AB  - The aminomethylene derivatives of pyrazole-5-one (6) and pyrazole-5-thione (7) were synthesized in the reaction of 2-aminophenol (4) with corresponding 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-X-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde (1, X = hydroxy) or (2, X = sulfanyl). Reaction of 2-aminobenzenethiol (5) with 1-R-3-methyl-5-sulfanyl-pyrazole-4-carbaldehydes (2, R = phenyl and 3, R = isopropyl) results in the formation of disulfide compounds 8 and 9. The structures of compounds 6–9 were determined by IR and NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The reaction of each ligand 6–9 with copper(II) acetate monohydrate in ethanol resulted in dinuclear metal-chelates with Cu2N2O4, Cu2N2O2S2, Cu2N2S4 chromophores. All complexes were characterized with C, H, N elemental analysis, FT-IR, ESR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The structures of the complexes 11 and 13 were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements in the 2–300 K temperature range were performed and the influence of the type of bridging atoms on the magnetic and spectral properties was discussed. The nature of magnetic and spectral properties of the copper chelates was analyzed using DFT quantum-chemical calculations within broken-symmetry and time dependent (TD DFT) approximations, correspondingly.

AB  - Magnetic anisotropy in pentagonal bipyramidal complexes of Co(II) (1 and 2), Fe(III) (3 and 4), and Ni(II) (5) with a 2,2′-[2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)]bis[N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium] equatorial ligand and isothiocyanato axial ligands has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, ab initio, and ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) calculations. The studied complexes display three distinct types of magnetic anisotropy. Co(II) complexes (1 and 2) show an easy plane anisotropy with large and positive D values and negligible rhombicity. The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.

The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.",

AB  - The Schiff base (HLBr), containing a chelating unit and triphenylphosphonium moiety has been synthesized in the reaction of 4-aminobenzyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide with 5-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-formylpyrazole. The composition and structure of HLBr have been determined by elemental analysis, IR, 1D and 2D NMR, electronic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations (6-311G(d,p) level of theory) have been carried out to investigate tautomeric forms of HL+ and the reaction mechanism of its formation and spectral properties. The most stable form in the solid state and in DMSO solution is pyrazolone (keto-amine) tautomeric form. [GRAPHICS] .

AB  - A dinuclear double end-on azido bridged KM complex [Ni2L2(mu-(1),(1)-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) with the condensation product of 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde and trimethylammonium acetohydrazide chloride (Girard's T reagent) (HLCl) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements and DFT studies. In complex 1 intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling between Ni2+ ions (J= +12.0(2) cm(-1)) and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interaction (delta = -0.8(3) cm(-1)) were observed. DFT-BS calculations provided explanation of ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1.

AB  - A square-pyramidal Ni(II) complex (1) with the composition [NiL(HL')]CIO4 center dot H2O was synthesized in the reaction of nickel(II) perchlorate and 2[2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene]-1-phthalazinylhydrazone (HL). The coordination surrounding the Ni(II) ion consist of a PNN coordinated deprotonated HL ligand and its corresponding oxidation product phosphine oxide HL' coordinated via two nitrogen atoms of the hydrazinophthalazine moiety. The structure of Ni(II) complex 1 was determined by X-ray analysis, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and magnetic measurements. In the reaction of copper(II) perchlorate with HL, a binuclear phthalazine bridged Cu(I) complex (2) was obtained with the composition [Cu-2(HL)(2)](ClO4)(2)center dot C2H5OH. The structure of Cu(I) complex 2 was determined by X-ray analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, elethental analysis and magnetic measurements.

AB  - A dinuclear double end-on azido bridged KM complex [Ni2L2(mu-(1),(1)-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) with the condensation product of 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde and trimethylammonium acetohydrazide chloride (Girard's T reagent) (HLCl) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements and DFT studies. In complex 1 intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling between Ni2+ ions (J= +12.0(2) cm(-1)) and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interaction (delta = -0.8(3) cm(-1)) were observed. DFT-BS calculations provided explanation of ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1.

AB  - This study presents the synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity evaluation of beta-aminovinylphosphonium salts derived from aromatic amino acids. The compounds were prepared in the reaction of (formylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium chloride with various aromatic amino acids and their structures were determined by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. All synthesized compounds were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activity.

AB  - Isothiocyanate complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II) with the condensation product of 2,6-diacetylpyridine and trimethylammoniumacetohydrazide (Girard's T reagent) were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated. The structures of the complexes were determined by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structure of the Zn(II) complex was also determined. Quantum-chemical calculations of the geometry and total energy of isomers of 2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(trimethylammoniumacetohydrazone) were performed in vacuum and methanol solution, with the aim to explain conformational behavior and E/Z isomerism of this compound. DFT calculations of the molecular structures and the relative stabilities of linkage isomers of the Cd(II) complex showed that the isomer with N-Cd-N coordination of SCN- is the most stable. Complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II) exhibited low to moderate activity against the tested microbial strains. [GRAPHICS]
