AB - Herein, a screen–printed diamond electrode (SPDE) coupled with a “point-of-care” platform (30 µL-drop concepts, single-drop-detection approach) was successfully applied for the electrochemical determination of pterostilbene (PTS). Cyclic voltammetry identified irreversible oxidation of PTS, where oxidation peak was shown to be strongly dependent on the pH of the working environmental. Although the proposition of the detailed electrochemical oxidation mechanism of PTS goes out of the scope of the present research, we have determined the most probable reactive site of our analyte, by utilizing DFT-based reactivity descriptors (Fukui functions). For electrochemical quantification of PTS, oxidation peak at 0.32 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was followed in presence of 0.5 mol L−1 of Briton–Robinson buffer solution (pH = 9). Coupled with the optimized parameters of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), SPDE detected PTS in two linear ranges (first range was from 0.011 to 0.912 µmol L−1; second range was from 0.912 to 4.420 µmol L−1), providing the LOD and LOQ on a nanomolar level (3.1 nmol L−1 and 10.0 nmol L−1, respectively). The selectivity of the optimized DPV method was found to be excellent, with the current changes of less than 7%, in the presence of ten times higher concentrations of the certain interferences. The practical applicability of the SPDE and single-drop-detection approach in dietary supplements (with a declared PTS content of 50 mg/tablet), with the recovery values ranging from 95 to 102%, shows that the developed method has high potential for precise and accurate PTS detection, as well as exceptional miniaturization possibilities of relevant equipment for on-site sensing.

AB - Bioethanol is one of the main bio-based molecules produced mainly from sugar cane, molasses and corn. Its environmental advantages allow it to be considered as safe and the cleanest fuel alternative. Starch is a widespread renewable carbohydrate conventionally used for bioethanol production via energy demanding liquefaction and saccharification processes. Raw starch hydrolysis using enzymes capable of degrading it below the gelatinization temperature significantly simplifies the process and reduces the cost of starch processing. In this study, an innovative modified simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process is proposed for the production of bioethanol from highly concentrated raw corn starch (30 % w/v). A two-step synergistic hydrolysis and fermentation was carried out in a single bioreactor vessel. To ensure high process efficiency, factors influencing the hydrolysis of concentrated raw corn starch by raw starch degrading α-amylase from Bacillus paralicheniformis ATCC 9945a (BliAmy) and commercial glucoamylase were investigated. Box–Behnken experimental design was used to predict the effects of different ratios of added enzymes, glucoamylase addition time, incubation time, and pH on hydrolysis yield. Optimal conditions for the highest yield of hydrolysis of raw corn starch (90 %) were obtained after 8 h using 5.0 IU BliAmy per mg of starch and 0.5 % (v/v) glucoamylase at pH 4.5 and 60 °C. Obtained glucose was further fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 30 °C in the same vessel for bioethanol production. Bioethanol concentration at 129.2 g/L, with productivity of 2.94 g/L/h and ethanol yield (YP/S) at 0.50 g EtOH/g total sugar, equivalent to 87.8 % theoretical yield, was obtained by modified simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. This work enriches the information of bioethanol production and offers a novel strategy for raw starch hydrolysis under industrial conditions.

AB - Molecularly imprinting technology was applied for preparing selective sorbents for benzophenone-4 (BP4), an organic UV filter used in sunscreens and cosmetics. Several imprinted polymers were prepared by bulk polymerization, using BP4 as template. Combination of stability (mechanical and chemical), selectivity and robustness of the imprinted polymers with BP4 properties resulted in a successful imprinting process (imprinting factors in range 1.05–2.60). The prepared polymers were characterised by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, conductometric titrations and nitrogen physisorption at 77 K. Adsorption capacities and selectivity towards 7 other organic UV filters (benzophenone-3, benzophenone-8, homosalate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, ethyl hexyl salicylate, ethyl hexyl p-dimethylamino benzoate and ethyl hexyl p-methoxycinnamate) were determined, proving high adsorption capacity and high selectivity for BP4 binding. The highest adsorption capacity was observed for 4-vinylpyridine/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate co-polymer prepared in dimethyl sulfoxide (1.108 mmol g-1). The imprinted polymer with the highest binding capacity was applied to solid phase extraction of BP4 from aqueous solutions with 98.5 % efficiency.

AB - Chemotaxonomy presents various challenges that need to be overcome in order to obtain valid and reliable results. Individual genetic and environmental variations can give a false picture and lead to wrong conclusions. Applying a holistic approach, based on multivariate data analysis, these challenges can be overcome. Thus, a metabolomics approach has to be optimized depending on the subject of research. We used 1H NMR-based metabolomics as a potential chemotaxonomic tool on the selected Euphorbia species growing wild in Serbia. Principal components analysis (PCA), soft independent modeling by class analogy (SIMCA) and Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to analyze obtained NMR data in order to reveal chemotaxonomic biomarkers. The standard protocol for plant metabolomics was optimized aiming to extract more specific metabolites, which are characteristic for the Euphorbia genus. The obtained models were validated, which revealed that variables unique for each species were associated with certain classes of molecules according to literature data. In E. salicifolia, acacetin-7-O-glycoside (not found before in the species) was detected, and the structure of the aglycone part was solved based on 2D NMR data. In the presented paper, we have shown that metabolomics can be successfully used in Euphorbia chemotaxonomy.

AB - Crude oil samples from the Sharara-C oil field (Concession NC-115, Murzuq Basin, SW Libya) were analysed by organic geochemical methods in order to infer the geochemical characteristics of their respective source rocks. Aromatic hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) was used to analyse saturated biomarkers. The Sharara-C oils are interpreted to have been generated by marine shales containing mixed terrigenous and marine organic materials deposited in an intermediate (suboxic) environment. Age-specific biomarker ratios indicated that the oils are older than Cretaceous, and maturation-related parameters pointed to their high thermal maturity. Consistent with previous studies, source rocks are inferred to be “hot” shales in the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Almost all the parameter ratios calculated varied over a very narrow range, indicating that the investigated oils were compositionally similar. The only significant difference that was noted concerned the sterane/hopane ratios whose variation suggested that there was some variability in the composition of the source organic material. The organic geochemical parameters determined for the Sharara-C crude oils were compared with published data on other crude oils from Concession NC-115. Almost all the parameters agreed well with previously published data on oils from this part of the Murzuq Basin. The greatest deviation concerned the values of some of the maturity parameters. This tended to confirm the conclusions of previous studies concerning the presence of a number of distinct oil families and sub-families in the Sharara oil field area which are genetically related but which have different maturities.

AB - Adrenergic receptors are among the most studied G protein-coupled receptors. Activation or blockade of these receptors is a major therapeutic approach for the treatment of numerous disorders such as cardiac hypertrophy, congestive heart failure, hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, depression, benign prostate hyperplasia, anaphylaxis, asthma, and hyperthyroidism. Among all nine cloned adrenoceptor subtypes and the subsequent development of animal models, a significant target for various neurological conditions treatment is alpha1-adrenergic receptors. 2-{[4-(2-Methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl]alkyl}-1H-benzo[d]imidazoles, their 5 substituted derivatives, and structurally similar, arylpiperazine based alpha1-adrenergic receptors antagonists (trazodone, naftopidil, and urapidil) have been subjects of comparative analysis. Most of the novel compounds showed alpha1-adrenergic affinity in the range from 22 nM to 250 nM. The in silico docking and molecular dynamics simulations, binding data together with absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) calculations identified the promising lead compounds. The results brought out the conclusions which allowed us to propose a rationale for the activity of these molecules and to highlight six compounds (2-5, 8, and 12) that exhibited an acceptable pharmacokinetic profile to the advanced investigation as the potential alpha1-adrenergic receptor antagonists.

AB - Lipophilicity and ionization constant of sixteen fentanyl analogues were investigated by reversed-phase thin-
layer chromatography (RP-TLC). Fourteen compounds have nitrogen containing groups at C-3 position of the
piperidine ring and two compounds are 3-carbomethoxy derivatives of fentanyl. Among them, five are diaste-
reomeric cis/trans couples and six novel trans diastereomers. In addition, the lipophilicity and ionization constant
of fentanyl were also determined by the same method, as a reference. The physicochemical property, lip-
ophilicity, expressed as retention indices RM
0 , b, and C0, as well as PC1, was determined and correlated with in
silico values. Ionization constants were determined on the basis of the relationships between analyte’s retention
expressed as RF and mobile phase pH. Calculated structural descriptors together with the retention indices, were
subjected to the principal component analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA, in order to provide
basic insights into the similarities among the studied compounds. The blood – brain barrier (BBB) permeation
was investigated in the function of experimentally obtained values of lipophilicity, polar surface area and mo-
lecular weight. In general, results of the present research corroborate well with previously determined anti-
nociceptive activities of the investigated compounds, pointing out that besides the cis/trans isomerism, another
set of important parameters should be taken into account when designing new derivatives of C-3 substituted
fentanyl, especially lipophilicity, voluminosity and HBD/A character of the substituents. Accordingly, RP-TLC
can be considered as a valuable asset in the ligand-based drug design

AB - Lipophilicity and ionization constant of sixteen fentanyl analogues were investigated by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP-TLC). Fourteen compounds have nitrogen containing groups at C-3 position of thepiperidine ring and two compounds are 3-carbomethoxy derivatives of fentanyl. Among them, five are diaste-reomeric cis/trans couples and six novel trans diastereomers. In addition, the lipophilicity and ionization constantof fentanyl were also determined by the same method, as a reference. The physicochemical property, lip-ophilicity, expressed as retention indices RM0 , b, and C0, as well as PC1, was determined and correlated with insilico values. Ionization constants were determined on the basis of the relationships between analyte’s retentionexpressed as RF and mobile phase pH. Calculated structural descriptors together with the retention indices, weresubjected to the principal component analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA, in order to providebasic insights into the similarities among the studied compounds. The blood – brain barrier (BBB) permeationwas investigated in the function of experimentally obtained values of lipophilicity, polar surface area and mo-lecular weight. In general, results of the present research corroborate well with previously determined anti-nociceptive activities of the investigated compounds, pointing out that besides the cis/trans isomerism, anotherset of important parameters should be taken into account when designing new derivatives of C-3 substitutedfentanyl, especially lipophilicity, voluminosity and HBD/A character of the substituents. Accordingly, RP-TLCcan be considered as a valuable asset in the ligand-based drug design

AB - In this paper, Cu(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) complexes with N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxo-2-(2-(1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)ethan-1-aminium chloride (HL1Cl) were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and DFT calculations. In all three complexes, a ligand (L1) is coordinated in a deprotonated formally neutral zwitterionic form via NNO donor set atoms. Cu(II) and Zn(II) form mononuclear penta-coordinated complexes [CuL1(N3)(CH3OH)]BF4 and [ZnL1(N3)2], respectively, while Mn(II) forms a binuclear [Mn2L12(μ-1,1-N3)2(N3)2]·2CH3OH complex, with unusual distorted trigonal-prismatic geometry around the metal centers. The antimicrobial activity of these complexes was tested against a panel of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, two yeasts and one fungal strain. The binuclear Mn(II) complex showed antifungal activity of similar intensity to amphotericin B. Based on the results of the brine shrimp test and DPPH radical scavenging activity, the most active Cu(II) and Mn(II) complexes were selected for evaluation of cytotoxic activity against five malignant cancer cell lines (HeLa, A375, MCF7, PC-3 and A549) and one normal cell line HaCaT. Both complexes showed significant activity. It should be pointed out that the activity of the Mn(II) complex against the MCF7 breast cancer cell line is only slightly weaker than that of cisplatin, but with selectivity to the tumor cell line in comparison to normal HaCaT cells, which is non-existent in the case of cisplatin.

AB - In this paper, the previously synthesized Cu(II) complex ([CuL1(N3) (CH3OH)]BF4) with N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxo-2-(2-(1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)ethan-1-aminium chloride, has been characterized and its biological activity has been studied in detail. The Cu(II) complex consists of ligand coordinated in a deprotonated, formally neutral zwitter-ionic form, via NNO atoms, one azido ligand and one methanol molecule. The Cu(II) complex was selected due to results of the cytotoxic activity, the brine shrimp test and DPPH radical scavenging activity, which were previously performed. The effects of Cu(II) complex on cell cycle phase distribution of cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells were investigated in order to examine the mechanisms of its anticancer activity. The measurement of intracellular ROS levels in HeLa and HaCaT cell lines were evaluated in order to explore their possible generation and the role in cytotoxic activity. The possible anti-invasive and anti-angiogenic properties of Cu(II) complex were evaluated. DNA binding experiments, including fluorescence displacement study and DNA cleavage experiments, were performed in order to obtain information on the type of DNA-metal complex interactions. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society. AB - The solubility of a model basic drug, nortriptyline
(Nor), was investigated as a function of pH in phosphate and/or a
chloride-containing aqueous suspension using experimental
practices recommended in the previously published “white
paper” (Avdeef et al., 2016). The pH-Ramp Shake-Flask (pHRSF) method, introduced in our earlier work (Marković et al.,
2019), was applied. An improved and more detailed experimental
design of the Nor solubility measurement allowed us to exploit the
full capacity of the pH-RSF method. Complex equilibria in the
aqueous phase (cationic and anionic complex formation between
Nor and the phosphate) and solid-phase transformations (Nor free
base, 1:1 Nor hydrochloride salt, 1:1 and 1:2 Nor phosphate salts)
were characterized by a detailed analysis of the solubility
measurements using the computer program pDISOL-X. The solid phases were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis,
differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analyses. The results of the present investigation illustrate
the influence of competing counterions, such as buffering agents, complexing agents, salt coformers, tonicity adjusters, and so forth,
on the aqueous solubility of drugs and interconversion of salts. Careful attention given to these factors can be helpful in the
formulation of drug products.

AB - Chitosan (Ch)-derived from biowaste along with smectite, an abundant clay mineral, were used in a low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of a new type of catalyst. Nanocomposite catalysts constituted of Co supported on smectite with chitosan-derived carbon loading were obtained using an impregnation‑carbonization procedure and denoted as Co/cCh-S-T (T stands for applied carbonization temperature). The carbonization was performed in the temperature range from 400 °C to 700 °C in the flow of N2 providing inert atmosphere. The temperature of 500 °C was found to be the most suitable for catalyst synthesis regarding catalytic performance in a peroxymonosulfate activated degradation of tartrazine. The incorporation of carbonized chitosan structure within the interlamellar space of the smectite was confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed a layered structure of nanocomposites characteristic for smectite, as well as the presence of small spherical cobalt containing nanoformations (confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) well dispersed within structure. The existance of cobalt in the CoII and CoIII oxidation state was proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Co/cCh-S-500 catalyst was proven to be stable and efficient after 5 consecutive cycles. This work showed that nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators exhibited a very promising performance in the degradation of water pollutants.

abstract = "Chitosan (Ch)-derived from biowaste along with smectite, an abundant clay mineral, were used in a low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of a new type of catalyst. This work showed that nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators exhibited a very promising performance in the degradation of water pollutants.",
