AB  - This study was focused on in vitro screening of the total antioxidant activity of the selected extracts of the mushroom Coprinus comatus and quinic acid, one of their antidiabetic ingredients, by an uncommon electrochemical assay. Indeed, direct current (DC) polarographic HydroxoPerhydroxo Mercury(II) Complex (HPMC) assay based on decrease of anodic limiting current originating from HPMC formation in alkaline solutions of hydrogen peroxide at potential of mercury dissolution, observed upon gradual addition of antioxidants, was applied herein for the estimation of the natural products' antioxidativity. Quinic acid was found to exhibit most promising antioxidant potential (4.0 ± 0.2%µL-1) being ≈ 2-fold more active than the screened C. comatus extract samples. Actually, such a finding puts some light on the antioxidativity of cyclic polyols, well understimated class of organic compounds, compared to aromatic (poly)phenolics. As a low cost, easy-to handle and accurate this polarographic assay may be thoroughly recommended for much broader use. [Formula: see text].

Trametes versicolor ethanol extract, a promising candidate for health-promoting food supplement

AB  - This study aimed to estimate antiradical, antioxidant (AO) and cytotoxic activities of the fungus Trametes versicolor ethanol fruiting body extract. The extract was found to effectively scavenge both O-2(center dot-) and NO center dot (29.62 and 52.48g/mL, respectively). It also showed a good AO activity in the polarographic HPMC assay (950%/mL). p-Hydroxybenzoic acid may be one of the responsible compounds for the afore-mentioned activities. The same extract also exhibited a concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and HepG2 tumour cell lines reaching IC50 values of 123.51 and 134.29g/mL, respectively with no cytotoxic activity against normal MRC-5 cells. Gentisic, syringic and protocatechuic acids may be among the bioactive principles for the observed cytotoxicity. Taken all together, T. versicolor ethanol extract can be considered as a promising candidate for development of health promoting food supplement. [GRAPHICS] .

AB  - The elemental profile of the leaf samples of three Cabernet Franc clone candidates recently developed in Serbia (Nos. 02, 010 and 012) obtained in the last phase of clonal selection was examined within this study by ICP-OES. Optimal content of Al, Fe, Cu and Zn, the metals well known for their links with a number of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, has actually highlighted the potential of the leaf sample No. 10 to afford a novel food supplement of natural origin possessing well balanced metal ingredients. Furthermore, lower content of some other elements (Cr, Mn, Ni and Pb) thoroughly supports such a claiming. Finally, the most favourable K/Na ratio observed for the aforementioned sample points out its likely cardioprotectivity. However, two other Cabernet Franc clone candidates might also be recommended for breeding in the same or similar viticultural conditions, since all obtained values were below toxic ones for human consumption. © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

AB  - The overall aim of this paper was to compare the multielement composition and antioxidant capacity of two Montenegrin Merlot wines obtained from specific vine clones (VCR1 and VCR 101) along with commercial Merlot wine throughout the consecutive vintages in 2010 and 2011. Elemental composition was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Additionally, antioxidant capacity was assessed by cyclic voltammetry. VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, all three wines are good source of essential elements and products with a significant antioxidant activity and specific geographical origin.

AB  - This study aimed to describe quality and potential health benefits of three Vranac wines obtained from new grape clones (CI, CII and CIII) recently developed and recognised. In this aim, their phenolic profiles, anti-2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical activities along with metal compositions were analyzed. Compared with the commercial one, CII and CIII Vranac wines were found to contain both higher contents of total phenolics, flavonoids and monomeric anthocyanins as well as anti-DPPH radical activities. The most abundant phenolics were gallic acid (8.88-16.36 mg/L), catechin (12.42-24.35 mg/L) and epicatechin (4.30-7.79 mg/L). Finally, the metal content of all the analyzed samples was within the toxicological safety limits. Taken all together, Montenegrin Vranac wines represent a rich source of both phenolics and minerals exhibiting promising antioxidant potential. CII and CIII wines can be considered for commercialising due to their high amounts of gallic acid, catechin and epicatechin, significant K/Na ratios and favourable contents of essential metals making them products with health added values.

This work aimed to differentiate selected samples of Merlot wines originated from Montenegro, with regard to phenolic profile and antioxidant capacity studied by survival rate, total sulfhydryl groups and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase and catalase in H2O2-stressed Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. In this study, DPPH assay was also performed. Higher total phenolic content leads to an enhanced AA under both conditions. The same trend was observed for catechin and gallic acid, the most abundant phenolics in the examined wine samples. Finally, the findings of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model were in a good agreement (r(2) = 0.978) with the experimental data. All tested samples exhibited a protective effect in H2O2-stressed yeast cells. Pre-treatment with examined wines increased survival in H2O2-stressed cells and shifted antioxidative defense towards GPx-mediated defense. Finally, sensitivity analysis of obtained ANN model highlights the complexity of the impact that variations in the concentrations of specific phenolic components have on the antioxidant defense system.

AB  - Three Cabernet Franc (CF) clones (Nos. 02,010 and 012; not yet commercial) obtained in the last phase of clonal selection were examined within this study. Indeed, the content of 27 chemical elements in the vineyard soil along with CF grape and wine samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy. The relative dependence of the selected elements in all samples were estimated using correlation matrices. While elemental profiles of both CF grape and wine samples were highly variable among the analysed clones, bioaccumulation factors (grape/soil) of Mg, Na and Sr were found to be specific for each single clone. Applying principal component analysis, the grape clones were differentiated among each other according to the content of 10 elements (Al, B, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and Sr). Finally, hierarchical cluster analysis of CF grape and wine samples pointed out the similarity of the clones Nos. 010 and 012, since they were grouped within the same subcluster.

AB  - The overall aim was to compare the quality of two Montenegrin Merlot wines obtained from new vine clones (VCR1 and VCR 101) along with commercial Merlot wine throughout the consecutive vintages in 2010 and 2011, due to preliminary screening of the potential of novel Merlot vine clones for the wine industry. The same wines were enriched with epicatechin, resveratrol, myricetin and quercetin. Furthermore, VCR 1 wine from 2011 stood out for its elemental composition. On the other hand, antioxidant capacity of VCR 101 wines was the highest one for the both vintages. According to the experimental data obtained, both new Montenegrin Merlot wines represent good candidates for the commercialised wines with an indication of geographical origin.

AB  - Samples of the selected red wine varieties grown in Montenegro (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vranac; vintages 2010-2012) were compared according to total phenolic content, anti-DPPH radical activity, phenolic profile and elemental composition. All the samples showed profound anti-DPPH radical activity, due to high content of total phenolic compounds (R=0.92). The most abundant phenolics were catechin and gallic acid with the highest values recorded for Merlot 2012 (43.22 and 28.65mg/L, respectively). In addition to this, the content of essential elements including the potentially toxic ones was within healthy (safe) level for all the samples analysed. AB  - Background: Three clones of Cabernet Franc (Nos. 02, 010 and 012) were selected in the last phase of clonal selection in Serbia. Wines made from each clone were assessed for quality parameters and taste during five consecutive vintages (2008-2012) and compared to the standard. The wine quality was determined based on the following parameters: alcohol, total extract, anthocyanins, tannins, pH, titratable acidity, volatile acidity, aldehydes, esters and reducing sugars, relative density, ash, colour, tonality, and tasting score. In the last year of the study, grapes and wines of Cabernet Franc clones and a standard were subjected to a chemical analysis of their phenolic composition, resveratrol and radical scavenging activity. Methods: Chemical analyses of grapes and wines along with sensory and radical scavenging activity evaluations were done according to the standard procedures. Results: The wines of the clone No. 010 showed some superior properties compared to the other two clones and the standard; in five-year period the average concentration of anthocyanins (179 +/- 3.8 mg/L) and polyphenolics (1.85 +/- 0.02 g/L) was significantly higher than in wines of clones and the standard, (168-173 mg/L and 1.63-1.74 g/L for anthocyanins and phenolics, respectively). Furthermore, the same clone had a higher alcohol content (13.97 +/- 0.03%) in each year of the study, which indicated that it ripened faster than other clones (13.06-13.08 %) and compared to the standard (13.04 +/- 0.07%). This finding suggested that the clone No. 010 could possibly have a significant economic impact and further increase popularity of Cabernet Franc in a cooler climate viticultural region. It was also found to have the highest contents of aldehydes (488 +/- 1.54 mg/L) and esters (322 +/- 0.71 mg/L) compared to aldehydes (452-467 mg/L) and esters (290-310 mg/L) measured in other wines. Finally, the highest amount of phenolic compounds (1220 +/- 40 mg/kg) and resveratrol (70 +/- 3.3 mg/kg) were found in the grapes of the clone No. 010. The present study revealed a strong correlation of total phenolic contents and anthocyanins with radical scavenging activities (0.936 and 0.929, P lt 0.001, respectively) indicating that this activity of wines was derived mainly from their phenolic compounds. AB  - The growth inhibition of stictic acid, a secondary metabolite isolated from the lichen Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), was evaluated in vitro on three human cell lines for the first time. The cell lines HT-29 and MCF-7 were utilized for measuring the activity of stictic acid against cancer cells, while the cell line MRC-5 was selected for estimation of its effect on normal cells. The results suggest a moderate anticancer activity (IC50 value for the cell line HT-29 was 29.29 mu g/ml) and a low growth inhibition on nonmalignant cells (IC50 value for the cell line MRC-5 was 2478.40 mu g/ml) of stictic acid. AB  - Covering the period 2009-2012, the quality of Merlot wines obtained from three new clone candidates (namely Nos. 022, 025 and 029, respectively; fourth phase of clonal selection) developed in the Republic of Serbia was examined. The following parameters were determined: Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) index, pH value, total acidity, volatile acids, aldehydes, esters, relative density and ash. In comparison with the standard Merlot wine (originating from mother vine), FC index (from 35.73 to 37.15) and tasting score (from 17.89 to 17.95) were higher for the wines of all three clone candidates tested. These findings are in good agreement with the observed trend for the viticultural parameters indicating better properties of the new Merlot clone candidates versus mother.

AB  - This work aimed to evaluate the content of selected phenolic natural products in the wine samples made of three new Serbian Cabernet Franc clones ( Nos. 02, 010 and 012, respectively) and mother vine ( used as the relevant standard) during the period 2008-2012. Compared with all other wine samples, the Cabernet Franc wine of the clone No. 010 was found to have the highest total content of polyphenolics ( 1.85 +/- 0.02 g/L) and anthocyanins ( 178.55 +/- 3.75 mg/L). In addition, its Folin-Ciocalteu index ( 36.86 +/- 0.12) stood out among the examined samples. Finally, the same wine was enriched with ellagic and gallic acids ( 3.44 +/- 0.29 and 27.46 +/- 0.21 mg/L, respectively), catechin ( 135.16 +/- 6.47 mg/L) and epicatechin ( 51.33 +/- 2.33 mg/L), the natural products known to exert significant lipid-lowering effects. Taken all together, the clone No. 010 developed in Serbia may offer new Cabernet Franc wine with geographical indication. [GRAPHICS] .

Antioxidant volatiles of the freshwater bryozoan Hyalinella punctata

AB  - Two volatile samples of the bryozoan Hyalinella punctata (seasonally collected from the same locality) were isolated (hydrodistillation, Clevenger apparatus), identified (GC and GC-MS) and screened in vitro (EPR) for anti-hydroxyl radical activity. The main components of sample 1 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 37.00%, dodecanol 21.40% and hexanal 8.40%) and sample 2 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 30.50%, 7-tridecanol 24.60% and 1-hexadecanol 11.80%) were relatively similar. However, more components were present in the sample 2 (17 and 25, respectively). EPR measurements indicated significant anti-hydroxyl radical activity of the both samples (75.00 +/- 6.00% and 87.00 +/- 8.00%, respectively) whereas the generation of other types of free radicals in reaction with hydroxyl radicals was not observed. According to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of 31 organic compounds from the phylum Bryozoa. Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and ethers of lower molecular mass appear to be characteristic for the volatiles of these organisms commonly known as moss animals.
