Does Lead Have a Connection to Autism? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

One of these metals that stands out, in particular, is lead (Pb). We conducted an in-depth systematic review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies on Pb levels in biological materials retrieved from autistic children (cases) and neurotypical children (controls) in this work. A systematic review was conducted after the careful selection of published studies according to established criteria to gain a broad insight into the higher or lower levels of Pb in the biological materials of cases and controls, and the findings were then strengthened by a meta-analysis. The meta-analysis included 17 studies (hair), 13 studies (whole blood), and 8 studies (urine). The overall number of controls/cases was 869/915 (hair), 670/755 (whole blood), and 344/373 (urine). This meta-analysis showed significantly higher Pb levels in all three types of biological material in cases than in controls, suggesting a higher body Pb burden in autistic children. Thus, environmental Pb exposure could be related to the genesis of autism. Since no level of Pb can be considered safe, the data from this study undoubtedly point to the importance of regularly monitoring Pb levels in autistic children.

AB  - The aim of this study was to find the chemical parameters for the differentiation of plum
cultivars grown along the fjord areas of Western Norway and Eastern Norway, having specific
agroclimatic conditions. Chemical analysis of the fruits confirmed the contents of 13 quantified
elements, 22 sugar compounds, 11 organic acids, 19 phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity in
68 plum cultivars. Dominated contents were noted for nitrogen (with the maximum mean value of
3.11%), potassium (8055.80 mg/kg), and phosphorous (7878.88 mg/kg). Averagely, the highest level
of sugars was determined for glucose (244.46 g/kg), fructose (197.92 g/kg), sucrose (208.25 g/kg),
and sorbitol (98.02 g/kg), organic acids for malic acid (24.06 g/kg), and for polyphenol compounds
were 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (66.31 mg/kg), and rutin (58.06 mg/kg). Applied principal component
analysis has been useful for distinguishing the plum cultivars from three areas in Norway where
copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and sodium; sucrose, ribose, maltose, and raffinose;
p-hydroxybenzoic acid, rutin, ferulic acid, kaempferol 7-O-glucoside, p-coumaric acid, and 5-Ocaffeoylquinic acid were the most influential. In regard to human health and future breeding work
that will have the aim to produce functional food with high health-related compounds, the plum
cultivar ‘Mallard’ should be underlined due to the high level of elements, ‘Valor’ due to high sugar
content, ‘Helgøyplomme’ due to content of organic acids, and ‘Diamond’ due to the content of
phenolic compounds.

AB  - The synthesis of 17 hybrid molecules, consisting of artesunate, a derivative of naturally occurring artemisinin, and synthetic 4-aryl-2-aminopyrimidines, is described. New compounds were designed to improve the parent compounds' cytotoxic properties, activity, and selectivity. The synthesized hybrid molecules (15a–f with ethylenediamine linker and 16a–k with piperazine linker), as well as their precursors – pyrimidine derivatives (13a–f and 14a–k), artemisinin, and artesunate, were tested on sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) human non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cells. All hybrid compounds with piperazine linker 16a–k were selective toward NSCLC cells and displayed IC50 values below 5 μM. Although they showed similar anticancer potency as artesunate, their selectivity against cancer cells was considerably improved. Importantly, 16h–k hybrid compounds were able to evade MDR phenotype, inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp) activity, and increase the sensitivity of MDR NSCLC cells to doxorubicin (DOX). The inhibition of P-gp activity induced by 16h–j was stronger than the one obtained with artesunate. Among these four hybrid compounds, 16k was the most potent anticancer agent with similar IC50 values of around 1.5 μM (for comparison – over 3.1 μM for artesunate) in sensitive and MDR NSCLC cells.

AB  - The synthesis of 24 hybrid molecules, consisting of naturally occurring sclareol (SCL) and synthetic 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines (TPs), is described. New compounds were designed with the aim of improving the cytotoxic properties, activity, and selectivity of the parent compounds. Six analogs (12a-f) contained 4-benzylpiperazine linkage, while 4-benzyldiamine linkage was present in eighteen derivatives (12g-r and 13a-f). Hybrids 13a-f consist of two TP units. After purification, all hybrids (12a-r and 13a-f), as well as their precursors (9a-e and 11a-c), were tested on human glioblastoma U87 cells. More than half of the tested synthesized molecules, 16 out of 31, caused a significant reduction of U87 cell viability (more than 75% reduction) at 30 µM. The concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of these 16 compounds was also examined on U87 cells, corresponding multidrug-resistant (MDR) U87-TxR cells with increased P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression and activity, and normal lung fibroblasts MRC-5. Importantly, 12l and 12r were active in the nanomolar range, while seven compounds (11b, 11c, 12i, 12l, 12n, 12q, and 12r) were more selective towards glioblastoma cells than SCL. All compounds except 12r evaded MDR, showing even better cytotoxicity in U87-TxR cells. In particular, 11c, 12a, 12g, 12j, 12k, 12m, 12n, and SCL showed collateral sensitivity. Hybrid compounds 12l, 12q, and 12r decreased P-gp activity to the same extent as a well-known P-gp inhibitor - tariquidar (TQ). Hybrid compound 12l and its precursor 11c affected different cellular processes including the cell cycle, cell death, and mitochondrial membrane potential, and changed the levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) in glioblastoma cells. Collateral sensitivity towards MDR glioblastoma cells was caused by the modulation of oxidative stress accompanied by inhibition of mitochondria.

AB  - Long-term exposure of populations to pollution may result in enhanced ability to cope with environmental stress. To compare the responses of two Lymantria dispar populations living in unpolluted and polluted forests (UP and PP, respectively), we chronically exposed larvae to cadmium at concentrations of 50 and 100 μg Cd/g dry food (Cd1 and Cd2, respectively). We examined cadmium accumulation in the midgut and hemolymph, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and alkaline phosphatases (ALP) in the midgut, as well as Hsp70 protein expression in the midgut, hemolymph, and brain and evaluated these parameters as biomarkers of cadmium contamination. Larvae from PP, fed a control diet, showed higher activity of SOD and increased Hsp70 expression compared with larvae from UP. Excessive amounts of Cd were accumulated in the midgut of all Cd-fed larvae, whereas Cd content in the hemolymph was elevated only in larvae from PP after Cd2 treatment. In larvae from UP, Cd2 treatment decreased the activity of CAT and induced the expression of Hsp70 in the midgut and hemolymph. In larvae from PP, exposure to both Cd concentrations strongly attenuated SOD and CAT activities, while Hsp70 expression was not induced in any organ/tissue. Cd did not affect ALP activity in either population. Midgut Cd content proved to be a suitable indicator of Cd contamination for both polluted and unpolluted habitats.

AB  - Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic metal that is distributed worldwide. Exposure to it is
correlated with a vast number of diseases and organism malfunctions. Exopolysaccharides (EPS)
derived from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BGAN8, EPS-AN8, previously showed great potential for
the in vitro protection of intestinal cells from this metal. Here, we investigated the potential of food
supplemented with EPS-AN8 to protect rats from the hazardous effects of Cd exposure. After thirty
days of exposure to lower (5 ppm) and higher (50 ppm)-Cd doses, the administration of EPS-AN8 led to decreased Cd content in the kidneys, liver, and blood compared to only Cd-treated groups, whereas the fecal Cd content was strongly enriched. In addition, EPS-AN8 reversed Cd-provoked effects on the most significant parameters of oxidative stress (MDA, CAT, GST, and GSH) and inflammation (IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ) in the duodenum. Moreover, micrographs of the duodenum were in line with these findings. As the gut microbiota has an important role in maintaining homeostasis, we used 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and investigated the effects of Cd and EPS-AN8 on one part of the microbiota presented in the duodenum. Although Cd decreased the growth of lactobacilli and mostly favored the blooming of opportunistic pathogen bacteria, parallel intake of EPS-AN8 reversed those changes. Therefore, our results imply that EPS-AN8 might be extremely noteworthy in combatting this toxic environmental pollutant.

AB  - The mobility of chemical elements in the soil-orchid system has been poorly studied. The aim of this study is to evaluate the uptake and mobility of several trace (Li, Ba, Sr, Ag, Hg, and B) and macronutrients (Ca, Mg, and K) in the orchid Anacamptis morio (L.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase from soils in western Serbia. The sampling sites are characterized by three different bedrock types—cherts, limestones, and serpentines, which are the source of the significant chemical differences in the elemental status of the soil and plant tissues. The four-step Community Bureau of Reference sequential extraction procedure was used to determine the distribution of fractions and predict their potential phytoavailability. The orchid and soil samples were analyzed for total elemental content analysis using ICP-OES. The greatest potential for plant availability was determined for Ba and Sr, representing about 80% of the total soil content. More than 40% of Li in the soils was found to be potentially phytoavailable. Significant correlations were found between the total content of Li, B, and Sr in soils. Between 38 and 60% of Li content and more than 80% of Ba and Sr content were determined to be potentially phytoavailable by sequential analysis. The highest bioconcentration factor (> 1) was determined in the case of B and Sr for all orchid organs, while translocation factor for Li was highest in tubers and leaves. The studied elements were mainly stored in tubers and roots, indicating the exclusion strategy of A. morio as a metal tolerance mechanism. The data obtained showed significant differences in metal content in soils and plants originating from sites with different parent materials, suggesting that bedrock type and associated soil properties are important factors that determine chemical element mobility and uptake.

AB  - The present study provides, for the first time, a physicochemical and biochemical characterization of the redox processes associated with the ripening of Solanum dulcamara L. (bittersweet) berries. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPRS) and Imaging (EPRI) measurements of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were performed in parallel with the tissue-specific metabolic profiling of major antioxidants and assessment of antioxidant enzymes activity. Fruit transition from the mature green (MG) to ripe red (RR) stage involved changes in the qualitative and quantitative content of antioxidants and the associated cellular oxidation and peroxidation processes. The skin of bittersweet berries, which was the major source of antioxidants, exhibited the highest antioxidant potential against DPPH radicals and nitroxyl spin probe 3CP. The efficient enzymatic antioxidant system played a critical protective role against the deleterious effects of progressive oxidative stress during ripening. Here, we present the EPRI methodology to assess the redox status of fruits and to discriminate between the redox states of different tissues. Interestingly, the intracellular reoxidation of cell-permeable nitroxide probe 3CP was observed for the first time in fruits or any other plant tissue, and its intensity is herein proposed as a reliable indicator of oxidative stress during ripening. The described noninvasive EPRI technique has the potential to have broader application in the study of redox processes associated with the development, senescence, and postharvest storage of fruits, as well as other circumstances in which oxidative stress is implicated.

AB  - In the present study, we investigated in vitro the antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretion of the guanophilic ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean, 1828) and some of its chemicals against resistant and non-resistant bacteria and Candida species, the synergistic and additive potential of combinations of selected chemicals and antimicrobial drugs against resistant bacterial and fungal strains, anti-adhesive and anti-invasive potential of the secretion and formic acid alone and in selected combinations with antimicrobial drugs against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) toward spontaneously immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT cells). In addition, we examined the antiproliferative activity of the secretion and formic acid in vitro. The tested secretion and the standards of formic and oleic acids possessed a significant level of antimicrobial potential against all tested strains (P < 0.05). The isolate from guano Pseudomonas monteilii showed the highest resistance to the secretion and formic acid, while MRSA achieved a significantly high level of susceptibility to all agents tested, particularly to the combinations of formic acid and antibiotics, but at the same time showed a certain level of resistance to the antibiotics tested individually. Candida albicans and C. tropicalis were found to be the most sensitive fungal strains to the secretion. Formic acid (MIC 0.0005 mg/mL) and gentamicin (MIC 0.0010 mg/mL) in the mixture achieved synergistic antibacterial activity against MRSA (FICI = 0.5, P < 0.05). The combination of formic acid, gentamicin and ampicillin accomplished an additive effect against this resistant bacterial strain (FICI = 1.5, P < 0.05). The secretion achieved a better inhibitory effect on the adhesion ability of MRSA toward HaCaT cells compared to formic acid alone, while formic acid showed better results regarding the invasion (P < 0.001). The combinations of gentamicin and ampicillin, as well as of formic acid and gentamicin and ampicillin achieved similar anti-adhesive and anti-invasive effects, with a slight advantage of formic acid and antibiotics in combination (P < 0.001). The secretion and formic acid were found to be non-toxic to HaCaT cells in vitro (IC50 ≥ 401 μg/mL).

Chemical Characterization, Antioxidant Activity, and Cytotoxity of Wild-Growing and In Vitro Cultivated Rindera umbellata (Waldst. and Kit.) Bunge

AB  - The aim of this study was to comparatively analyze chemical composition and biological activity of wild- and in vitro grown Rindera umbellata. Explants were cultivated on 0.003–0.3 M sucrose, fructose, or glucose. HPLC-DAD for quantifying rosmarinic (RA) and lithospermic B (LAB) acids and GC-MS/FID for qualitative pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) detection were used. Antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS assays) and cytotoxicity (MTT test) were monitored. Identified PAs were 7-angeloyl heliotridane, lindelofine, 7-angeloyl heliotridine, 7-angeloyl-9-(+)-trachelanthylheliotridine, punctanecine, and heliosupine, with higher variability reported in wild-growing samples. Total phenolic contents (TPCs) were comparable in wild-growing and in vitro samples, but total flavonoid (TFC) and RA levels were multifold higher in in vitro samples. Notably, high concentration of LAB was detected in wild-growing roots. Amounts of 0.3 M and 0.1 M of sucrose were optimal for TFC and RA production, while maximal antioxidant activity was monitored in plants grown on 0.3 M sucrose. The MTT test indicated colorectal HT-29 as more sensitive than A549 lung adenocarcinoma and normal MRC-5 cells, showing selective sensitivity to wild-growing and 0.3 M sucrose samples. In conclusion, PAs in vitro, as well as TPC, TFC, RA, and LAB in both growing conditions were detected for the first time in R. umbellata.

AB  - The luminal A-subtype of breast cancer, where the oestrogen receptor α (ERα) is overexpressed, is the most frequent one. The prodrug tamoxifen (1) is the clinically used agent, inhibiting the ERα activity via the formation of several active metabolites, such as 4-hydroxytamoxifen (2) or 4,4′-dihydroxytamoxifen (3). In this study, we present the tamoxifen derivative 4-[1,1-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)but-1-en-2-yl]-2,2′-bipyridine (4), which was combined with platinum or palladium dichloride, the former a well-known scaffold in anticancer treatment, to give [PtCl2(4-κ2N,N′)] (5) or [PdCl2(4-κ2N,N′] (6). To prevent fast exchange of weakly coordinating chlorido ligands in aqueous solution, a bulky, highly stable and hydrophobic nido-carborate(−2) ([C2B9H11]2−) was incorporated. The resulting complexes [3-(4-κ2N,N′)-3,1,2-PtC2B9H11] (7) and [3-(4-κ2N,N′)-3,1,2-PdC2B9H11] (8) exhibit a dramatic change in electronic and biological properties compared to 5 and 6. Thus, 8 is highly selective for triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cells (IC50 = 3.7 μM, MTT test), while 7 is completely inactive against this cell line. The observed cytotoxicity of compounds 4–6 and 8 against this triple-negative cell line suggests off-target mechanisms rather than only ERα inhibition, for which these compounds were originally designed. Spectroscopic properties and electronic structures of the metal complexes were investigated for possible explanations of the biological activities.

As many external factors affect the composition of these fruits (the type of cultivation, soil characteristics, ripeness, storage time and post-harvest technologies, cultivar/genotype, and climatic conditions), the goal of this study was to analyze different raspberry cultivars grown in Norway. Considering that Norway is a country with specific climatic conditions, as well as has a limited period of fruit vegetation, another important goal of this study was also to compare raspberries from different Norwegian areas, as well as different grown cultivars. Modern analytical techniques, such as high-performance anion-exchange liquid chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPEAC-PAD), ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS), and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), provided a detailed examination of the raspberry extract samples. Based on their high levels of minerals (especially N, P, and K), organic acids (predominantly citric and malic acids), sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and galactose), and polyphenols (ellagic acid, syringic acid, quercetin, and rutin), Norwegian raspberries could be considered fruits with increased health-beneficial compounds. AB  - Usingmodern analytical techniques, a comprehensive study of the chemical composition
of fruits from apple cultivars grown in Western Norway during 2019 and 2020 was
done. Metals, sugars, organic acids, antioxidant tests, and polyphenol content have
been observed. In all investigated samples, the most dominant sugars were glucose,
fructose, and sucrose. Among 11 tested organic acids, the dominant was malic
acid, followed by citric and maleic acid. The most common metal was potassium,
followed by magnesium and zinc. The quantification of polyphenols showed that among
the 11 quantified polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, quercetin
3-O-glucoside, quercetin, and phlorizin were the most abundant. A detailed study
of the polyphenolic profile of nine investigated apple samples provided 30 identified
polyphenolic compounds from the class of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids,
flavonoids, and dihydrochalcones. In addition to the identified 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid,
its two isomers of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and three esters were also found. Present
polyphenols of the tested apples provided significant data on the quality of Norwegian
apples, and they contribute to the distinguishing of these apple samples.

AB  - The variety Prokupac is the dominant variety in the vineyards of Southern Serbia, which
produces quality wines of characteristic and unique tastes. In the agroecological conditions of the
Prokuplje vine district, the influence of manual defoliation on the phenolic profile of the wine
produced from the variety Prokupac was examined. Four experimental treatments with different
timings of manual defoliation were applied: early defoliation—treatment I, early defoliation—
treatment II, late defoliation—treatment III and the control. The phenolic profile of the wine
was determined for the three treatments of defoliation and the control treatment. Additionally,
a multivariate analysis was applied on the obtained results, together with already published data
(grape seeds and skins phenolic profiles). Identification and quantification of the phenolic compounds was performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) with an ultraviolet multi-diode detector (DAD) and mass detector with three analyzers—triple quadrupole (QQQ). Based on the obtained results, it was determined that there are significant differences between the experimental treatments in the content of individual polyphenols, total polyphenols and the antioxidant capacity. Twenty (20) phenolic compounds were identified in the wine samples of the experimental treatments. Defoliation significantly affected the variations of the contents of
phenolic acids and flavonoids. In treatment III, the highest content of gallic acid was obtained,
while the treatments with early defoliation did not differ in relation to the control sample. Early
defoliation in treatments I and II had an effect on the phenolic composition of the wine by favoring
the accumulation of flavonol, while the content of hydroxycinnamic acid and total anthocyanins
(TAC) was higher in treatment III. The TAC increases with later defoliation. The wines obtained by
the defoliation treatments did not show higher antioxidant activity compared to the control sample. A principal component analysis resulted in clustering of the samples based on the phenolic components characteristic for each group of samples.

In total, 67 chemical compounds were identi-fied: 48 compounds were extracted from males maintainedon banana and carrot, and 47 compounds from malesmaintained on cornmeal and tomato substrates, while totalof 60 compounds were identified in females from allstrains. The strains and the sexes significantly differed inqualitative nature of their chemoprofiles after mating. Sig-nificant differences in the relative amount of three majormale  pheromones  (cis‐vaccenyl  acetate—cVA,  (Z)‐7‐pentacosene, and (Z)‐7‐tricosene) and in female pheromone(Z,Z)‐7,11‐nonacosadiene among strains were also re-corded. Furthermore, multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) pointed to significant differences between irgin and mated individuals of all strains and within bothsexes. Differences in some of the well known sex pher-omones were also identified when comparing their relativeamount before and after mating. The presence of typicalmale pheromones in females, and vice versa may indicatetheir bidirectional transfer during copulation. Our resultsconfirm significant effect of mating status on cuticular hy-drocarbon (CHC) phenotypes in differently fedD. melano-gasterflies.

AB  - Cistus creticus subsp. creticus is a shrubby Mediterranean plant used since ancient times in folk medicine for the treatment of different diseases. C. creticus extracts and resin contain different types of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids (predominantly labdane type diterpenoids), and phenylpropanoids. Growth conditions seem to influence the content of labdane-type diterpenes and flavan-3-ols in leaves of C. creticus subsp. creticus. Histochemical staining of leaves’ trichomes and comprehensive phytochemical characterization of resin, leaves and their exudates, indicated that long-stalked capitate trichomes of C. creticus subsp. creticus, grown both in vitro (IV) and in greenhouse (GH), are capable of producing bioactive oleoresin-related terpenoids and phenylpropanoids compounds. Bioactivity-guided approach was implemented in search for the major antibacterial compound in C. creticus resin against two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Micrococcus flavus). Bioautographic assay on TLC plates with separated components of Cistus resin extract, revealed a pronounced zone of microbial growth inhibition, corresponded to a highly active compound with Rf values of 0.45, structurally characterized and identified as ent-3β-acetoxy-13-epi-manoyl oxide. This finding opens the route for focusing on isolation and functional characterization of genes involved in the biosynthesis of ent-3β-acetoxy-13-epi-manoyl oxide and its precursor ent-3β-hydroxy-13-epi-manoyl oxide, with the aim to establish sustainable in vitro biotechnological protocols for its large-scale production in homologous and heterologous plant and microbial hosts.

AB  - In the world of complex smells in natural environment, feeding and mating represent two important olfactory-guided behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Diet affects the chemoprofile composition of the individuals, which, indirectly, may significantly affect their mating success. In this study, chemoprofiles of recently mated flies belonging to four D. melanogaster strains, which were fed for many generations on different substrates (standard cornmeal-S strain; banana-B strain; carrot-C strain; tomato-T strain) were identified and quantified. In total, 67 chemical compounds were identified: 48 compounds were extracted from males maintained on banana and carrot, and 47 compounds from males maintained on cornmeal and tomato substrates, while total of 60 compounds were identified in females from all strains. The strains and the sexes significantly differed in qualitative nature of their chemoprofiles after mating. Significant differences in the relative amount of three major male pheromones (cis-vaccenyl acetate-cVA, (Z)-7-pentacosene, and (Z)-7-tricosene) and in female pheromone (Z,Z)-7,11-nonacosadiene among strains were also recorded. Furthermore, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) pointed to significant differences between virgin and mated individuals of all strains and within both sexes. Differences in some of the well known sex pheromones were also identified when comparing their relative amount before and after mating. The presence of typical male pheromones in females, and vice versa may indicate their bidirectional transfer during copulation. Our results confirm significant effect of mating status on cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) phenotypes in differently fed D. melanogaster flies.

AB  - With the ever-growing concern for human health and wellbeing, the prenatal period ofdevelopment requires special attention since fetuses can be exposed to various metals through themother. Therefore, this study explored the status of selected toxic (Pb, Cd, Ni, As, Pt, Ce, Rb, Sr, U)and essential trace metals (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in the umbilical cord (UC) sera, maternal sera, andplacental tissue samples of 92 healthy women with normal pregnancies. A further aim focuses on thepotential transplacental transfer of these trace metals. Based on the obtained levels of investigatedelements in clinical samples, it was observed that all of the trace metals cross the placental barrierand reach the fetus. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed significant differences in levels oftoxic Ni, As, Cd, U, Sr, Rb, and essential Mn, Cu, and Zn between all three types of analyzed clinicalsamples. Correlation analysis highlighted As to be an element with levels that differed significantlybetween all tested samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to enhance these findings.PCA demonstrated that Cd, Mn, Zn, Rb, Ce, U, and Sr were the most influential trace metals indistinguishing placenta from maternal and UC serum samples. As, Co, and Cu were responsible forthe clustering of maternal serum samples, and PCA demonstrated that the Pt level in UC sera wasresponsible for the clustering of these samples. Overall, the findings of this study could contribute toa better understanding of transplacental transfer of these trace metals, and shed a light on overalllevels of metal exposure in the population of healthy pregnant women and their fetuses.

higher in centipedes from a polluted site (an industrial area near a busy street with heavy traffic) but C. anomalans and E.
transsylvanicus had higher Mn concentrations at an unpolluted site (a deciduous woodland on Mt. Avala). C. flavidus was
a good bioindicator for detecting differences between Zn, Se and Cd. C. flavidus and C. anomalans were more efficient in
accumulating Zn than E. transsylvanicus. It appears that C. anomalans poorly accumulated Cd, unlike C. flavidus and E.
transsylvanicus, which accumulated Cd according to the high bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values. We conclude that the
centipedes C. flavidus, C. anomalans and E. transsylvanicus can be used as suitable bioindicators of trace element exposure.
Their ability to accumulate trace elements was different and depends on their physiology and lifestyle as well as the route
of exposure.

AB  - The chemical element selenium (Se) is a nonmetal that is in trace amounts indispensable for normal cellular functioning. During pregnancy, a low Se status can increase the risk of oxidative stress. However, elevated concentrations of Se in the body can also cause oxidative stress. This study aimed to compare the effects of BSA-stabilized Se nanoparticles (SeNPs, Se0) (BSA-bovine serum albumin) and inorganic sodium selenite (NaSe, Se+4) supplementation on the histological structure of the placenta, oxidative stress parameters and the total placental Se concentration of Wistar rats during pregnancy. Pregnant females were randomized into four groups: (i) intact controls; (ii) controls that were dosed by daily oral gavage with 8.6% bovine serum albumin (BSA) and 0.125 M vit C; (iii) the SeNP group that was administered 0.5 mg of SeNPs stabilized with 8.6% BSA and 0.125 M vit C/kg bw/day by oral gavage dosing; (iv) the NaSe group, gavage dosed with 0.5 mg Na2SeO3/kg bw/day. The treatment of pregnant females started on gestational day one, lasted until day 20, and on day 21 of gestation, the fetuses with the placenta were removed from the uterus. Our findings show that the mode of action of equivalent concentrations of Se in SeNPs and NaSe depended on its redox state and chemical structure. Administration of SeNPs (Se0) increased fetal lethality and induced changes in the antioxidative defense parameters in the placenta. The accumulation of Se in the placenta was highest in SeNP-treated animals. All obtained data indicate an increased bioavailability of Se in its organic nano form and Se0 redox state in comparison to its inorganic sodium selenite form and Se+4 redox state.

The concentrations of 13 elements (the metalsMn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, Tl, Pb and U and metalloids As, Se) in whole animals and soil were measured by inductivelycoupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Differences in the concentrations of some elements in the analyzed specieswere observed, both in response to the sites and between species. In most cases, the trace element concentrations werehigher in centipedes from a polluted site (an industrial area near a busy street with heavy traffic) but C. anomalans and E.transsylvanicus had higher Mn concentrations at an unpolluted site (a deciduous woodland on Mt. Avala). C. flavidus wasa good bioindicator for detecting differences between Zn, Se and Cd. C. flavidus and C. anomalans were more efficient inaccumulating Zn than E. transsylvanicus. It appears that C. anomalans poorly accumulated Cd, unlike C. flavidus and E.transsylvanicus, which accumulated Cd according to the high bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values. We conclude that thecentipedes C. flavidus, C. anomalans and E. transsylvanicus can be used as suitable bioindicators of trace element exposure.Their ability to accumulate trace elements was different and depends on their physiology and lifestyle as well as the routeof exposure.

Polyphenolic and Chemical Profiles of Honey From the Tara Mountain in Serbia

AB  - This study presents a detailed characterization of 27 honey samples from the Tara Mountain region in Serbia using different comprehensive techniques and methods. The types of the honey samples were defined as monofloral (4 samples), honeydew (5 samples) and polyfloral (18 samples) honey based on determined polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, electrical conductivity and melissopalynological analyses. Physicochemical parameters such as pH (4.13–4.94), diastase activity (24.20–41.70 DN), acidity (14.60–29.70 meq/kg), content of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (in range below 5, up to 16.90 mg/kg), sucrose (0.20–3.90 g/100 g), and moisture content (15.01–19.23%) confirmed the required quality of the honey samples. Sensory analysis revealed honey characteristics favorable to consumers. Analyses of 19 phenolic compounds using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detection and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS) revealed six phenolic acids and 13 other compounds from the group of flavonoids and their glycosides. In all the samples the highest content was determined for p-coumaric acid, followed by caffeic acid and pinocembrin. Besides total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity, antimicrobial activity was also examined. Most honey samples showed bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and bacteriostatic activity against Escherichia coli, while none of the honey samples inhibited the growth of Candida albicans. Chemometric analyses were applied for an in-depth study of the results to further evaluate the characteristics of the honey samples studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for assessing the differences in physicochemical parameters, polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity between honey samples. The unrooted cluster tree was used to group the samples based on the melissopalynological analyses.

abstract = "This study presents a detailed characterization of 27 honey samples from the Tara Mountain region in Serbia using different comprehensive techniques and methods. The types of the honey samples were defined as monofloral (4 samples), honeydew (5 samples) and polyfloral (18 samples) honey based on determined polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, electrical conductivity and melissopalynological analyses. Physicochemical parameters such as pH (4.13–4.94), diastase activity (24.20–41.70 DN), acidity (14.60–29.70 meq/kg), content of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (in range below 5, up to 16.90 mg/kg), sucrose (0.20–3.90 g/100 g), and moisture content (15.01–19.23%) confirmed the required quality of the honey samples. Sensory analysis revealed honey characteristics favorable to consumers. Analyses of 19 phenolic compounds using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detection and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS) revealed six phenolic acids and 13 other compounds from the group of flavonoids and their glycosides. In all the samples the highest content was determined for p-coumaric acid, followed by caffeic acid and pinocembrin. Besides total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity, antimicrobial activity was also examined. Most honey samples showed bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and bacteriostatic activity against Escherichia coli, while none of the honey samples inhibited the growth of Candida albicans. Chemometric analyses were applied for an in-depth study of the results to further evaluate the characteristics of the honey samples studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for assessing the differences in physicochemical parameters, polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity between honey samples. The unrooted cluster tree was used to group the samples based on the melissopalynological analyses.",

AB  - This study deals with the evaluation of the bioaccessibility and antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds from heat-treated skim goat-milk powder fortified with grape-pomace-seed extract, after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS) analysis confirmed the abundant presence of phenolic acids and flavan-3-ols in the grape-pomace-seed extract (SE) and heat-treated skim goat-milk/seed-extract powder (TME). After in vitro digestion of TME powder and recovery of total quantified phenolics, flavan-3-ols and phenolic acids were 18.11%, 24.54%, and 1.17%, respectively. Low recovery of grape-pomace-seed phenolics indicated strong milk protein–phenolic interactions. Electrophoretic analysis of a soluble fraction of digested heat-treated skim goat milk (TM) and TME samples showed the absence of bands originating from milk proteins, indicating their hydrolysis during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The digested TME sample had better antioxidant properties in comparison to the digested TM sample (except for the ferrous ion-chelating capacity, FCC), due to the presence of bioaccessible phenolics. Taking into account the contribution of the digestive cocktail, digested TME sample had lower values of total phenolic content (TPC), in vitro phosphomolybdenum reducing capacity (TAC) and ferric reducing power (FRP), compared to the undigested TME sample. These results could be attributed to low recovery of phenolic compounds. TME powder could be a good carrier of phenolics to the colon; thus, TME powder could be a promising ingredient in the formulation of functional food.
