Variation of nutrients in plums organically grown in Norway

AB  - European plum (Prunus domestica L.) is one the most important temperate fruit species,
especially in Europe and southwest Asia. Plums are considered as a functional food because
of the high content of bioactive compounds such as dietary fiber, sugars, phenolic
compounds, and minerals. Plum production in Norway is located in the fjord districts of the
In most cases, levels of nutrients are altered by the genotype, cultivation techniques and preharvest
conditions. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate influence of
geographical and botanical origin on chemical composition of organic cultivated Norwegian
plum fruits. Besides aroma, fruit color and firmness, sugar content is one of the main traits
that influence fruit taste and one of the main benchmarks. A total of eight sugars and two
sugar alcohols were quantified in 30 investigated plum samples. The most abundant sugar in
all tested samples was glucose, followed by fructose and sucrose. Significant differences in
the content of sugars and sugar alcohols were found among the examined samples. In
investigated plum, 24 mineral elements were determined. Four macro-elements were
quantified in larger amounts: potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. Dominant
mineral in all investigated plums was K (10922 45002 mg kg-1). The contents of toxic
elements (mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium) were below the limit of quantification
(allowable concentration). These findings could be useful as a reference for selecting the
plum and cultivar breeding for each location.

The content of rutin and quercetin in the flower was also determined to check the quality of the herbal drug used, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the extraction.ResultsThe extraction of rutin and quercetin, in a honey sample using 10% of the Sophora flower, stored at room temperature, for 40 days, was the most intense one (150.24 mg/kg of rutin and 1338.93 mg/kg of quercetin). Sophora flower corresponds to the pharmacopoeia requirements for the quality of an herbal drug. The concentrations of rutin and quercetin in acacia honey were 0.08 and 0.14 mg/kg, respectively. Nutraceutical properties and phytochemical characterization of wild Serbian fruits

AB  - Wild fruits grown in Serbia, i.e., elderberry (Sambucus nigra), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), and blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), are rich in secondary metabolites. In this study, the polyphenolic composition of wild fruit extracts and their antioxidant capacity were investigated by in vitro assays. Elderberry was characterized by the presence of arbutin (a skin protector), and cornelian cherry by syringic and gallic acids. In blackthorn, at least 11 different phenolic compounds were reported for the first time, including vanillic acid and naringin, the metabolite present in the highest amount. Blackthorn extracts were the richest in polyphenols (11.24–18.70 g GAE/kg FW) and had the highest activity in the DPPH radical test (180.93–267.11 mMTE/mL), while cornelian cherry extracts showed the most effective ferric ion chelating (81.37–90.66%) and antityrosinase inhibition capacities (21.75–74.23%). No sample was able to scavenge NO. Using the principal component analysis, wild fruit samples were classified into four separate clusters due to distinctive phenolic profiles and antioxidant capacity. Our investigation showed how every fruit could be considered unique in terms of its phytonutrient content. Thus, Serbian wild fruits may be a great source of bioactive natural compounds and could be therefore considered particularly useful in food supplement production. Particularly, as a source of natural antioxidants, these species could be used to extend the shelf life of food products and replace synthetic antioxidants, avoiding potential health risks and toxicity.

AB  - Background of the study – Among fruits, berry fruits contain a very large complex of chemical compounds that are responsible for their antioxidant properties. As far as we know there is no data available from cyclic voltammetry studies of berry fruits. Objectives – The first objective of the present work was to investigate the electrochemical properties of antioxidants present in four types of berry fruits: strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and red raspberries. The second objective was to establish the correlation between antioxidant capacities obtained from cyclic voltammograms with those obtained using spectrophotometric techniques. Methods – Evaluation of antioxidant activity of 15 berry samples (strawberry, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry) has been carried out using cyclic voltammetry (CV). CVs were taken in the potential range between 0 mV and 800 mV with a scan rate of 100 mV s-1. Results – A pronounced anodic current peak observed between 0.524 V and 0.540 V in all analyzed berry samples can be ascribed to anthocyanins, which are the major contributors to the antioxidant capacity of investigated berries. Results obtained from CVs were compared with those obtained by using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and RP assays. ACI parameters were determined for each berry sample by assigning all the assays an equal weight. According to obtained results, the highest ACI had blueberry samples, followed by blackberry, raspberry and strawberry samples. Also, high positive correlations were found between antioxidant capacities deduced from CVs with those obtained using FRAP (R2 = 0.8630, p = 0.0006), RP (R2 = 0.7426, p = 0.0004), DPPH (R2 = 0.7680, p = 0.0001) and ABTS (R2 = 0.8710, p = 0.000002). In addition, high positive correlations were also found between total phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and CV antioxidant capacity (R2 = 0.8091, p = 0.0005; R2 = 0.8341, p = 0.0002; R2 = 0.7163, p = 0.0007), respectively. Conclusion – Obtained results showed that the cyclic voltammetry is a suitable method for the determination of the reducing capacity based on the electrochemical properties of compounds under the test.

Also, high positive correlations were found between antioxidant capacities deduced from CVs with those obtained using FRAP (R2 = 0.8630, p = 0.0006), RP (R2 = 0.7426, p = 0.0004), DPPH (R2 = 0.7680, p = 0.0001) and ABTS (R2 = 0.8710, p = 0.000002). In addition, high positive correlations were also found between total phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and CV antioxidant capacity (R2 = 0.8091, p = 0.0005; R2 = 0.8341, p = 0.0002; R2 = 0.7163, p = 0.0007), respectively. Conclusion – Obtained results showed that the cyclic voltammetry is a suitable method for the determination of the reducing capacity based on the electrochemical properties of compounds under the test.",
