AB - In the reaction of acetone solutions of CoX2∙nH2O (X = Cl, Br) with methyl pyruvate semi/thiosemicarbazone (Hmps, Hmpt) the first Co(II) complexes with these ligands, i.e., [Co(Hmps)(H2O)X2] (X = Cl (1), Br (2)), [Co(Hmpt)2][CoCl4]∙2H2О (3) and [Co(Hmpt)2]Br2∙Me2CO (4) were obtained. Complexes 1 and 2 represent the first examples of metal complexes of Hmps. All the obtained compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, conductometry, magnetic measurements, and IR spectra, and for complexes 2–4, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was also performed. The effective magnetic moments were close to the upper limit (5 μB) for complexes 1 and 2, and close to the lower limit (4.4 μB) for complexes 3 and 4, and as such are characteristic for high-spin Co(II) complexes. Structural analysis showed that both ligands coordinate in a neutral form in a tridentate manner, via the ester oxygen, imine nitrogen and the oxygen atom of the ureido (Hmps), or the sulfur atom of the thioureido group (Hmpt). The central metal atoms are situated in a deformed octahedral coordination environment. Complex 2 has cis-Br configuration, while complexes 3 and 4 have mer-configuration.

AB - Two new nitrato complexes of zinc and nickel with 1,4,8,11-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc), have been synthesized and characterized. The IR spectral peaks showed that the coordinated and ionic nitrate ions are in agreement with the formula proposed by elemental analysis. Conductometric titrations predicted methanol to be a convenient solvent for synthesis and revealed the stoichiometry of the complexes, while molar electrical conductivities indicated a 1 : 3 complex electrolyte type for the zinc complex, and a 1 : 2 complex electrolyte type for the nickel complex. The optimized complex structure was obtained by molecular modeling and density functional theory calculations. The biological activity of the novel complexes was examined by screening eight different bacterial strains and two cancer cell lines. The zinc complex showed better antimicrobial activity against the bacterial strains, while the complexes did not show significance antiproliferative activity toward cancer cells MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231.

AB - A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical–scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation.

AB - The syntheses, physico-chemical and microbiological properties of the ligand, 2-acetylpyridine-aminoguanidine dihydrogensulfate monohydrate and its five complexes with Cu(II) are described. The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Common fragments encountered in some of the structures were compared by r.m.s. overlay calculations as well as half-normal probability plots. In these complexes the chelate ligand is coordinated in its neutral form in a tridentate N-3-coordination mode, via pyridine, azomethine and imino nitrogen atoms of the aminoguanidine fragment. In these complexes the Cu(II) ion is situated in moderately or severely distorted square-pyramidal surroundings. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and the complexes were examined against 6 selected bacterial and 3 fungal strains. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Synthetic paths toward the two polymorphs of a monohydrate, one anhydrous polymorph of 1-carboxamidino-5-hydroxy-3-methylpyrazole (hcmp) and two polymorphs of zinc complexes containing hcmp ligand are presented. By choosing ions which are not part of the final product, it is possible to direct the synthesis toward the particular polymorph. In all three modifications of hcmp, the same hydrogen bonding motif appears, leading to formation of similar molecular chains. Differences arise due to different modes of chain aggregation and the presence of solvent water. Analysis of the crystal packing and the energetic features of hcmp polymorphs is made using the PIXEL model. The thermal decomposition processes are examined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. Analysis of crystal packing in the two polymorphs of zinc complex suggests the key role of the hydrogen bonding capacity of the aqua ligand for the appearance of the two polymorphic forms. In both polymorphs of zinc complex, stacking interactions have an important role. However, the enhanced hydrogen bonding capacity of the aqua ligand influences the formation of multistacking arrangement.

AB - Phenothiazines are a large group of heterocyclic, aromatic molecules with nitrogen and sulphur between two benzene rings. Their derivatives, N-alkylphenothiazines have substituent on heterocyclic nitrogen atom which gives them different properties. Also, a series of these molecules have substitution on carbon atom at place 2 of phenothiazine benzene ring. Alkylphenothiazines contain aminoalkyl substituent and their alkyl, acyl and sulphonil derivatives, as well as monocyclic and bicyclic heterocycles attached at thiazine nitrogen atom or directly linked to benzene ring. The N-alkylphenothiazines have been known as antipsychotic drugs, but they also possess antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer activity, and ability to react with macromolecules and to coordinate to the metals. Metal complexes with N-alkylphenothiazines are biological active compounds with different antimicrobial activities and cytotoxic effect against tumor cell lines. The large field of application of N-alkylphenothiazines is very attractive in terms of synthesis of new related derivatives, metal complexes, studying their properties and applications. This article presents a review of the literature and a contemporary view at N-alkylphenothiazines - their synthesis and application, as well as their metal complexes which have promising biological effects.

AB - The purpose of the present study was to investigate and compare the effects of two ruthenium complexes with trifl uoperazine on acethylcholinesterase enzyme activity and lactate dehydrogenase levels in vivo under physiological conditions in rats blood. Complexes 1 and 2 showed positive effects on acethylcholinesterase at all doses and did not disturb its normal activity. Total LDH activity was inhibited in the presence of both complexes, but Ru(II) complexes showed different effects on the activity of LDH isoenzymes. The activities of LDH1 and LDH2 isoenzymes were decreased in all applied doses of the complex 2, while the activity of LDH2 reduced using complex 1 in the same doses. Results of the present study suggest the neuro-and cardio protective potential of oral administration of complexes 1 and 2, as non-toxic compounds under physiological conditions. These protective effects are the result of their potent antioxidant activity.

AB - Five pentacoordinate copper(II) complexes with 2-acetylpyridine or di(2-pyridyl) ketone 1-adamantoyl hydrazone ligands (Adpy and Addpy, respectively) of the formulae [CuCl2(Adpy)] (1), [Cu-2(-Cl)(2)(Adpy-H)(2)] (2), [Cu(NCS)(2)(Adpy)] (3), [Cu-2(-Cl)(2)(Addpy-H)(2)] (4), and [Cu-2(NCS)(2)(-Addpy-H)(2)] (5) were synthesized and characterized by spectral, electrochemical, and X-ray structural analysis. Flow cytometry and morphological analysis confirmed that the copper(II) complexes 2 and 5 induced accumulation of a sub-G1 phase population, and fluorescence microscopy indicated the presence of large cells in apoptosis. The interaction of the copper(II) complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was monitored by changes in their UV/Vis spectra. The observed intrinsic binding constants for 2 and 5 (K-b = 1.77x10(6) and 3.58x10(6) M-1, respectively) together with ethidium displacement fluorescence experiments indicate intercalative binding. Complexes 2 and 5 showed nuclease activity against pUC19 plasmid DNA.

AB - The synthesis of a potentially bioactive mixed-valence Co-III/Co-II complex with 2-acetylpyridine S-methylisothiosemicarbazone (HL) ligand is described. The crystal and molecular structure of the formed [(CoL2)-L-III][(CoCl3)-Cl-II py]center dot Me2CO (I) compound (py stands for pyridine) is determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It's thermal decomposition along with the decomposition of the ligand and six structurally related complexes with formulas [CoL2]NO3 center dot MeOH (1), [CoL2]Br center dot MeOH (2), [CoL2]HSO4 center dot MeOH (3), [CoL2](2)[Co-II(NCS)(4)] (4), [Co(HL)(L)]I-2 center dot 2MeOH (5), and [Co(HL)(L)][(CoCl4)-Cl-II]center dot MeOH (6) was determined by simultaneous TG/DSC measurements. The decomposition pattern is evaluated using TG/DTA-MS data. The results were related to the solvent/moisture content and the decomposition mechanism of the compounds. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and of all the complexes was tested in vitro for selected gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and fungi. The activity of the ligand against all tested bacteria is comparable with those obtained for standard antibiotics, while it is less active against fungi. Surprisingly, the activity of the complexes is very low. The low antimicrobial activity of the complexes may be in connection with their high thermodynamic and kinetic inertness in solution. The results are also supported by the relatively high thermal stability of the complexes.

AB - Two new platinum(IV) complexes (1, trifluoperazinehydrochloride-aquapentachloridoplatinate(IV) and 2, chlorpromazine-chlorpromazinehydrochloridepentachloridoplatinate(IV)) were synthesized in the reaction of K-2[PtCl6] with trifluoperazine dihydrochloride (TF center dot 2HCl) or chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CP center dot HCl). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity measurement, and spectral (IR, H-1, C-13, 2D H-1-C-13 heteronuclear correlation spectra, Pt-195 NMR, and MS) methods. Outer-coordination sphere was proposed for 1; while in 2, the ligand was coordinated to the metal. The complexes exhibit antibacterial effect on strains of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus pumilus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococci as Gram-positive bacteria and an Escherichia coli as Gram-negative bacteria, as well as the reference strains.

AB - Five new dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes of the general formula [MoO2(Rdtc)(2)], 1-5, where Rdtc(-) refer to piperidine (Pipdtc), 4-morpholine (Morphdtc), 4-thiomorpholine (Timdtc), piperazine (Pzdtc) or N-methylpiperazine (N-Mepzdtc) dithiocarbamates, respectively, have been prepared. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductometric measurements, electronic, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The complexes 1-5 contain a cis-MoO2 group and have an octahedral geometry. Two dithiocarbamato ions join as bidentates with both the sulfur atoms to the molybdenum atom. The presence of different heteroatoms in the piperidino moiety influences the v(C=N) and v(C=S) vibrations, which wavelengths decrease in the order: Pipdtc gt N-Mepzdtc gt Morphdtc gt Pzdtc gt Timdtc ligands. Based on their spectral data, the molecular structures of complexes 1-5 were optimized at the semi-empirical molecular-orbital level, and the geometries, as obtained from calculations, are described. The antimicrobial activities of the complexes were tested against nine different laboratory control strains of bacteria and two strains of the yeast Candida albicans. All the tested strains were sensitive. Complexes bearing heteroatom in position 4 of piperidine moiety were significantly more potent against the tested bacteria compared to the corresponding ligands.

AB - Three new ruthenium(II) complexes 1-3 containing N-alkylphenothiazine molecules were synthesized by reaction of [RuCl2(eta(6)-P-cymene)](2) with chlorpromazine hydrochloride (1), trifluoperazine dihydrochloride (2) or thioridazine hydrochloride (3). The compounds of the general formula L[RuCl3(eta(6)-p-cymene)] were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, UV-Vis, H-1 and C-13 NMR). Complex 2 was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In vitro cytotoxic activity of complexes 1-3 were assayed in four human carcinoma cell lines MCF-7, MDA-MB-453 (breast carcinoma), SW-480 (colon carcinoma) and IM9 (myeloma multiple cells). The highest cytotoxicity (12.1 lt = IC50 lt = 17.3 mu M) and induced a total (SW-480) or almost total cell death (MCF-7. MDA-MB-453) at 25 mu M in 48 h of treatment were observed for complex 2. The influence of three different doses (0.4, 4.5 and 90.4 mu M/kg bw) of complex 2 on activities of antioxidants enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were investigated under physiological conditions. The effects on nitrite production (NO2-) and level of erythrocytes malondialdehyde (MDA) in rats blood were evaluated, too. (C) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

AB - New cationic Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes with N,N',N '',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and the anion of 2-amino-3-phenylpropanoic acid (S-phenylalanine) were prepared. The complexes were analyzed and characterized by elemental analysis, conductometric, polarimetric, magnetic and cyclic voltammetric measurements, as well as by spectroscopic data (UV/Vis, IR). Both complexes are binuclear with the general formula [M(2)(S-Phe)tpmc](ClO(4))(3)center dot nH(2)O; S-PheH = S-phenylalanine, M(II) = Cu, n = 7; Co, n = 0. Based on previously reported data for some familiar complexes and the present results, pentacoordinated geometry was proposed. Both of the central metal ions are coordinated with two pyridyl and two cyclam nitrogens and bridged with -N-(CH(2))(3)-N-portions of the cyclam ring and oxygen atoms of the S-phenylalaninate ion. Antimicrobial screening of the complexes, solvent, starting salts and ligands alone was performed against fungi, mould and some bacteria. In certain cases, enhanced activity of Co(II) complex towards bacteria compared with the relevant free ligands and starting salts was detected.
AB - Dobijena su dva nova kompleksa Cu(II) i Co(II) sa N,N',N',N'''-tetrakis(2-piridilmetil)-1,4,8,11-ciklotetradekanom (tpmc-om) i anjonom 2-amino-3-fenil-propanske kiseline (S-fenilalanina). Oni su analizirani i okarakterisani: elementalnom analizom, konduktometrijskim, polarimetrijskim, magnetnim i ciklično-voltametrijskim merenjima, kao i spektroskopskim podacima (UV/Vis, IR). Oba kompleksa su dinuklearna opšte formule [M2(S-Phe)tpmc](ClO4)3·nH2O; S-PheH = S-fenilalanin, M(II) = Cu, n = 7; Co, n = 0.
