Influence of Electrolyte Impurities from E-Waste Electrorefining on Copper Extraction Recovery

AB  - In order to reflect possible issues in future sole e-waste processing, an electrolyte of complex chemical composition reflecting system of sole e-waste processing was obtained by following a specially designed pyro-electrometallurgical method. The obtained non-standard electrolyte was further used for the purpose of comprehensive metal interference evaluation on the copper solvent extraction (SX) process. Optimization of the process included a variation of several process parameters, allowing determination of the effect of the most abundant and potentially the most influential impurities (Ni, Sn, Fe, and Zn) and 14 other trace elements. Moreover, comparing three commercial extractants of different active chelating groups, it was determined that branched aldoxime reagent is favorable for Cu extraction from the chemically complex system, as can be expected in future e-waste recycling. The results of this study showed that, under optimal conditions of 20 vol.% extractant concentration, feed pH 1.5, O/A ratio 3, and 10-min phase contact time, 88.1% of one stage Cu extraction was achieved. Co-extraction of the Fe, Zn, Ni, and Sn was under 8%, while Pb and trace elements were negligible. Optimal conditions (H2SO4 180 g/L, O/A = 2, and contact time 5 min) enabled 95.3% Cu stripping and under 6% of the most influential impurities. In addition, an impurity monitoring and distribution methodology enabled a better understanding and design of the process for the more efficient valorization of metals from e-waste.

AB  - This work investigates the release of toxic elements from wood into the experimental spirit models and the safety risks for consumers. The spirit models were prepared as ethanolic extracts using the procedure which reproduces maturation of spirits. Investigation included staves of wood species commonly used in Balkan cooperage: mulberry, Myrobalan plum, black locust, wild cherry, and various oaks. Potassium was the most abundant element, except in the wild cherry extract where calcium was dominant, and the Myrobalan plum extract where phosphorus was the most abundant. The parameters for the health risk assessment, such as hazard index (HI) and hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated for potentially toxic elements and indicated that all wood extracts would be safe for human consumption. Owing to the proven abundance of phenolics in the investigated wood extracts, relations among elements and phenolics were also studied and conclusions were made based on the statistically significant correlations.

Impact of essential and toxic trace metals on thyroid health and cancer: A review

AB  - Most investigations conducted in the last four decades have shown a rising incidence of thyroid diseases worldwide. Although our knowledge of the molecular pathways of thyroid disease has advanced, the initial steps in thyroid cancerogenesis have not yet been sufficiently elucidated. However, recent human biomonitoring studies have shown that specific trace metals, as major endocrine disrupters, could be considered as risk factors for impaired thyroid health and the evolution of thyroid cancer (TC). In this review, the impact of essential and toxic trace metals from the environment on thyroid health and TC was evaluated. Furthermore, this review clarifies which trace metals most likely contribute to the etiology of TC. Biomarkers based on trace metal ratios are proposed. Overall, the information described in this review is expected to be useful in planning future fundamental and applied studies on the endocrine toxicity of essential and toxic trace metals. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

AB  - Geometries of aromatic/aromatic interactions in crystal structures of small molecules from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) (benzene/benzene, toluene/toluene, and p-phenol/p-phenol interactions) and in protein structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) (Phe/Phe and Tyr/Tyr interactions) were studied and compared. The data show a larger influence of crystal packing/surrounding, more than the influence of substituents, on geometries of aromatic/aromatic interactions. While the interactions in crystal structures from the CSD show preference for parallel stacking interactions at the large offsets, in proteins from the PDB, they show preference for T-shaped geometries with small offsets.

The results were accompanied by a comparative determination of the same elements in healthy blood (HB) and adenomatous blood (AB) samples. This is the first study that has provided in-depth knowledge of the baseline composition of the clinically important elements of HAT samples. Furthermore, this study showed elementary changes in AA patients. The AATs had significantly higher amounts of Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, Pb, K, and Mg compared to the HATs. The opposite results were obtained for the same elements in the AB samples, indicating that the benign adrenal masses could have the ability to withdraw these elements from circulation. These results were supplemented by principal component analysis (PCA). ICP-based techniques were successfully applied to accurately provide a more comprehensive insight into the clinically important elements in the solid tissue and blood samples. The results of this study are a deep-dive into the likely future of clinical studies. Moreover, target elements should be taken into consideration as novel initiating and/or modifying factors of AA, after further research, this would include the analysis of a larger number of samples and prospective follow-up of the patient’s elemental profile.

The opposite results were obtained for the same elements in the AB samples, indicating that the benign adrenal masses could have the ability to withdraw these elements from circulation. These results were supplemented by principal component analysis (PCA). ICP-based techniques were successfully applied to accurately provide a more comprehensive insight into the clinically important elements in the solid tissue and blood samples. The results of this study are a deep-dive into the likely future of clinical studies. Moreover, target elements should be taken into consideration as novel initiating and/or modifying factors of AA, after further research, this would include the analysis of a larger number of samples and prospective follow-up of the patient’s elemental profile.",

An effect of the mixture composition on its microstructure, surface properties, and catalytic activity for an electrooxidation of 1-propanol in an alkaline environment was examined. AB  - The mutual impact of low-quality lignite and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during open system pyrolysis was investigated, aiming to improve utilization of lignite with simultaneous treatment of HDPE waste. Pyrolysis of lignite, HDPE, and their mixture (mass ratio, 1:1) was performed at temperatures 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C. Initial substrates and pyrolysis products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), specific carbon isotope analysis of individual hydrocarbons (δ13C), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and elemental analysis. The positive synergetic effect during co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture was observed at temperatures ≥450 °C, with the greatest being at 500 °C. The highest yield of liquid co-pyrolysis products with a similar composition to that of crude oils is also noticed at 500 °C. The yields of liquid and gaseous products and quality of pyrolytic products obtained by co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture are notably improved compared with pyrolysis of lignite alone. On the other hand, data obtained from pyrolysis of HDPE alone indicate that it cannot be concurrent to well-developed catalytic thermal processes for polymer recycling. However, concerning the huge amount of produced HDPE, at least part of this plastic material can be reused for advanced thermal treatment of lignite, particularly in countries where this low-rank coal represents the main source of energy.

AB  - The phenolic and elemental profiles of Serbian autochthonous grape varieties ‘Smederevka’ and ‘Plovdina’ were studied and compared with some international varieties. Total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity were highest in seeds of ‘Plovdina’, and in ‘Smederevka’ skins, which also had the highest contents of ferulic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids (16.0, 1.44 and 0.98 mg/kg, respectively). Protocatechuic acid was quantified only in the seeds of these varieties. Untypically for Vitis vinifera L. species, the presence of malvidin 3,5-O-dihexoside was found in the skins of ‘Vranac’ and ‘Muscat Hamburg’. In ‘Plovdina’ skins among the anthocyanins, hexosides of peonidin and delphinidin were prevalent. ‘Plovdina’ grapes had lower quantities of Al, Ni and Na in comparison to the other varieties intended for white wine production. Significant correlations among the most abundant elements, such as K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, and Zn, pointed to potential positive interactions. For elements that have toxicological reference values, the health risk assessment was calculated for adults and children, and suggested that all samples were safe for human consumption.

AB  - Demand for camel milk (CM) is increasing worldwide, due to its high nutritious value and health benefits. In this study, whole CM powders were produced by spray drying (SD) at six inlet temperatures (190 °C–250 °C) and by freeze drying (FD). Physicochemical and functional properties of CM powder proteins were investigated. SD at higher inlet temperatures (230 °C–250 °C) resulted in higher extent of Maillard reaction (MR), in comparison to lower temperatures (190 °C–200 °C) and FD treatment. Both treatments had negative effect on casein solubility, while whey proteins remained soluble and slightly increased its solubility with the extent of MR. The CM powders obtained at higher inlet temperatures demonstrated improved antioxidant activity. Secondary structure of whey proteins did not differ among the samples, while surface hydrophobicity of whey proteins was higher in all SD than in FD samples, suggesting only limited denaturation of camel whey proteins at higher inlet temperatures of drying. Thus, the effects of SD under the conditions applied in our study did not decrease camel whey protein solubility, while drying procedure itself regardless of temperature decreased solubility of camel milk caseins. MR generated during CM processing could be an important means of compensating for the lack of antioxidant protection normally associated with β-lactoglobulin but happens to be absent from this milk.

AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3and Fe2O3was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300°C for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 °C for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3with Fe2O3resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature. © 2021 Authors. By running the reactions at 35 °C, compounds were isolated as single isomers since the undesired Dimroth rearrangement was completely suppressed. Furthermore, the Dimroth rearrangement of N,1-diaryl-1H-tetrazol-5-amines was rationalized by conducting comprehensive experiments and NMR analysis as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations of thermodynamic stability of the compounds. It was established that the Dimroth rearrangement is thermodynamically controlled, and the equilibrium of the reaction is determined by the stability of the corresponding isomers. The mechanism was investigated by additional DFT calculations, and the opening of the tetrazole ring was shown to be the rate-determining step. By maneuvering Pd-catalyzed N-arylation and the subsequent Dimroth rearrangement, two more N,1-diaryl-1H-tetrazol-5-amine derivatives were acquired, which otherwise cannot be synthesized by employing the C–N cross-coupling reaction.

AB  - The Pd-catalyzed N-arylation method for the synthesis of eighteen N,1-diaryl-1H-tetrazol-5-amine derivatives is reported. By running the reactions at 35 °C, compounds were isolated as single isomers since the undesired Dimroth rearrangement was completely suppressed. Furthermore, the Dimroth rearrangement of N,1-diaryl-1H-tetrazol-5-amines was rationalized by conducting comprehensive experiments and NMR analysis as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations of thermodynamic stability of the compounds. It was established that the Dimroth rearrangement is thermodynamically controlled, and the equilibrium of the reaction is determined by the stability of the corresponding isomers. The mechanism was investigated by additional DFT calculations, and the opening of the tetrazole ring was shown to be the rate-determining step. By maneuvering Pd-catalyzed N-arylation and the subsequent Dimroth rearrangement, two more N,1-diaryl-1H-tetrazol-5-amine derivatives were acquired, which otherwise cannot be synthesized by employing the C–N cross-coupling reaction.

AB  - An optimized method is presented to make magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG) from 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste cell fibers; (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA), and amino-modified diatomite. Functionalized Cell-NH2, Cell-DTPA fibers, and diatomite were structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR, Raman, and FE-SEM analysis. Amino and carboxyl group content was determined via standard volumetric methods. Response surface method was applied to rationalize the number of experiments related to Cell-MG synthesis and heavy metal ions column adsorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration of pollutants on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch, while initial concentration and flow rate were studied in a flow system. The calculated capacities of 88.2, 100.7, 95.8 and 78.2 mg g−1 for Ni2+, Pb2+, Cr(VI) and As(V) ions, respectively, were obtained from Langmuir model fitting. Intra-particle diffusion as a rate-limiting step was evaluated from pseudo-second-order and Weber–Morris model fitting. Thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous and low endothermic processes. The results from reusability study, wastewater purification and fixed-bed column study proved the high applicability of Cell-MG. Additionally, high removal capacity of four dyes together with density functional theory and molecular interaction fields, help in the establishment of relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions at adsorbate/adsorbent interface.
