AB - Y0.8−xGdxF3:Yb/Er mesocrystals with a biocompatible surface and diverse morphological characteristics were successfully synthesized using chitosan-assisted solvothermal processing. Their structural properties, studied using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were further correlated with the up-conversion emission (λexc = 976 nm) recorded in function of temperature. Based on the change in the visible green emissions originating from the thermally coupled 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels of Er3+, the corresponding LIR was acquired in the physiologically relevant range of temperatures (25–50 °C). The detected absolute sensitivity of about 0.0042 °C−1, along with the low cytotoxicity toward both normal human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) and cancerous lung epithelial (A549) cells, indicate a potential for use in temperature sensing in biomedicine. Additionally, their enhanced internalization in cells, without suppression of cell viability, enabled in vitro labeling of cancer and healthy cells upon 976 nm laser irradiation.

AB - The widespread abuse of traditional antibiotics has led to a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which give in return unprecedented health risks. Therefore, there is a large and urgent need for the development of new, smart antibacterial agents able to efficiently kill or inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of S, N-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) as a light-triggered antibacterial agent. Gamma irradiation was employed as a tool to achieve one-step modification of GQDs in the presence of L-cysteine amino acid as a source of heteroatoms. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and zeta potential measurements provided the necessary data to clarify the structure of modified dots and verify the introduction of both S- and N-atoms in GQDs structure, but also severe changes in the aromatic, sp2 domains. Namely, γ-irradiation caused a bonding of S atoms in 1.14 at.% mainly as thiol groups, and N in 1.81 at.% as amino groups, but sp2 contribution in GQD structure was lowered from 63.00 to 4.86 at.%, as measured in dots irradiated at a dose of 200 kGy. Fluorescence quenching measurements showed that L-cysteine-modified dots are able to bind to human serum albumin. The antibacterial activity of GQDs combined with 1 and 6 h of blue light (470 nm) irradiation was tested against 8 bacterial strains. GQD-cys-25 sample provided the best results, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as low as 125 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and E. coli after only 1 h of blue light exposure.

AB - This paper presents sustainable technology for environmentally friendly composite production. Biobased unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR), synthesized from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycosylate and renewable origin maleic anhydride (MAnh) and propylene glycol (PG), was reinforced with unmodified and vinyl-modified biosilica nanoparticles obtained from rice husk. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained particles, b-UPR, as well as composites, were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The study of the influence of biosilica modification on the mechanical properties of composites was supported by hardness modeling. Improvement of the tensile strength of the b-UPR-based composite at 2.5 wt.% addition of biosilica modified with vinyl silane, named “b-UPR/SiO2-V” composite, has been achieved with 88% increase. The thermal aging process applied to the b-UPR/SiO2-V composite, which simulates use over the product’s lifetime, leads to the deterioration of composites that were used as fillers in commercial unsaturated polyester resin (c-UPR). The grinded artificially aged b-UPR composites were used as filler in c-UPR for the production of a table top layer with outstanding mechanical properties, i.e., impact resistance and microhardness, as well as fire resistance rated in the V-0 category according to the UL-94 test. Developing sustainable composites that are chemically synthesized from renewable sources is important from the aspect of preserving the environment and existing resources as well as the extending their life cycle.

AB - In this investigation, samples of SrGd2O4 doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4, 6 at.%) ions and constant Ho3+ (1 at.%) and Bi3+ (2 at.%) concentrations were prepared. The sol-gel method with glycine as a fuel and citric acid as a chelator was chosen for sample preparation. All samples were heated in the furnace for 1.5 h at 500 °C and then thermally treated for 2.5 h at 1000 °C. The pure orthorhombic lattice of SrGd2O4, space group Pnma, was revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (JCPDS Card No.:01-072-6387). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring around 150 nm in size. Including Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology of the sample showing fine packing of pyramidal-shaped nanoparticles. The uniform distribution of constitutive elements in the samples was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Up-conversion emission properties were evaluated from photoluminescent emission spectra and intensity dependence on excitation power after excitation at 976 nm. Dominant green (550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) 5F4, 5S2 → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, 5F4, 5S2 → 5I7 transition emissions, respectively, are detected in all samples. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emission.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate for the first-time photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue over SrGd2O4 powders co-doped with constant Er3+ (0.5 at.%) and different Yb3+ (1, 2.5 and 5 at.%) concentrations. Samples were successfully prepared via sol-gel assisted combustion method. They exhibit photoluminescence properties which are manifested as red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) and two green emissions at 551 and 523 nm (4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and 2H11/2 → 4I15/2). X-ray Powder Diffraction pattern proved that all samples crystallize as a pure orthorhombic phase. Scanning electron microscopy was used for morphology characterization and it revealed the existence of porous agglomerated round-shaped particles. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the presence of dopant ions and even distribution of all constituting elements. To calculate the energy band gap, UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was performed and a value of 4.3 eV was obtained, as well as the four additional values from the bands at lower energies. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue was monitored using UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Obtained results were promising since after 4 h of exposure to the simulating Sun irradiation, more than 50% of the starting dye concentration was mineralized.

AB - In this investigation, samples of strontium-gadolinium-oxide (SrGd2O4) doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4 and 6 at%) and constant Ho3+ (1 at%) contents and co-doped with Bi3+ (2 at%) were prepared using the glycine-assisted sol–gel method. The pure orthorhombic SrGd2O4 phase, space group Pnma, was revealed using X-ray diffraction in all samples. Transmission electron microscopy discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring approximately 150 nm in size. The inclusion of Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology since the formation of larger grains was observed, with sizes reaching up to ∼1.7 μm. The uniform distribution of all constitutive elements was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In all samples, up-conversion emission spectra revealed two dominant green (540 and 550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) emission lines, due to the 5F4,5S2→5I8, 5F5→5I8, and 5F4,5S2 → 5I7 transitions, respectively. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emissions, shorter luminescence decay, and the highest quantum yield. Additionally, a significant decrease in the energy band gap value was detected using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for this sample. Methylene blue was used as a test pollutant to investigate its photocatalytic efficiency under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that Bi3+ co-doping deteriorates the photocatalytic efficiency of the SrGd2O4:Yb3+/Ho3+ phase by reducing hydroxyl radical formation.

AB - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy.

AB - Monodispersed polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)/acrylic acid (AA) microgels with a tuneable negative charge and macroporous internal structure have been produced using a Lego-inspired droplet microfluidic device. The surface charge of microgels was controlled by changing the content of AA in the monomer mixture from zero (for noncharged PEGDA beads) to 4 wt%. The macroporosity of the polymer matrix was introduced by adding 20 wt% of 600-MW polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a porogen material into the monomer mixture. The porogen was successfully leached out with acetone after UV-crosslinking, which resulted in micron-sized cylindrical pores with crater-like morphology, uniformly arranged on the microgel surface. Negatively charged PEGDA/AA beads showed improved adsorption capacity towards positively charged organic dyes (methylene blue and rhodamine B) compared to neutral PEGDA beads and high repulsion of negatively charged dye molecules (methyl orange and congo red). Macroporous microgels showed better adsorption properties than nonporous beads, with a maximum adsorption capacity towards methylene blue of 45 mg/g for macroporous PEGDA/AA microgels at pH 8.6, as compared to 23 mg/g for nonporous PEGDA/AA microgels at the same pH. More than 98% of Cu(II) ions were removed from 50 ppm solution at pH 6.7 using 2.7 mg/mL of macroporous PEGDA/AA microgel. The adsorption of cationic species was significantly improved when pH was increased from 3 to 9 due to a higher degree of ionization of AA monomeric units in the polymer network. The synthesized copolymer beads can be used in drug delivery to achieve improved loading capacity of positively charged therapeutic agents and in tissue engineering, where a negative charge of scaffolds coupled with porous structure can help to achieve improved permeability of high-molecular-weight metabolites and nutrients, and anti-fouling activity against negatively charged species.

AB - Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of plant hormones that play important roles in regulating various physiological and developmental processes in plants. One of the most effective BRs involved in modulating crop growth is 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL). The effects of different concentrations of 24-EBL on various biochemical and biophysical parameters critical to early growth stages and seedling development were investigated using two maize hybrids, ‘ZP 434’ (a new-generation hybrid) and ‘ZP 704’ (an older-generation hybrid). The evaluation of results is based on measurements of germination percentage, morphometric parameters, redox status, comparative analysis of thermodynamic parameters (such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy), and the concentration of specific sugars in different parts of maize seedlings. The results indicate that the germination and initial growth of maize seedlings are influenced by the flow of crucial sugars from the remaining seed (as a source of nutrients) towards the plumule and radicle (as sink organs). Furthermore, alterations in Gibbs free energy play a significant role in these sugar transfers within the maize seedlings. The seed germination was most affected by the highest concentrations of 24-EBL, showing inhibitory effects, whereas lower and moderate concentrations of exogenously added 24-EBL exhibited a beneficial influence on the initial phases of seedling growth. The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.

The seed germination was most affected by the highest concentrations of 24-EBL, showing inhibitory effects, whereas lower and moderate concentrations of exogenously added 24-EBL exhibited a beneficial influence on the initial phases of seedling growth. The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.",

AB - (1) Background: An increasing use of pharmaceutics imposes a need for the permanent development of efficient strategies, including the tailoring of highly specific new materials for their removal from the environment. Photocatalytic degradation has been the subject of increasing interest of the researchers in the field. (2) Methods: This paper is focused on the investigation of the possibility to deposit a thin metal layer on a TiO2 surface and study its photocatalytic performance for the degradation of ciprofloxacin using a combination of theoretical and experimental methods. (3) Results: Based on the extensive DFT screening of 24 d-metals’ adhesion on TiO2, Cu was selected for further work, due to the satisfactory expected stability and good availability. The (Cu)TiO2 was successfully synthesized and characterized with XRD, SEM+EDS and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The uniformly distributed copper on the TiO2 surface corresponds to the binding on high-affinity oxygen-rich sites, as proposed with DFT calculations. The photocatalytic degradation rate of ciprofloxacin was improved by about a factor of 1.5 compared to the bare non-modified TiO2. (4) Conclusions: The observed result was ascribed to the ability of adsorbed Cu to impede the agglomeration of TiO2 and increase the active catalytic area, and bandgap narrowing predicted with DFT calculations.

AB - The main goal of this study was to examine the efficiency of a newly isolated fungus from quince, Aspergillus tubingensis FAT43, to produce the pectinolytic complex using agricultural and industrial waste as the substrate for solid state fermentation. Sugar beet pulp was the most effective substrate inducer of pectinolytic complex synthesis out of all the waste residues examined. For endo-pectinolytic and total pectinolytic activity, respectively, statistical optimization using Placked-Burman Design and Optimal (Custom) Design increased production by 2.22 and 2.15-fold, respectively. Liquification, clarification, and an increase in the amount of reducing sugar in fruit juices (apple, banana, apricot, orange, and quince) processed with pectinolytic complex were identified. Enzymatic pre-treatment considerably increases yield (14%–22%) and clarification (90%). After enzymatic treatment, the best liquefaction was observed in orange juice, whereas the best clarification was obtained in apricot juice. Additionally, the pectinolytic treatment of apricot juice resulted in the highest increase in reducing sugar concentration (11%) compared to all other enzymatically treated juices. Optimizing the production of a highly active pectinolytic complex and its efficient utilization in the processing of fruit juices, including the generation of an increasing amount of waste, are the significant outcomes of this research.

AB - Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA), naturally produced by Bacillus species, is a biodegradable, non-toxic, biocompatible, and non-immunogenic negatively charged polymer. Due to its properties, it has found various applications in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. In this work, Bacillus subtilis 17B was selected as the best PGA producer among fifty wild-types Bacillus strains tested and characterized as a glutamate-independent producer. The production of PGA by the newly identified strain was optimized and increased tenfold using the Box-Behnken experimental design. The purity of PGA after recovery and purification from the fermentation broth was confirmed by SDS-PAGE followed by Methylene Blue staining. PGA was characterized by ESI MS and used for the preparation of a new nanocomposite with TiO2. The synthesis of PGA/TiO2 nanocomposite, its structural analysis, and cytotoxic effect on the cervical cancer cell line (HeLa cell) was investigated to determine the potential anti-cancer usage of this newly prepared material. Encouraging, PGA/TiO2 nanocomposite showed an increased cytotoxic effect compared to TiO2 alone.

AB - Partial cation substitution can significantly change the physical properties of parent compounds. By controlling the chemical composition and knowing the mutual relationship between composition and physical properties, it is possible to tailor the properties of materials to those that are superior for desired technological application. Using the polyol synthesis procedure, a series of yttrium-substituted iron oxide nanoconstructs, γ-Fe2−xYxO3 (YIONs), was prepared. It was found that Y3+ could substitute Fe3+ in the crystal structures of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) up to a limited concentration of ~1.5% (γ-Fe1.969Y0.031O3). Analysis of TEM micrographs showed that crystallites or particles were aggregated in flower-like structures with diameters from 53.7 ± 6.2 nm to 97.3 ± 37.0 nm, depending on yttrium concentration. To be investigated for potential applications as magnetic hyperthermia agents, YIONs were tested twice: their heating efficiency was tested and their toxicity was investigated. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values were in the range of 32.6 W/g to 513 W/g and significantly decreased with increased yttrium concentration in the samples. Intrinsic loss power (ILP) for γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe1.995Y0.005O3 were ~8–9 nH·m2/Kg, which pointed to their excellent heating efficiency. IC50 values of investigated samples against cancer (HeLa) and normal (MRC-5) cells decreased with increased yttrium concentration and were higher than ~300 μg/mL. The samples of γ-Fe2−xYxO3 did not show a genotoxic effect. The results of toxicity studies show that YIONs are suitable for further in vitro/in vivo studies toward to their potential medical applications, while results of heat generation point to their potential use in magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment or use as self-heating systems for other technological applications such as catalysis.

AB - Finding a pollen substitute for honey bees that is nutritionally adequate and affordable is a scientific and practical challenge. We attempted a new rational approach and tried to exploit honey bees’ natural cannibalistic behavior. We tested processed insect larvae as a food source that is nutritionally similar to bee brood, and which can easily be produced on a large scale. In cage experiments, monitoring bee mortality, food consumption and changes in bee body parts’ weights showed that flour obtained by grinding dried yellow mealworm larvae has the potential to become an excellent component for pollen substitution. Bees from the cage group fed Tenebrio molitor patties (TG) demonstrated overall best results in comparison to sugar patties fed bee group (CG), yeast patties fed bee group (YG) and pollen patties fed bee group (PG). They did not lose weight as rapidly as the CG, did not defecate inside cages as the YG, nor show increased mortality as the PG. At the same time, TG consumed less food (mean 13.7 g/cage) than CG (16.8 g/cage), YG (20.4 g/cage) and PG (23.9 g/cage) within the period of 28 days. Bees’ gut increase in weight was lowest in the CG, followed by TG and PG and was the highest in the YG which resulted in diarrhea after 14 days. Bees from TG did not lag behind other bees in head, thorax and abdomen weight after 28 days. We demonstrated that processed yellow mealworm larvae (T. molitor) can be used as an ingredient for honey bee feed.

AB - The combination ofb-oligosaccharides from enzymatically hydrolysed barleyb-glucan has attracted inter-est recently due to its positive effects on human health. This study aimed to assess the impact of theendo-b-1,3-1,4-glucanase enzyme fromBacillus subtilis168 on improving the nutritional and bioactiveproperties of barleyb-glucan. A new procedure for the isolation ofb-glucan was developed, at a lowertemperature (45°C), enabling purity from starch contamination, without affecting the yield (6 gb-glucanfrom 100 g of barley flour). The endo-b-1,3-1,4-glucanase is cloned intoE. colipQE_Ek enables the highproduction and purification (82% yield, 1.8 mg mL 1and 440 U mg 1) of an enzyme identical to thenatural one (25.5 kDa). The enzymatic reaction showed high efficiency ofb-glucan degradation by recom-binant enzyme, giving a mixture of products (of which 3-O-b-cellobiosyl-D-glucose and 3-O-b-cellotriosyl-D-glucose are the most abundant), the reduction of viscosity (17%) and increase in antioxidant capacitiesby 15.2%, 30.9% and 44.0% assessed by ABTS, DPPH and ORAC, respectively. These results indicatethe possible application of endo-b-1,3-1,4-glucanase enzyme in improving the properties of barleyb-glucan used as functional foods.

AB - N-doped TiO2/carbon composites (TiO2/CN) with different nitrogen content, were obtained starting from titanium isopropoxide and glucose, and by varying the amount of melamine, added to starting reaction mixture. For comparison, an undoped sample (TiO2/C) was also prepared. Structural and surface characteristics were determined through scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CN composites was examined via photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and multiclass pharmaceuticals from water solution. It was found that N doping of TiO2/carbon composites induced changes in structural and surface characteristics of TiO2/CN composites, improving their adsorption, but decreasing photocatalytic efficiency. Nevertheless, TiO2/CN0.05 composite obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of glucose and 0.05 g melamine showed the highest efficiency for removing selected pharmaceuticals and methylene blue from aqueous solutions through the combined processes of adsorption in the dark, and photocatalytic degradation under UV and visible irradiation.

AB - Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic pollutant that is widely spread in waterbody with effluents as a result of its extensive use in the plastics industry. It posses to the class of compounds that are endocrine disruptors and has a great negative impact on living organisms. Therefore, the progress in development of green technology for BPA removal from the aquatic media is crucial for environmental protection. This paper presents BPA removal by electrochemical oxidation on SnO2-MWCNT (tin dioxide-multi walled carbon nanotube) nanocomposite anode. The nanocomposite was structural and morphological characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical properties of the SnO2-MWCNT anode were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and electrical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of anodes toward BPA in sodium sulfate solutions has shown that BPA is oxidized by indirectly mechanism via hydroxyl radicals (verified by quenching tests). Electrolysis of BPA has been done in galvanostatic regime at current densities 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 mA cm−2 in 0.1 M sodium sulfate supported electrolyte pH 4.0. Complete degradation of BPA was accomplished after 5 h of electrolysis at a current density of 20 mA cm−2. The proposed electrochemical technology using a low-cost SnO2-MWCNT electrode is promising for wastewater BPA removal.

AB - The combination of an intense absorption of visible light and p-type semiconducting nature makes spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) a very attractive material for various optoelectronic applications. However, the traditional methods for its synthesis have been either time- and energy-consuming or relying on toxic chemicals. To solve this issue, a simple, facile, and eco-friendly method of synthesis was successfully developed to obtain spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles. The novel method for obtaining pure and monophasic Co3O4 reported here is based on the thermal decomposition of hexaaquacobalt(II) D-camphor10-sulfonate at 900 °C. This fast solid-state synthesis route overcomes the disadvantages of many combustion methods, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. The synthesized material was subjected to a detailed characterization to assess its potential for use as a nanocatalyst. The band gap measurements indicated the presence of two band gaps, one at 2.10 eV and another at 1.22 eV, confirming the purity and semiconducting properties of the sample. The electrochemical studies demonstrated a significant enhancement in the electron transfer kinetics with the addition of the synthesized Co3O4 to the carbon-paste electrode, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. These prominent functional properties, suitable for a wide range of technological applications, pave way for the implementation of the reported method for the synthesis of Co3O4 on a larger industrial scale.

abstract = "The combination of an intense absorption of visible light and p-type semiconducting nature makes spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) a very attractive material for various optoelectronic applications. AB - Infertility is a major global health issue, affecting approximately 9% of couples worldwide. Its prevalence increased steadily over the preceding decades, paralleling environmental and lifestyle changes. One assisted reproductive technique to overcome infertility is in vitro fertilization (IVF). The IVF procedure consists of several stages, one of which is controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) via various protocols allowing follicular recruitment and maturation in preparation for oocyte retrieval. Follicular fluid (FF) is the microenvironment in which oocytes develop during folliculogenesis, and FF information could be used to assess follicle and oocyte development and maturation stages. Nitric oxide (NO) is a component of FF that is being studied as a predictive factor of follicle maturation and egg quality and as a potential indicator of the success of COS during the IVF process. The hypothesis was that COS affects NO levels in the serum; more specifically, that NO levels in serum after COS correlate with NO levels in FF, based on literature data on the influence of female reproductive hormones on NO metabolism and data on the change in the hormonal milieu affected by COS use. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that NO levels in serum and FF after COS were related to the number of high-quality female reproductive cells obtained during IVF. Assuming that NO levels in serum after COS correlate with NO levels in FF, the central hypothesis of this study is that serum NO levels after COS could be a valuable predictor of oocyte quality and the number of high-quality female reproductive cells achieved by COS. As a result of the hypothesis, measuring NO could be a novel way to improve the efficiency of IVF treatment.

AB - Gallic acid (GA) is one of the most important and present natural phenolic compounds due to its well-known biological properties, and its detection and monitoring is of great importance. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most studied metallic nanomaterials used in various fields, from biomedical applications to electrochemical sensing devices. In this work, we used the pulsed laser ablation technique in liquid for the one-step preparation of nanoparticles of silver from a pure silver plate base in N,N-dimethylformamide. Obtained nanomaterial was characterized using morphological and electrochemical methods and used for modification of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). Successful immobilization at the surface is confirmed using the surface profiling method. A newly obtained sensor was used for the detection of GA. After parameters optimization, a differential pulse voltammetric protocol was developed, using two approaches - concentration vs. current (GA determination) and peak area vs. current (estimation of the antioxidant capacity). For the first approach sensor linearity was found to be in the range from 0.50 µM to 10 µM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 µM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.50 µM. In the second system operating linear range was the same, while LOD and LOQ were 0.11 µM and 0.34 µM, respectively. Practical application of the method was tested using two approaches: direct measurement of gallic acid in biological fluids and estimation of the antioxidant capacity and food quality purpose.

AB - Structural modification of different carbon-based nanomaterials is often necessary to
improve their morphology and optical properties, particularly the incorporation of N-atoms in
graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Here, a clean, simple, one-step, and eco-friendly method for
N-doping of GQDs using gamma irradiation is reported. GQDs were irradiated in the presence
of the different ethylenediamine (EDA) amounts (1 g, 5 g, and 10 g) and the highest % of N was
detected in the presence of 10 g. N-doped GQDs emitted strong, blue photoluminescence (PL).
Photoluminescence quantum yield was increased from 1.45, as obtained for non-irradiated dots,
to 7.24% for those irradiated in the presence of 1 g of EDA. Modified GQDs were investigated as
a PL probe for the detection of insecticide Carbofuran (2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-7-
yl methylcarbamate) and herbicide Amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole). The limit of detection was
5.4 µmol L−1
for Carbofuran. For the first time, Amitrole was detected by GQDs in a turn-off/turn-on
mechanism using Pd(II) ions as a quenching agent. First, Pd(II) ions were quenched (turn-off) PL
of GQDs, while after Amitrole addition, PL was recovered linearly with Amitrole concentration
(turn-on). LOD was 2.03 µmol L−1
. These results suggest that modified GQDs can be used as an
efficient new material for Carbofuran and Amitrole detection. Furthermore, the phototoxicity of dots
was investigated on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. When bacterial cells
were exposed to different GQD concentrations and illuminated with light of 470 nm wavelength, the
toxic effects were not observed.

AB - Large amounts of hazardous and toxic substances in the environment require non-toxic, cheap, easy, rapid, and
sensitive methods for their detection. Blue luminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were produced by
electrochemical cleavage of graphite electrodes followed by gamma irradiation in the presence of ethylenedi amine (EDA). Modified dots were able to detect metal ions (Co2+, Pd2+, Fe3+) due to photoluminescence
quenching. The highest sensitivity was detected for the sample irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy. The limits of
detection (LODs) were 1.79, 2.55, and 0.66 μmol L− 1 for Co2+, Fe3+, and Pd2+, respectively. It was observed that
GQDs irradiated at 200 kGy act as an ultra-sensitive turn-on probe for Malathion detection with LOD of 94 nmol
L− 1
. Atomic force microscopy images proved the aggregation of GQDs in the presence of the investigated metal
ions. Results obtained by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and LIVE/
DEAD cytotoxicity test indicated that GQDs irradiated with EDA are not toxic towards MRC-5 cells, which makes
them a promising, eco-friendly and safe material for sensing application.

AB - A dysregulated and overwhelming response to an infection accompanied by the exaggerated pro-inflammatory state and metabolism disturbance leads to the fatal outcome in sepsis. Previously we showed that meldonium, an anti-ischemic drug clinically used to treat myocardial and cerebral ischemia, strongly increases mortality in faecal-induced peritonitis (FIP) in rats. We postulated that the same mechanism that is responsible for the otherwise strong anti-inflammatory effects of meldonium could be the culprit of the increased mortality. In the present study, we applied the LPS-induced model of sepsis to explore the presence of any differences from and/or similarities to the FIP model. When it comes to energy production, despite some shared similarities, it is evident that LPS and FIP models of sepsis differ greatly. A different profile of sympathoadrenal activation may account for this observation, as it was lacking in the FIP model, whereas in the LPS model it was strong enough to overcome the effects of meldonium. Therefore, choosing the appropriate model of sepsis induction is of great importance, especially if energy homeostasis is the main focus of the study. Even when differences in the experimental design of the two models are acknowledged, the role of different patterns of energy production cannot be excluded. On that account, our results draw attention to the importance of uninterrupted energy production in sepsis but also call for much-needed revisions of the current recommendations for its treatment. © 2022 by the authors.
