AB  - Due to the similar chemical properties of Ni2+ and Co2+, several dozens of adsorptive stripping voltammetric (AdSV) methods have been developed for their simultaneous determination. The question was would there be some benefits if a stripping method made for simultaneous determination of Ni2+ and Co2+ will be optimized for the determination of only one of them (Ni2+). It was found that the optimized method has for an order of magnitude lower LOQ (1.89×10−10 M), an order of magnitude lower influence of Co2+, and the applicability of one calibration line for four orders of magnitude of Ni2+ concentration. The influence of some common anions and cations has been examined. The developed method was successfully applied for nickel content determination in real samples. The suitability of the developed method for the determination of Co2+ from the same solution in the second run, upon optimizations of deposition potential and time, was also explored. The LOQ obtained for Co2+ (3.61×10−11 M) is almost two orders of magnitude lower than LOQ of the method for simultaneous determination of both cations and, its LOD and LOQ are among few lowest obtained by AdSV methods for Co2+ determination. The developed method for Ni2+ and Co2+ determination from the same solution in two successive runs has significantly better analytical performances than the starting method for their simultaneous determination in one run.

AB  - We present the green, highly atom-economical, solid-state silica gel-catalyzed synthesis of polysubstituted 1,4- and 1,2-dihydropyridines (DHPs) from commercially available materials, amines and ethyl propiolate. The DHP skeleton was assembled by heating the reactants and silica gel in a closed vessel. Aliphatic amines provided 1,4-isomers as the main or only DHP products, but the reactions of aromatic amines yielded a mixture of 1,4- and 1,2-isomers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the formation of a 1,2-DHP structure by the reaction of an amine with propiolic ester. Addition of 1 mass percent of H2SO4 to silica gel shifted the product distribution to 1,4-DHP as the main or the only isomer obtained. Experimental and theoretical analyses led to the identification of two key intermediates en route to DHPs and the explanation of the observed regioisomeric ratios. 1,2-DHPs show blue-cyan fluorescence in MeOH with the quantum yield Φ = 0.10–0.22 relative to quinine sulfate Φ = 0.58 and 1,4-DHPs show blue-violet fluorescence with Φ = 0.09–0.81.

AB  - Heterocyclic pharmacophores such as thiazole and quinoline rings have a significant role in medicinal chemistry. They are considered privileged structures since they constitute several Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs for cancer treatment. Herein, we report the synthesis, in silico evaluation of the ADMET profiles, and in vitro investigation of the anticancer activity of a series of novel thiazolyl-hydrazones based on the 8-quinoline (1a–c), 2-quinoline (2a–c), and 8-hydroxy-2-quinolyl moiety (3a–c). The panel of several human cancer cell lines and the nontumorigenic human embryonic kidney cell line HEK-293 were used to evaluate the compound-mediated in vitro anticancer activities, leading to [2-(2-(quinolyl-8-ol-2-ylmethylene)hydrazinyl)]-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-thiazole (3c) as the most promising compound. The study revealed that 3c blocks the cell-cycle progression of a human colon cancer cell line (HCT-116) in the S phase and induces DNA double-strand breaks. Also, our findings demonstrate that 3c accumulates in lysosomes, ultimately leading to the cell death of the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (Hep-G2) and HCT-116 cells, by the mechanism of autophagy inhibition.

AB  - Serotonin receptors modulate numerous behavioral and neuropsychological processes. Therefore, they are the target for the action of many drugs, such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, antiemetics, migraine remedies, and many others. The 5-HT1A receptors have been involved in the pathogenesis and treatment of anxiety and depression and represent a promising target for new drugs with reduced extrapyramidal side effects. In most antidepressants, a piperazine-based structural motif can be identified as a common moiety. Here we describe the synthesis, pharmacological, and in silico characterization of a novel arylpiperazines series with excellent 5-HT1A affinity. The final compounds, 4a, 8a, and 8b, were selected according to predictions of in silico pharmacokinetics, docking analysis, and molecular dynamics in conjunction with physical properties, and metabolic stability. The accentuated molecules could serve as a lead compound for developing 5-HT1A drug-like molecules for depression treatment.

Exploring fullerene derivatives for optoelectronic applications: synthesis and characterization study

AB  - In this study,we conducted a comprehensive investigation of newly synthesized fullerene derivatives developed for potential application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We explored three novel dihydrofuran-fused C60 fullerene derivatives (13, 14, and 15) that we respecifically designed to enhance solubility and interaction with the substrate, fluorine-dopedtinoxide (FTO). A comparative analysis was performed, with reference to the widely used phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and compound 12, from which 13, 14, and 15 are derived, to assess the impact of sugar units on materials properties.The synthesized compounds demonstrated significant solubility in common organic solvents, a critical factor in their potential application in wet-processed PSCs. Our investigation included electrochemical property analysis, thin film deposition, surface characterization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS measurements unveiled key in sights into charge transfer properties at the electrode/electrolyte interface, making the compounds attractive candidates for electron transport layers (ETLs) in PSCs.

AB  - The binding of ubiquitous serum ligands (free fatty acids) to human serum albumin (HSA)
or its glycation can affect thiol group reactivity, thus influencing its antioxidant activity. The effects
of stearic acid (SA) and glucose binding on HSA structural changes and thiol group content and
reactivity were monitored by fluoroscopy and the Ellman method during a 14-day incubation in
molar ratios to HSA that mimic pathophysiological conditions. Upon incubation with 5 mM glucose,
HSA glycation was the same as HSA without it, in three different HSA:SA molar ratios (HSA:SA-
1:1-2-4). The protective effect of SA on the antioxidant property of HSA under different glucose
regimes (5-10-20 mM) was significantly affected by molar ratios of HSA:SA. Thiol reactivity was fully
restored with 5–20 mM glucose at a 1:1 HSA:SA ratio, while the highest thiol content recovery was in
pathological glucose regimes at a 1:1 HSA:SA ratio. The SA affinity for HSA increased significantly
(1.5- and 1.3-fold, p < 0.01) with 5 and 10 mM glucose compared to the control. These results deepen
the knowledge about the possible regulation of the antioxidant role of HSA in diabetes and other
pathophysiological conditions and enable the design of future HSA-drug studies which, in turn, is
important for clinicians when designing information-based treatments.

AB  - The widespread abuse of traditional antibiotics has led to a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which give in return unprecedented health risks. Therefore, there is a large and urgent need for the development of new, smart antibacterial agents able to efficiently kill or inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of S, N-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) as a light-triggered antibacterial agent. Gamma irradiation was employed as a tool to achieve one-step modification of GQDs in the presence of L-cysteine amino acid as a source of heteroatoms. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and zeta potential measurements provided the necessary data to clarify the structure of modified dots and verify the introduction of both S- and N-atoms in GQDs structure, but also severe changes in the aromatic, sp2 domains. Namely, γ-irradiation caused a bonding of S atoms in 1.14 at.% mainly as thiol groups, and N in 1.81 at.% as amino groups, but sp2 contribution in GQD structure was lowered from 63.00 to 4.86 at.%, as measured in dots irradiated at a dose of 200 kGy. Fluorescence quenching measurements showed that L-cysteine-modified dots are able to bind to human serum albumin. The antibacterial activity of GQDs combined with 1 and 6 h of blue light (470 nm) irradiation was tested against 8 bacterial strains. GQD-cys-25 sample provided the best results, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as low as 125 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and E. coli after only 1 h of blue light exposure.

AB  - Manufactured nanoplastic particles (NPs) are indispensable for in vitro and in vivo testing and a health risk assessment of this emerging environmental contaminant is needed. The high surface area and inherent hydrophobicity of plastic materials makes the production of NPs devoid of any contaminants very challenging. In this study, we produced nanoprecipitated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) NPs (300 nm hydrodynamic diameter) with an overall yield of 0.76%. The presence of the ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was characterized by 1H NMR, where the relative ratio of NP/surfactant was monitored on the basis of the chemical shifts characteristic of PET and SDS. For a wide range of surfactant/NP ratios (17:100 to 1.2:100), the measured zeta potential changed from −42.10 to −34.93 mV, but with an NP concentration up to 100 μg/mL, no clear differences were observed in the cellular assays performed in protein-rich media on primary human cells. The remaining impurities contributed to the outcome of the biological assays applied in protein-free buffers, such as human red blood cell hemolysis. The presence of SDS increased the NP-induced hemolysis by 1.5% in protein-rich buffer and by 7.5% in protein-free buffer. As the size, shape, zeta potential, and contaminants of NPs may all be relevant parameters for the biological effects of NPs, the relative quantification of impurities exemplified in our work by the application of 1H NMR for PET NPs and the ionic surfactant SDS could be a valuable auxiliary method in the quality control of manufactured NPs.

AB  - Euphorbia seguieriana ssp. seguieriana Necker (ES) and Euphorbia cyparissias (EC) with a habitat in the Deliblato Sands were the subject of this examination. The latexes of these so far insufficiently investigated species of the Euphorbia genus are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds and warts on the skin. To determine their chemical composition, non-targeted screening of the latexes’ chloroform extracts was performed using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry employing an electrospray ionization source (LC-ESI QTOF MS). The analysis of the obtained results showed that the latexes of ES and EC represent rich sources of diterpenes, tentatively identified as jatrophanes, ingenanes, tiglianes, myrsinanes, premyrsinanes, and others. Examination of the anticancer activity of the ES and EC latex extracts showed that both extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the non-small cell lung carcinoma NCI-H460 and glioblastoma U87 cell lines as well as of their corresponding multi-drug resistant (MDR) cell lines, NCI-H460/R and U87-TxR. The obtained results also revealed that the ES and EC extracts inhibited the function of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in MDR cancer cells, whose overexpression is one of the main mechanisms underlying MDR.

A Simple Flow Injection System for Amperometric Detection of Ascorbic Acid using Carbon Paste/Copper Schiff Base Composite Electrode

AB  - In this paper, a simple, sensitive, and precise flow injection system was optimized and applied to ascorbic acid determination with a carbon paste electrode modified with the Schiff base copper complex. The modified sensor showed increased sensitivity toward ascorbic acid oxidation with a decrease of oxidation potential by 200 mV. Under optimized flow parameters, working potential, gasket thickness, sample and reaction coil volumes, and flow rate, the developed flow system gave a linear response from 5 to 75 μmol/L of ascorbic acid. The calculated limit of detection was 4.5 μmol/L, calculated as 3σ/s which corresponds to the absolute value of 40 ng for the 50 μL sample coil. The precision for six consecutive injections of 5 and 75 μmol/L ascorbic acid solutions was determined as a relative standard deviation of 5.8 % and 1.5 %, respectively. The flow injection system enabled up to 120 analyses per hour. An optimized flow system was applied to the determination of ascorbic acid in dietary supplements, after simple preparation.

AB  - The synthesis and characterization of four dumbbell-shaped fullerene molecules connected by isosorbide and isomannide moieties is presented. Additionally, their electrochemical behavior and their ability to form complexes with [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) were investigated. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results of the fullerene dumbbells demonstrate a high electron affinity, indicating their strong interaction with electron-donating counterparts such as carbon nanorings, which possess complementary charge and shape properties. To study the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of complexation, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was employed. NMR titration experiments provided further insights into the binding stoichiometries. Two distinct approaches were utilized to create bridged structures: one based on cyclopropane and the other based on furan. Regardless of the type of linker used, all derivatives formed conventional 2 : 1 complexes denoted as [10]CPP2 ⊃C60derivative . However, the methano-dumbbell molecules exhibited distinct binding behavior, resulting in the formation of mono- and bis-pseudorotaxanes, as well as oligomers (polymers). The formation of linear polymers holds significant potential for applications in solar energy conversion processes.

AB  - Chemotaxonomy presents various challenges that need to be overcome in order to obtain valid and reliable results. Individual genetic and environmental variations can give a false picture and lead to wrong conclusions. Applying a holistic approach, based on multivariate data analysis, these challenges can be overcome. Thus, a metabolomics approach has to be optimized depending on the subject of research. We used 1H NMR-based metabolomics as a potential chemotaxonomic tool on the selected Euphorbia species growing wild in Serbia. Principal components analysis (PCA), soft independent modeling by class analogy (SIMCA) and Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to analyze obtained NMR data in order to reveal chemotaxonomic biomarkers. The standard protocol for plant metabolomics was optimized aiming to extract more specific metabolites, which are characteristic for the Euphorbia genus. The obtained models were validated, which revealed that variables unique for each species were associated with certain classes of molecules according to literature data. In E. salicifolia, acacetin-7-O-glycoside (not found before in the species) was detected, and the structure of the aglycone part was solved based on 2D NMR data. In the presented paper, we have shown that metabolomics can be successfully used in Euphorbia chemotaxonomy.

We used 1H NMR-based metabolomics as a potential chemotaxonomic tool on the selected Euphorbia species growing wild in Serbia. Principal components analysis (PCA), soft independent modeling by class analogy (SIMCA) and Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to analyze obtained NMR data in order to reveal chemotaxonomic biomarkers. The standard protocol for plant metabolomics was optimized aiming to extract more specific metabolites, which are characteristic for the Euphorbia genus. The obtained models were validated, which revealed that variables unique for each species were associated with certain classes of molecules according to literature data. In E. salicifolia, acacetin-7-O-glycoside (not found before in the species) was detected, and the structure of the aglycone part was solved based on 2D NMR data. In the presented paper, we have shown that metabolomics can be successfully used in Euphorbia chemotaxonomy.",

Their occurrence in vascular plants was noticed in 2007, when they were found in Primula veris subsp. macrocalyx from Russia. This report prompted us to chemically analyze the two most common Serbian Primula species, P. veris subsp. columnae and P. acaulis, in order to determine the presence of bisbibenzyls in them. Our study revealed nine structurally distinct bisbibenzyls (1–9), identified based on 1D and 2D NMR, IR, UV and HRESIMS data. Among them were five previously undescribed compounds (2–6). The remaining com­ pounds found and previously described in the literature were: the bisbibenzyls riccardin C (1), isoperrottetin A (7), isoplagiochin E (8) and 11-O-demethylmarchantin I (9), as well as 4-hydroxyphenylmethylketone (10) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylmethylketone (11). Riccardin C was the most dominant bisbibenzyl in both species studied. Previously, it was the first bisbibenzyl found in vascular plants (P. veris subsp. macrocalyx). An assessment of the cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against A549 lung cancer and healthy MRC5 cell lines was also the subject of our study. Compounds 6 and 9 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity expressed by IC50 values of 12 μM, but the selectivity was not satisfactory.

AB  - The aggregation of proteins into fibrillar, amyloid-like aggregates generally results in an improved, positive effect on various techno-functional properties within food products, such as gelation, emulsification, and foam stabilization. These highly stable structures, characterized by their repetitive, β-sheet rich motifs, may develop as the result of the thermal treatment of protein-rich food products. Heavy metal ions can influence amyloid-like aggregation of food proteins. Lead(II) and cadmium(II) represent some of the most abundant and common environmental water and food pollutants. In this work, the influence of heavy metal ions, lead and cadmium on amyloid-like aggregation of ovalbumin at high temperatures (90 °C) and under acidic conditions (pH 2.0) was investigated. Ovalbumin is used as a general model for how heavy metals can affect amyloid-like aggregation of a food protein. Structural changes were monitored via Thioflavin T and 8-Anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid fluorescence, Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, as well as computational analyses. The obtained results indicate that the added heavy metal ions bind to different sites within ovalbumin prior to thermal treatment. Lead binding sites are closer to the hydrophobic regions of an protein, while cadmium ion binding sites are more exposed. This specific binding of metal ions affects the morphologies of amyloid-like aggregates, resulting in lead-induced branching of amyloid-like fibrils, or cadmium-induced tangling of fibrils into dense amyloid clusters. This additive effect of heavy metal ions is most evident in ovalbumin samples which contain a mixture of both heavy metal ions.

AB  - The biological activity of six structurally similar tetradentate Schiff base copper(II) complexes, namely [Cu(ethylenediamine-bis-acetylacetonate)] (CuAA) and five derivatives where two methyl groups are replaced by phenyl, (CuPP), CF3 (CuTT) or by mixed groups CH3/CF3 (CuAT), Ph/CF3 (CuPT), and Ph/CH3 (CuAP) has been investigated. The set of antioxidant assays was performed, and the results were expressed as IC50 and EC50 values. The series of complexes showed interesting bioactivity and were investigated for the determination of antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activity. A significant antioxidant behavior was exhibited by complex CuAA, greater than Trolox in the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay. Antibacterial assay over Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacterial strains and some fungal pathogens were studied. Antiproliferative activity of complexes in two human tumor cell lines, breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7, colon adenocarcinoma LS-174, and normal fibroblast cells-MRC-5, examined the effect on cell cycle progression. The significant cytotoxic potential, comparable to cisplatin cytotoxicity, was determined in human breast cancer cell line-MCF-7 with IC50 values being 17.53–31.40 μM and human colon cancer cell line-LS-174 with IC50 values being 15.22–23.92 μM. All tested compounds showed nearly twice more selectivity toward cancer cell lines than normal cells. The interactions of complexes with human serum albumin (HSA), the most prominent protein in plasma, were investigated using spectroscopic fluorescence techniques. The complexes bind to human serum albumin at multiple sites (n = 0.2–1.9), displaying a moderate binding constant Ka = 4.1–12.4 × 104 M−1. The molecular docking experiment effectively showed complex binding to HSA and DNA molecular fragments.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil, plant, and water samples near “Gacko” power plant, in Bosnia and Herzegovina

AB  - This study assesses heavy metal content in soil, water, and plant material from sites located around the lignite mine and the power plant “Gacko”, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The samples were collected, prepared, and analyzed for heavy metals content using the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Samples were analyzed for cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, and iron. To identify the relationship among the metals in samples and their possible sources, Pearson’s correlation and principal component analysis were performed. Health risk assessment was applied to establish potential health risks posed to humans caused by contaminants in different environmental compartments. The results of our analyses show that most soil samples contain copper, and one of those samples had a copper concentration of more than 70 µg/g, which is a critical upper value for agricultural use. In the soil samples that were analyzed, cadmium was also detected, and its concentration was greater than 2 µg/g. Lead, on the other hand, had a concentration that was higher than the maximum permissible for unpolluted soils in 40% of the soil samples that were analyzed. Lead and cadmium concentrations in surface waters mostly contribute to a non-carcinogenic risk in the scenario of recreational swimming exposure. The presence of Cd, a highly toxic element in water, may be explained by the leaching of artificial fertilizers used in the study area, whereas Pb’s origin may be geological. The results of this study recommend routine heavy metal monitoring in samples of soil, water, and plants from the examined area so that, if metal concentrations continue increasing, remedial action should be advised to prevent accumulation in the food chain.

AB  - A simple modification of bare glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization of glycine by cyclic voltammetry was applied to the detection of ibuprofen. The polyglycine modified glassy carbon electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and the electroactive surface area was determined. The study of ibuprofen in acetic acid buffer (0.25 M, pH 4.0) presented an electrocatalytic effect toward ibuprofen oxidation, increasing the current response and decrease of oxidation potential, at the modified electrode compared to the bare. Under the optimal conditions, the modified electrode gave a linear response in the ibuprofen concentration range of 10 to 200 μM, obtained correlation coefficient was 0.9993. the calculated limit of detection (3Sb/m) was 1.0 μM and the limit of quantification (10Sb/m) was 3.5 μM. the sensor was successfully used for the determination of ibuprofen in pharmaceutical preparations with satisfactory recoveries, 93–107 %. The new sensor showed good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility with satisfactory stability.

Toxic element determination in selected cosmetic products: health risk assessment

AB  - The aim of this research was to determine the content of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in selected lipsticks and face foundations of different price categories and the health risk assessment associated with these toxic elements via dermal and oral exposure. The samples (10 lipstick and 10 face foundations) were purchased from local markets in Belgrade, Serbia. The samples were prepared by acid digestion and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry (flame atomization for Cd, Pb, and Ni and electrothermal atomization for As). Arsenic was found in 50% of lipstick samples and in only two face foundation samples with the highest concentration of 0.28 mg/kg in the lipstick sample. Lead concentration was in the range of 1.15 to 5.12 mg/kg in ten samples. Nickel was found in five samples out of 20, with the highest concentration of 4.20 mg/kg. Cadmium was found in only one face foundation sample in the cheaper price range (1.11 mg/kg). The obtained results indicate that concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, and Ni were within the permissible limits according to Serbian legislation. Health risk associated with these elements was assessed as non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk. Obtained hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard indexes (HIs) were below 1, indicating the absence of significant non-carcinogenic health risk due to exposure to these toxic elements (TEs). The carcinogenic risk results show that investigated cosmetic products can be considered low-risky due to the possibility of causing malignant disease.

Stacking Interactions at Large Horizontal Displacements—Comparison of Various Ring Types

AB  - Noncovalent interactions at large distances play important role in molecular recognition processes, early steps of protein folding or design of supramolecular structures. Plateaus or even shallow minima can occur at potential energy curves of stacking interactions between certain ring types. Stacking interactions at large horizontal displacements are also frequently found in crystal structures of various rings. In this work we discuss how the horizontal displacement affects stacking interactions on the basis of interaction energy calculations and energy decomposition analysis performed by Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory (SAPT). We compared aromatic/aromatic to aromatic/aliphatic stacking as well as stacking interactions involving resonance-assisted hydrogen bridged (RAHB) rings, including RAHB/RAHB and RAHB/aromatic interactions. Among RAHB rings we observed different behavior of polar and nonpolar RAHB molecules. A comparison of aromatic/aromatic and aromatic/aliphatic systems provides an insight into fundamental differences in the nature between these two interaction types, while comparing stacking involving RAHB rings we can observe difference between polar and nonpolar RAHB rings.

AB  - Using quantum chemistry calculations and analysis of crystal structures from the
Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), three types of hydrogen bonds, NH/O, O1/HO
(hydrogen bond of a coordinated oxygen atom), and O2/HO (hydrogen bond of a noncoordinated oxygen atom) between different metal ion complexes of amino acids and a
free water molecule were studied. Octahedral cobalt(III) [1] and nickel(II), square
pyramidal copper(II), square planar copper(II), palladium(II), and platinum(II)
complexes were investigated at M06L-GD3/def2-TZVPP level, and interaction energies
were calculated using basis set superposition error (BSSE) corrected values. The NH/O
hydrogen bond of a doubly positive complex has an interaction energy of -16.9 kcal/mol.
For singly positive complexes, NH/O hydrogen bonds are weaker, from -8.3 to -12.1
kcal/mol strong, while for neutral complexes their values are the weakest, from -5.2 to -
7.2 kcal/mol. In neutral complexes with O1/HO, interaction energies are from -2.2 to -
5.1 kcal/mol, while interactions in singly negatively charged complexes are stronger,
from -6.9 to 8.2 kcal/mol. Neutral complexes also have weaker O2/HO hydrogen bonds,
from -3.7 to -5.0 kcal/mol, than the singly negatively charged systems, which have
interaction energy values from -8.0 to -9.0 kcal/mol. Therefore, the results of quantum
chemistry calculations showed that the strongest hydrogen bond is the NH/O, followed
by O1/HO, and lastly, O2/HO interaction. The results also show a strong influence of
the complex charge on the interaction energy. Other factors that influence the interaction
energy to a smaller extent are metal oxidation number, coordination number, and metal
atomic number. In the crystal structures from the CSD search, the d distributions for
copper(II) and cobalt(III) amino acid complexes are in good agreement with the quantum
chemistry results.

Validation and optimization of ion chromatography based method for citric acid determination in Robinia pseudoacacia honey

AB  - Honey is very complex natural substance consisted of sugars, water, and other compounds in smaller quantities such as proteins (enzymes), organic acids, vitamins, minerals, phenolics, and a large variety of volatile compounds. Discriminating the honeys according to botanical and/or geographical origin may be possible according to their characteristic constituents including organic acids profile. These acids are related to the colour and flavour of honey and its chemical properties such as acidity, pH and electrical conductivity. Honey is deceptively acidic, as the high sugar content tends to mask the acidity in the taste. Citric acid among other acids, is present in honey in moderate amount but it's presence could be potentially used as marker for authenticity control [1].

Fraudulent addition of compounds in honey sets a necesity to establish the natural level of the specific substances, and subsequently determine when this level is exceeded, indicating adulteration. Citric acid can be added to decrease pH in adulterated honey where normal pH levels have been exceeded. Also increased citrate concentration in honeys could be a result of addition of invert syrup to honey. Therefore there is a need for a method to determine citrate content in honey quickly and efficiently1. In current work a method for determination of organic acids profile in honey using ion chromatography with conductometric detection (IC-CD) without prior separation of compounds and chemical derivatization was developed. This approach for citric acid determination is characterized by LOD and LOQ values of 0.05 and 0.20 mg/L, respectively. Low RSD Sy/x value and r2 level of 0.9999 indicates a good regression model. Trueness of method was confirmed by good recoveries (108%, 104% and 95% for spiked levels 75%, 100% and 125%, respectively), while precision was confirmed by HorRat value (0.30) less than 2 [2].

AB  - Rhenium complexes merit particular attention in the area of metallodrug design due to
rhenium’s broad spectrum of oxidation states and consequently, the possibility to design
compounds of great structural diversity [1,2]. Thus, the synthesis, chemical characterization,
and antitumor activity in vitro of the six Re(V) complexes are described. Novel compounds
were obtained via reaction of [ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with corresponding ligands (pyridine-2-
carboxylic acid, 3-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 6-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 2,3-
pyridinedicarboxylic acid, 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) in
acetonitrile or dichloromethane/methanol at 78 °C for 3h. The complexes were fully
characterized using NMR, IR, MS, and elemental analysis. Results of X-ray diffraction analysis
for three of these compounds confirmed the proposed octahedral geometry with bidentate
coordinated ligands, via both oxygen and nitrogen atoms. The antiproliferative effect was
determined by MTT assay. All complexes expressed moderate to low cytotoxic potential.
Complex with pyridine-2-carboxylic acid showed dose-dependent cytotoxic potential,
particularly toward triple-negative breast adenocarcinoma cells MDA-MB-231 and pancreatic
adenocarcinoma cells PANC-1. Drug combination studies in PANC-1 cells with that complex
and Verapamil hydrochloride (VRP) showed a slight arrest of the cell cycle in the S phase and
also increase its antiproliferative potential.

AB  - Ruthenium complexes with dipyrido[3,2-a:2’,3’-c]phenazine (dppz) ligands have been
extensively investigated as potential anticancer agents due to possibility of modulation of their
intracellular accumulation and respective anticancer mechanism of action [1,2]. In recent years
we have explored the anticancer activity of a variety of ruthenium(II)-arene complexes with
dppz based ligands and some of them demonstrated remarkable cytotoxic activity [3].
Following these studies here we present a series of Ru(II)-arene complexes with the general
formula [(η6-arene)Ru(dppz-R)Cl]PF6, where arene fragment was benzene, toluene or pcymene and R was -NO2, -Me or -COOMe with aim to study influence of both of half-sandwich
Ru(II)-arene fragments and the variation of dppz ligands on improvement of the therapeutic
potential of those complexes. All compounds were fully characterized by physico-chemical
methods. The anticancer activity of dppz ligands and respective Ru complexes was assessed
against MDA-MB-231, HCT116 and CT26 cancer cell lines and healthy MRC5 lung
fibroblasts. In vivo efficacy of lead Ru-dppz complex revealed significantly reduction of tumor
burden in mice with colorectal cancers without inducing liver and kidney toxicity. Thus, all the
results indicated that introducing appropriate dppz into ruthenium-arene scaffold was a
promising strategy for developing potent antitumor agents.
