AB - Single phase β-NaY0.8-xGdxYb0.18Er0.02F4 nanoparticles with different concentrations of gadolinium ions were prepared via PVP-assisted solvothermal treating at 200°C (PVP- polyvinylpyrrolidone). With the increase in Gd3+ concentration, size of the nanoparticles decreased. The up-converting spectra recorded upon 980 nm irradiation showed the green (510-560 nm) and red (640-690 nm) emissions, due to 2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 transitions, respectively. The strongest up-conversion luminescence was detected in 15 mol% Gd3+-doped nanoparticles obtained after 20 hours of solvothermal treating. With the rise of Gd3+ content up-conversion emission decreased due to increased defect concentration in the NaYF4 matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved in situ generation of hydrophilic nanoparticles as a result of PVP ligands retention at the particle surface.

AB - There is a great technological interest in synthesis of lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticles with specific morphological characteristics and efficient luminescence response suitable for biomedical use [1]. A conventional approach for generation of such particles comprises decomposition of organometallic compoundsin an oxygen-free environment and additional ligand exchange [2,3]. The biocompatible and water soluble NaYF4:Yb,Er@Chitosane particles used in this study were synthesized through facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis and were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FESEM and TEM) and photoluminesce measurement (PL). Due to the presence of the amino groups at their surface these particles exhibit excellent hydrophilic properties and low cytotoxicity against human gingival fibroblasts (HGF), which was proven by MTT assay. Furthermore, upon 980 nm laser irradiation the as-prepared particles were successfully used for in-vitro visualization of the primary cell cultures of head and neck squamous carcinoma cells (HNSCC). In a NaYF4:Yb,Er phase upconversion is enabled by the sequential absorption of two or more near-infrared photons by Yb3+ and subsequent energy transfer to the long-lived metastable electron states of Er3+ which produces luminescence emission at visible spectra after relaxation.

AB - Lanthanide doped up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have significant role in biomedical field, especially in cell imaging and target drug delivery, due to their convenient luminescent properties. For that purpose UCNPs should have the specific morphological and luminescent characteristics. In this study the biocompatible NaYF4:Yb,Er@Chitosane particles were synthesized through one-step hydrothermal synthesis. Obtained particles were characterized in detail using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FESEM and TEM) and photoluminesce measurement (PL). Structural refinement data show the presence of cubic (Fm-3m) phase in spherical shaped nanoparticles size up to 200 nm, while the FTIR analysis revealed the presence of chitosan on the particle surface which have no influence on the luminescence efficiency of the UCNPs. Cytotoxicity as well as cell labeling capability of synthesized UCNPs were tested in vitro on the human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) and head and neck squamous carcinoma cells (HNSCC). The results show excellent biocompatibility against HGF, and successful in- vitro visualization of HNSCC cell cultures upon 980 nm laser irradiation.

AB - Over the last decade, a lot of effort was directed toward developing of the representative methodologies for the preparation of up-converting (UC) particles which exhibit a unique narrow visible emission when excited by lower-energy photon radiation. This work presents the impact of different processing parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of up-converting (UC) rare earth fluorides obtained by hydro/solvothermal synthesis. Monodisperse NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ particles with different morphology, size and crystal phase were synthesized with a help of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) through adjusting the precursor concentration, degree of doping, polarity of solvent and reaction time. They are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and Furrier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as photoluminescence measurements. It was shown that particle size and phase composition are dependent on the precursor concentration, type of solvent and doping degree, while the cubic to hexagonal transformation of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ phase is affected by the reaction time. The crystallization of the orthorhombic YF3:Yb3+/Er3+ phase is established either after decreasing concentration of dopants or increasing polarity of solvents. All of the synthesized particles exhibited efficient up-conversion emission which can be tuned from pure green to the yellowish-orange through control of particles size and phase composition.

AB - In this paper, we studied the effects of Er3+/Yb3+ concentration ratio on structural, morphological and luminescence properties of GdVO4:Er3+/Yb3+ green phosphors prepared by a high-temperature solid state method. The samples with different concentrations (between 0.5 to 2 mol%) of dopant Er3+ emitting ions and different concentrations (between 5 to 20 mol%) of sensitizer ions (Yb3+) were studied. The phosphors were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. For all samples, XRD diffraction patterns confirmed a formation of a pure GdVO4 phase, while the SEM showed that the materials are comprised of chunks of deformed particles with an average diameter ranging from approximately 2 mu m to 8 mu m. Both, down-conversion and up-conversion emission spectra of GdVO4: Er3+/Yb3+ samples, under near UV and IR excitations, exhibit two strong emission bands in the green spectral region at 525 nm and 552 nm wavelengths corresponding to H-2(11/2) - gt I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2) - gt I-4(15/2) electronic transitions of Er3+ ions. The intensity of the green emission was changed by changing the Er3+/Yb3+ concentration ratio. This dual-mode luminescence makes these materials ideal as green phosphors for a wide variety of applications in the fields of bioanalysis and biomedical.

AB - Hydrothermal method has great interest in recent years for synthesis of nano- and micro- crystals of upconverting rare earth (RE) fluorides, with controlled morphology and high purity, under high temperatures and pressures. Some surfactants (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), oleic acid (OA)) along with different type of solvents are added in order to control size, morphology and crystalline phases of particles. In this work Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped YF3 and NaYF4 fine powders were synthesized using the hydro/solvo thermal method in the present of EDTA as a complexing agent. Effect of the processing parameters on the particles crystal structure, morphology and optical properties were estimated on the basis of X-ray diffractometry (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence measurement. It was shown that in terms of increased concentration of RE ions in aqueous solvent media the hexagonal β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ phase with the most efficient green emission were synthesized. On the other side, the occurrence of cubic α-NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ and orthorhombic YF3:Yb3+/Er3+ were observed with a decrease of the RE ions when ethanol is used as a solvent. All of the samples provide intense green emission after been excited with infrared light (λ = 978 nm), which is assigned to the Er3+ (2H11/2, 4S3/2) → 4I15/2 electronic transitions.

AB - Sensitization of TiO2 crystals and nanoparticles with appropriately chosen organic molecules can lead to a significant shift of their absorption threshold from the UV to the visible, thus improving the absorption of the solar spectrum as well as the efficiency of photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices. Herein, the surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with salicylate-type ligands consisting of an extended aromatic ring system, specifically 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, was found to alter the optical properties of nanoparticles in a similar way to salicylic acid. From both absorption measurements and steady-state quenching measurements of modifier fluorescence upon binding to TiO2 in methanol/ water = 90/10 solutions, stability constants in the order of 10(3) M-1 have been determined at pH 2. Fluorescence lifetime measurements, in the presence and absence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles, indicated that the fluorescence quenching process is primarily static quenching, thus proving the formation of a nonfluorescent charge-transfer (CT) complex. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal stability of CT-complexes was investigated by using TPD analysis (TG/DTA/MS). Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were compared with the experimental data. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of a salicylate type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring the six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. The formation of the inner-sphere CT-complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and a reduction in the band gap upon the increase in the electron delocalization when including an additional ring.

AB - The main goal of this PhD thesis was the optimization of parameters and development of the corresponding method for synthesis inorganic luminescent powders based on the rare earth ions doped gadolinium vanadate (GdVO4). The obtained materials were characterized and structural, morphological and optical properties were studied. In the last years, more attention was paid to the study of phosphors based on orthovanadate. The development of modern devices in the field of optoelectronics depends on the improved characteristics of the luminescent materials which have been used to make them. It has been found that the phosphors based on rare earth ions doped gadolinium-vanadate are inorganic luminescent materials that are the most promising, making a customizable resource for numerous applications. In this PhD thesis luminescent powders based on the rare earth ions doped gadolinium vanadate (GdVO4) materials were synthesized by three different techniques: solid state reaction, chemical precipitation from solution and inverse micelles method. The GdVO4: Tm3+, GdVO4: Tm3+/Yb3+, GdVO4: Er3+/Yb3+, GdVO4: Ho3+/Yb3+, GdVO4: Er3+/Yb3+/Li+, GdVO4: Ho3+/Yb3+/Li+ and GdVO4: Tm3+/Er3+/Ho3+/Yb3+ systems were synthesized and characterized. The phase compositions and structure, morphologies and optical properties were investigated. In order to compare the optical properties (Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions) of obtained systems, effects and presence of different combinations of dopants and co-dopants, as well as their stoichiometric ratio were studied in details. In order to determine the potential application the systems in the thermometry their optical properties were measured as a function of temperature.XRD analysis suggests that obtained materials crystallize in the tetragonal structure without any impurities and with good crystallinity. The morphologies of the powders were recorded by transmission and scanning electron microscopes in combination with an energy dispersive analysis of X-rays. It was found that deformed (irregular) spherical particles in the range from 1.4 to about 8.4 micrometers were obtained by solid state reaction. The calculated crystallite size for these particles is about 60 nm, while in Li+ co-doped systems this size increases up to90 nm for any concentration of Li + ions...

Ko-dopiranjem ovih sistema Li+jonima veličina kristalita raste do 90 nm za bilo koju koncentraciju Li+..., The main goal of this PhD thesis was the optimization of parameters and development of the corresponding method for synthesis inorganic luminescent powders based on the rare earth ions doped gadolinium vanadate (GdVO4). AB - The surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with catecholate-type ligands having different electron donating/electron withdrawing substituent groups, specifically 3-methylcatechol, 4-methylcatechol, 3-methoxycatechol, 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 4-nitrocatechol, was found to alter the optical properties of nanoparticles in a similar way to catechol. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer (CT) complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and a reduction of the effective band gap, being slightly less pronounced in the case of electron withdrawing substituents. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of the catecholate type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From the absorption measurements (Benesi-Hildebrand plot), the stability constants in methanol/water = 90/10 solutions at pH 2 in the order of 10(3) M-1 have been determined. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal stability of CT-complexes was investigated by using TG/DSC/MS analysis. Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were compared with the experimental data.

AB - In recent years, the potential of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with different chemometric tools in food analysis has been established. This technique is rapid, low cost, and reliable and requires little sample preparation. In this work, 130 Serbian unifloral honey samples (linden, acacia, and sunflower types) were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). For each spectrum, 64 scans were recorded in wavenumbers between 4000 and 500 cm(-1) and at a spectral resolution of 4 cm(-1). These spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA), and calculated principal components were then used for support vector machine (SVM) training. In this way, the pattern-recognition tool is obtained for building a classification model for determining the botanical origin of honey. The PCA was used to analyze results and to see if the separation between groups of different types of honeys exists. Using the SVM, the classification model was built and classification errors were acquired. It has been observed that this technique is adequate for determining the botanical origin of honey with a success rate of 98.6%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that this technique offers many possibilities for future rapid qualitative analysis of honey.

AB - The surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with salicylate-type ligands consisting of an extended aromatic ring system, specifically 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, 3,5-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 3,7-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, was found to alter the optical properties of nanoparticles in a similar way to salicylic acid. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer (CT) complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and a reduction in the band gap upon the increase in the electron delocalization when including an additional ring. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of a salicylate-type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring the six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From both absorption measurements in methanol/water = 90/10 solutions and steady-state quenching measurements of modifier fluorescence upon binding to TiO2 in aqueous solutions, stability constants in the order of 10(3) M-1 have been determined at pH 2 and pH 3. Fluorescence lifetime measurements, in the presence and absence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles, indicated that the fluorescence quenching process is primarily static quenching, thus proving the formation of a nonfluorescent CT complex. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were then compared with the experimental data.

AB - Surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with catecholate-type ligands consisting of an extended aromatic ring system, i.e., 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and anthrarobin, was found to alter the optical properties of the nanoparticles in a similar way to modification with catechol. The formation of inner-sphere charge-transfer (CT) complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and the reduction of the band gap upon the increase of the electron delocalization on the inclusion of additional rings. The binding structures were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of catecholate type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring the six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, stability constants in methanol/water = 90/10 solutions at pH 2 of the order 10(3) M-1 have been determined. Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were compared with the experimental data.
