AB - We examined essential oils (EOs) of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and Thuja plicata (Cupressaceae), their antifeedant activity on Lymanthria dispar larvae and their antimicrobial activity. Studies of EOs showed that these two conifer species differed both in content of terpene classes and the major compounds. Total monoterpenes strongly dominated in T. plicata (96.4%), while C. lawsoniana was rich in both mono- and sesquiterpenes (40.8% and 30.3%, respectively) as well as in diterpenes (19.1%). The most dominant compounds of C. lawsoniana EO were: limonene (16.7%), oplopanonyl acetate (14.5%), beyerene (10.1%), and 13-epi-dolabradiene (6.7%). The dominant compound of T. plicata EOs was α-thujone (76.9%), followed by relatively small amounts of β- thujone (5.3%), sabinene (4.5%) and terpinene-4-ol (3.2%). The difference in EO compositions of the conifers was reflected on Lymantria dispar larvae performance. Larvae fed on the leaf discs treated by C. lawsoniana EO had a slight phagostimulatory effect at lower concentration shown by higher relative rate of food consumption and relative growth rate than the larvae in the control group. Contrastingly, leaf discs treated with EO of T. plicata EO had an antifeedant effect and lower relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate RGR than the larvae in the control group. Both tested EOs influenced substantially the colony growth of the subjected Phytophthora plurivora and P. quercina. Namely, 100% inhibitory effect was recorded at concentration of 0.1% in the case of C. lawsoniana EO, whereas of T. plicata colonies did not grow at 0.5% concentration. The implications of these findings and possibility of using the tested EOs in further experiments in vitro and in vivo are discussed.

AB - Ruthenium complexes are of significant interest in the treatment of malignancies. Ru(II)
complexes with N-alkylphenothiazines (chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine, and thioridazine)
were used in the study of possible apoptosis pathways in K562 cells.
Spectrophotometrically extracellular LDH was quantified and immunochemical expression
of COX-2, t-JNK, p-JNK and -actin after SDS electrophoresis was determined. The
Ru(II) complex with trifluoperazine at a concentration of 10 μM reduced t-JNK
expression, inhibited COX-2 by about 42%, significantly increased the amount of
extracellular LDH compared to the untreated K562 cells and thus confirmed apoptosis.
netretirane K562 ćelije i time potvrdjuje apoptozu ovih ćelija.

AB - Phytochemistry deals with the study of secondary metabolites produced by plants that synthesize these compounds for many reasons, including their own protection against attack of herbivores and plant diseases. Secondary metabolites are believed to represent plant adaptation to various environmental factors and that they enabled the survival of the species. Secondary metabolites of plants can have curative or toxic effects in humans and animals. Herbal medicine has a long tradition in folk medicine and until the early 20th century, when synthetic organic chemistry began to develop, plants were the main source of medicines. The two basic goals of our phytochemical research are: isolation and identification of new (biologically active) compounds ? potential drugs, and chemotaxonomy (chemosystematics). In the following text through one selected example, the genus Amphoricarpos Vis., our phytochemical research is shown on both aspects.

AB - In a cage experiment, lithium chloride (LiCl) and lithium citrate hydrate (Li-cit) were tested
for varroacidal efficacy and impact on bees. Treatment with Li-cit (4, 7.5, 10, and 25mM)
resulted in 100% varroacidal efficacy and 100% bee survival. Due to better results in the
cage experiment, Li-cit was further tested in field experiments on full-sized free-flying colonies
treated three times in 6-day intervals. All the concentrations of Li-cit in the field
experiment (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25mM) expressed high varroacidal efficacy: 93.2–95.5%, significantly
(p<0.01) greater than in the negative and positive (amitraz-treated) controls.
Lithium residues in honey from brood chambers were much higher nine months after the
last treatment (169.3–1756.0 lg/kg) than seven days post-treatment (19.2–27.8 lg/kg). In
honey from honey chambers (eligible for human consumption), the average lithium residues
were 26.9 lg/kg and 33.7 lg/kg seven days after the last treatment. In wax combs
taken from the brood chamber nine months post-treatment, lithium residues ranged from
410 lg/kg to 2314 mg/kg, without significant differences from the negative control.
Lithium residues in wax matrices seven days after the last treatment were in a narrow
range of 234.3–300 mg/kg, in wax combs and cappings being significantly lower than in
commercial wax foundations. For the first time, Li-cit proved to be effective against
Varroa destructor under field conditions.
