Considering the importance of consumption of berry fruits with proven health-beneficial properties, high sensory values and rich composition in bioactive substances, the aim of this study was to evaluate a straightforward and simple procedure for the protein fingerprinting of berry seeds. For this purpose, protein profiles of 45 samples of genuine berry fruit cultivars (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, chokeberry, cape gooseberry, and gojiberry) were analyzed by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis in combination with advanced chemometric tools. The most important parameters for discrimination among berry seeds were polypeptides at 12.8; 15.1; 25.0; 26.4; 30.0; 41.8; 44.4; 46.0; 48.5; 52.3 and 56.4 kDa. Biomarkers obtained from the protein profile of berry seeds proved to be a powerful tool in the authentication of their botanical origin, as well as for potential detection of berry-based products adulteration.

AB  - Quality control, nutritional value and the monitoring of hazardous residues in honey bee- products have become
major topics for both producers and consumers. Due to its potential role in human health, bee-products rich in
bioactive compounds are becoming increasingly popular. This review aims to provide an overview of thin-layer
chromatography methods used in quality control, authenticity testing and chemical profiling of bee-products in
order to help scientists engaged in the field of bee-products chemistry to utilize the advantages of this technique
in the detection and elimination of fraudulent practices in bee-product manufacturing. Recently, hyphenation of
thin-layer chromatography, image analysis and chemometrics support bee-products analysis by simultaneous determination of analytes with different detection principles, identification of individual
bioactive compounds as well as structure elucidation of compounds. Highlighted opportunities of thin-layer
chromatography could encourage further investigations that would lead to improvements in the detection and
elimination of marketing fraudulent practices.

Natural deep eutectic solvent as extraction media for the main phenolic compounds from Rubi idaei leaves

AB  - Upper-respiratory-tract infections (URTI) are contagious diseases caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses. Based on European Union reports for Serbia, usage of antibiotics in pediatrics is extremely high compared to other European countries. Thus, there is growing demand for herbal-based products for the prevention of URTI as an alternative for antibiotics. Due to therapeutic properties such as antimicrobial, cytotoxic, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory Rubi idaei leaves were used in Serbian folk medicine against URTI. Additionally, commercially available herbal products most often comprise ethanolic extracts. However, high-alcohol content makes such products unsuitable for patients’ intolerant to alcohol, especially children or other sensitive group of patients. Due to mentioned drawbacks, proposed study was focus on the development of novel natural, edible, and safe alternative using NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent), as a new-generation solvents that resemble the plants’ intracellular environment. Due to the unique, tuneable solvation properties, NADES are getting more attention as solvents in natural product research.
This study aimed to present the green approach by using ultrasound assisted extraction and twenty various NADES systems as well as ethanol, methanol, and water as control solvents. The obtained extracts were evaluated in terms of their chemical composition by high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), as well as in individual compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry.
Chromatographic profiles revealed differences in chemical composition depending on the applied extraction system. Ten phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, isoquercetin, astragalin, isorhamnetin 3-O-glucoside, apigetrin, quercetin, kaempferol were quantified in Rubi Idaei leaves. Astragalin, isoquercetin, and rutin were major Consituents, while other compounds were found in minor amount. Kaempferol was found in high amount in almost all extracts, except in systems cholin chloride : glycerol with higher amount of water and cholin chloride : urea. Chemometric evaluation was applied to compare the extraction profile of NADES systems and their quantitative composition. Extraction systems discrimination revealed by principal component analysis confirming specific chemical profiles depending on the solvents used (Figure 1).

AB  - The guarantee of food safety and quality along the food chain has become an important issue which challenges the worldwide and attracts the extensive attention. In order to ensure food safety and quality, efficient analytical methodologies must be applied in the detection of food authenticity, origin, product quality control, food microbiology, genetically modified ingredients, pesticide residues, allergens and toxins.[1] The aim of this study was to develop a green, simple, and high throughput procedure for the quality assessment of food supplements using a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)/bioautography with multivariate statistics. Bioautography assays were developed for the identification of constituents with radical scavenging (DPPH assay), antimicrobial (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Micrococus luteus), and enzymes (alpha-amylase) activities of different oregano samples (Figure 1). Further, the combination of chemical screening/bioprofiling and chemometrics was used for identification of target, most potent compounds and additionally, search of the most potent oregano samples. Due to several advantages such as minimum requirements for sample preparation and minimal amount of investigated sample, possibility of selection of eco-friendly and harmless organic solvents, in situ identification of target compounds, multi detection of investigated compounds, and low solvent consumption (200-500 μL per sample) planar chromatography/bioautography is recognized as green technique. Methodology suggested in this study confirmed its possible application in quality control of food supplements.

This article reports a successful application of a semi-volatile organic compounds profile presented only as categorical variables and unique fingerprint images for the inter-cultivar recognition. This method may be useful in screening nanoparticles’ effects on different plants.

AB  - In the current article, an overview of recent applications and opportunities of image evaluation of
high-performance thin-layer chromatograms (HPTLC) in food analysis and natural product
research is presented. The article shortly covers the aspects of specialized software packages for
image analysis, image post-correction, signal acquisition, and preprocessing. Contemporary aspects
of image-based HPTLC fingerprinting, quantification of target compounds, and advanced chemometric
modeling were reviewed. Special attention was dedicated to freely available software packages.
Advantages and disadvantages of each one were discussed in terms of abilities to obtain
chromatographic profiles and perform crucial steps in signal manipulation, such as background
subtraction, denoising, and background detrending. The most frequently applied techniques for
signal manipulation have been discussed and recommendation provided. In that sense, the article
aims to provide a valuable guideline for readers dealing with the application of HPTLC image analysis
in food and natural products research, especially in connection with the most frequently used
chemometric techniques, in domains of pattern recognition, classification, and regression.

Physicochemical analysis and phenolic profile of polyfloral and honeydew honey from Montenegro

AB  - The research subject of this paper was a detail physicochemical analysis of 28 honey samples from the northern part of Montenegro. The honey from Montenegro has not been previously studied in such detail. Differentiation between samples, such as honeydew honey and polyfloral honey, was based on electrical conductivity, which was higher than 0.8 mS cm-1 for honeydew honey, as was expected. Other investigated physicochemical parameters (water content, free acids, diastase activity, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content and sugar content) have shown great similarity for all honey samples. The main interest of this study was the identification and quantification of phenolic compounds using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) with mass spectrometry detection. The results show that honey samples are very rich in phenolic compounds, especially quercetin. Among the 31 quantified phenolic compounds, the most dominant were phenolic acids. The highlight was based on p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid. Considering polyphenolic compounds and sugar content, a high nutritional value can be observed in all samples, with an emphasis on polyfloral honeys, as was confirmed with principal component analysis (PCA). In addition, all honey samples were tested for total phenolic content (TPC) and radical scavenging activity (RSA). The results indicate the higher antioxidant ability of honeys from Montenegro in comparison to some honey samples from other countries in the region.

abstract = "The research subject of this paper was a detail physicochemical analysis of 28 honey samples from the northern part of Montenegro. The honey from Montenegro has not been previously studied in such detail. Differentiation between samples, such as honeydew honey and polyfloral honey, was based on electrical conductivity, which was higher than 0.8 mS cm-1 for honeydew honey, as was expected. Other investigated physicochemical parameters (water content, free acids, diastase activity, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content and sugar content) have shown great similarity for all honey samples. The main interest of this study was the identification and quantification of phenolic compounds using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) with mass spectrometry detection. The results show that honey samples are very rich in phenolic compounds, especially quercetin. Among the 31 quantified phenolic compounds, the most dominant were phenolic acids. The highlight was based on p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid. Considering polyphenolic compounds and sugar content, a high nutritional value can be observed in all samples, with an emphasis on polyfloral honeys, as was confirmed with principal component analysis (PCA). In addition, all honey samples were tested for total phenolic content (TPC) and radical scavenging activity (RSA). The results indicate the higher antioxidant ability of honeys from Montenegro in comparison to some honey samples from other countries in the region.",

AB  - Taking into account a growing market and small number of articles related to honeydew honey, a metabolomic approach associated with multivariate analysis and modelling was proposed to discriminate five varieties of honey. Advanced analytical techniques were used for determination of 20 elements, 14 carbohydrates and stable carbon isotope ratio. No chemical marker has been found within sugar compounds, but several elements (Ba, Ca, Mg, Sr, Mn, Al, Co, Ni, Se) were marked as characteristic of honey type and allow classification of three botanical origins (Abies alba, Quercus frainetto, Quercus ilex). Sugars turanose, trehalose, arabinose and raffinose, elements Ba, Sr, P, Cd and Se, and δ13C values of honey, have different concentrations in honeys of the same botanical origin but harvested in different season. In addition to a confirmation of authenticity in terms of production, the values of δ13C of protein could be a good indicator of botanical origin.

AB  - Taking into account the importance of distribution and transfer of radionuclides in the soil–plant system, especially in agricultural fields, the aim of this research was assessment of radioactivity contribution and transfer characteristics of natural radionuclides in agroecosystem. The measurement of the natural radioactivity distribution was conducted in organic and sustainable farming management systems. Statistical evaluation of the physical and chemical properties of soils subjected to different farming systems, revealed the existence of differences in some parameters. Balanced distribution of natural radionuclides in soil-crop system was observed. Radionuclide 40K was the most accessible to the investigated crops via uptake from the soil, then 232Th and 226Ra. The obtained results are useful for understanding the behavior of the radionuclides and provide an insight into the cumulative deposition of radioactivity in the agroecosystem.

AB  - Background/Aim. Custodiol® is a hyperpolarizing cardioplegic solution which has been used in our national cardiac surgical practice exclusively for the heart transplant surgery. Owing to its numerous advantages over the standard depolarizing solutions, Custodiol® became cardioplegic solution of choice for all other cardiac surgical procedures in many cardio-surgical centers. This study evaluated myocardial protection by Custodiol® compared to modified St. Thomas cardioplegic solution in coronary artery bypass surgery. Methods. In a prospective four-month study, 110 consecutive adult patients who underwent primary isolated elective on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were randomized into the Custodiol® group (n = 54) and the St. Thomas groupa (n = 50), based on the type of administered cardioplegia; six patients were excluded. Cardiac protection was achieved as antegrade cold crystalloid cardioplegia by one of the solutions. Myocardial preservation was assessed through following outcomes: spontaneous rhythm restoration post cross-clamp, and postpoperative cardiac specific enzymes level, ejection fraction (EF) change, inotropic support, myocardial infarction (MI), atrial fibrillation (AF), and death. Results. Preoperative and intraoperative characteristics of patients in both groups were similar except for a considerably longer cross-clamp time in the Custodiol® group (49.1 ± 19.0 vs. 41.0 ± 12.9 minutes; p = 0.022). The Custodiol® group exhibited a higher rate of return to spontaneous rhythm compared to the St. Thomas group (31.5% vs. 20.0%, respectively; p = 0.267), lower rates of AF (20.4% vs. 28%, respectively; p = 0.496), MI (1.8% vs. 10.0%, respectively; p = 0.075) and inotropic support (9.0% vs. 12.0%, respectively; p = 0.651), albeit not statistically significant. There was an insignificant difference in peak value of troponin I between the Custodiol® and Thee St. Thomas group (5.0 ± 3.92 μg/L vs. 4.5 ± 3.39 μg/L, respectively; p = 0.755) and creatine kinase-MB (26.9 ± 15.4 μg/L vs. 28.5 ± 24.2 μg/L, respectively; p = 0.646) 6 hours post-surgery. EF reduction was comparable (0.81% vs. 1.26%; p = 0.891). There were no deaths in both groups. Conclusions. Custodiol® and modified St.Thomas cardioplegic solution have comparable cardioprotective effects in CABG surgery. The trends of less frequent MI, AF and ino-tropic support, despite the longer cross-clamp time in the Custodiol® group may suggest that its benefits could be ascertained in a larger study.

Myocardial preservation was assessed through following outcomes: spontaneous rhythm restoration post cross-clamp, and postpoperative cardiac specific enzymes level, ejection fraction (EF) change, inotropic support, myocardial infarction (MI), atrial fibrillation (AF), and death. Results. Preoperative and intraoperative characteristics of patients in both groups were similar except for a considerably longer cross-clamp time in the Custodiol® group (49.1 ± 19.0 vs. 41.0 ± 12.9 minutes; p = 0.022). The Custodiol® group exhibited a higher rate of return to spontaneous rhythm compared to the St. Thomas group (31.5% vs. 20.0%, respectively; p = 0.267), lower rates of AF (20.4% vs. 28%, respectively; p = 0.496), MI (1.8% vs. 10.0%, respectively; p = 0.075) and inotropic support (9.0% vs. 12.0%, respectively; p = 0.651), albeit not statistically significant. There was an insignificant difference in peak value of troponin I between the Custodiol® and Thee St. Thomas group (5.0 ± 3.92 μg/L vs. 4.5 ± 3.39 μg/L, respectively; p = 0.755) and creatine kinase-MB (26.9 ± 15.4 μg/L vs. 28.5 ± 24.2 μg/L, respectively; p = 0.646) 6 hours post-surgery. EF reduction was comparable (0.81% vs. 1.26%; p = 0.891). There were no deaths in both groups. Conclusions. Custodiol® and modified St.Thomas cardioplegic solution have comparable cardioprotective effects in CABG surgery. The trends of less frequent MI, AF and ino-tropic support, despite the longer cross-clamp time in the Custodiol® group may suggest that its benefits could be ascertained in a larger study.",

AB  - Large amounts of fruit seeds are discarded yearly in different producing industries, which is a waste of a potentially valuable resource as well as a serious disposal problem. Plum is the most important type of commercial fruit in Serbia and seeds could be obtained as a byproduct of alcoholic beverage processing. Their exploitation should be greater and more information about cultivars' kernels and their composition is required. Also, consumers' tendency for “natural foods” arises a need for characterization of genotypes with high phenolic contents which could be used in processed food products. Discarding large amounts of plum seeds is a waste of potentially precious sources of phytochemicals. In order to characterize the phenolic profile of approximately 30 plum cultivars, phenolic acids and flavonoids, as potential antioxidants, were determined by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with hybrid mass spectrometry, which combines the Linear Trap Quadrupole (LTQ) and OrbiTrap MS/MS mass analyzer together with chemometric analysis. The UHPLC-LTQ OrbiTrap MS technique was proven to be reliable for the unambiguous detection of phenolic acids, their derivatives, and flavonoid aglycones based on their molecular masses and fragmentation pattern. The phenolic acids prevail over the flavonoids, with protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid as the most abundant ones. In addition, catechin was the most abundant flavonoid.

The aim of the study was to determine the content of toxic (Sr, Ni, Pb, V, Cd, U, Rb, As) and essential (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Se, Mn, Cr, Mo, Co) metals in the bone and whole blood samples, in regard to clinical means of long- and short-term exposure, respectively. For this purpose, the cortical and trabecular parts of femoral neck, as well as the blood samples, were collected to quantify bone-important metals by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-based techniques. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the most influential metal discriminating blood samples was Cu, while all other quantified elements were present in higher amounts in the bones. Additionally, trabecular bones (TBs) could be characterized by higher content of Mo, Cr, V, Mn, Co, As, and Ni compared to cortical bones (CBs). Linear discrimination analysis (LDA) was successfully applied to distinguish trabecular bone from the cortical bone. Significant correlation between essential Ca and toxic Sr with other elements was found and discussed. This study provides novel data on the effects of metal pollutants on bone health hazards. The results obtained for investigating metals may serve as a baseline for further clinical investigations in the orthopedic fields.

AB  - Honey is a valuable natural product which offers important nutritional and medicinal benefits. Consequently, it is frequently subjected to adulteration either by addition of various sugar syrups or cheaper and lower quality honey, or by mislabelling of declaration. In that sense, product authentication, as one of the most important food quality assurances, is essential in order to protect the consumers’ health and to avoid competition that can create a destabilized market. The authenticity of the honey has two aspects: the authenticity associated with the production of honey (sugar supplements, removal or addition of water, heating) and the authenticity of the honey related to its description, botanical and geographical origin.
Chemically, honey is a concentrated aqueous solution of various sugars, mainly fructose and glucose, but it also contains other mono-, oligo-, and polysaccharides. Some of the most important characteristics of honey include the sugars’ content, particularly the glucose and the fructose content and their total quantity, as well as a sucrose amount. Some authors demonstrated also that the ratio between glucose and fructose, as well as between some other characteristic sugars, is another parameter of interest in both defining botanical origin of honey and detection of its adulteration. Hence, a detailed analysis of sugars profile in honey samples is a useful tool for verifying product declaration, its botanical origin, as well as to uncover honey adulteration, and has been a long-time scientific preoccupation. At present, a variety of analytical techniques have been developed to determine the content of sugars in honey, such as spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical. The current compilation aims to provide the cross-section of the results on sugars composition, obtained by contemporary analytical methods, used in honey authentication.

AB  - Concerning the particular nutritive value of honeydew honey compared to blossom honey, and small number of studies defining botanical origin of honeydew honey, comprehensive analysis of phenolic profile of 64 honeydew honey samples of specific botanical origin was performed. Two advanced techniques of liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry were used for identification of a total of 52 compounds and quantification of 25 of them. Pattern recognition analysis applied on data on phenolic compounds content confirmed that quercetin, naringenin, caffeoylquinic acid, hydroxyphenylacetic acid, apigenin and genistein, could be considered as potential markers of botanical origin of honeydew honey. Spectroscopic and electrochemical approaches were applied for the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity. Quercus sps. samples, Quercus frainetto and Quercus ilex, showed high biological activity and specific chemical composition. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry profiles were used for characterization and natural clustering of honeydew honey for the first time.

AB  - The mobility (fractionation) of rare earth elements (REEs) and their possible impacts on ecosystems are still relatively unknown. Soil samples were collected from two sites in central Serbia, an unpolluted mountain region (site 1) and a forest near a city (site 2). In order to investigate REE fractions (acid-soluble/exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual) in soils, BCR sequential extraction was performed. Additionally, the content of REEs was also determined in stipes and caps of the mushroom Macrolepiota procera, growing in the observed sites. Sc, Y, and lanthanide contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and results were subjected to multivariate data analysis. Application of pattern recognition technique revealed the existence of two distinguished clusters belonging to different geographical sites and determined by greater levels of Sc, Y, and lanthanides in Goč soil compared to Trstenik soil. Additionally, PCA analysis showed that REEs in soil were concentrated in two groups: the first consisted of elements belonging to light REEs and the second contained heavy REEs. These results suggest that the distribution of REEs in soils could indicate the geographical origin and type of soil. The bioconcentration factors and translocation factors for each REE were also calculated. This study provides baseline data on the rare earth element levels in the wild edible mushroom M. procera, growing in Serbia. In terms of bioconcentration and bioexclusion concept, Sc, Y, and REEs were bioexcluded in M. procera for both studied sites.
