AB - The external invertase isoform 1 (EINV1) was immobilised on eight differently modified beidellite nanoclays, Modifications were composed of organo-modification with different amounts of surfactant - hexadecyl trimethylammonium cation (HDTMA), pillaring with Al/Fe containing polyhydroxy cations and acid modification of Na-enriched and pillared clays. The modified nanoclays were characterised by XRD, N-2-physisorption, SEM and FT-IR spectroscopy. The amount of bound enzyme activity was significantly influenced by the modification of beidellite ranging from 50 to remarkable 2200 U/g. Biochemical characterization was performed for five modified nanoclays showing the highest enzyme activity after invertase immobilisation. The investigation demonstrated that after immobilisation the structure and the catalytic properties of invertase were preserved, while Km values were slightly increased from 26 to 37 mM. immobilisation significantly improved thermal and storage stability of EINV1. Results indicate that beidellite nanoclays obtained by low cost modifications can be applied as a suitable support for the immobilisation of invertase. The immobilizate can be efficiently engaged in sucrose hydrolysis in batch reactor.

AB - Fresh raspberry (Rubus idaeus), cultivar Willamette, was freeze-dried (lyophilization). A byproduct of lyophilization is "fine dust" of raspberry consisting of finely ground raspberry fruit body and seed. The seeds were separated. The seed oil was isolated and its physical and chemical characteristics were determined. Parameters that characterize the seed and quality of the oil were examined, including fatty acid composition, oxidative stability under different storage conditions, and radical-scavenging activity. The fatty acid composition was determined by GC/FID and the contents of the dominant fatty acids were found as: oleic 16.92%, linoleic 54.95%, and alpha-linolenic acid 23.97%. The oxidative stability of the oil was poor. The induction period by Rancimat test at 100 degrees C was 5.2 h. The radical-scavenging activity is similar to that of resveratrol [1,3-benzenediol 5-(1(E)-2-4-hydroxy-phenyl-ethyl)]. Although this product is used in the candy industry, it would be far more useful if raspberry oil of satisfactory quality could be extracted. This paper demonstrates that sifted lyophilized seeds can be used for the extraction of oils. This process allows for maximal usage of the byproducts, reduces losses and it increases the development of new products.

AB - Domestic bentonite clay was modified using cationic surfactant - hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-bromide) in order to obtain more efficient sorbent. Removal of Acid Orange 10 from aqueous solution at different dye concentrations, adsorbent doses, and pH was studied. These studies were carried out under unaltered pH value in order to prove that adjusting pH as an additional operation in wastewater treatment is not entirely necessary. The results obtained confirmed the adsorption capacity is significant even for unaltered pH. The adsorption isotherm data were well fitted with both the Freundlich and Langmuir model and the latter was shown as more appropriate. Dynamical data were well represented with the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The results indicate that HDTMA-bentonite could be employed as low-cost sorbent in textile dye wastewater treatment.

AB - Our previous experiences with incorporation of polyoxometalates (POMs) ill different substrates have been very successful, because new nanocomposites with better conductive, catalytical and biochemical characteristics have been obtained. The results of intercalation of different mass% of ammonium decavanadate (ADV) in Al-pillared interlayered clays (Al-PILCs) are presented. The Al-PILCs were prepared using natural raw material, bentonite, containing a high percentage of montmorillonite (MM). Synthesis of ADV has been described in a previous paper. The structure of ADV hexahydrate was determined at low temperature, 100 K. A kappa refinement was performed to estimate the atomic charges. A sol-gel procedure was applied to obtain Al-PILCs composite intercalated with ADV hexahydrate (from 2 to 5 mass% of ADV). Structure and morphological properties of the new material, a nanocomposite of Al-PILCs-ADV, were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). To understand better how ADV is incorporated in the MM substrate, specific surface areas, pore structures and pore distributions were determined. Electrical and dielectric properties of the new materials were investigated by thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDCs) and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite was found to increase, in relation to MM, by intercalating with a small amount of ADV. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
