AB  - Three centipede species (Clinopodes flavidus, Cryptops anomalans and Eupolybothrus transsylvanicus) were usedas bioindicators of trace metal and metalloid pollution in Belgrade, Serbia. The concentrations of 13 elements (the metalsMn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, Tl, Pb and U and metalloids As, Se) in whole animals and soil were measured by inductivelycoupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Differences in the concentrations of some elements in the analyzed specieswere observed, both in response to the sites and between species. In most cases, the trace element concentrations werehigher in centipedes from a polluted site (an industrial area near a busy street with heavy traffic) but C. anomalans and E.transsylvanicus had higher Mn concentrations at an unpolluted site (a deciduous woodland on Mt. Avala). C. flavidus wasa good bioindicator for detecting differences between Zn, Se and Cd. C. flavidus and C. anomalans were more efficient inaccumulating Zn than E. transsylvanicus. It appears that C. anomalans poorly accumulated Cd, unlike C. flavidus and E.transsylvanicus, which accumulated Cd according to the high bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values. We conclude that thecentipedes C. flavidus, C. anomalans and E. transsylvanicus can be used as suitable bioindicators of trace element exposure.Their ability to accumulate trace elements was different and depends on their physiology and lifestyle as well as the routeof exposure.

AB  - The status of essential and toxic trace elements in patients with different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is still
unclear and not well characterized. The present study examined the circulatory levels of a wide panel of trace elements (Al,
Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Cd, Pb, and U) in hemodialysis patients (HD group) and pre-dialysis patients with
stage 3 CKD (PD group). Comparisons were made between groups of patients and healthy individuals from the control group
(CG). The levels of Al, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Sr, and Pb were higher, while the levels of Cr, Zn, Rb, Cd, and U were lower
in HD patients than in our CG. Higher levels of Al and Se, as well as lower levels of As, Sr, Zn, Rb, and U were significant
and distinguished HD from PD. Among other analyzed elements, Co, Se, and U are the only trace elements that did not
distinguish PD from CG at a statistically significant level. The HD group had lower serum U levels than the PD group, and
this could be a result of hemodialysis. This study also revealed that the Cu/Zn ratio could be used as a marker for early and
late detection of renal failure. Marked changes of essential and toxic trace element levels in sera indicate additional pathophysiological
events in CKD, which could additionally contribute to the preexisting increased morbidity of HD patients.
Measurement of trace elements in HD patients should be performed routinely.

AB  - To replace common organic solvents that present inherent toxicity and have high volatility and to improve the extraction efficiency, a range of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were evaluated for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Agrimonia eupatoria. Screening of NADES efficiency was carried out based on the total phenolic and flavonoid content and radical-scavenging activity, determined by spectrophotometry, as well as phenolic compounds quantified, obtained using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector and a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Increased extraction efficiency when compared with organic solvent was achieved using NADES mixtures choline chloride (ChCl):urea 1:2 and choline chloride:glycerol 1:1. Flavonol glycosides were the most abundant compounds in all extracts. The COSMO-RS model provided insights into the most important intermolecular interactions that drive the extraction process. Moreover, it could explain the extraction efficiency of flavonol glycosides using ChCl:glycerol NADES. The current article offers experimental evidence and mechanistic insights for the selection of optimal NADES to extract bioactive components from Agrimonia eupatoria. © 2022 by the authors.

Methods: The present study explored the status of ETEs (Mn, Cu, Zn, and Se) in sera of healthy women before and after vaccination with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a follow-up period of six months. The main aim was to explore links between ETE levels and IgG antibodies produced against Spike glycoprotein's Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD). Results: A recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprising the receptor binding domain was successfully expressed in HEK-293 T cells. The purified protein was suitable for producing a sensitive antibody detection assay for human serum and monitored seropositivity, indicating a transient response with peak anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels 2 months after vaccination. In parallel to increasing antibody titers, serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Se were not affected by vaccination, and concentrations remained relatively constant at the different sampling times during the 6-month observation period. Total serum Zn concentrations were slightly elevated when compared between the first and last sampling dates. Overall, no consistent effects of vaccination on any of the three trace elements analyzed in our study were observed. Conclusion: Vaccination of adult healthy female volunteers with an mRNA vaccine was not associated with consistent changes in serum trace element concentrations over a six-month observation period.

AB  - Progressive industrialization in recent decades has contributed to the increase of metal levels in the environment, which has a dangerous impact on human health, primarily pregnant women. In this study, we aimed to compare levels of various elements in maternal and umbilical cord (UC) plasma samples collected from 125 healthy pregnant women, conduct correlation analysis among paired plasma samples, and compare our data with other populations worldwide. The study design included the following elements: essential (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo), non-essential (Be, Al, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Sb, Pb, U), rare earth (La, Pr, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er), and noble metals (Ru, Rh, Re, Pt). Levels of 30 elements were higher in maternal plasma than in UC plasma samples. However, no disparities at the statistically significant level were found for Be, Zn, Rb, Cd, Ce, and Ho. Correlation analysis among paired plasma samples revealed only positive/synergistic correlations of different strengths between most elements. Compared to other countries across the globe, our participants had considerably lower plasma levels of Zn and higher levels of Co, Ni, and As. This study provides not only a new and deeper comprehension, but also the first insight into the levels, correlation, distribution, and potential transplacental transfer of 30 elements.

AB  - According to recent research, even low levels of environmental chemicals, particularly heavy metals, can considerably disrupt placental homeostasis. This review aims to explore the profile of non-essential trace metals in placental tissues across the globe and to specify trace metal(s) that can be candidates for impaired placental health. Accordingly, we conducted an extensive survey on relevant databases of peer-reviewed papers published in the last two decades. Among a considerable number of non-essential trace metals, arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) were identified as the most detrimental to placental health. Comparative analysis showed remarkable differences in placental levels of these trace metals worldwide. Based on current data reported across the globe, a median (min–max) range from 0.55 to 15 ng/g for placental As levels could be deemed safe. The placental Cd and Pb levels were markedly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Occupationally exposed pregnant women had several orders of magnitude higher Cd, Pb, and Hg levels in placental tissues than non-occupationally exposed women. Also, we concluded that even low-level exposure to As, Cd, Pb, and Hg could be deleterious to proper fetal development. This review implies the need to reduce exposure to non-essential trace metals to preserve placental health and prevent numerous poor pregnancy outcomes. AB  - Due to the recognized harmful effects of some trace elements on fetal development after long-term exposures, it is first important to address their basic/physiological levels before monitoring toxicological effects and clinical outcomes on prenatal and postnatal health. This research aimed to define, for the first time, reference values for multiple (ultra) trace elements in umbilical cord blood (UCB) plasma samples of a notable number of healthy pregnant women (n = 125). All samples were collected during 2020–2021 and all participants were from Belgrade and two regions (Šumadija and Podunavlje). Following trace elements were enrolled in this study: essential (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo), toxic (Be, Al, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Pb, Th, U), rare earth (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm), and noble metals (Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Ir, Os, Pt). UCB plasma samples were diluted with suitable solvents and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The analytical technique used was validated by the standard addition method and using certified reference materials. Zn was found in the highest amount and Tm in the least amount. Be, Co, Ag, Sb, La, and Ce exhibited statistically significant differences in the four age groups (20 to 41 years), whereas Ag and Ce showed a tendency to increase with age. Furthermore, our participants had notably higher As, Ni, and Co, levels and lower Zn levels compared to other populations. This is the first study that, in addition to analyzing essential and toxic trace elements, also provided an analysis of noble and rare earth elements in UCB plasma samples. Presented results can be used as a starting point or database for further studies, in terms of predicting the pregnancy outcome and postnatal development.

AB  - With the ever-growing concern for human health and wellbeing, the prenatal period ofdevelopment requires special attention since fetuses can be exposed to various metals through themother. Therefore, this study explored the status of selected toxic (Pb, Cd, Ni, As, Pt, Ce, Rb, Sr, U)and essential trace metals (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) in the umbilical cord (UC) sera, maternal sera, andplacental tissue samples of 92 healthy women with normal pregnancies. A further aim focuses on thepotential transplacental transfer of these trace metals. Based on the obtained levels of investigatedelements in clinical samples, it was observed that all of the trace metals cross the placental barrierand reach the fetus. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed significant differences in levels oftoxic Ni, As, Cd, U, Sr, Rb, and essential Mn, Cu, and Zn between all three types of analyzed clinicalsamples. Correlation analysis highlighted As to be an element with levels that differed significantlybetween all tested samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to enhance these findings.PCA demonstrated that Cd, Mn, Zn, Rb, Ce, U, and Sr were the most influential trace metals indistinguishing placenta from maternal and UC serum samples. As, Co, and Cu were responsible forthe clustering of maternal serum samples, and PCA demonstrated that the Pt level in UC sera wasresponsible for the clustering of these samples. Overall, the findings of this study could contribute toa better understanding of transplacental transfer of these trace metals, and shed a light on overalllevels of metal exposure in the population of healthy pregnant women and their fetuses.

The research was amplified by analyzing blood samples from the same participants. Results: Among the analyzed (ultra)trace elements in semen samples, Zn is the most and Tm is the least prominent. Zn levels in semen are so high that Zn should be considered as a macroelement in this matrix. Conclusion: The reported data can be used as baseline levels/reference values for 44 elements in human semen. Furthermore, the findings of this study could be relevant for further consideration of male infertility.

Comparing IR spectra of the oils and model n-alkanes, it was established that the average (CH2)n methylene chain length per СН3 group varied from n = 3.5 to 6.5. The CH2/CH3 ratio showed significant concordance with geochemical para­meters, enabling clear distinction of the oils according to source and deposi­ti­onal environment of OM. At the same time, dependence of the CH2/CH3 ratio on oil maturity in the range from immature to mature was not observed, allowing for an accurate determination of oil genetic types irrespective of maturity. The CH2/CH3 ratio showed good accordance with oil biodegradation scale and oil viscosity.

AB  - In order to explain the development of understanding of chemical concepts at the
macroscopic, submicroscopic and symbolic level over time, models of the expanding
triangle and rising iceberg are proposed. In order to validate the two models, this
study examined whether the depth of understanding of the concepts physical and
chemical changes at each of the levels significantly changes with the age of students,
whether selected age groups exhibit significant differences in understanding at the
three levels, and whether findings for these age groups differ. Therefore, 121 14-yearold, 108 16-year-old and 112 19-year-old students completed the test that checked
their understanding of the aforementioned concepts, at all three levels. The 16-
and 19-year-old students significantly outperformed the 14-year-old students at
each of the levels, while all age groups showed significantly better understanding
of physical and chemical changes at the macroscopic and symbolic, in comparison
to the submicroscopic level. It was concluded that, while the proposed models are
generally valid, the applied teaching approaches and the composition of the chemistry
curriculum have a profound impact on the development of students’ conceptual
understanding, at all three levels of chemistry knowledge.

AB  - Raspberries are considered valuable fruits due to their high levels of nutrients and phytochemicals, which have many beneficial effects on humans. As many external factors affect the composition of these fruits (the type of cultivation, soil characteristics, ripeness, storage time and post-harvest technologies, cultivar/genotype, and climatic conditions), the goal of this study was to analyze different raspberry cultivars grown in Norway. Considering that Norway is a country with specific climatic conditions, as well as has a limited period of fruit vegetation, another important goal of this study was also to compare raspberries from different Norwegian areas, as well as different grown cultivars. Modern analytical techniques, such as high-performance anion-exchange liquid chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPEAC-PAD), ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS), and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), provided a detailed examination of the raspberry extract samples. Based on their high levels of minerals (especially N, P, and K), organic acids (predominantly citric and malic acids), sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and galactose), and polyphenols (ellagic acid, syringic acid, quercetin, and rutin), Norwegian raspberries could be considered fruits with increased health-beneficial compounds. The chemical composition of the studied cultivars depended on the locality of growth

AB  - Blueberries, which are recognized by their colored fruits and exquisite flavor and taste, are a great source of bioactive substances with potential functional properties. For the purpose of this study, the blueberry cultivars ‘Duke’, ‘Chandler’ and ‘Bluecrop’ were picked at four different times. The aim of the study was to compare the cultivars and determine the best time for picking fruits for table consumption and to produce berries that can be used as functional foods with elevated levels of bioactive compounds. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the most influential traits for distinguishing different times of harvest in the ‘Duke’ cultivar were sorbitol, glucose, sucrose, and turanose; for the cultivar ‘Chandler’, they were caffeic acid, aesculetin, and quercetin; for the ‘Bluecrop’, they were fructose, maltose, radical scavenging activity, and quercetin. Blueberry fruits aimed for table consumption were those harvested in the first two pickings of the cultivar ‘Duke’, in the first and third of the ‘Bluecrop’, and in the third picking time of the cultivar ‘Chandler’, due to the highest fruit size and very high level of sugar (mostly glucose and fructose). ‘Duke’ berries from the second and third harvest (high level of total phenolic content, radical scavenging activity, total anthocyanins, aesculin, quercetin, and isorhamnetin), ‘Chandler’ from the first and third (the highest p-hydroxybenzoic acid, aesculetin, caffeic acid, phloridzin, kaempferol, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, rutin, and quercetin) and ‘Bluecrop’ from the third harvest (highest level of total phenolics, radical scavenging activity, quercetin, rutin, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, and isorhamnetin) had the highest levels of health-promoting compounds.

AB  - Correct elucidation of physiological and pathological processes mediated by extracellular vesicles (EV) is highly dependent on the reliability of the method used for their purification. Currently available chemical/physical protocols for sample fractionation are time-consuming, often scarcely reproducible and their yields are low. Immuno-capture based approaches could represent an effective purification alternative to obtain homogeneous EV samples. An easy-to-operate chromatography system was set-up for the purification of intact EVs based on a single domain (VHH) antibodies-copolymer matrix suitable for biological samples as different as conditioned cell culture medium and human plasma. Methacrylate-based copolymer is a porous solid support, the chemical versatility of which enables its efficient functionalization with VHHs. The combined analyses of morphological features and biomarker (CD9, CD63 and CD81) presence indicated that the recovered EVs were exosomes. The lipoprotein markers APO-A1 and APO-B were both negative in tested samples. This is the first report demonstrating the successful application of spherical porous methacrylate-based copolymer coupled with VHHs for the exosome isolation from biological fluids. This inexpensive immunoaffinity method has the potential to be applied for the isolation of EVs belonging to different morphological and physiological classes.

AB  - Novel macroporous copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate with mean pore size diameters ranging from 150 to 310 nm were synthesized by dispersion polymerization and modified with ethylenediamine. The glutaraldehyde and periodate method were employed to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) onto these carriers. The activity of the immobilized enzyme was greatly affected by the pore size of the carrier. The highest specific activities of 9.65 and 8.94 U/g of dry weight were obtained for HRP immobilized by the periodate-route onto poly(GMA‐co‐EGDMA) carriers with pore size diameters of 234 and 297 nm, respectively. Stability studies showed an improved operational stability of immobilized peroxidase at 65 °C and in an organic solvent. HRP immobilized on a copolymer with a pore size of 234 nm, showing the highest specific activity and good stability, had higher activities at almost all pH values than the native enzyme and the increased Km value for pyrogallol oxidation. Immobilized HRP retained 80% of its original activity after five consecutive cycles of the pyrogallol oxidation and 98% of its initial activity in a storage stability study. Enzyme immobilized onto the macroporous copolymer with the pore size diameter of 234 nm showed a substantial degree of phenol removal achieved by immobilized peroxidase.

AB  - All water-water contacts in the crystal structures from the Cambridge Structural Database with d OO ≤ 4.0 Å have been found. These contacts were analysed on the basis of their geometries and interaction energies from CCSD(T)/CBS calculations. The results show 6729 attractive water-water contacts, of which 4717 are classical hydrogen bonds (d OH ≤ 3.0 Å and α ≥ 120°) with most being stronger than -3.3 kcal mol-1. Beyond the region of these hydrogen bonds, there is a large number of attractive interactions (2062). The majority are antiparallel dipolar interactions, where the O - H bonds of two water molecules lying in parallel planes are oriented antiparallel to each other. Developing geometric criteria for these antiparallel dipoles (β1, β2 ≥ 160°, 80 ≤ α ≤ 140° and T HOHO > 40°) yielded 1282 attractive contacts. The interaction energies of these antiparallel oriented water molecules are up to -4.7 kcal mol-1, while most of the contacts have interaction energies in the range -0.9 to -2.1 kcal mol-1. This study suggests that the geometric criteria for defining attractive water-water interactions should be broader than the classical hydrogen-bonding criteria, a change that may reveal undiscovered and unappreciated interactions controlling molecular structure and chemistry. © 2022 Milan R. AB  - To replace common organic solvents that present inherent toxicity and have high volatility and to improve the extraction efficiency, a range of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were evaluated for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Agrimonia eupatoria. Screening of NADES efficiency was carried out based on the total phenolic and flavonoid content and radical-scavenging activity, determined by spectrophotometry, as well as phenolic compounds quantified, obtained using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector and a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Increased extraction efficiency when compared with organic solvent was achieved using NADES mixtures choline chloride (ChCl):urea 1:2 and choline chloride:glycerol 1:1. Flavonol glycosides were the most abundant compounds in all extracts. The COSMO-RS model provided insights into the most important intermolecular interactions that drive the extraction process. Moreover, it could explain the extraction efficiency of flavonol glycosides using ChCl:glycerol NADES. The current article offers experimental evidence and mechanistic insights for the selection of optimal NADES to extract bioactive components from Agrimonia eupatoria. © 2022 by the authors.

The results were strengthened by comparing recorded findings with the patients’ healthy adrenal tissue (HAT) and with whole blood samples from the healthy individuals. PCCs had significantly higher levels of Zn, Se, Na, K, and Mg and lower levels of Mn, Co, Pb, and As than that of HATs. Compared to healthy blood samples, the patients’ blood exhibited considerably higher levels of Na, K, and Ca but significantly lower levels of Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, and Mg. Females had significantly higher levels of essential Se and toxic Pb and Cd in their PCC tissue samples compared to males. PCC tissue levels of Mn and Cu were significantly elevated in smokers over levels in nonsmokers and in PCC patients with tumor sizes below 5 cm compared to PCC diameters above 5 cm. The data presented in this study provide a new insight into the pathophysiology of PCC. Thus, recorded elements should be considered as initiators/modifiers of PCC and potential inductors of malignant transformation. The findings of this research deepen scientific understanding of this rare adrenal disease, which, in turn, could highlight the pathogenesis of PCC.

AB  - Blueberries, which are recognized by their colored fruits and exquisite flavor and taste, are a great source of bioactive substances with potential functional properties. For the purpose of this study, the blueberry cultivars ‘Duke’, ‘Chandler’ and ‘Bluecrop’ were picked at four different times. The aim of the study was to compare the cultivars and determine the best time for picking fruits for table consumption and to produce berries that can be used as functional foods with elevated levels of bioactive compounds. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the most influential traits for distinguishing different times of harvest in the ‘Duke’ cultivar were sorbitol, glucose, sucrose, and turanose; for the cultivar ‘Chandler’, they were caffeic acid, aesculetin, and quercetin; for the ‘Bluecrop’, they were fructose, maltose, radical scavenging activity, and quercetin. Blueberry fruits aimed for table consumption were those harvested in the first two pickings of the cultivar ‘Duke’, in the first and third of the ‘Bluecrop’, and in the third picking time of the cultivar ‘Chandler’, due to the highest fruit size and very high level of sugar (mostly glucose and fructose). ‘Duke’ berries from the second and third harvest (high level of total phenolic content, radical scavenging activity, total anthocyanins, aesculin, quercetin, and isorhamnetin), ‘Chandler’ from the first and third (the highest p-hydroxybenzoic acid, aesculetin, caffeic acid, phloridzin, kaempferol, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, rutin, and quercetin) and ‘Bluecrop’ from the third harvest (highest level of total phenolics, radical scavenging activity, quercetin, rutin, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, and isorhamnetin) had the highest levels of health-promoting compounds.
