AB  - In this work synthesis, characterization and crystal structures of 1, Zn(II) complex ([ZnL1(NCS)2]), with (E)-1-(2-oxo-2-(2-(quinolin-2-ylmethylene)hydrazinyl)ethyl)pyridin-1-ium chloride (HL1Cl) and 2, Bi(III) complex ([BiHL2Cl4] × 1/2CH3OH), with (E)-N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxo-2-(2-(1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)ethan-1-aminium chloride (HL2Cl), have been reported. Zn(II) complex possesses a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry while surroundings around Bi(III) ion are extended pentagonal bipyramidal. Antimicrobial activity, brine shrimp assay and DPPH radical scavenging activity of both complexes, including previously synthesized complexes with HL2Cl ligand (Zn(II) and Ni(II)) and complexes with (E)-N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxo-2-(2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)ethan-1-aminium chloride (HL3Cl) (Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Ni(II)), were evaluated. For the most active complexes, cytotoxic activity against five malignant cancer cell lines (HeLa, A375, MCF7, PC-3 and A549) and normal cell line HaCaT, as well as generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), was tested.

AB  - Complexes of Pd(II) and Fe(III) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The structures of the Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solid state were determined by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray analysis. The structure of Pd(II) complex in solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Results of magnetic measurements for Fe(III) complex were reported. In both complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. Results of antimicrobial activity investigation indicate that the activity of the ligand is enhanced upon complexation, and that the MIC values of the iron complex to some bacterial strains are not much higher than those of cefotaxime. abstract = "Complexes of Pd(II) and Fe(III) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The structures of the Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solid state were determined by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray analysis. The structure of Pd(II) complex in solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Results of magnetic measurements for Fe(III) complex were reported. In both complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. Results of antimicrobial activity investigation indicate that the activity of the ligand is enhanced upon complexation, and that the MIC values of the iron complex to some bacterial strains are not much higher than those of cefotaxime. In both complexes, the deprotonated ligand was coordinated to the metal through the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen, and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. In the octahedral Co(III) complex, two molecules of ligands were coordinated to metal ion, while square-planar environment of Pd(II) complex was constituted of one tridentate ligand and chloride in the fourth coordination place. The ligand and complexes showed moderate antibacterial activity. The molecular structures of the obtained metal complexes and the relative stabilities of two stereoisomers of the ligand were calculated using density functional theory at the S12g/TZ2P level.

AB  - A cobalt(III) complex with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino) benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate was synthesized. X-ray crystal structure was determined for both the ligand and the complex. In the cobalt(III) complex two deprotonated ligand molecules coordinate the metal atom in a distorted octahedral geometry by chelation through the PNO donor system formed by the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen. The complex showed a moderate antibacterial activity and a strong cytotoxic activity, stronger than cisplatin. Based on cell cycle progression, apoptotic assays, spectroscopic and electrophoretic studies, it was shown that high cytotoxicity and moderate potential of induction of apoptosis are not consequence of interactions with DNA.

AB  - Three square-planar complexes of nickel(II) with the tridentate condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate, and monodentate pseudohalides, have been synthesized. Their crystal structures have been determined. All the complexes showed a significant antifungal activity, while only the azido complex displayed antibacterial activity. All the complexes were cytotoxic to a panel of six tumor cell lines, the azido complex showing a similar activity as cisplatin to leukemia cell line K562 and lower toxicity to normal MRC-5 cells than that anticancer agent. The complexes interfered with cell cycle of tumor cells and induced plasmid DNA cleavage.

AB  - Two novel Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes with the condensation product of 2-formylpyridine and selenosemicarbazide were synthesized. The structure of Cd(II) complex was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ligand is coordinated in a neutral form via pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the selenium donor. The cadmium ion completes its five-coordination by two chloride ligands, forming a square-pyramidal geometry. The structure of Zn(II) complex was established by analysis of spectroscopic data, which indicated coordination of the ligand as a bidentate via the selenium and the azomethine nitrogen atoms. The cytotoxic activity of the newly synthesized complexes, as well as if five structurally related complexes and the ligand evaluated against eight tumor cell lines. The new Cd(II) complex showed the highest activity similar to cisplatin with IC50 less than 10 mu M for all cell lines. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis study showed that Cd(II) complex and cisplatin might have some similarity in anticancer activity, which was not the case for cisplatin and other studied complexes. Effects of the complexes on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-9 and MMP-2 was also studied. Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes and cisplatin increased MMP-2 activity in supernatants of tested cells. while Ni(II) complex with the same ligand decreased the activity, implying a possible activity in preventing tumor invasion and metastasis processes. AB  - New complexes of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) with 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde selenosernicarbazone (Hqasesc) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The structure of the ligand, Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes was determined by NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental microanalysis and molar conductivity measurements. Both complexes occur in solution in two forms, the major tetrahedral and minor octahedral. In the major Cd(II) complex one qasesc(-) ligand is coordinated as a tridentate, the fourth coordination site being occupied by acetate, while in the major Zn(II) complex two qasesc- ligands are coordinated as bidentates. In both minor complexes two qasesc- ligands are coordinated as tridentates forming the octahedral geometry around the central metal ion. The only paramagnetic complex in the series is Ni(II) complex for which X-ray structure analysis was performed. The complex has the angularly distorted octahedral geometry with two qasesc- ligands coordinated as tridentates, in a similar way as in the minor complexes of Cd(11) and Zn(11). In the major Cd(II) complex one qasesc(-) ligand is coordinated as a tridentate, the fourth coordination site being occupied by acetate, while in the major Zn(II) complex two qasesc- ligands are coordinated as bidentates. In both minor complexes two qasesc- ligands are coordinated as tridentates forming the octahedral geometry around the central metal ion. The only paramagnetic complex in the series is Ni(II) complex for which X-ray structure analysis was performed. The complex has the angularly distorted octahedral geometry with two qasesc- ligands coordinated as tridentates, in a similar way as in the minor complexes of Cd(11) and Zn(11). AB  - Complexes of Pt(II), Pd(II), and Ni(II) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaidehydeand semioxamazide were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The ligand and the complexes were characterized by spectroscopic methods with the particular accent on NMR spectral analysis. For the palladium(II) complex, the crystal structure was determined by X-ray analysis. In all the complexes the ligand is coordinated as a tridentate via a P, N, O donor set. The Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes have a square planar geometry, whereas the geometry of the Ni(II) complex is tetrahedral. The ligand showed antibacterial and antifungal activity, which was enhanced upon complexation.

AB  - Complexes of zinc and iron with N', N'(2)- bis[(1E)-1-(2-pyridyl) ethylidene] ethanedihydrazide (H(2)L1) and N', N'(2)-bis[( 1E)-1-(2-pyridyl) ethylidene] propanedihydrazide (H(2)L2) were prepared. Zn-II complexes with both ligands have an octahedral geometry. In the complex of Zn-II with H(2)L1, the ligand is coordinated as a tridentate species in the monoanionic form, building two five-membered rings around Zn-II. Three remaining coordination sites are occupied by water molecules, and in the outer sphere there is a ClO4- ion. In the other Zn-II complex, the H(2)L2 ligand is coordinated in the enol form as a tetradenate species, forming a five-memebered, a six-membered and a seven-membered ring, the remaining coordination sites being occupied by water molecules, while in the outer sphere there are two ClO4- ions. The Fe-III complex with H(2)L2 is a high-spin octahedral complex. The ligand is coordinated in the enol form, in a tetradentate fashion via pyridine and hydrazone nitrogens. The remaining two coordination sites in the complex are occupied by water molecules and a Cl) ion, and in the outer sphere there are two Cl) anions. The octahedral Fe-III complex obtained from the reaction of FeCl(3)center dot 6H(2)O and H(2)L1 in absolute ethanol has the formula [Fe(HL1) Cl-2(H(2)0)] center dot 1.5H(2)O. However, during coordination of the H(2)L1 ligand to Fe-III in water, oxidative degradation of the side chain ( - CO - CO -) and reduction of Fe-III to Fe-II occurs, affording octahedral tris(1-(2-pyridyl) ethylidenehydrazine] iron(II) perchlorate, as confirmed by X-ray structure analysis.

AB  - Four Co(III), Zn(II), Pd(II) and Cd(II) complexes with ligands derived in situ from acetylpyridine and ethyl hydrazinoacetate or hydrolysed ethyl hydrazinoacetate were prepared. An X-ray structural analysis showed that the Co(III) complex is octahedral with two tridentate (E)-2-[N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene) hydrazino] acetate (apha) ligands, each forming two five-membered rings with the metal ion. In the tetrahedral Zn(II) complex, only a single apha ligand was coordinated, in the same way as that in the Co(III) complex. In the case of the tetrahedral Cd(II) complex the non-hydrolysed form of (E)-2-[N'-(1-pyridin2-yl-ethylidene)hydrazino]acetic acid ethyl ester (aphaoet) coordinated as a bidentate and the two remaining coordination sites were occupied by Cl- and CH3COO- ions. In addition, the square-planar neutral Pd(II) complex was synthesized, having the same bidentate as in the Cd(II) complex and two Cl- ions in the remaining coordination sites. Due to their being diamagnetic, all four complexes were characterized by H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR spectroscopy.

AB  - The octahedral copper(II) complex with two 2'-[1-(2-pyridinyl) ethylidene] oxalohydrazide molecules was synthesized from bis(acetylacetonato) copper(II) and 2'-[1-(2-pyridinyl) ethylidene] oxamohydrazide (Hapsox). The complex is unstable when not in solution. X-ray analysis confirmed the tridentate coordination of the ligands in the monoanionic form. In addition, the stable tetrahedral copper(II) complex with one ligand molecule coordinated as a tridentate in the dianionic form was prepared by direct synthesis from Cu(NO3)(2) . 3H(2)O and Hapsox, and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic measurements and by i.r. and u.v./vis. spectrophotometry.

The polydentate ligand is coordinated as a dianionic pentadentate while water molecules occupy apical positions in the structure. This is the first example of a monomeric, pentagonal bipyramidal structure of an Fe(III) complex with a dianionic bis(acylhydrazone) derivative of 2,6-diacetylpyridine.

AB  - The synthesis of two Fe(III) complexes with a doubly deprotonated polydentate of the acylhydrazone class is described. The first complex was obtained by hydrolyzing the previously synthesized high-spin pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) [Fe(Hdapsox)Cl-2] (H(2)dapsox = 2',2"'-(2,6-pyridindiyldiethylidene)dioxamohydrazide); the second was obtained by a template synthesis in a base medium starting from iron(III) chloride, 2,6-diacetylpyridine (dap) and semioxamazide (sox) (in a 1:1:2 molar ratio). Hydrolysis, during which the semioxamazide amide group changed into a carboxyl group, resulted in the mu -oxo-diiron(III) complex [Fe(dapoamh)(H2O)(2)O . 3H(2)O (H(2)dapoamh = dioxo-2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)diacetic acid) with a doubly deprotonated acylhydrazone that retained its PBP geometry. The [Fe(dapsox)Cl].H2O complex obtained in the latter case has a square-pyramidal geometry with an asymmetrically coordinated, but still doubly deprotonated dapsox as a tetradentate. The structure of the [Fe(dapoamh)(H2O)(2)O . 3H(2)O complex determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis in this work represents the first mu -oxo-dimer of a PBP geometry with an acyclic polydentate. This is also the first diamagnetic Cl-oxo-diiron(III) complex ever obtained; this not only points to the super-exchange interaction over an ore-oxygen, but also to a significant interaction between the two low-spin Fe(III) ion d-orbitals. Based on the EPR spectra, it has been established that the monomer [Fe(dapsox)Cl].H2O complex is among the rare Fe(III) complexes with an intermediate spin state S = 3/2, and that a temperature decrease causes it to change to a low-spin complex, i.e. it demonstrates a cross-over (S = 3/2 reversible arrow S = 1/2). Further characterization has been done by IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, and also by measuring the magnetic momentum at 293, 195 and 77 K. The results of this work, as well as of the previously synthesized Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes with H(2)dapsox, Hdapsox(-) and dapsox(2-), have led us to the conclusion that the doubly deprotonated acylhydrazone ligand has a considerably stronger field than its neutral or monoanionic forms. AB  - Starting from Cu(II) and Ni(II) perchlorate and Fe(III) chloride in the presence of 2,6-diacetylpyridine (dap) and semioxamazide (sox), the [Cu(Hdapsox)H2O]ClO4 (I), [Ni(Hdapsox)(MeOH)(2)]ClO4 (II) and [Fe(Hdapsox)Cl-2]. 1/2H(2)O (III) complexes with a singly deprotonated ligand Hdapsox(-) of the acyl hydrazone class (with H(2)dapsox = 2',2'''-(2,6-pyridindiyldiethylidene)dioxamohydrazide) have been obtained and characterized for the first time by a template synthesis. The previously assumed [1] square-pyramidal structure of the Cu(II) complex with an asymmetrical coordination of Hdapsox(-) has been confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray analysis. In II Hdapsox(-) is octahedrally coordinated around a Ni(II) ion, while III is found to be a pentagonal-bipyramidal complex with a symmetrically bonded Hdapsox(-). The previously assumed [1] square-pyramidal structure of the Cu(II) complex with an asymmetrical coordination of Hdapsox(-) has been confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray analysis. In II Hdapsox(-) is octahedrally coordinated around a Ni(II) ion, while III is found to be a pentagonal-bipyramidal complex with a symmetrically bonded Hdapsox(-).
