AB - Climate changes are one of the biggest threats to food security. Sustainable agriculture, focused on eco-friendly practices for highly efficient food production, enables greater resilience and safety. This study experimented on intercropping and bio-fertilizer application as convenient ecological solutions for crop yield stability and quality. The experiment was conducted during 2018 and 2020 with soybean and common millet sown in three sowing patterns: alternating rows, alternating strips 1 (2 rows of soybean + 2 rows of millet), and alternating strips 2 (2 rows of soybean + 4 rows of millet), as well as sole crops (control), with or without a bio-fertilizer Coveron. Grain yield and nutrient grain yield response were calculated through land equivalent ratio (LER) and element-LER (E-LER), while quality was estimated based on the concentration of antioxidants (phytate phosphorus, total phenolic compounds, and yellow pigment) and elements in grains, including potential bio-availability of essential elements. Results revealed LER values to be >1 for all sowing patterns, with the highest one achieved in alternating strips 1 (1.38) together with a greater level of all antioxidants in millet grain. Intercropping significantly enhanced Fe and Mn accumulation in both crops and simultaneously decreased the concentration of potentially toxic elements (Al, Cr) in millet grain. Potential bio-availability of essential elements, expressed through the ratio between phytic acid and Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn revealed smaller values in intercropped soybean and millet with the bio-fertilizer. The bio-fertilizer also increased the concentration of some micro-elements in millet grain, classifying it as a highly dependent plant to microbial inoculation. Interaction of intercropping and bio-fertilizer was most pronounced for LER, E-LER, and accumulation of Fe and Mn in grains. These results highlighted the benefits of soybean–common millet intercropping, especially in combination with the bio-fertilizer, in light of enhanced land utilization and nutrient absorption, thus increasing the resilience of soybean and millet under dry land conditions and low-input systems toward stability and food security.

AB - Thiocarbohydrazones (TCHs) and structurally related molecules are versatile organic compounds which exert antioxidant, anticancer, and other beneficial health effects. The combination of UV/Vis, NMR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations was used to rationalize the experimentally observed increase in the radical scavenging activity upon the addition of water in DMSO solution of TCHs. Mono- and bis(salicylaldehyde) TCHs (compounds 1 and 2) undergo water-induced E-to-Z isomerization which is followed by disruption of intramolecular hydrogen bond, ground state destabilization, and 11 kcal/mol decrease in the bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE). Electron spin delocalization is more pronounced in Z-isomers of 1 and 2. On the other hand, 2-acetylpyridine TCHs (compounds 3 and 4) undergo thione-to-thiol tautomerism which also decreases the BDE and facilitates the hydrogen atom transfer to 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH∙). The appearance of thiolic –SH group as another reactive site toward free radicals improves the antioxidant activity of 3 and 4. The spin density of 3- and 4-thiol radicals is delocalized over the entire thiocarbohydrazide moiety compared to more localized spin of thione radicals. Additional stabilization of thiol radicals corroborates with the increased antioxidant activity. This study provides the new insights on the solution structure of TCHs, and also highlights the importance of solution structure determination when studying the structure-antioxidant relationships of isomerizable compounds.

AB - Sustainable agriculture considers production of high quality food and feed with minimal impact on environment. Intercropping is one of the most efficient ways to produce valuable biomass for animal feed rich in nutrients. Intercrop combinations: alternating rows of soybean and proso millet (S-M), alternating strips with 2 rows of soybean and 2 rows of millet (SS-MM-SS) and alternating strips with 2 rows of soybean and 4 rows of millet (SS-MMMM-SS); single crop of soybean and single crop of proso millet were tested. The effect of bio-fertilizer Coveron was also followed. Aboveground biomass was harvested and land equivalent ratio (LER), as well as leaf area index (LAI) was determined. All intercropping combinations increased LAI of soybean when compared to monocrop, to 43% and 84% in SS-MM-SS combination with and without Coveron, respectively. Coveron slightly increased LAI. The highest values of biomass yield were obtained in S-M intercrop for soybean (39% and 42% higher in relation to monocrop, in combination with and without Coveron, respectively) and in monocrop for proso millet. Nevertheless, the highest LER value was obtained for SS-MM-SS combination without Coveron (1.12). In intercrops treated with Coveron slightly lower LER values were obtained for S-M and SS-MMMM-SS combination (0.97 and 0.98, respectively). Irrespective to sowing way, results indicate that 1:1 ratio of soybean and proso millet in intercrop (S-M and SS-MM-SS combinations) is the most promising way to achieve high biomass yield.

abstract = "Sustainable agriculture considers production of high quality food and feed with minimal impact on environment. AB - Intensive weed management is required to meet the growing demands of sweet maize production. Herbicide application is inevitable in sweet maize production, while foliar fertilizer is commonly used in cropping in order to improve crop yield and quality. The effect of nicosulfuron and mesotrione, with and without foliar fertilizer, on the content of phytochemicals (i.e. carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids) in the kernels of three sweet maize hybrids was evaluated. Herbicides applied alone mainly improved the nutritive profile of the sweet maize kernel. The application of herbicides in combination with foliar fertilizer showed a high variability in the concentration of carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids. The significant change in the content of phytochemicals was induced by the applied treatments, but it is also genotype-dependent, which was also confirmed by the Principal Component Analysis.

Pored toga, zabeletene su značajne korelacije (pozitivna i negativna) izmeCu prinosa i sadrtaja ispitivanih antioksidanasa tri hibrida kukuruza šećerca.
AB - The chemical method of weed control is an indispensable step in cropping practices of sweet maize. Application of the herbicides can induce the abiotic stress which affects the non-enzymatic antioxidants in the crops, especially on the sensitive one, like sweet maize is. Antioxidant profile, through the measurement of the soluble phenolic, carotenoids, phytic acid and glutathione concentration, in the grain of the three sweet maize hybrids after application of herbicides, foliar fertilizer, as well as their combinations, in field experiment, conducted over a two-year period, was determined. The content of tested antioxidant parameters was dependent on hybrids, growing season, as well as of the applied treatment. Sulfonylurea herbicides significantly increased the antioxidant status of sweet maize fresh grain, compared to the herbicide from triketone group, without affecting the fresh grain yield. Combination of herbicide plus foliar fertilizer expressed a various impact on antioxidant profile of the maize grain. Furthermore, significant correlations (positive and negative) between fresh grain yield and analyzed antioxidants in grain of three sweet maize hybrids were noticed.

AB - A series of novel 3-substituted isocoumarins was prepared via Pd-catalysed coupling processes and screened in vitro for antifungal activity against Candida species. The study revealed antifungal potential of isocoumarins possessing the azole substituents, which, in some cases, showed biological properties equal to those of clinically used voriconazole. Selected compounds were also screened against voriconazole resistant Candida krusei 6258 and a clinical isolate Candida parapsilosis CA-27. Although the activity against these targets needs to be improved further, the results emphasise additional potential of this new class of antifungal compounds. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Procedure for isolation of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) from Rindera umbellata Bunge plant species was optimised. Different extraction media (methanol, ethanol and sulphuric acid), concentration and volume of sulphuric acid, pH of PA solution for alkaline extraction, extraction time and techniques (maceration, ultrasonic and overhead rotary mixer assisted extraction) were investigated. The yields of six PAs (7-angeloyl heliotridane, 7-angeloyl heliotridine, lindelofine, 7-angeloyl rinderine, punctanecine and heliosupine) were monitored by GC-MS/FID. The best results for the isolation all of six PAs were obtained when the extraction was performed with 1M sulphuric acid (30mL per 1.00g of dried sample) by overhead rotary mixer during three days. Optimal pH value for alkaline extraction of PAs with CH2Cl2 was 9, and the extraction should be performed with four portions of 30mL of CH2Cl2. This procedure could be also useful for a plant sample preparation for GC and LC analyses of PAs.

AB - Cytoprotective compounds such as amifostine play an important role in chemo-and radiotherapy due to their ability to reduce the side effects of these treatments. Our work was initiated with the intention to design, synthesise and test a new class of heterocyclic compounds that would have an antioxidative profile with the potential to be further developed as cytoprotective agents. The design was based on the privileged tetrahydrobenzazepine scaffold found in many natural products with a wide range of biological properties. This structure was further functionalised with moieties known to possess antioxidative features such as tertiary amine and styrene double bond. A series of eight tetrahydrobenzazepine derivatives of isoquinoline, 3,4-dihydro-beta-carboline and pyridine were synthesised employing the Heck reaction as a key transformation. Some of the prepared compounds were tested for their in vitro effects on chromosome aberrations in peripheral human lymphocytes using the cytochalasin-B blocked micronucleus (MN) assay. Three tetrahydrobenzoazepine derivatives showed significant cytoprotective properties, comparable or even better to those of the radioprotective agent amifostine.

AB - The examination of the aerial parts, roots, and seeds of the endemic plant Rindera umbellata is reported in this paper for the first time. Phytochemical investigation of R. umbellata led to the isolation and characterization of ten pyrrolizidine alkaloids and eleven fatty acids in the form of triglycerides. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids 1-9 were found in the aerial parts, 7 and 8 in the roots, and 6-10, together with eleven fatty acids, in the seeds of this plant species. The structures of compounds 1-10 were established based on spectroscopic studies (H-1- and C-13-NMR, 2D NMR, IR and CI-MS). After trans-esterification, methyl esters of the fatty acids were analyzed using GC-MS. The effect of lindelofine-N-oxide (7) on tubulin polymerization was determined.

AB - Double bond migration in N-allylindoles has been investigated as a method to access N-vinyl derivatives of this heterocycle. The optimal reaction conditions employed t-BuOK or NaH in DMSO as the solvent at room temperature to afford the products in yields ranging from 51 to 99%. Although in some cases a high degree of stereoselectivity was observed, preferential formation of either the Z- or E-isomer was not predictable. The developed methodology was employed in the synthesis of (+/-)-debromoarborescidine B.

AB - The aim of this thesis was the development of a synthetic route forprotoberberine derivatives, polycyclic compounds containing the isoquinoline skeleton. The protoberberines are widespread, important group of isoquinoline alkaloids.Due to the potent pharmacological properties they have attracted an attention frommedicinal chemist and drug researchers. Our proposed synthetic route enabling accessto different classes of protoberberines is based on a common intermediate, anisoquinolinic 1,3-diene. The incorporation of ring C in various oxidative states, as wellas the incorporation of additional substituents necessary for the functionalisation of ringD of protoberberines was achieved through Diels-Alder reactions with differentdienophiles and the subsequent oxidation of the resulting cycloadducts. Two types ofnatural products' skeletons, tetrahydroprotoberberines and oxoprotoberberines wereefficiently synthesised using this approach. This synthetic methodology proved to beapplicable in the preparation of dihydro-β-carbolines and pyridines. Alkaloids derivedof β-carboline are important compounds with a broad spectrum of biological activities.Starting with dihydro-β-carboline, through the corresponding intermediary 1,3-diene, ketoyobirines and dihydrogambirtanines were obtained. Pyridine had also shownamenable to these types of annulations, giving benzoquinolizine structures. In vitro cytotoxic activity of some synthetised isoquinolines and β-carbolineswas investigated (FemX, HeLa, K562). Cycloadduct 2.17 shows the greatest cytotoxicactivity of the compounds tested, with IC50 value of 24,7 μM towards K562 cells. In addition to this, the possibility of functionalization of 1,3-diene system in Pdcatalysedreaction was also explored, enabling access to different allylic acetates withisoquinoline and β-carboline structure...

AB - Annulation processes of isoquinoline and p-carboline compounds have been investigated leading to synthetic routes for the preparation of 8-oxoprotoberberine derivatives. The key steps combined a diene formation/Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction to afford the targeted polycyclic skeletons. Further oxidative transformations of the cycloadducts produced the 8-oxoprotoberberine type products. The alkaloids of this class are important natural products with a wide range of biological activity and the synthethic methodology described in this paper could prove to be useful for the preparation of the D-ring functionalised derivatives.

AB - The genus Senecio (family Asteraceae) is one of the largest in the world. It comprises about 1100 species which are the rich source of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Plants containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids are among the most important sources of human and animal exposure to plant toxins and carcinogens. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids of seven Senecio species (S. erucifolius, S. othonnae, S. wagneri, S. subalpinus, S. carpathicus, S. paludosus and S. rupestris) were studied. Fourteen alkaloids were isolated and their structures determined from spectroscopic data ((1)H- and (13)C-NMR, IR and MS). Five of them were identified in S. erucifolius, four in S. othonnae, two in S. wagneri, four in S. subalpinus, two in S. carpathicus, three in S. paludosus and three in S. rupestris. Seven pyrrolizidine alkaloids were found for the first time in particular species. The results have chemotaxonomic importance. The cytotoxic activity and antimicrobial activity of some alkaloids were also studied.

AB - In this paper, are presented the results of physical and chemical investigations of differently treated samples of oak acorn. The aim of this investigation is to estimate the influence of thermal treatment on physical and nutritive characteristics of investigated samples. Oak acorn, Quercus robur, (belonging to Fagaceae family) was investigated in native and thermally treated forms. By subsequent extraction of dry toasted oak acorn (Quercus semen tostum) the aqueous extract was obtained which is then dried in a spout-fluid bed. The content of total polyphenols, then polyphenols unadsorbed on hide powder and tannins was determined by spectrophotometric methods with phosphor-wolfram acid according to Ph. Yug. V. Galic acid was determined by HPLC. The total antioxidant activity (TAA) of the aqueous extract compared to the control samples of pigs fat and synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole BHA was estimated by Schall-Oven test at 60 +/- 1 degrees C in dark, and oxidative changes were determined by measuring the Peroxide value (PV). For determination of macro- and microelements the method of AAS was used. By detecting the changes of PV it is established that aqueous extract was influencing the stability of pigs fat, that is, showing the antioxidant activity. The activity was increasing with increasing concentration in tested samples. The obtained results regarding the total polyphenols content, the content of galic acid, nitrogen compounds, macro and microelements show that acorn, after treatment, was retaining and in some cases improving its functional properties. abstract = "In this paper, are presented the results of physical and chemical investigations of differently treated samples of oak acorn.
