AB  - In this work, Pt(II) complexes of previously synthesized steroidal thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and characterized. The ligands and their metal complexes were studied by analytical and spectroscopic data (elemental analysis, IR, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, COSY), the analysis of which enabled complete 1H and 13C assignments of each compound including E and Z isomers. All the synthesized ligands and complexes were screened for their cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity. The results demonstrate that the new steroidal thiosemicarbazone complexes were significantly less cytotoxic than the corresponding steroidal thiosemicarbazones. In addition, complexes showed lower antimicrobial activity than the standard drugs, similar to the activity of the starting thiosemicarbazones.

Zn(II) complex possesses a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry while surroundings around Bi(III) ion are extended pentagonal bipyramidal. AB  - Antioxidants present in infant food contribute to its nutritive value and provide protection from oxidative damage. Here, a direct current polarographic method, based on a decrease of anodic current from the hydroxoperhydroxo-mercury(II) complex (HPMC) formed at a mercury dropping electrode at its potential of dissolution, was used to determine the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of infant formulas, human milk collected from mothers of full-term and preterm infants, human milk supplemented with fortifier, and cow milk. TAC of milk samples and infant formula correlated with protein content measured by the Bradford method (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.605, p<0.001), while TAC of human milk correlated with content of free thiol groups measured by the Ellman method (0.779, p<0.001). The results obtained showed that, in contrast to the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, HPMC enables specific insight into the quality of infant milk food which reflects the amounts of free thiol groups and protein content. The significant contribution of milk proteins and the most prevalent amino acids, particularly cysteine, arginine, and phenylalanine, to TAC was shown. Thus, the HPMC method might be useful in monitoring the quality of infant formulas and human milk for preterm infants before and after supplementation with fortifier.

AB  - The aim of this research was to verify the authenticity of monofloral honeys from the territory of the Republic of Serbia on the basis of physicochemical parameters routinely measured in honey quality control using multivariate analysis. Seventeen samples of monofloral honey (11 samples of acacia honey and 6 samples of sunflower honey) from the territory of the Republic of Serbia were analyzed. Physicochemical analysis of the samples included the examination of basic quality parameters and qualitative and quantitative analyses of phenolic compounds. In the samples tested, a total of 93 phenolic compounds were tentatively identified, and 19 of them were quantified. The obtained physicochemical analysis of the data served as input for the multivariate analysis. The hеаt map, which is useful for visualizing numerical data, was used for this purpose. The obtained results showed that the applied data can serve to clearly separate acacia and sunflower honeys.

The group of samples synthesized by microemulsion, microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, and mechanochemical method showed less pronounced rate of chain formation. Such measurements present good method for the preliminary selection of possible magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents between differently synthesized ferrite suspensions.

AB  - The oil pollutant in the Sava River aquifer in the residential area of Belgrade, Serbia was investigated in order to analyze the extent, origin and spatial distribution of the pollution, with the aim to estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the compounds detected. Analytical methods indicated that the dominant compounds in this oil pollutant were gasoline range organic compounds. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) were identified as compounds of concern and quantified by headspace gas chromatography. The concentrations of benzene measured at all sampling points were higher than the remediation value while the maximum concentrations of BTEX quantified were among the highest concentrations of these compounds reported in the petroleum-contaminated aquifers in the world. The assessment of the human health risks from exposure to BTEX-covered industrial scenario for adult receptors and residential scenario for adult receptors and children. The exposure routes analyzed were dermal contact with and ingestion of contaminated water, considering both cancer and non-cancer effects. The analysis of the lifetime incremental cancer risk indicated the potential for adverse health effects for human exposure at the investigated location, and because of that it was interpreted as an unacceptable risk level or risks of high priority which required immediate consideration for remedial measures at this location. A complete set of mitigation measures was proposed including: groundwater decontamination treatment, installation of filters for tap water, development of the system for monitoring of BTEX in the groundwater and development of the emergency response capacities at this location.

AB  - The electrochemical characterization of sertraline at gold electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry measurements (CV) in pH 8.4 bicarbonate buffer. Then Au electrode was evaluated for the quantitative determination of sertraline using square wave voltammetry (SWV). To enhance the sensitivity during the drug determination, (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) and β-cyclodextrin (βCD) inclusion complexes were employed. Using the proposed SWV technique, the anodic current peak was linear within a concentration range of 0.1–0.5 µM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.0 × 10–8 M and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 6.7 × 10–8 M. In the case of inclusion complex of the sertraline with HPβCD, a good linearity range of 0.1–0.9 µM was obtained with a LOD of 2.6 × 10–8 M and a LOQ of 8.8 × 10–8 M. The gold electrode revealed the same linearity range for inclusion complex of the sertraline with βCD with a LOD and a LOQ being 2.6 × 10–8 and 8.6 × 10–8 M, respectively. Comparing the regression equations, it can be concluded that the sensitivity in the presence of inclusion complex can be up to 5 times higher. The applicability of the developed method was confirmed by the analysis of this drug in pharmaceutical formulation and in human serum spiked with sertraline standard. The comparison to HPLC method was successfully performed.

Bio-membrane based on modified cellulose, lignin, and tannic acid for cation and oxyanion removal: Experimental and theoretical study

AB  - Two optimized methods, based on epoxy-amino reactivity of the Cellulose fibres (Cell) modified with diethylenetriamine (Cell‒DETA), (3-Glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (Cell-Glymo), Lignin modified with epichlorohydrine (EL) and Tannic acid (TA), as an additional crosslinker, were developed for the production of the bio-renewable Cell-EL and Cell-EL-TA membranes. The influences of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and temperature on adsorption performances were studied by batch adsorption tests. The calculated capacities: 53.9, 99.9, 97.8 and 63.5, 115.8, 127.5 mg g−1 for Ni2+, Pb2+, Cr(VI) using Cell-EL and Cell-EL-TA, respectively, were obtained from Langmuir model fitting at 25 °C. The thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous and low endothermic processes. The results of the kinetic study, i.e. pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Weber-Morris (W-M), suggest an intra-particle diffusion as a rate-limiting step. The semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations aided the analysis of the non-specific and specific adsorbent/adsorbate interactions and their contribution to the overall bonding mechanism. Membrane utility was confirmed by performing a bed column study. In general, three main environmental issues of the present study, biodegradability of the used membrane, desorption efficiency, and development of the technology for the effective effluent water treatment and safe disposal of by-products highly conform to the demand of integrated environmental management system applicability in practice.

AB  - Novel polyurethane nanocomposite (PUN) materials containing different surface-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared by in situ polymerization methodology. Polyurethane network was formed from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based macrodiol (PDMS), 4,4′-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate (MDI), and hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo-generation (BH-20; used as crosslinking agent). PU and PU/MSN nanocomposites contained equal ratios of soft PDMS and hard MDI-BH-20 segments. Non-functionalized and surface-functionalized (with 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl methylphosphonate (FOMSN) and 2-[methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)6−9propyl]trimethoxysilane (PEGMSN)) MSNs were used as the nanofillers at a concentration of 1 wt%. Prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analyses (DMTA), nanoindentation, equilibrium swelling and water absorption measurements. Characteristics of the prepared PUNs when in contact with a biological environment were assessed through testing their biocompatibility, protein adsorption and adhesion of endothelial cells. The favourable influence of MSNs on the physico-chemical and biological characteristics of these novel PUN materials was identified, which evidences their vast applicability potential as coatings for medical devices and implants.

AB  - The main biologically active components of plants belonging to the genus Allium, responsible for their biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory, are organosulfur compounds. The aim of this study was to synthetize the mixture of dipropyl polysulfides (DPPS) and to test their biological activity in acute hepatitis. C57BL/6 mice were administered orally with DPPS 6 h before intravenous injection of Concanavalin A (ConA). Liver inflammation, necrosis and hepatocytes apoptosis were determined by histological analyses. Cytokines in liver tissue were determined by ELISA, expression of adhesive molecules and enzymes by RT PCR, while liver mononuclear cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. DPPS pretreatment significantly attenuated liver inflammation and injury, as evidenced by biochemical and histopathological observations. In DPPS-pretreated mice, messenger RNA levels of adhesion molecules and NADPH oxidase complex were significantly reduced, while the expression of SOD enzymes was enhanced. DPPS pretreatment decreased protein level of inflammatory cytokines and increased percentage of T regulatory cells in the livers of ConA mice. DPPS showed hepatoprotective effects in ConA-induced hepatitis, characterized by attenuation of inflammation and affection of Th17/Treg balance in favor of T regulatory cells and implicating potential therapeutic usage of DPPS mixture in inflammatory liver diseases.

AB  - L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), the precursor of dopamine, is widely used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, thus determining and monitoring the concentration of L-DOPA is of utmost importance for both medical and scientific purposes. Although many analytical approaches, designed for drug detection and quantification, already exist, there is a constant need for modification of old and tailoring of new, faster, and selective methods. Redox active chemical species, such as L-DOPA, can be measured directly by electrochemical means, whereas electrochemical sensors combine sensitivity and selectivity within a small analytical device. This work demonstrates the development of such electrochemical sensor, based on carboxylated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-COOH) decorated with SiO2 coated-Nd2O3 nanoparticles, and further application for the detection of L-DOPA. Developed SWCNT-COOH@Nd2O3-SiO2 sensor shows linear response in the range from 2 µmol L−1 to 52 µmol L−1 analyte concentration, and beside the low detection limit, it is characterized by a fast response time, as well as good life-time, reproducibility and repeatability.

Recovery tests indicate excellent accuracy and precision of the method, concluding that the biosensor can offer a fast, accurate, reliable and precise determination of the polyphenolic index. More importantly, our results suggest a great potential for the application in real samples.

AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3and Fe2O3was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300°C for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 °C for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3with Fe2O3resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature. © 2021 Authors. AB  - In this manuscript, samples of Kupa River sediments were examined using three different extraction agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of single extraction procedures to investigate the bioavailability and mobility of major and trace elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Si, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn) from river sediment. Two forms of studied elements were evaluated: mobile, the most toxic element form (extraction with 1 M CH3COONH4 and 0.01 M CaCl2) and potentially mobilized form (2 M HNO3 extraction). The estimation of the ecological risk, with the application of the probability distribution of RI (potential ecological risk index) values, is yielded with the help of the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Ammonium acetate is proved to be a better extraction agent than calcium chloride. A positive correlation between the content of all extracted elements with nitric acid and the total element content indicates that 2 M HNO3 efficiently extracts all studied elements. Results showed anthropogenic sources of cadmium and copper and high barium mobility. The MCS suggests that risk of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn was low; As and Cd posed a lower and median ecological risk in the studied areas.

Amide-π interactions in active centers of superoxide dismutase

AB  - In this work, the influence of amide–π interactions on stability and properties of superoxide dismutase (SOD) active centres was analysed. In the data set of 43 proteins, 5017 amide–π interactions were observed, and every active centre formed averagely about 117 interactions. Most of the interactions belonged to the backbone of proteins. The analysis of the geometry of the amide–π interactions revealed two preferred structures, parallel-displaced and T-shaped structure. The aim of this study was to investigate the energy contribution resulting the from amide–π interactions, which were in the lower range of strong hydrogen bonds. The conservation patterns in the present study indicate that more than half of the residues involved in these interactions are evolutionarily conserved. The stabilization centres for these proteins showed that all residues involved in amide–π interactions were of use in locating one or more of such centres. The results presented in this work can be very useful for the understanding of contribution of amide–π interaction to the stability of SOD active centres.

AB  - Duckweed (L. minor) is a cosmopolitan aquatic plant of simplified morphology and rapid vegetative reproduction. In this study, an H. paralvei bacterial strain and its influence on the antioxidative response of the duckweeds to phenol, a recalcitrant environmental pollutant, were investigated. Sterile duckweed cultures were inoculated with H. paralvei in vitro and cultivated in the presence or absence of phenol (500 mg L−1), in order to investigate bacterial effects on plant oxidative stress during 5 days. Total soluble proteins, guaiacol peroxidase expression, concentration of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde as well as the total ascorbic acid of the plants were monitored. Moreover, bacterial production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was measured in order to investigate H. paralvei’s influence on plant growth. In general, the addition of phenol elevated all biochemical parameters in L. minor except AsA and total soluble proteins. Phenol as well as bacteria influenced the expression of guaiacol peroxidase. Different isoforms were associated with phenol compared to isoforms expressed in phenol-free medium. Considering that duckweeds showed increased antioxidative parameters in the presence of phenol, it can be assumed that the measured parameters might be involved in the plant’s defense system. H. paralvei is an IAA producer and its presence in the rhizosphere of duckweeds decreased the oxidative stress of the plants, which can be taken as evidence that this bacterial strain acts protectively on the plants during phenol exposure.

Cell-MG membrane was structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR and FE-SEM techniques. The influences of operational parameters, i.e. pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass of adsorbent on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch system. The calculated capacities of 35.32 and 30.16 mg g-1 for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione, respectively, were obtained from non-linear Langmuir model fitting. Weber-Morris model fitting indicates the main contribution of intra-particle diffusion to overall mass transport resistance. Thermodynamic data indicate spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. The reusability of adsorbent and results from wastewater purification showed that Cell-MG could be used as general-purpose adsorbent. The adsorbent/adsorbate surface interaction was considered from the results obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Thus, a better understanding of the relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions to adsorption performances and design of novel adsorbent with improved properties was deduced

AB  - The mutual impact of low-quality lignite and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during open system pyrolysis was investigated, aiming to improve utilization of lignite with simultaneous treatment of HDPE waste. Pyrolysis of lignite, HDPE, and their mixture (mass ratio, 1:1) was performed at temperatures 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C. Initial substrates and pyrolysis products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), specific carbon isotope analysis of individual hydrocarbons (δ13C), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and elemental analysis. The positive synergetic effect during co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture was observed at temperatures ≥450 °C, with the greatest being at 500 °C. The highest yield of liquid co-pyrolysis products with a similar composition to that of crude oils is also noticed at 500 °C. The yields of liquid and gaseous products and quality of pyrolytic products obtained by co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture are notably improved compared with pyrolysis of lignite alone. On the other hand, data obtained from pyrolysis of HDPE alone indicate that it cannot be concurrent to well-developed catalytic thermal processes for polymer recycling. However, concerning the huge amount of produced HDPE, at least part of this plastic material can be reused for advanced thermal treatment of lignite, particularly in countries where this low-rank coal represents the main source of energy.

AB  - The study investigated the influence of maturity, biomass type, and depositional settings on the distribution and relative abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for lacustrine sediments collected from depths up to 1000 m of Prebreza and Čučale stratigraphic units (the northwest part of the Toplica Basin). A recently proposed benzo[ghi]perylene/(perylene + benzo[ghi]perylene) parameter, along with commonly used Phenanthrene Alkylation Index and benzo[e]pyrene/(perylene + benzo[e]pyrene) indices, pointed out differences in maturity levels between stratigraphic units by displaying a positive linear relationship with vitrinite reflectance. However, in several immature Prebreza sediments, a substantial presence of algae and/or anoxic, mesosaline/hypersaline conditions were suitable for forming β-substituted methylphenanthrenes and 6-ring benzo[ghi]perylene. Generally, high molecular weight unsubstituted PAHs (HMWPAHs), particularly perylene, predominated Prebreza sediments. Anoxic conditions appeared to be decisive for accumulating and preserving the perylene carbon skeleton in studied stratigraphic units. Besides, more intense volcanism in the Čučale unit favored combustion processes, which prompted the accumulation of low molecular weight unsubstituted PAHs (LMWPAHs), especially phenanthrene. A general prevalence of retene over cadalene in Prebreza sediments, in which alginite and liptodetrinite predominated, implied algae as retene precursor. Selective degradation of retene or hindered demethylation of 9-methylphenanthrene under anoxic and more saline environmental settings had occurred notably in the Prebreza unit, which led to the formation of 1-methylphenanthrene and/or pimanthrene (1,7-dimethylphenanthrene). Čučale sediments with substantial amounts of vitrinite macerals or saturated diterpenoids had a predominant simonellite derived from conifers. Non-degraded and well-preserved Pinaceae conifers predominated in Prebreza sediments deposited under semi-arid climatic conditions, whereas mixed degraded/non-degraded conifers characterized Čučale sediments deposited in a wide range of climatic conditions, from semi-arid to semi-humid. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

A recently proposed benzo[ghi]perylene/(perylene + benzo[ghi]perylene) parameter, along with commonly used Phenanthrene Alkylation Index and benzo[e]pyrene/(perylene + benzo[e]pyrene) indices, pointed out differences in maturity levels between stratigraphic units by displaying a positive linear relationship with vitrinite reflectance. However, in several immature Prebreza sediments, a substantial presence of algae and/or anoxic, mesosaline/hypersaline conditions were suitable for forming β-substituted methylphenanthrenes and 6-ring benzo[ghi]perylene. Generally, high molecular weight unsubstituted PAHs (HMWPAHs), particularly perylene, predominated Prebreza sediments. Anoxic conditions appeared to be decisive for accumulating and preserving the perylene carbon skeleton in studied stratigraphic units. Besides, more intense volcanism in the Čučale unit favored combustion processes, which prompted the accumulation of low molecular weight unsubstituted PAHs (LMWPAHs), especially phenanthrene. A general prevalence of retene over cadalene in Prebreza sediments, in which alginite and liptodetrinite predominated, implied algae as retene precursor. Selective degradation of retene or hindered demethylation of 9-methylphenanthrene under anoxic and more saline environmental settings had occurred notably in the Prebreza unit, which led to the formation of 1-methylphenanthrene and/or pimanthrene (1,7-dimethylphenanthrene). Čučale sediments with substantial amounts of vitrinite macerals or saturated diterpenoids had a predominant simonellite derived from conifers. Non-degraded and well-preserved Pinaceae conifers predominated in Prebreza sediments deposited under semi-arid climatic conditions, whereas mixed degraded/non-degraded conifers characterized Čučale sediments deposited in a wide range of climatic conditions, from semi-arid to semi-humid. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.",
