AB - Nanomaterials based on metal–doped fluorapatite (FAP) have attracted considerable interest as potential next–generation antimicrobial agents. In this study, Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by a neutralization method at room temperature. Their structural, optical, antimicrobial, and hemcompatible properties have been investigated. XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption studies indicate the formation of single–phase FAP mesoporous nanopowders, composed of rod–like particles. TEM images confirmed the formation of nanorodes with a length of 60 nm and a width of about 18 nm. Rietveld analysis shows that the Cu2+ ions preferentially substitute Ca2 (6 h) sites in the hexagonal fluorapatite crystal structure. Fluorescence spectroscopy accompanied by MCR–ALS method confirms substitution of Cu2+ ions in FAP crystal lattice with extracting additional d–d band transition at green color from FAP broadband self–activated luminescence in violet–blue color. Antimicrobial studies conducted on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus lysodeikticus showed that FAP nanopowder with the highest Cu2+ content have strong bacteriostatic action on Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain in mediums containing nutrition matters. In addition, this sample in comparison to pure FAP achieved a high percentage of relative reduction of bacterial population for all three species, being >90% in most cases. Fungistatic action is noticed too, throwgh the slowing down mycelium growth of fungus Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium roqueforti and reduction of sporulation of Aspergillus niger species. Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals shows a synergistic antimicrobial effect with Cu2+ and F− ions. Concerning the potential biomedical applications, the hemolysis ratios of the Cu2+–doped FAP samples were below 5%. The obtained results pointed out the possible use of the synthesized nanocrystals as broad–spectrum antimicrobial agents for various biomedical and health care preparations.

AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB - Two new cationic Cu(II) complexes of cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and aminocarboxylate coligands glycine or alanine have been synthesized. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis (C, H and N), molar electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature, spectral methods (UV/Vis and Fourier transform infrared), as well as by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The analytical data of the complexes show the formation of mononuclear complexes with general formula [Cu(L)cyc](ClO4)2·nH2O, A) L = glycine, n = 1.5 and B) L = alanine, n = 2.5. The tetradentate ligand cyclam was coordinated to metals through four N donors. The spectroscopic data suggested that the amino carboxylate ligands coordinated via their carboxylate ion moieties. The six- -coordinate octahedral geometry around Cu(II) in both complexes was presumed. TG-DTA analysis indicated that complex B decomposed exothermally in a single step in the range of 310–400°C. The cytotoxic activity of Cu(II) complexes and the starting ligands were tested against human cervix adenocarcinoma cell line (HeLa), human melanoma (FemX) and human colon carcinoma (LS174). The IC50 values for the Cu(II) complexes were from 48.35–82.25 μM. Both complexes were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and the yeast Candida albicans.

AB - Growing antibiotic resistance creates a need to find new antimicrobial agents characterized by
diverse chemical structures and pharmaceutical activity. The higher plants synthesize many specialized
metabolites as a part of their normal metabolic activity and have been extensively used for
centuries in treatment of different diseases. They have a wide activity range depending on the
species, topography and climate, and may have different categories of active principles. In contrast
to conventional antimicrobial techniques, planar chromatography in combination with biological
detection can be an appropriate method of choice for fast, simple, and low-cost screening of plant
extract for successful detection of antimicrobial agents which can be good candidates for lead
compounds. To date, all bioautography steps such as chromatographic separation, detection with
bacteria cells, incubation, and visualization of bioactive bands were improved and optimized. This
review gives an overview of bioautography procedure from extraction to structure elucidation of
antimicrobial compounds from plants.

AB - The guarantee of food safety and quality along the food chain has become an important issue which challenges the worldwide and attracts the extensive attention. In order to ensure food safety and quality, efficient analytical methodologies must be applied in the detection of food authenticity, origin, product quality control, food microbiology, genetically modified ingredients, pesticide residues, allergens and toxins.[1] The aim of this study was to develop a green, simple, and high throughput procedure for the quality assessment of food supplements using a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)/bioautography with multivariate statistics. Bioautography assays were developed for the identification of constituents with radical scavenging (DPPH assay), antimicrobial (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Micrococus luteus), and enzymes (alpha-amylase) activities of different oregano samples (Figure 1). Further, the combination of chemical screening/bioprofiling and chemometrics was used for identification of target, most potent compounds and additionally, search of the most potent oregano samples. Due to several advantages such as minimum requirements for sample preparation and minimal amount of investigated sample, possibility of selection of eco-friendly and harmless organic solvents, in situ identification of target compounds, multi detection of investigated compounds, and low solvent consumption (200-500 μL per sample) planar chromatography/bioautography is recognized as green technique. Methodology suggested in this study confirmed its possible application in quality control of food supplements.

AB - In the reaction of acetone solutions of CoX2∙nH2O (X = Cl, Br) with methyl pyruvate semi/thiosemicarbazone (Hmps, Hmpt) the first Co(II) complexes with these ligands, i.e., [Co(Hmps)(H2O)X2] (X = Cl (1), Br (2)), [Co(Hmpt)2][CoCl4]∙2H2О (3) and [Co(Hmpt)2]Br2∙Me2CO (4) were obtained. Complexes 1 and 2 represent the first examples of metal complexes of Hmps. All the obtained compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, conductometry, magnetic measurements, and IR spectra, and for complexes 2–4, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was also performed. The effective magnetic moments were close to the upper limit (5 μB) for complexes 1 and 2, and close to the lower limit (4.4 μB) for complexes 3 and 4, and as such are characteristic for high-spin Co(II) complexes. Structural analysis showed that both ligands coordinate in a neutral form in a tridentate manner, via the ester oxygen, imine nitrogen and the oxygen atom of the ureido (Hmps), or the sulfur atom of the thioureido group (Hmpt). The central metal atoms are situated in a deformed octahedral coordination environment. Complex 2 has cis-Br configuration, while complexes 3 and 4 have mer-configuration.

AB - In the present study we have analyzed effects of Ag+ ions doping on energetic profiles of nanophosphors materials based on fluorapatite crystal system. The UV radiation absorption and luminescence properties of monophase fluorapatite (FAP) and Ag+ doped fluorapatite (AgFAP) nanomaterials obtained by neutralization method were investigated using the photoluminescence spectrophotometry. The excitation-emission profiles of nanomaterials were analyzed statistically by MCR-ALS method and number of fluorophores was extracted. FAP lattice absorbed light at 350 nm in the UVA part of spectrum, and with increasing concentration of Ag+ ions new absorption maximum appeared at 270 nm in the UVC part. Fluorescence of FAP nanoparticles was in violet region of visible part of the spectrum, with a red shift to the green region when Ag+ was doped in lattice. MCR-ALS analyses of fluorescence spectra confirm formation of two maxima, at 484 and 505 nm, as a consequence of Ag+ ions doping in FAP lattice at Ca1 (4f) sites. The results of quantum chemical calculations showed that an Ag+ ion is stronger bonded to the binding site 1 (-1352:6 kcal/mol) than to the binding site 2 (-1249:0 kcal/mol). Considering that AgFAP1 nanopowder absorbs photons over all part of UV radiation spectrum, this material might be used as potential radiation protective nanomaterial.

AB - The syntheses, physico-chemical and microbiological properties of the ligand, 2-acetylpyridine-aminoguanidine dihydrogensulfate monohydrate and its five complexes with Cu(II) are described. The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Common fragments encountered in some of the structures were compared by r.m.s. overlay calculations as well as half-normal probability plots. In these complexes the chelate ligand is coordinated in its neutral form in a tridentate N-3-coordination mode, via pyridine, azomethine and imino nitrogen atoms of the aminoguanidine fragment. In these complexes the Cu(II) ion is situated in moderately or severely distorted square-pyramidal surroundings. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and the complexes were examined against 6 selected bacterial and 3 fungal strains. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

abstract = "The syntheses, physico-chemical and microbiological properties of the ligand, 2-acetylpyridine-aminoguanidine dihydrogensulfate monohydrate and its five complexes with Cu(II) are described. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and the complexes were examined against 6 selected bacterial and 3 fungal strains.",

AB - Synthetic paths toward the two polymorphs of a monohydrate, one anhydrous polymorph of 1-carboxamidino-5-hydroxy-3-methylpyrazole (hcmp) and two polymorphs of zinc complexes containing hcmp ligand are presented. By choosing ions which are not part of the final product, it is possible to direct the synthesis toward the particular polymorph. In all three modifications of hcmp, the same hydrogen bonding motif appears, leading to formation of similar molecular chains. Differences arise due to different modes of chain aggregation and the presence of solvent water. Analysis of the crystal packing and the energetic features of hcmp polymorphs is made using the PIXEL model. The thermal decomposition processes are examined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. Analysis of crystal packing in the two polymorphs of zinc complex suggests the key role of the hydrogen bonding capacity of the aqua ligand for the appearance of the two polymorphic forms. In both polymorphs of zinc complex, stacking interactions have an important role. However, the enhanced hydrogen bonding capacity of the aqua ligand influences the formation of multistacking arrangement.

AB - Silver doped fluorapatite nanopowders were synthesised by neutralization method, which consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of HF and H3PO4 and addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2). The powder XRD, SEM and FTIR studies indicated the formation of a fluorapatite nanomaterials with average length of the particles is about 80 nm and a width of about 15 nm. The FUR studies show that carbonate content in samples is very small and carbonte ions substitute both phosphate and hydroxyl groups in the crystal structure of samples, forming AB-type fluorapatite. Antibacterial studies have demonstrated that all Ag+-doped fluorapatite samples exhibit bactericidal effect against pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Kllebsiela pneumoniae. Antibacterial activity increased with the increase of Ag+ in the samples. The atomic force microscopy studies revealed extensive damage to the bacterial cell envelops in the presence of AW-doped fluorapatite particles which may lead to their death. The synthesized Ag+-doped fluorapatite nanomaterials are promising as antibacterial biomaterials in orthopedics and dentistry. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The synthesis of a potentially bioactive mixed-valence Co-III/Co-II complex with 2-acetylpyridine S-methylisothiosemicarbazone (HL) ligand is described. The crystal and molecular structure of the formed [(CoL2)-L-III][(CoCl3)-Cl-II py]center dot Me2CO (I) compound (py stands for pyridine) is determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It's thermal decomposition along with the decomposition of the ligand and six structurally related complexes with formulas [CoL2]NO3 center dot MeOH (1), [CoL2]Br center dot MeOH (2), [CoL2]HSO4 center dot MeOH (3), [CoL2](2)[Co-II(NCS)(4)] (4), [Co(HL)(L)]I-2 center dot 2MeOH (5), and [Co(HL)(L)][(CoCl4)-Cl-II]center dot MeOH (6) was determined by simultaneous TG/DSC measurements. The decomposition pattern is evaluated using TG/DTA-MS data. The results were related to the solvent/moisture content and the decomposition mechanism of the compounds. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and of all the complexes was tested in vitro for selected gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and fungi. The activity of the ligand against all tested bacteria is comparable with those obtained for standard antibiotics, while it is less active against fungi. Surprisingly, the activity of the complexes is very low. The low antimicrobial activity of the complexes may be in connection with their high thermodynamic and kinetic inertness in solution. The results are also supported by the relatively high thermal stability of the complexes.

AB - New cationic Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes with N,N',N '',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and the anion of 2-amino-3-phenylpropanoic acid (S-phenylalanine) were prepared. The complexes were analyzed and characterized by elemental analysis, conductometric, polarimetric, magnetic and cyclic voltammetric measurements, as well as by spectroscopic data (UV/Vis, IR). Both complexes are binuclear with the general formula [M(2)(S-Phe)tpmc](ClO(4))(3)center dot nH(2)O; S-PheH = S-phenylalanine, M(II) = Cu, n = 7; Co, n = 0. Based on previously reported data for some familiar complexes and the present results, pentacoordinated geometry was proposed. Both of the central metal ions are coordinated with two pyridyl and two cyclam nitrogens and bridged with -N-(CH(2))(3)-N-portions of the cyclam ring and oxygen atoms of the S-phenylalaninate ion. Antimicrobial screening of the complexes, solvent, starting salts and ligands alone was performed against fungi, mould and some bacteria. In certain cases, enhanced activity of Co(II) complex towards bacteria compared with the relevant free ligands and starting salts was detected.
AB - Dobijena su dva nova kompleksa Cu(II) i Co(II) sa N,N',N',N'''-tetrakis(2-piridilmetil)-1,4,8,11-ciklotetradekanom (tpmc-om) i anjonom 2-amino-3-fenil-propanske kiseline (S-fenilalanina). Oni su analizirani i okarakterisani: elementalnom analizom, konduktometrijskim, polarimetrijskim, magnetnim i ciklično-voltametrijskim merenjima, kao i spektroskopskim podacima (UV/Vis, IR). Oba kompleksa su dinuklearna opšte formule [M2(S-Phe)tpmc](ClO4)3·nH2O; S-PheH = S-fenilalanin, M(II) = Cu, n = 7; Co, n = 0.

AB - Four new air-stable mixed-ligand Co(II) complexes having the general formula [Co(2)(Y)tpmc]Z(3)center dot q(H(2)O/CH(3)CN) (HY = N-methylglycine/N,N-dimethylglycine, Z = BF(4)(-), qH(2)O = 4 or 3; HY = S-norvaline/S-valine Z = ClO(4)(-), qCH(3)CN = 0.5; qH(2)O = 0.5; tpmc = N,N',N '',N'"-tetrakis(2-pyridymethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) were prepared. The composition, some physical and chemical properties and their tentative geometries were evaluated based on elemental analysis (C, H, N), conductometric and magnetic measurernents, spectroscopic data (UV/Vis, IR) and cyclic voltammetry. The data were compared with earlier described analogous complexes containing the macrocyclic ligand and aliphatic aminocarboxylates. It is assumed that all complexes are binuclear with an exo coordination mode of the octaazarnacrocyclic pendant ligand in the boat conformation. In addition, two -N-(CH(2))(2)-N- portions of the cyclam ring within the tpmc ligand and Co(II) ions in the high-spin state are most probably bridged via oxygen atoms from the anion of the aminocarboxylate/derivatives, whereas nitrogen atoms rest uncoordinated. In all cases, a combined chelate-bridged coordination is proposed as the most probable. The complexes were electrochemically stable in the potential range -1.0 to 1.0 V. They were also preliminary assayed toward some microorganisms together with the ligands, starting simple salts and solvents as test substances. In some cases, certain antimicrobial activity of the complexes was detected.

AB - Saturated aqueous solutions of 28 different salts have been studied as a potential mobile phases for salting-out thin-layer chromatography, on silica gel, of a series of four mixed bis-aminocarboxylato cobalt(III) complexes. In addition, by linear regression analysis of chromatographic data obtained for fifteen mixed aminocarboxylato Co(III) complexes (four series) with solutions of ammonium chloride, three alkali metal chlorides, and four alkaline earth metal chlorides, four linear dependences previously established on different adsorbents with (NH4)(2)SO4 solutions were confirmed. The qualities of the separations achieved with the salts were compared and Li+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ chlorides are proposed as the most suitable.

AB - Silica gel impregnated with poly(ethylene glycol) of different molecular mass (400, 1000, 1540, 4000, and 5500) was investigated for salting-out thin-layer chromatography of 15 mixed aminocarboxylato Co(III) complexes using eight ammonium sulphate solutions as mobile phases. Regularities established earlier for non-impregnated adsorbents are also valid in this work. Poly(ethylene glycol) of high molecular mass increases the hydrophobicity of the adsorbent. Positive linear dependence of R-M values and of salting-out efficiency on average poly(ethylene glycol) molecular mass was usually observed. In contrast with non-impregnated silica gel, separation was achieved between complexes with the smallest hydrocarbon groups.
