AB - Refinery wastes generated in conventional crude oil refining processes, or in accidental situations, are complex substrates for treatment and disposal. Petroleum desulphurisation catalysts can also be hazardous refinery waste. They contain various metals, such as cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and tungsten. In this paper, three petroleum refiner’s spent desulphurisation catalysts were investigated. These catalysts were not suitable for recycling and, therefore, were classified as hazardous waste. They were chemically characterised, including phase composition and their effect on a consortium of microorganisms used in the process of bioremediation. Catalysts contained up to 2.26 g kg−1 of total petroleum hydrocarbons, up to 56.7 g kg−1 of iron, 18.6 g kg−1 of molybdenum, and less than 0.1 mg kg−1 each of cobalt and nickel. These obtained results show that bioremediation of such waste is possible.

AB - Recycling of electronic waste is crucial not only from the viewpoint of waste treatment but also from aspect of the recovery of valuable metals [1]. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential of using the Acidithiobacillus sp. B2, to solubilize metals (Cu and Zn) from electronic waste. Methodology: Chemical analysis of electronic waste and pyrite The electronic waste (after separating of the plastic parts) and pyrite were pulverized and sieved through a 63 µm stainless steel sieve in preparation for chemical and leaching studies. Electronic waste preparation for the leaching experiment The presence of alkali components in electronic waste is considered inconvenient for the reaction between the electronic waste and the acidic iron(III) sulphate solution. Hence, it is necessary to neutralize the electronic waste before adding the bacterial culture which would generate the oxidant. Before the leaching experiment, electronic waste was dispersed in 0.05 M H2 SO4 solution, shaken for 48 h, filtered from the solution, washed out with deionized water and dried at 110 °C [2]. Preparation of pyrite for the leaching experiments The pyrite concentrate for the leaching experiments was prepared by treating with a 0.5 mol/dm3 sulphuric acid solution (pH ~ 0.5) (solid to liquid phase ratio 1:5 m/V), and mixing with a mechanical stirrer at a room temperature overnight. Then, the solution was decanted, washed with deionized water and dried at 80 °C to a constant mass [2]. Leaching experiments The leaching experiments were carried out with bacterium Acidithiobacillus sp. B2. Experimental conditions were: leaching period of 20 d, 50 ml leaching solution (g/dm3 ): (NH4 )2 SO4 (3), K2 HPO4 (0.5), MgSO4 x 7H2 O(0.5), KCl (0.1), Ca(NO3 )2 (0.01), at a pH of 2.5 in 150 mL Erlenmeyer flasks at a pulp density of 10% (m/V) (5 g leaching substrate in 50 ml solution). The pH of the leaching solution was maintained at a constant value during the leaching process. One half of the substrate was pyrite and the other was an electronic waste. The initial number of microogranisms was 107 per mL, determined by the Most Probable Number method. The control suspension had the same chemical content and pH value as the suspension with Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 but the Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 culture had been inactivated by sterilization. The study was realized on a horizontal shaker. The incubation temperature was 28 °C [2]. Results and conclusions: The results of the effective metal leaching (calculated by subtraction of percentage metal leaching in the control suspension from that in the Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 suspension) are as follows: Zn (38%)>Cu (35%). The obtained results demonstrate that Acidithiobacillus sp. B2 was able to grow in the presence of electronic waste and may be “green” agents in the area of circular economy and sustainable development.

AB - Introduction and study objectives: Lindane is a generic name for γ-hexachlorocyclohexane, one of the isomers from the group of Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCH) [1]. Due to its neurotoxic activity, it had a very wide application, from agricultural to non-agricultural purposes. As a result of its lipophility, lindane can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. The reason of his neurotoxicity is that it can interact with GABAA receptors and obstruct GABA neurotransmitter signaling in nervous system. People who have been exposed to lindane for a long time can experience serious health problems, such as: poor liver function, cardiac arrhythmias, and irregular menstruation. Due to its adverse health effect, lindane is classified as a “pregnancy category C” chemical [2]. It is also one of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that were listed under the Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention with a specific exemption for use as a human health pharmaceutical [3]. The aim of this paper was the assessment of the immobilized titanium dioxide photocalytic properties in lindane degradation. Methodology: Spray pyrolysis method was used for a synthesis of thin titanium oxide films on the foils of the stainless steel [4]. The lindane solution was incubated with TiO2 and exposed to UV/VIS light. Aliquots were taken from the reaction mixture after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours. Lindane was extracted according to the EPA method 505 [5], and analyzed using an Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph (GC) connected to an electron capture detector (ECD). The GC was equipped with a Thermo Scientific™ TraceGOLD™ TG-5MT capillary column (60 m × 0.25 mm ID × 0.25 μm). The temperature program used for gas chromatography was: Initial heating temperature: 50 °C for 3 minutes, then heating at a rate of 30 °C/min to 210 °C for 20 minutes. Hydrogen with a flow rate of 60 mL/min was used as the carrier gas. Results and conclusions: Photoactivity of immobilized titanium dioxide in the degradation of lindane was measured as a percentage of lindane’s degradation compared to its initial concentration. The obtained results demonstrated that after two hours 45.32 % of lindane was degraded, while after twelve hours the percentage of degradation increased to 98.20 %. In this study we proved that the immobilized titanium dioxide can be used as a productive and fast photocatalyst for lindane photodegradation.

AB - Humic acids isolated from the soil of a heat power plant (HA-E) contaminated with oil were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In comparison with a humic acids standard (HA-S), a lack of an intense broad band of the stretching vibrations of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups (3600–3200 cm-1) is evident. The HA-E spectra have a peak at 1649 cm-1, which could belong to carbonyl groups. HA-E are heavily oxidized and among the isolated microorganisms, Achromobacter denitrificans may be responsible for such intensive oxidation of HA-E. To the phylogenetically diverse nitrate-reducing microorganisms that have the capacity to utilize reduced HA as electron donors in soils, A. denitrificans can be added.

AB - Contamination of soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water and air, hazardous waste such as oil and by-productsarising during processing of oil, pose a major problem the world faces today.Catalysts used in the desulphurisation process oil can be a source of pollution with heavy metals and are thereforetested their chemical properties, as well as their impact on the growth of microbial consortium in the process of bioremediation, which is isolated from the waste of fuel oil from the PUC “Belgrade power plants” and waste motor oil. Weexamined five different catalysts that are derived from the Oil Refinery Pancevo, a metal that is focused attention asMo (molybdenum) and Co (cobalt). The efficiency of bacterial cells in concentrating metal has enabled their high ratio of surface area to volume and highcharge density on the cell surface. Entire bacterial cell is negatively charged due to the presence of different anions. Therefore, the bacterial cell walls have a strong affinity for metal cations. Intact bacterial cells, regardless of whetherthey are alive or dead, as their products are also very effective in accumulating metals.

AB - Adsorption is one the best commonly used technique for treatment of petroleum contaminated water. The biosorption potential of waste biomass (peach shell, agro-industrial waste) as a low-cost biosorbent for petroleum hydrocarbon from aqueous solution was explored. Biosorption experiments were carried out using a shake-flask technique with a constant amount of (bio) sorbent of 1 g mixed with 100 ml of water contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations of 4 mg/L, 12 mg/L, 18 mg/L, 24 mg/L, 30 mg/L, 40 mg/L and 80 mg/L. The obtained results show that waste biomass is efficient in the removal of petroleum pollutants from the water solution. Biosorption is a potentially alternative technique for wastewater treatment. Their major advantages are low cost, high efficiency, renewability.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate the overall dynamics and the efficiency ofbiodegradation of saturated and aromatic compounds – constituents of the oil pollutant, during ex situ bioremediation of the polluted soil. The effect of natural biodegradation was investigated in a parallel set of samples ofthe same soil which was not subjected to the processes of stimulation (bioaugmentation, biostimulation and aeration).During the period of six months, the biodegradation process caused a gradual andprominent degradation of phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, fluoranthene/pyrene and theiralkyl homologues. Among the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), distributionsand abundances of benz(a)anthracene/chrysenes and triaromatic steroids were the least affected by biodegradation. n-Alkanes and isoprenoids remained low in abundancesduring and until the end of the experiment, indicating that the availability, rather than thebiodegradability, was responsible for removal of these compounds. In the set of the samples exposed to the stimulated bioremediation, within thehomologue series of phenanthrenes, dibenzothiophenes and fluoranthene/pyrenes, higheralkylated homologues were more degradable than the lower ones. Additionally, loweralkylated homologues were more degradable than their parent molecules. These resultsare opposite to those described in the literature and indicate that a proper choice ofbioremediation conditions can influence biodegradation sequences of the compoundspresent in the pollutant. Furthermore, these results showed that the extent ofbiodegradation in the samples exposed to stimulation was much higher than in thesamples where only natural biodegradation occurred, pointing that the stimulatedbiodegradation is much more efficient process than the natural biodegradation.

AB - The mud generated from oil and natural gas drilling, presents a considerable ecological problem. There are still insufficient remedies for the removal and minimization of these very stable emulsions. Existing technologies that are in use, more or less successfully, treat about 20% of generated waste drilling mud, while the rest is temporarily deposited in so-called mud pits. This study investigated in situ bioremediation of a mud pit. The bioremediation technology used in this case was based on the use of naturally occurring microorganisms, isolated from the contaminated site, which were capable of using the contaminating substances as nutrients. The bioremediation was stimulated through repeated inoculation with a zymogenous microbial consortium, along with mixing, watering and biostimulation. Application of these bioremediation techniques reduced the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons from 32.2 to 1.5 g kg(-1) (95% degradation) during six months of treatment.

AB - The object of this study was to investigate the quality of underground water on the location of heating plant 'Novi Beograd' (Serbia). The examination included a system of 10 piezometers (P1, P5, P6, P7, P8, P9, P10, P11, P12, P13), which are constructed in two cycles (P1, P5, P6 and P13 are located at depth of up to 10 m, and P7 to P12 are located at depth of up to 15 m). Obtained results indicate that the area P5 to P8, as well as P12 and P13, has a concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons greater that the remediation value standardized as 0,6 mg/L. It was also determined that the total volume of the contaminated underground water is around 105.000m3. All of the above indicates that it is necessary to start the remediation of underground water contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and that the most appropriate remediation procedure for this site is in situ bioremediation.

AB - Various traditional and modern microbiological methods are available for the analysis and characterization of pure bacterial cultures. However, for some of them sample preparation can be very time-consuming. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has the advantage of short measuring time, fast sample preparation and negligible sample consumption. With the utilization of MALDI-TOF MS biomolecules, such as proteins, peptides, oligosaccharides and oligonucleotides in the range of 400 and up to 350,000 Da, can be analysed within a few seconds. Recently, determination of the bacterial samples as intact (whole) cells and also bacterial extracts has been developed. Ten bacterial environmental isolates were characterized using 16SrRNA and subsequently MALDI-TOF-MS, with the use of the Maldi Biotyper database.
