to geogenic sources. The results of HCA and PCA analysis supported a natural origin of Co, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni, while Cd, Zn, and Pb originated from anthropogenic inputs. Based on the pollution indices, Cd made the most dominant contribution, posing a high contamination risk in the studied area. Results of Nemerow pollution index (PIN) and potential ecological risk index (PER) demonstrated that pollution by heavy metals in sediments on several sites is moderately intense.

AB - Contamination of soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water and air, hazardous waste such as oil and by-productsarising during processing of oil, pose a major problem the world faces today.Catalysts used in the desulphurisation process oil can be a source of pollution with heavy metals and are thereforetested their chemical properties, as well as their impact on the growth of microbial consortium in the process of bioremediation, which is isolated from the waste of fuel oil from the PUC “Belgrade power plants” and waste motor oil. Weexamined five different catalysts that are derived from the Oil Refinery Pancevo, a metal that is focused attention asMo (molybdenum) and Co (cobalt). The efficiency of bacterial cells in concentrating metal has enabled their high ratio of surface area to volume and highcharge density on the cell surface. Entire bacterial cell is negatively charged due to the presence of different anions. Therefore, the bacterial cell walls have a strong affinity for metal cations. Intact bacterial cells, regardless of whetherthey are alive or dead, as their products are also very effective in accumulating metals.

AB - Pollution of water, soil and sediment with petroleum and its products may occur during the exploitation, transportation and storage and it poses a risk to the environment and human health. Bioremediation is a green technology that can remove pollution from contaminated environment using microorganisms. In this paper changes in the content of mineral oil and the activity of hydrocarbon degraders during remediation process that lasted 210 days were monitored. The results indicate that hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms with high efficiency have biodegraded mineral oil. Based on the amount of mineral oil (decreased for 63.82 %), degradation rates and level of hydrocarbon degraders in the total number of microorganisms, we note that the stages of adaptation of the consortium and intensive degradation phases were in the range of 0-90 days, followed by a slower decomposition phase in the period of 90-210 days.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate the overall dynamics and the efficiency ofbiodegradation of saturated and aromatic compounds – constituents of the oil pollutant, during ex situ bioremediation of the polluted soil. The effect of natural biodegradation was investigated in a parallel set of samples ofthe same soil which was not subjected to the processes of stimulation (bioaugmentation, biostimulation and aeration).During the period of six months, the biodegradation process caused a gradual andprominent degradation of phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, fluoranthene/pyrene and theiralkyl homologues. Among the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), distributionsand abundances of benz(a)anthracene/chrysenes and triaromatic steroids were the least affected by biodegradation. n-Alkanes and isoprenoids remained low in abundancesduring and until the end of the experiment, indicating that the availability, rather than thebiodegradability, was responsible for removal of these compounds. In the set of the samples exposed to the stimulated bioremediation, within thehomologue series of phenanthrenes, dibenzothiophenes and fluoranthene/pyrenes, higheralkylated homologues were more degradable than the lower ones. Additionally, loweralkylated homologues were more degradable than their parent molecules. These resultsare opposite to those described in the literature and indicate that a proper choice ofbioremediation conditions can influence biodegradation sequences of the compoundspresent in the pollutant. Furthermore, these results showed that the extent ofbiodegradation in the samples exposed to stimulation was much higher than in thesamples where only natural biodegradation occurred, pointing that the stimulatedbiodegradation is much more efficient process than the natural biodegradation.

AB - The aim of this work was structural characterization of EPS produced by Brachybacterium paraconglomeratum sp. CH-KOV3. For the structural instrumental analysis of EPS, the following methods were applied: GC-MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) and correlated two-dimensional NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques - DEPT 135 (distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer), COSY (correlation spectroscopy), and HSQC (heteronuclear single quantum coherence). Methylation was performed by the method which described earlier. The permethylated EPS was subjected to reductive cleavage as described by Rolf and Gray. Cleaved monomer units were acetylated. Obtained acetylated, methylated products were analyzed by GC-MS. These analyses were performed on a GCxGC-MS (Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan). NMR spectra of the isolated EPS were measured on a Bruker AVANCE III 500 spectrometer.

AB - Normal supply of zinc to the newborn via milk is essential for normal development. Using ICP-OES, we analyzed changes in the level of Zn in milk and infant serum in the neonatal period (Day 1 and Day 28 post partum) and at 6 months after delivery, in the cohort of 60 mothers and exclusively breastfed babies. Zn level in the serum showed increase (significant at 6 months) during this period (mg/mL): Day 1: 0.52 +/- 0.12; Day 28; 0.59 +/- 0.19; 6 months: 0.68 +/- 0.28. The concentration of Zn in the milk showed an opposite (decreasing) trend during the follow up: Day 1: 4.70 +/- 1.74 mg/L; Day 28: 2.65 +/- 1.06; 6 months: 0.46 +/- 0.36. A significant negative correlation was established between serum and milk [Zn] at day 28 (R = -0.338; p = 0.008), whereas a positive correlation was found at 6 months between these parameters (R = 0.306; p = 0.018). There was no significant correlation between [Zn] in the milk and serum and infants' body mass, mothers' age and mass at delivery. The level of Zn in the milk at 6 months of lactation is not sufficient to meet the recommended values. This implies that in Serbian population, Zn supplementation might be needed in the later phase of lactation.

AB - The mud generated from oil and natural gas drilling, presents a considerable ecological problem. There are still insufficient remedies for the removal and minimization of these very stable emulsions. Existing technologies that are in use, more or less successfully, treat about 20% of generated waste drilling mud, while the rest is temporarily deposited in so-called mud pits. This study investigated in situ bioremediation of a mud pit. The bioremediation technology used in this case was based on the use of naturally occurring microorganisms, isolated from the contaminated site, which were capable of using the contaminating substances as nutrients. The bioremediation was stimulated through repeated inoculation with a zymogenous microbial consortium, along with mixing, watering and biostimulation. Application of these bioremediation techniques reduced the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons from 32.2 to 1.5 g kg(-1) (95% degradation) during six months of treatment.

abstract = "The mud generated from oil and natural gas drilling, presents a considerable ecological problem. Application of these bioremediation techniques reduced the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons from 32.2 to 1.5 g kg(-1) (95% degradation) during six months of treatment.",

AB - The object of this study was to investigate the quality of underground water on the location of heating plant 'Novi Beograd' (Serbia). The examination included a system of 10 piezometers (P1, P5, P6, P7, P8, P9, P10, P11, P12, P13), which are constructed in two cycles (P1, P5, P6 and P13 are located at depth of up to 10 m, and P7 to P12 are located at depth of up to 15 m). Obtained results indicate that the area P5 to P8, as well as P12 and P13, has a concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons greater that the remediation value standardized as 0,6 mg/L. It was also determined that the total volume of the contaminated underground water is around 105.000m3. All of the above indicates that it is necessary to start the remediation of underground water contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and that the most appropriate remediation procedure for this site is in situ bioremediation.

AB - Objectives: Milk banks collect, pasteurize, and freeze/store human milk. The processing may alter redox properties of milk, but the effects have not been fully examined. Methods: We collected 10 mature milk and 10 colostrum samples and applied a battery of biochemical assays and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to inspect changes that milk undergoes with pasteurization and 30 days storage at -20 degrees C. Results: Pasteurization and storage of raw milk did not affect total nonenzymatic antioxidative capacity, but specific components and features were altered. Urate radical and ascorbyl radical emerge as products of exposure of milk to hydroxyl radical-generating system. Processing shifted the load of antioxidative activity from ascorbate to urate and lowered the capacity of milk to diminish hydroxyl radical. Pasteurization caused a significant drop in the activity of 2 major antioxidative enzymes-superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, whereas freezing/storage of raw milk affected only superoxide dismutase. Colostrum showed drastically higher total nonenzymatic antioxidative capacity, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability, and glutathione reductase activity compared with mature milk. Conclusions: Pasteurization and storage affect nonenzymatic and enzymatic antioxidative agents in human milk. It appears that nonenzymatic antioxidative systems in colostrum and milk are different. The effects of processing may be partially compensated by fortification/spiking with ascorbate before use.

AB - The field of microbial polysaccharides is an immensely developing field over the last two decades as a result of its wide-ranging applications in different areas of science and technology. Microbial exopolysaccharides (MPSs) such as xanthan, dextran, gellan, pullulan and levan have been commercially used in their natural or modified state for many years. A large number of these natural polymer applications is a consequence of their excellent physical and chemical properties, based on their capacity to alter the basic properties of water (e.g. thickening or gelling). In addition, these polymers have secondary functions, such as emulsification, suspension, stabilization, encapsulation, flocculation, film forming, binding and coating. MPSs, and particularly exopolysaccharides, have many other novel properties to offer, and the discovery of immune modulation and bifidogenic effect of some of them should provide other applications. This work focuses on the more recent developments in the extent of application of microbial polysaccharides in the various fields which makes these polymers promising and versatile materials in the future, and also in our investigations of these natural products.
