AB - Hydroxyapatite attracts great attention as hard tissues implant material for bones and teeth. Its application in reconstructive medicine depends on its biocompatibility, which is in a function of composition and surface properties. The insertion of a protein element in the composition of implants can improve the cell adhesion and the osseointegration. Having this in mind, the proposal of this work was to develop L-alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and to study their biocompatibility. Two L-alanine sources and three grafting methods were used for hydroxyapatite surface functionalization. The efficiency of grafting was determined based on X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated the formation of hydroxyapatite with 8–25 wt% of organic content, depending on the grafting method. Protein adsorption, cell adhesion, and viability studies were carried out to evaluate biological properties of grafted materials. The viability of MG-63 human osteoblastic cells following 24 h incubation with the alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite samples is well preserved, being in all cases above the viability of cells incubated with hydroxyapatite. The alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite prepared in situ and by simple mixture showed higher protein adsorption and cell adhesion, respectively, indicating their potential toward use in regenerative medicine.

AB - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at
low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in
the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication.
The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a
thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology,
it is concluded that the transition from a to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization
process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in
the newly formed b phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds
are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence
of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is
superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB - Novel macroporous copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate with mean pore size diameters ranging from 150 to 310 nm were synthesized by dispersion polymerization and modified with ethylenediamine. The glutaraldehyde and periodate method were employed to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) onto these carriers. The activity of the immobilized enzyme was greatly affected by the pore size of the carrier. The highest specific activities of 9.65 and 8.94 U/g of dry weight were obtained for HRP immobilized by the periodate-route onto poly(GMA‐co‐EGDMA) carriers with pore size diameters of 234 and 297 nm, respectively. Stability studies showed an improved operational stability of immobilized peroxidase at 65 °C and in an organic solvent. HRP immobilized on a copolymer with a pore size of 234 nm, showing the highest specific activity and good stability, had higher activities at almost all pH values than the native enzyme and the increased Km value for pyrogallol oxidation. Immobilized HRP retained 80% of its original activity after five consecutive cycles of the pyrogallol oxidation and 98% of its initial activity in a storage stability study. Enzyme immobilized onto the macroporous copolymer with the pore size diameter of 234 nm showed a substantial degree of phenol removal achieved by immobilized peroxidase.

AB - Rhenium complexes merit particular attention in the area of metallodrug design due to rhenium’s broad spectrum of oxidation states and consequently, the possibility to design compounds of a great structural diversity. Thus, the synthesis, chemical characterization and antitumor activity in vitro of the three Re(V) complexes is described. Novel compounds were obtained via reaction of [ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with corresponding ligands (pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 3-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid and 6-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid) in acetonitrile at 78 °C for 3h. The complexes were fully characterized using NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. Their octahedral geometry with bidentate NO ligand was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Antiproliferative effect was determined by MTT assay and only the complex with pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (1) showed dose-dependent cytotoxic potential, particularly toward triple-negative breast adenocarcinoma cells MDA-MB-231 with IC50 68.90 ± 1.73 µM and pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells PANC-1 with IC50 69.8 ± 2.3 µM. Drug combination studies in PANC-1 cells with 1 and Verapamil hydrochloride (VRP) showed slight arrest of cell cycle in the S phase and also it increase its antiproliferative potential to IC50 51.4 ± 2.8 μM. Part of the research included a depletion of the glutathione (GSH) level by L-buthionine-sulfoximine (L-BSO) at sub-toxic concentrations (100 μM) in PANC-1 cells which caused an increase of activity of 1 to the IC50 57.67 ± 6.51 μM.

AB - Discover a new class of ruthenium-based complexes that were investigated as potential antimicrobial agents: dinuclear polypyridil ruthenium(II) complexes exhibited excellent growth inhibition, and Ru(II) arene complexes with acetyl pyridine ligands exhibited moderate antimicrobial activity in the panel of bacteria1. Here we have synthesized 14 new Ru(II) arene complexes with pyridine-based ligands and examined their antimicrobial potency, trying to correlate their structure and biological activity. Reported complexes were obtained in a reaction of [Ru(η6-benzene)Cl(μ-Cl)]2 or [Ru(η6-toluene)Cl(μ-Cl)]2 with halogen derivatives of picolinic acid or pyridine dicarboxylic acids in a 1:2 molar ratio in ethanol. The complexes were soluble in DMSO and water. Their structural characterization included IR and NMR spectroscopy and MS spectrometry, and purity was confirmed by elemental analysis. In this report, we demonstrate the activities of these novel compounds against six typical gram-negative and two gram-positive bacteria. A micro-well dilution assay was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration. Streptomycin and chloramphenicol, commercial antibiotics, were used as a positive control. The best activity of all tested bacteria was observed against E. coli, with a MIC value of 1.25 mg/mL, for C3, C6, and C10 complexes. Also, all synthesized complexes showed the same activity against C. albicans.

AB - Two new Schiff base cobalt(III) ([Co(LH)Cl2], 1) and nickel(II) ([Ni(LH)ClO4], 2) complexes with a diimine-dioxime ligand, (4,9-diaza-3,10-diethyl-3,9-dodecadiene-2,11-dione bis oxime (LH2)), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were obtained in MeOH from corresponding metal salts and LH2 in molar ratio 1:1 and further characterized by mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and elemental analysis. Previously reported copper(II) analog, ([Cu2(LH)2]·(ClO4)2, 3) was joined to 1 and 2, and the three metal analogs, 1-3, were further investigated in terms of their electrochemical behavior. The binding studies of the complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and human serum albumin (HSA) were carried out using both spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods. All three complexes exhibit binding affinity towards the DNA chain through intercalative interaction. The binding reaction with HSA showed for 1 and 3 complexes decrease in the peak current obtained in the case of complexes before the addition of HSA, while resulted compound obtained from Ni complex – HSA possesses the same electroactivity as starting complex. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of LH2 as well as its metal complexes, and cisplatin were evaluated on CT-26 mouse colon carcinoma and human LS174T cancer cell lines employing MTT assay. The copper(II) complex exhibited very promising anticancer activity compared with cisplatin.

AB - The status of essential and toxic trace elements in patients with different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is still
unclear and not well characterized. The present study examined the circulatory levels of a wide panel of trace elements (Al,
Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Cd, Pb, and U) in hemodialysis patients (HD group) and pre-dialysis patients with
stage 3 CKD (PD group). Comparisons were made between groups of patients and healthy individuals from the control group
(CG). The levels of Al, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Sr, and Pb were higher, while the levels of Cr, Zn, Rb, Cd, and U were lower
in HD patients than in our CG. Higher levels of Al and Se, as well as lower levels of As, Sr, Zn, Rb, and U were significant
and distinguished HD from PD. Among other analyzed elements, Co, Se, and U are the only trace elements that did not
distinguish PD from CG at a statistically significant level. The HD group had lower serum U levels than the PD group, and
this could be a result of hemodialysis. This study also revealed that the Cu/Zn ratio could be used as a marker for early and
late detection of renal failure. Marked changes of essential and toxic trace element levels in sera indicate additional pathophysiological
events in CKD, which could additionally contribute to the preexisting increased morbidity of HD patients.
Measurement of trace elements in HD patients should be performed routinely.

AB - According to recent research, even low levels of environmental chemicals, particularly heavy metals, can considerably disrupt placental homeostasis. This review aims to explore the profile of non-essential trace metals in placental tissues across the globe and to specify trace metal(s) that can be candidates for impaired placental health. Accordingly, we conducted an extensive survey on relevant databases of peer-reviewed papers published in the last two decades. Among a considerable number of non-essential trace metals, arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) were identified as the most detrimental to placental health. Comparative analysis showed remarkable differences in placental levels of these trace metals worldwide. Based on current data reported across the globe, a median (min–max) range from 0.55 to 15 ng/g for placental As levels could be deemed safe. The placental Cd and Pb levels were markedly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Occupationally exposed pregnant women had several orders of magnitude higher Cd, Pb, and Hg levels in placental tissues than non-occupationally exposed women. Also, we concluded that even low-level exposure to As, Cd, Pb, and Hg could be deleterious to proper fetal development. This review implies the need to reduce exposure to non-essential trace metals to preserve placental health and prevent numerous poor pregnancy outcomes. Overall, the information presented is expected to help plan future fundamental and applied investigations on the placental toxicity of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Due to the recognized harmful effects of some trace elements on fetal development after long-term exposures, it is first important to address their basic/physiological levels before monitoring toxicological effects and clinical outcomes on prenatal and postnatal health. This research aimed to define, for the first time, reference values for multiple (ultra) trace elements in umbilical cord blood (UCB) plasma samples of a notable number of healthy pregnant women (n = 125). All samples were collected during 2020–2021 and all participants were from Belgrade and two regions (Šumadija and Podunavlje). Following trace elements were enrolled in this study: essential (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo), toxic (Be, Al, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Pb, Th, U), rare earth (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm), and noble metals (Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Ir, Os, Pt). UCB plasma samples were diluted with suitable solvents and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The analytical technique used was validated by the standard addition method and using certified reference materials. Zn was found in the highest amount and Tm in the least amount. Be, Co, Ag, Sb, La, and Ce exhibited statistically significant differences in the four age groups (20 to 41 years), whereas Ag and Ce showed a tendency to increase with age. Furthermore, our participants had notably higher As, Ni, and Co, levels and lower Zn levels compared to other populations. This is the first study that, in addition to analyzing essential and toxic trace elements, also provided an analysis of noble and rare earth elements in UCB plasma samples. Presented results can be used as a starting point or database for further studies, in terms of predicting the pregnancy outcome and postnatal development.

AB - With the ever-growing concern for human health and wellbeing, the prenatal period ofdevelopment requires special attention since fetuses can be exposed to various metals through themother. Therefore, this study explored the status of selected toxic (Pb, Cd, Ni, As, Pt, Ce, Rb, Sr, U)and essential trace metals (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in the umbilical cord (UC) sera, maternal sera, andplacental tissue samples of 92 healthy women with normal pregnancies. A further aim focuses on thepotential transplacental transfer of these trace metals. Based on the obtained levels of investigatedelements in clinical samples, it was observed that all of the trace metals cross the placental barrierand reach the fetus. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed significant differences in levels oftoxic Ni, As, Cd, U, Sr, Rb, and essential Mn, Cu, and Zn between all three types of analyzed clinicalsamples. Correlation analysis highlighted As to be an element with levels that differed significantlybetween all tested samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to enhance these findings.PCA demonstrated that Cd, Mn, Zn, Rb, Ce, U, and Sr were the most influential trace metals indistinguishing placenta from maternal and UC serum samples. As, Co, and Cu were responsible forthe clustering of maternal serum samples, and PCA demonstrated that the Pt level in UC sera wasresponsible for the clustering of these samples. Overall, the findings of this study could contribute toa better understanding of transplacental transfer of these trace metals, and shed a light on overalllevels of metal exposure in the population of healthy pregnant women and their fetuses.

AB - Background: As a consequence of the progressive decline in human semen quality in recent decades, modern epidemiological investigations have identified several trace elements that could be responsible for this phenomenon. However, their levels in semen have not been clearly elucidated, particularly for elements present in ultra-trace levels. Methods: We aimed to determine the levels of 39 (ultra)trace elements and 5 macroelements in human semen samples with confirmed normozoospermia using ICP-based techniques. The research was amplified by analyzing blood samples from the same participants. Results: Among the analyzed (ultra)trace elements in semen samples, Zn is the most and Tm is the least prominent. Zn levels in semen are so high that Zn should be considered as a macroelement in this matrix. The levels of Zn, Rh, Sm, Re, Ir, Tl, Na, and Ca were significantly higher in semen, while the levels of Cu, As, Rb, Gd, Sb, Tb, Tm, Lu, K, and Fe were significantly higher in blood. Correlation analysis of the levels of 44 individual elements in paired semen and blood samples revealed positive correlations between 43 of the elements, particularly for Tl and Pt. An exception was the negative correlation for Cu, which showed that its high level in semen is associated with a low level in blood and contrariwise. Conclusion: The reported data can be used as baseline levels/reference values for 44 elements in human semen. Furthermore, the findings of this study could be relevant for further consideration of male infertility.

AB - Background: Although essential trace elements (ETEs) play pivotal roles in life-supporting biochemical processes, their function in innate and adaptive immunity has not been fully elucidated, particularly during immunization. Furthermore, the association between anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies and ETE levels with vaccine responsiveness has not been investigated. Methods: The present study explored the status of ETEs (Mn, Cu, Zn, and Se) in sera of healthy women before and after vaccination with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a follow-up period of six months. The main aim was to explore links between ETE levels and IgG antibodies produced against Spike glycoprotein's Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD). Results: A recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprising the receptor binding domain was successfully expressed in HEK-293 T cells. The purified protein was suitable for producing a sensitive antibody detection assay for human serum and monitored seropositivity, indicating a transient response with peak anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels 2 months after vaccination. In parallel to increasing antibody titers, serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Se were not affected by vaccination, and concentrations remained relatively constant at the different sampling times during the 6-month observation period. Total serum Zn concentrations were slightly elevated when compared between the first and last sampling dates. Overall, no consistent effects of vaccination on any of the three trace elements analyzed in our study were observed. Conclusion: Vaccination of adult healthy female volunteers with an mRNA vaccine was not associated with consistent changes in serum trace element concentrations over a six-month observation period.

AB - Abstract: Nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of β-diketonato complexes of nickel(II) and iron(III). The mechano-chemical activation of the complex precursors was used to ensure the increase in the reaction activity and consequently reduce thermal decomposition temperature. The prepared sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR confirmed the spinel phase of the investigated powder. SEM and TEM revealed the ultrafine nature of nanosized polygonal particles, with a pronounced agglomeration effect. The capacity for electrocatalytic applications was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrocatalytic measurements pointed out that the addition of 5% of nickel ferrite as a modifier to carbon paste electrode caused a current increase and a decrease of the EIS semicircle. Further increase in the amount of the modifier decreased heterogeneity of the electrode surface and served as excellent sensor for the detection of gallic acid in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with the detection limit of 0.27 µM. This unambiguously indicated the significant improvement in electrode transfer rate and better characteristics of the diffusion layer. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - Herein, we report a low-valent cobalt-catalyzed deprotection of allyloxyarenes. The method displays a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance, granting its utilization on more complex substrates, including O-allylated derivatives of natural products and drugs. Based on comprehensive experiments, a plausible mechanistic pathway for the low-valent cobalt-catalyzed O-deallylation of allyloxyarenes is proposed.

AB - Correct elucidation of physiological and pathological processes mediated by extracellular vesicles (EV) is highly dependent on the reliability of the method used for their purification. Currently available chemical/physical protocols for sample fractionation are time-consuming, often scarcely reproducible and their yields are low. Immuno-capture based approaches could represent an effective purification alternative to obtain homogeneous EV samples. An easy-to-operate chromatography system was set-up for the purification of intact EVs based on a single domain (VHH) antibodies-copolymer matrix suitable for biological samples as different as conditioned cell culture medium and human plasma. Methacrylate-based copolymer is a porous solid support, the chemical versatility of which enables its efficient functionalization with VHHs. The combined analyses of morphological features and biomarker (CD9, CD63 and CD81) presence indicated that the recovered EVs were exosomes. The lipoprotein markers APO-A1 and APO-B were both negative in tested samples. This is the first report demonstrating the successful application of spherical porous methacrylate-based copolymer coupled with VHHs for the exosome isolation from biological fluids. This inexpensive immunoaffinity method has the potential to be applied for the isolation of EVs belonging to different morphological and physiological classes.

AB - C-phycocyanin (C-PC), the major protein of cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis, is a blue
pigment that primarily transfers energy during photosynthesis. It has diverse
biotechnological applications since it can be used in nutraceutical, cosmetics,
pharmaceutical industries, and biomedical research. Its intensive blue colour and strong
antioxidant activity give C-PC significant potential to replace synthetic colourants in the
food industry. However, thermal treatment of food has detrimental effects on C-PC colour
due to sensitivity to higher temperatures; therefore, the application of this natural colourant
in food and other products is limited. Hence, improving C-PC stability is the major
challenge for successful application in food and beverages colouring. In the light of this,we
aim to investigate the thermal stability of C-PC in the presence of selected sugars (glucose,
fructose and sucrose), commonly used in the food industry. Ex-situabsorption
spectrophotometryshowed that 18% solution (w/v) of glucose, sucrose and fructose at pH
7,upon incubation at 65℃, exhibit 91.4, 52.9 and 52.5% of colour preservation,
respectively. In situ fluorescence measurements revealed that free C-PC has a melting point
of 55.4°C, while the presence of glucose and sucrose increases the melting point of C-PC
to 64.4 and 61.4°C, respectively. On the other hand, fructose does not significantly
influence the C-PC melting point. These results show that the thermal stability ofthe CPCsolution is substantially increased in the presence of sugars, while the type of sugar
significantly determines the extent of the stabilisation effect. Overall, our study provides
the strategy for enhancing the application potential of C-PC as natural food colourant,
providing a food product with vivid blue colour and substantial antioxidant activities.

AB - To minimize the impact of artificial food colouring (e.g., in drinks) on health, chemical dyes are increasingly replaced by natural
ones. C-phycocyanin (C-PC), hexameric light-harvesting phycobiliprotein from cyanobacteria Artrhorspira platensis, has been
proposed as an alternative. The intensive blue colour of C-PC arises from phycocyanobilin (PCB), the covalently attached
tetrapyrrole chromophores. The presence of PCB chromophores gives C-PC a broad range of bioactive effects (antioxidant,
anticancer, and immunomodulatory ones), substantially increasing their potential for applications in the food industry. However,
C-PC issensitive to temperature, and its colour significantly diminishes by thermal treatment, limiting its use in the food industry.
Hence, improving C-PC stability is the major challenge for successful application in food and beverage colouring. It is well
known that binding small, high-affinity ligands significantly improve protein stability. Therefore, selecting food-derived ligands
(such as vitamins, polyphenols, sugars, etc.) with the ability to bind C-PC firmly could be a promising strategy to increase the
C-PC stability and preserve its colour, which should increase its application potential in the food industry.
The main aim of this study is to characterize the binding of selected food-derived ligands (including quercetin, coenzyme Q10,
gallic acid, vanillic acid, vanillin, resveratrol, glucose, fructose, sucrose, vitamin K, menthol, and dihydrolipoic acid) to C-PC
by standard spectroscopic methods (UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry, and CD spectroscopy). Quercetin has
the strongest binding affinity to C-PC (Ka~3.7x105 M-1
), and its effects on C-PC structure and stability have been further
investigated. CD spectroscopy revealed that quercetin induces stabilization of the protein secondary structure under simulated
physiological conditions, while the conformation of the PCB chromophore is altered upon quercetin binding. Furthermore,
quercetin binding increases the thermal stability of C-PC.
Overall, our study revealed the ability of high-affinity, food-derived ligands to increase the stability of C-PC, which may enhance
its application potential in the food industry.

AB - Over the last few years there has been a great interest in developing the efficient methodologies for the preparation of rare earth doped up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs), which exhibit emission in visible part of spectra when excited by the near infrared (NIR) radiation. Due to this unique optical property, as well as the high chemical stability they could be used either as security or fluorescent biological labels. Depending on the host crystal structure and choice of the dopant, these could exhibit different luminescence response. In this work we represent the effect which hydro/solvo thermal treatment and simple co-precipitation have on structural, morphological and optical properties of NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs. We showed that pure cubic phase crystallizes in monodisperse spherical nanoparticles obtained through hydro/solvothermal synthesis, while co-precipitation and annealing at 500°C for 5 hours leads to the obtaining of agglomerated microparticles with hexagonal phase. Due to the difference in size and morphology of the samples, the different up-conversion mechanisms are established upon the excitation by the infrared light (λ = 978 nm), intensifying green emission (2H11/2,4S3/2 →4I15/2 ) in sample obtained through hydro/solvo thermal synthesis.
