AB - This study describes photolysis of 1 × 10–4 M methomyl solution in deionized water and in eleven organic solvents, both polar and nonpolar: methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, sec-butanol, tert-butanol, isobutanol, isopentanol, n-hexane, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. Photolysis of methomyl at 254 nm was performed using Osram mercury lamp (6 × 8 W) by exposing to irradiation for five hours. All photolytic methomyl reactions were studied by UV/Vis spectroscopy within a wavelength range of 190−300 nm (Spectrum Mode), and at 233.4 nm (Quantitative Mode), while the rate of photodecomposition of methomyl was measured using UV spectroscopy and HPLC. In order to get better insight in the photolysis of methomyl, a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MSn) was used. The rate of methomyl photolysis was solvent-specific and the following reaction rate order was established: deionized water > tert-butanol > n-hexane > sec-butanol > ethanol > isopentanol > isobutanol > isopropanol > methanol > acetonitrile > dichloromethane > n-propanol. Both nonspecific and specific solvent-solute interactions contribute mutually to the differences in the obtained quantum yields. Results of quantum chemical calculations, using CBS-QB3 method, provided insights into the solvent effects on both ground and excited state. The LC/MSn analysis showed the formation of several photolytic products.

AB - The objective of this study was to determine and compare the sugar profile, distribution in fruits and leaves and sink-source relationship in three strawberry (‘Favette’, ‘Alba’ and ‘Clery’) and three blueberry cultivars (‘Bluecrop’, ‘Duke’ and ‘Nui’) grown in organic (OP) and integrated production systems (IP). Sugar analysis was done using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD). The results showed that monosaccharide glucose and fructose and disaccharide sucrose were the most important sugars in strawberry, while monosaccharide glucose, fructose, and galactose were the most important in blueberry. Source-sink relationship was different in strawberry compared to blueberry, having a much higher quantity of sugars in its fruits in relation to leaves. According to principal component analysis (PCA), galactose, arabinose, and melibiose were the most important sugars in separating the fruits of strawberries from blueberries, while panose, ribose, stachyose, galactose, maltose, rhamnose, and raffinose were the most important sugar component in leaves recognition. Galactitol, melibiose, and gentiobiose were the key sugars that split out strawberry fruits and leaves, while galactose, maltotriose, raffinose, fructose, and glucose divided blueberry fruits and leaves in two groups. PCA was difficult to distinguish between OP and IP, because the stress-specific responses of the studied plants were highly variable due to the different sensitivity levels and defense strategies of each cultivar, which directly affected the sugar distribution. Due to its high content of sugars, especially fructose, the strawberry cultivar ‘Clery’ and the blueberry cultivars ‘Bluecrop’ and ‘Nui’ could be singled out in this study as being the most suitable cultivars for OP.

AB - Chemical characterizations of leaves and fruits that were obtained from organically and integrally produced strawberries ('Favette', 'Alba', and 'Clery') and blueberries ('Bluecrop', 'Duke', and 'Nui') from western Serbia were undertaken in this study. Phenolic analysis was done while using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a linear ion trap-Orbitrap hybrid mass analyzer, while total phenolic content (TPC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), and radical-scavenging activity (RSA) by spectrophotometry. In general, leaves and fruits from blueberry showed higher levels of TPC and TAC as compared to strawberry. These chemical traits were larger in organic grown fruits and larger in leaves than fruits. The most abundant phenolics in leaves and fruits of blueberry was 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, followed by quercetin 3-O-galactoside, while catechin, quercetin, and kaempferol 3-O-glucosid were dominant in the leaves and fruits of strawberry. cis, trans-Abscisic acid was detected in all fruit samples, but not in leaves. Blueberries (both fruits and leaves) were separated from strawberries, but only organic blueberry fruits were distinguished from integrated fruits, according to principal component analysis. Quercetin, kaempferol, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, p-coumaric acid, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were the most influential phenolic compounds for the separation. Much higher contents of TPC, RSA, TAC, quercetin 3-O-galactoside, and quercetin were found in fruits and TPC, RSA, catechin, p-hydroxybenzoicacid, p-coumaricacid, and ferulic acid in leaves in all three blueberry cultivars and the strawberry cultivar 'Clery'. These phenolic compounds are good sources of antioxidant compounds with potentially high beneficial effects on human health.

AB - Photocatalytic degradation of a model compound of the carbamate insecticide
carbofuran in water was studied using polychromatic light and ZnO and TiO2 catalysts.
The influence of operational parameters, such as reaction time and initial carbofuran
concentration, on photocatalytic degradation was studied. A pseudo-first-order kinetic
model was established and an almost complete removal of 88.4 mg L–1 of carbofuran
occurred within 2 h under optimized conditions. The reactions were examined by UV
spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In addition,
the photocatalytic efficiencies of ZnO and TiO2 were compared under the same
reaction conditions.

AB - The aim of this work was to determine phenolic profile and antioxidant properties of methanolic (MEP) and ethanolic (EEP) extracts of monofloral bee-collected sunflower pollen from Serbia. In total, 37 different polyphenols (19 flavonol glycosides and 18 other polyphenols) were identified by UHPLC/MS-MS Orbitrap analysis. The different phenolic profile of MEP and EEP was observed with flavonols as most abundant, 94.1% (MEP) and 93.4% (EEP), out of which flavonoid glycosides represented 73.2% (MEP) and 66.1% (EEP). The higher amount of total phenolics was recorded in EEP (200.58 mg/kg DW) than in MEP (244.44 mg/kg DW). The quercetin 3-O-galactoside was the major compound in both extracts, 112.86 mg/kg in MEP and 128.64 mg/kg in EEP. The presence of coumaroylated and acetylated flavonoid glycosides were registered, among which the quercetin 3-O-(6“-acetyl)hexoside was recored in the significant amount in MEP (111.10 mg Q3G/kg DW), whereas in EEP the content of coumaroylated kaempferol glycosides (137.95 mg Q3G/kg DW) was significantly higher. The ferric reducing power and ABTS radical scavenging activity assays revealed that pollen extracts possessed significant antioxidant activity. The monofloral bee-collected pollen of Helianthus annuus L. can be used as good food supplement with high flavonoids content and antioxidant activity.

AB - To contribute to the development of urban beekeeping, we designed this study to obtain more information about the contamination of urban bee products with toxic metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and pesticides. The samples of honey (N=23), pollen (N=13), and floral nectar (N=6) were collected from the experimental stationary apiary of the Belgrade University Faculty of Agriculture located in centre of Zemun (a municipality of the Belgrade metropolitan area) in 2015 and 2016. Metals (Pb, Cd, As, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr, and Hg) were determined with inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed with high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). Pesticides were analysed with gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The honey samples were generally within the European and Serbian regulatory limits. The levels of all the 123 analysed pesticides were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Regarding PAH levels in honey, the highest content was found for naphthalene. The elevated levels of Hg and Cr and of PAHs in the pollen samples indicated air pollution. Pesticide residues in pollen, however, were below the LOQ. In nectar, metal levels were relatively similar to those in honey. Our results suggest that the investigated urban honey meets the regulatory requirements for metals, PAHs, and pesticides and is therefore safe for consumption.

AB - Cold stress adversely affects growth and productivity, and triggers a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes in plants. Since sugars are present in all floral nectars in greater amounts than any other constituent, the aim of this study was to examine how frost exposure changes sugar metabolism and how it affects on the content of sugar components in the nectar of quince. Three quince cultivars ('Vranjska', 'Triumph' and 'Leskovac. ka') were investigated in this study. The contents of sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, trehalose, maltose, isomaltose, rhamnose, arabinose, ribose, melezitose, raffinose, and panose) and sugar alcohols (sorbitol, erythritol, mannitol and galactitol) were analyzed by high performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC) with amperometric detection. The results showed that after late spring frosts and irreversible damage of flower parts, the nectar of the three quince cultivars contained elevated levels of fructose, trehalose, arabinose, ribose, rhamnose, raffinose, galactitol and mannitol, indicating an impairment of central carbohydrate metabolism. The ratios between individual sugars, such as the glucose/fructose ratio, were changed in the nectar of damaged flowers in all three quince cultivars. The examined cultivars showed similar sugar response to cold stress. The only exception was 'Leskovac. ka' for the glucose and melezitose pathway, which means that composition of those two sugars changed significantly according to the genotype. The larger are the carbohydrates reserves in different parts of a fruit tree, the higher is the tolerance to any form of frost damage, the results of this study could help in the understanding of how different quince cultivars react to this kind of stress and how they modulate their sugar metabolism.
