AB - The basic C-60 and C-70, and the higher fullerenes, mainly C-76 and C-84, were extracted by original procedures, with p-xylene and the mixture of xylenes from the samples of initial carbon soot, produced in electrical arc. The extracts were obtained in increased and high yields of 6% and 11.9%, respectively, due to application of the advanced procedures. The solubility of fullerenes in these solvents was compared. Chromatographic separation of the basic and the higher fullerenes from the obtained p-xylene extract was performed by continue elution, in one phase of the process, under atmospheric pressure, with original, defined gradient of solvents, from pure hexane to 75% toluene in hexane, on active Al2O3 column, by a new, improved method. Comparative spectroscopic characterization of the obtained purified fullerene fractions and the extracts is reported. The IR and UV/VIS techniques that have not been presented previously for the higher fullerenes were employed as a contribution to better introduction of their optical absorption properties.

AB - The chemical composition of Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. has not been previously investigated. Fatty acids of this moss were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively with an aim to identify its corresponding pattern. A total of eight fatty acids were identified including two acetylenic ones: 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid (42.26%), alpha-linolenic acid (20.32%), palmitic acid (14.31%), 9,12-octadecadienoic-6-ynoic acid (13.31%), linoleic acid (5.25%), oleic acid (2.47%), stearic acid (1.14%) and gamma-linolenic acid (0.92%). To our knowledge, this is the first record of acetylenic fatty acids in the genus Rhodobryum. In general, acetylenic fatty acids vary considerably among different moss groups and have been used as a chemotaxonomic character in bryophyte classifications. Other species of Rhodobryum from Asia have been traditionally used in ethno medicine by indigenous cultures. Two fatty acids of those reported here, 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic and alpha-linolenic acid, have known cardio protective activity, which supports respective claims of traditional herbal use of these mosses.

AB - A phytochemical investigation conducted on a folise lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), from Bosnia and Herzegovina led to a mixture of methylated depsidones which showed acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity (2 mu g) in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on thin-layer chromatography plate. Present results indicate for the first time the potential of methylated depsidones in searching for these inhibitors, which still represent the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

AB - Leucanthoside A, a new allose-containing triterpenoid saponin (1), was isolated from the aerial parts of Cephalaria leucantha L. Its structure was determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Complete assignments of the H-1 and 1 C NMR chemical shifts were achieved by two-dimensional NMR experiments: DQF-COSY, NOESY, TOCSY, HSQC, DINE-HSQC, HMBC, C-13-H-1 2D-J-resolved spectroscopy, and 1,1-ADEQUATE. AB - The investigation of roots of Anthemis cotula (Asteraceae) from cast Serbia revealed, in addition to polyacetylenes previously isolated from the same species, three prenylated 4-hydroxyacetophenones, detected for the first time in any Anthemis species. It is possible that they act as phytoalexins in the plant. From the aerial parts, six linear sesquiterpene lactones (four known and two new ones), as well as two known flavones, apigenin and hispidulin, were isolated.

AB - Two known sesquiterpene lactones, antheindurolides A and B, together with five new related lactones with the same unusual skeleton were isolated from the aerial parts of Anthemis arvensis growing in Serbia. The originally proposed structure of antheindurolide B was revised. This (antheindurolide) type of lactones, detected so far only in the genus Anthemis (Anthemis indurata, Anthemis pseudocotula and Anthemis cotula) could be of chemotaxonomic significance.
