AB  - The variability of n-alkanes in the needle cuticular wax of Pinus heldreichii and P. peuce in two natural populations from the Scardo-Pindic mountains was investigated for the first time. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of two-year-old needles were performed us-ing an Agilent 7890A GC equipped with an inert 5975C XL EI/CI mass spectrometer detector (MSD) and a flame ionization detector (FID) connected by a capillary flow technology 2-way splitter with make-up. An HP-5MS capillary column was used. n-Alkanes ranged from C19 to C33. In P. heldreichii the most abundant were C23, C25 and C27 (16.3, 15.6 and 12.8 % on average, respectively), while in P. peuce they were C29, C25, and C27 (16.5, 15.3 and 13.5 % on average, resp.). Mid-chain and long-chain n-alkanes prevailed in both species. Principle component analysis (PCA) and Cluster analyses of five and six n-alkanes, respectively, showed divergence of the Scardo-Pindic populations from the Dinaric ones.

AB  - Seven new bisbibenzyls (1-7) were isolated from the methanol extract of the liverwort Lunularia cruciata along with one previously known bibenzyl and five known bisbibenzyls. The structures of compounds 1-7 were elucidated on the basis of the spectroscopic data. These newly isolated bisbibenzyls may be divided into two groups, the acyclic bisbibenzyls, perrottetins (1-3), and the cyclic analogues, riccardins (4-7). Besides standard perrottetin and riccardin structures (1 and 4, respectively), they contain phenanthrene (3 and 5), dihydrophenanthrene (2), and quinone moieties (6 and 7), rarely found in natural products. The new compounds 3 and 5, as well as the known riccardin G, exhibited cytotoxic activity against the A549 lung cancer cell line with IC 50 values of 5.0, 5.0, and 2.5 μM, respectively.

AB  - Satureja kitaibelii is an endemic aromatic herb used in ethnomedicine for treatment of bronchitis or cough, urinary and digestive disorders, but also as a stimulant, stomachic, carminative, expectorant, anti-catarrhal, astringent and aphrodisiac. Recent investigations also show potential anticancer activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the geographic origin and the plant organs (leaves and flowers) on the essential oil profile of S. kitaibelii. Forty-five individuals from three populations were studied, and their individual essential oils (EOs) were extracted using simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) and analysed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The essential oil composition is characterised by the domination of monoterpenes (52.5–84.9%), followed by sesquiterpenes (10.9–36.0%). Analyses showed that EO profile varied considerably from one location to another. The dominant component in population Djerdap was p-cymene (21.9%), while linalool (22.2%) and p-cymene (16.9%) dominated EO of individuals from population Poganovo. Also, in the latter population, two chemotypes were observed. Population Temšica EO profile was characterized by the presence of several co-dominant components with similar content (between 5 and 12%). Highest EO variability was observed in population Poganovo, while the lowest was in population Temšica. The essential oil profiles showed differentiation between populations in agreement with the spatial distribution. To better assess the contribution of each plant part in essential oil profile, individual parts (leaves, calyx, and corolla) and whole aerial parts of the plant were analysed from a random individual. Results showed differences between EO profiles of plant parts and whole plant (herba). Furthermore, the chemical composition of herba depends on the quantity of each plant part (leaves, calyces and corollas). Profile of essential oil also varied within the plant. Sesquiterpenes dominated the essential oil from flower parts, while monoterpenes dominated in the essential oil of leaves and aerial parts of the plant.

abstract = "Satureja kitaibelii is an endemic aromatic herb used in ethnomedicine for treatment of bronchitis or cough, urinary and digestive disorders, but also as a stimulant, stomachic, carminative, expectorant, anti-catarrhal, astringent and aphrodisiac. Recent investigations also show potential anticancer activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the geographic origin and the plant organs (leaves and flowers) on the essential oil profile of S. kitaibelii. Forty-five individuals from three populations were studied, and their individual essential oils (EOs) were extracted using simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) and analysed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The essential oil composition is characterised by the domination of monoterpenes (52.5–84.9%), followed by sesquiterpenes (10.9–36.0%). Analyses showed that EO profile varied considerably from one location to another. The dominant component in population Djerdap was p-cymene (21.9%), while linalool (22.2%) and p-cymene (16.9%) dominated EO of individuals from population Poganovo. Also, in the latter population, two chemotypes were observed. Population Temšica EO profile was characterized by the presence of several co-dominant components with similar content (between 5 and 12%). Highest EO variability was observed in population Poganovo, while the lowest was in population Temšica. The essential oil profiles showed differentiation between populations in agreement with the spatial distribution. To better assess the contribution of each plant part in essential oil profile, individual parts (leaves, calyx, and corolla) and whole aerial parts of the plant were analysed from a random individual. Results showed differences between EO profiles of plant parts and whole plant (herba). Furthermore, the chemical composition of herba depends on the quantity of each plant part (leaves, calyces and corollas). Profile of essential oil also varied within the plant. Sesquiterpenes dominated the essential oil from flower parts, while monoterpenes dominated in the essential oil of leaves and aerial parts of the plant.",

AB  - A number of potentially useful compounds with various biological activities can be obtained from plant metabolites by microorganisms. In present research, essential oil of Calamintha glandulosa was subjected to the biotransformation process by mycromicete Aspergillus niger. GC/MS analyses of the original and biotransformed essential oil have revealed six(1-6) biotransformed compounds from one of the main component-limonene and one biotransformed product (7) originating from the less abundant component-thymol. Piperitone epoxide and piperitenone epoxide, the most abundant components of the original oil, were not biotransformed but gave three artefacts (A1, A2, B1) due to the acidic conditions formed in A. niger medium. Compounds 5, 6 as well as 7 have not been previously found as a biotransformation products of limonene (5 and 6) and thymol (7), respectively. New products (5, 6, and 7) together with the artefacts, were isolated by silica gel column chromatography followed by preparative silica gel thin layer chromatography, and their structures were established by a combination of 1D and 2D NMR spectra and GC/MS data. Biotransformation has one more confirmed as useful method, complementary to synthesis, for obtaining different type of molecules.

AB  - Terpene compounds of Tanacetum macrophyllum as 1) essential oils, obtained by hydrodistillation (HD), 2) essential oil extracts, obtained by simultaneous' hydrodistillation and extraction (SDE) and 3) volatiles, obtained by Static Headspace GC-MS analysis (HS) were processed. Monoterpenes were the most dominant (49.2%, 49.5% and 90.4%, respectively). Profiles of essential oils obtained by HD and SD were quite similar, with oxygenated monoterpenes (39.3% and 39.4%) being the most abundant. In HS volatiles oxygenated monoterpenes also dominated (57.4%). Total sesquiterpenes were abundant in HD and SDE volatiles (38.2% and 39.2%, resp.), where sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were prevalent (27.3% and 28.7%, resp.). Germacrene D was dominant in HD and SDE oils (22.0% and 23.3%, resp.) and 1,8-cineole in HS volatiles (34.3%). To our knowledge, this is the first use of Headspace technique on T macrophyllum. Furthermore, this is the first comparison of different techniques of volatile extraction in T. macrophyllum.

AB  - The n-alkane composition in the leaf cuticular waxes of natural populations of Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii), Austrian pine (P.nigra), and Macedonian pine (P.peuce) was compared for the first time. The range of n-alkanes was wider in P.nigra (C-16-C-33) than in P.heldreichii and P.peuce (C-18-C-33). Species also diverged in abundance and range of dominant n-alkanes (P. heldreichii: C-23, C-27, and C-25; P.nigra: C-25, C-27, C-29, and C-23; P.peuce: C-29, C-25, C-27, and C-23). Multivariate statistical analyses (PCA, DA, and CA) generally pointed out separation of populations of P.nigra from populations of P.heldreichii and P.peuce (which were, to a greater or lesser extent, separated too). However, position of these species on the basis of n-alkane composition was in accordance neither with infrageneric classification nor with recent molecular and terpene investigations.

Seven new compounds for P. cembra, such as methyl daniellate (0.5%), 1,8 cineole (0.2%) and trans-cadina-1(6),4-diene (0.2%), etc. were found. In needle cuticular wax of P. cembra the amount of nonacosan-10-ol was 75.8%. n-Alkanes ranged from C-20 to C-35 with the most dominant C-31, C-29 and C-33 (33.4%, 16.9%, and 9.6%, resp.). Differences in terpene profiles between Slovakian and Greece from one side and Romanian and Polish cembran pines on the other side could be the consequence of its disjuncted areal in Carpathian Mountains caused by glaciation and survival of species in different ecological niches. Obtained differences in n-alkane profiles among our and literature results could be the consequence of different age of trees.

AB  - The essential oil of Thymus algeriensis was analyzed as a potential preservative in soft cheese. We developed a novel method to test the preserving properties of essential oil in soft cheese. Contamination incidence of Penicillium aurantiogriseum was absent after 30 d of storage at 4 degrees C with 25 mu L of essential oil added. The antimicrobial activity was tested against 8 bacteria and 8 fungi. Thymus algeriensis oil showed inhibitory activity against tested bacteria at 0.03 to 0.09 mg/mL, and bactericidal activity was achieved at 0.05 to 0.15 mg/mL. For antifungal activity, minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL and minimum fungicidal concentrations between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL. Furthermore, the oil was also screened for antiradical activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay. The results showed that the oil was active and achieved half-maximal inhibitory activity at 0.132 mg/mL. We used gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry to investigate the volatile compounds from the oil. Carvacrol was identified as the main compound in the oil, represented by 80.9% of the total constituents, followed by p-cymene (7.7%).

AB  - We examined for the first time the leaf micromorphology, phytochemistry and biological activity of the rare and stenoendemic Amphoricarpos elegans Albov (Compositae) from Georgia. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of glandular trichomes on the leaves, which appeared as glandular dots that are considered the main sites of biosynthesis and accumulation of sesquiterpene lactones. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analyses, we identify and characterized 3-deoxyamphoricarpolide, a known sesquiterpene lactone for the genus Amphoricarpos Vis. Regarding chemotaxonomic significance, 3-deoxyamphoricarpolide represents a link between Balkan and Caucasian species of the genus. The antioxidative capacity of different leaf extracts, obtained using a Soxhlet extractor, was evaluated by two radical scavenging assays: DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical and the 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined. The highest antioxidative activity and the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents were detected in the methanol fraction, as a result of the contribution of not only phenols, but probably also lactones. The considerable antioxidative potential indicates possible applications in pharmacy and medicine.

Fatty acid composition of the cypselae of two endemic Centaurea species (Asteraceae)

AB  - The fatty acid composition of cypselae of two endemic species from Macedonia, Centaurea galicicae and C. tomorosii, is analysed for the first time, using GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry). In the cypselae of C. galicicae, 11 fatty acids were identified, palmitic (hexadecanoic) acid (32.5%) being the most dominant. Other fatty acids were elaidic [(E)-octadec-9-enoic] acid (13.9%), stearic (octadecanoic) acid (12.8%) and linoleic [(9Z,12Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic] acid (10.6%). Of the 11 identified fatty acids, seven were saturated fatty acids, which represented 41.5% of total fatty acids, while unsaturated fatty acids altogether constituted 58.5%. In the cypselae of C. tomorosii, five fatty acids were identified. The major fatty acid was linolelaidic [(9E,12E)-octadeca- 9,12-dienoic] acid (48.8%). The second most dominant fatty acid was oleic [(9Z)-octadec-9-enoic] acid (34.2%). Thus, unsaturated fatty acids were present with 83%. The other three fatty acids identified were saturated fatty acids, which represented 17% of total fatty acids. As a minor fatty acid, levulinic (4-oxopentanoic) acid was determined in both C. galicicae and C. tomorosii (0.3% and 3.2%, respectively). The obtained results differ from published data on dominant fatty acids in the cypselae of other species belonging to the same section as the species investigated in the present paper (section Arenariae, subgenus Acrolophus, genus Centaurea). They also, differ from published data referable to other genera belonging to the same tribe (Cardueae). Multivariate statistical analyses showed that the composition of needle terpenes reflects clear divergence among the pine species from different subgenera: P. peuce (subgenus Strobus) vs. P. nigra and P. heldreichii (subgenus Pinus). In addition, despite the described morphological similarities and the fact that P. nigra and P. heldreichii may spontaneously hybridize, our results indicated differentiation of their populations naturally growing in the same area. In accordance with recently proposed concept of flavonic evolution' in the genus Pinus, we assumed that the terpene profile of soft pine P. peuce, defined by high amounts of six monoterpenes, is more basal than those of hard pines P. nigra and P. heldreichii, which were characterized by high content levels of mainly sesquiterpenes. In order to establish precise positions of P. heldreichii, P. nigra and P. peuce within the taxonomic and phylogenetic tree, as well as develop suitable conservation strategies and future breeding efforts, it is necessary to perform additional morphological, biochemical, and genetic studies.

AB  - The essential oil, different extracts, and isolated compounds of Angelica pancicii Vandas (Apiaceae) were investigated for the first time. The GC-FID and GC-MS analyses revealed sesquiterpenoids as the main constituents of A. pancicii essential oil of aerial parts with bornyl acetate (8.08%), n-octanol (5.82%), kessane (4.26%), and beta-selinene (4.26%) as the main constituents. Analysis of methanol extracts, using an HPLC-DAD/ESI-ToF-MS system, showed a total of 52 compounds in the aerial parts and 53 in the roots, indicating coumarins as the main constituents. In addition, new chromone (1) and six known furanocoumarins (2-7) were isolated from the roots and structurally elucidated by combined spectroscopic methods. The aerial part extracts exhibited higher polyphenolic contents and antioxidant activity evaluated by three radical scavenging assays. Using a microwell dilution method, the strongest antibacterial activity profiles were determined for ethanol and methanol root extracts (minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) = 0.25-3.00 mg/mL), which were comparable to the activity of streptomycin (MBCs = 0.34-1.24 mg/mL), while the strongest antibacterial compound of A. pancicii was oxypeucedanin hydrate (MBCs = 0.50-8.00 mg/mL). Antifungal potential was in moderate extent, and the highest activity was obtained for root methanol extract (minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) = 4.00-14.00 mg/mL). Tested sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (subMICs) of the extracts and isolated compounds inhibited selected Pseudomonasaeruginosa PAO1 virulence determinants. The most reduced growth of P. aeruginosa colony was in the presence of isolated oxypeucedanin. Ethanol (17.36-46.98%) and methanol (34.54-52.43%) root extracts showed higher anti-biofilm activity compared to streptomycin (49.40-88.36%) and ampicillin (56.46-92.16%).

AB  - Morphological characters and the composition of epicuticular leaf n-alkanes of two Satureja subspicata Bartl. ex Vis. subspecies (subsp. liburnica Sili and subsp. subspicata) from nine natural populations along Dinaric Alps range were studied. Morphological characters were chosen based on Silis subspecies separation. Seventeen n-alkane homologues (C-19 - C-35) were identified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and GC/flame ionisation detector (FID). The most abundant n-alkane in all populations was n-nonacosane (C-29), followed by n-hentriacontane (C-31), with the exception of Divaa population where these two alkanes were co-dominant. Diversity and variability of n-alkane patterns and morphological characters and their relation to different geographic and bioclimatic parameters, including exposure, were analysed by several statistical multivariate methods (PCA, HCA, Discriminant Analysis, Mantel test). These tests showed clear separation of subsp. liburnica from subsp. subspicata, even though population Velebit showed separation from other subsp. liburnica populations based on phytochemical characters. Mantel test showed high correlation with geographical distribution in both investigated data sets. High correlation between morphological and phytochemical characters was also established. However, exposure can influence n-alkane profile, suggesting precaution while taking samples from natural habitats.

AB  - GC-FID and GC-MS were used to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil of the aerial parts of Heracleum orphanidis Boiss. Also, the HPLC-DAD/ESI-ToF-MS profile of the methanol extracts of aerial parts and roots was determined. The main components of the essential oil were n-octanol, octyl hexanoate and n-octyl acetate, while coumarins were the most prevalent compounds in methanol extracts. An evaluation of antioxidant activity showed that the methanol and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts had the highest potential. In terms of antimicrobial activity determined by microdilution assays, the essential oil and methanol extract of the roots showed the greatest effectiveness. The colonies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 treated with H. orphanidis samples produced less toxic pyocyanin, showed lower twitching and flagella mobility and biofilm formatting was reduced. The analyses in this study showed the considerable biological potential of H. orphanidis considering free radicals and various pathogenic strains, including the wild type of P. aeruginosa.

AB  - The chemical composition, antimicrobial and antiquorum sensing activity of the essential oil of Micromeria thymifolia (Scop.) Fritsch were investigated. Limonene, piperitone epoxide and piperitenone epoxide were found as the main constituents using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the oil was tested against six bacterial and seven fungal strains and high antimicrobial potential was noticed. Minimum inhibitory concentration varied from 0.031 mg/mL to 0.5 mg/mL for bacterial and 0.062 mg/mL to 0.5 mg/mL for fungal strains. The antiquorum properties of the essential oil were evaluated on Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. The oil was tested at subMiC concentrations for anti-quorum sensing activity. The analyses on quorum-sensing functions have been carried out by evaluating twitching and swarming of bacterial cultures and the total amount of pyocyanin production produced by P. aeruginosa. This study showed that M thymifolia essential oil exhibited antiquorum sensing activity and may be used as an antipathogenic drug.

AB  - The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of Artemisia judaica L., Artemisia herbaalba Asso. and Artemisia arborescens L. (cultivated) from Libya, were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The antimicrobial properties were determined using the broth microdilution method against eight bacterial species: Bacillus cereus (clinical isolate), Micrococcus flavus (ATCC10240), Listeria monocytogenes (NCTC7973), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC35210), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC13311), Enterobacter cloacae (human isolates) and eight fungal species: Aspergillus niger (ATCC6275), A. ochraceus (ATCC12066), A. versicolor (ATCC11730), A. fumigatus (ATCC1022), Penicillium ochrochloron (ATCC9112), P. funiculosum (ATCC10509), Trichoderma viride (IAM5061) and Candida albicans (human isolate). The major constituents of A. arborescens oil were sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (47.4%). Oxygenated monoterpenes were the dominant constituents in the A. judaica and A. herba-alba oils (54.2% and 77.3%, respectively). Camphor (24.7%) and chamazulene (20.9%) were the major components in the essential oil of A. arborescens, chrysanthenone (20.8%), cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (17.6%) and cis-thujone (13.6%) dominated in the A. herba-alba oil, and the major constituents in the A. judaica oil were piperitone (30.21%) and cis-chrysanthenol (9.1%). The best antimicrobial activity was obtained for A. judaica oil and the lowest effect was noticed in A. arborescens oil. The effect of the tested oils was higher against Gram (+) than Gram (-) bacteria. All three oils showed the best antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and the lowest against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, compared to streptomycin and ampicillin. All three oils showed better antifungal activities than ketoconazole, except A. arborescens oil against Aspergillus niger.

The antimicrobial properties were determined using the broth microdilution method against eight bacterial species: Bacillus cereus (clinical isolate), Micrococcus flavus (ATCC10240), Listeria monocytogenes (NCTC7973), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC35210), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC13311), Enterobacter cloacae (human isolates) and eight fungal species: Aspergillus niger (ATCC6275), A. ochraceus (ATCC12066), A. versicolor (ATCC11730), A. fumigatus (ATCC1022), Penicillium ochrochloron (ATCC9112), P. funiculosum (ATCC10509), Trichoderma viride (IAM5061) and Candida albicans (human isolate). The major constituents of A. arborescens oil were sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (47.4%). Oxygenated monoterpenes were the dominant constituents in the A. judaica and A. herba-alba oils (54.2% and 77.3%, respectively). Camphor (24.7%) and chamazulene (20.9%) were the major components in the essential oil of A. arborescens, chrysanthenone (20.8%), cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (17.6%) and cis-thujone (13.6%) dominated in the A. herba-alba oil, and the major constituents in the A. judaica oil were piperitone (30.21%) and cis-chrysanthenol (9.1%). The best antimicrobial activity was obtained for A. judaica oil and the lowest effect was noticed in A. arborescens oil. The effect of the tested oils was higher against Gram (+) than Gram (-) bacteria. All three oils showed the best antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and the lowest against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, compared to streptomycin and ampicillin. All three oils showed better antifungal activities than ketoconazole, except A. arborescens oil against Aspergillus niger.",
