AB  - Propranolol hydrochloride (PRO, Fig. 1), beta-blocker, is poorly degradable in wastewater treatment plants. Because of its wide use, it could pose a threat to aquatic organisms and water users. [1]
The non-thermal plasma reactor (Fig. 2) is tested for degradation of propranolol hydrochloride solution (100 ppm), using different gases under the same electrical conditions (35 W of power dissipated in plasma). 
The concentration of PRO in samples was quantified using HPLC-DAD (213 nm), with acetonitrile and water (70/30 V/V) as eluents. The retention time of PRO was 5.100 min.
The most successful propranolol hydrochloride degradation was achieved using Ar with O2 (80/20 V/V), applying 35 W of power dissipated in plasma, almost 80 % in the 1stcycle of treatment (Fig. 3). The best results with air are slightly over 80 % but in the 10th cycle of plasma reactor treatment.
The presence of N2 in the air decreases the availability of reactive oxygen species, as shown in [2].
This non-thermal plasma is successful at the degradation of organic pollutants in water, such as propranolol hydrochloride, under given conditions.
The level of propranolol hydrochloride degradation can be increased modifying the composition of feed gas, with best results using Ar with O2.

Microstructure (TEM, FE-SEM, XRD) and electrochemical (CV, EIS) characterization methods were used to investigate composite properties and to confirm the successful modification of the electrodes. Under the optimal conditions, linear working range and limit of detection were 2.5–500 μg/mL and 1.55 μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, the effect of some possibly interfering compounds was investigated and the immunosensor was used for real sample analysis. The results showed that the sensor exhibited accurate, precise and sensitive characteristics and can be promising replacement to the convention methods for albumin detection in clinical practice.

AB  - The analysis of isotope ratios of lead in the mushrooms and soil, where they were grown, assisted with a principal component analysis, offered a new perspective for understanding possible chemical environment in a real setup of those compartments. The content of lead and its isotope compositions were determined in soil samples and mushroom Macrolepiota procera from unpolluted area of Mountain Goč, Serbia. Sequential extraction procedure based on the Commission of the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) was applied on soil samples in order to determine the distribution of lead in the labile and un-labile fractions of the soil. Caps and stipes of mushrooms were subjected to microwave acid-assisted digestion prior to measurements by inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometer for determination of lead content and lead isotope ratios. Information about the chemical fractionation of Pb in soil, Pb isotopic data from soil fractions and fruiting bodies allowed a more detailed insight on the uptake mechanisms. Lead was predominantly associated with reducible fraction (~ 60%). Only its small portion (∼ 1%) was present in the exchangeable and acid-extractable fractions suggesting the low mobility of Pb. Lead isotope analysis revealed the presence of anthropogenic lead in the surface soil. Significant lower 206Pb/207Pb compared with other fractions was found in exchangeable and acid-soluble fraction (1.331 ± 0.010), which corresponds to the isotope ratio of European gasoline. The highest 206Pb/207Pb ratio was observed in reducible fraction (1.162 ± 0.007), while in oxidizable and residual fraction, those values were similar (1.159 ± 0.006 and 1.159 ± 0.004, respectively). Distinction of exchangeable and acid-extractable fractions from others was also confirmed, for the first time, by principal component analysis. The analysis of four isotope ratios (206Pb/207Pb, 208Pb/206Pb, 206Pb/204Pb, and 207Pb/204Pb) indicated that the analyzed M. procera accumulates lead from the first two fractions of topsoil layers.

AB  - Materials held within mine tailings pose a serious risk to the environment in cases of tailings dam failure. Collapse of the tailing dam at the Stolice antimony mine in West Serbia caused a spilling of tailing slurry into the nearby river watersheds. Medium-term effects of As, Pb, Sb, Zn, and Cd from the tailings material that remained in the flooded zone 3 years after the initial exposure were evaluated. Mobility of these elements was determined by analyzing their distribution between exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual phases. Results indicate that Fe-Mn oxides represent important sinks for As, Cd, Pb, and Sb. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that concentrations of the analyzed elements were related to sand-sized fractions, as they tended to adsorb or co-precipitate as coatings on larger particles (particularly feldspar and quartz) upon the change of redox conditions. Assessment of the most relevant physico-chemical factors, metal(loid) concentration, and mobility can be used as tool to characterize the degree of contamination of impacted sites. Percentage of sand-sized particles, content of investigated metal(loid)s, and their amount in the reducible fractions are factors determining the best remediation techniques for the area impacted by tailing spill.

AB  - The background level of lead (Pb) in drinking water in Serbia represents a significant health issue. The aim of study was to examine the content of significant toxic and essential trace metals (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Pb, Th, and U) in the thyroid tissues with diagnosed colloid goiter (CG). Different variables were investigated (sex, age, smoking habits, goiter size, and previous history of any thyroid disease). The study was designed to compare the goiter tissues (GTs) to sex- and age-matched healthy- and malignant-thyroid tissues (HTTs and MTTs, respectively). All trace metals were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The reduced content of essential elements (Mn and Se) and increased content of toxic metals (Pb, Th, and U) were found in GTs compared with HTTs. The increased content of the same toxic metals separated GTs from MTTs, as well as reduced content of Mn and Cd. Our results indicated that Pb acts as the main goitrogen, which could highlight its role in the unknown etiology of CG disease. Pb/Se ratio could be considered as a relevant parameter for the tissue separation of GTs from HTTs and/or MTTs. The present research aimed to find trace metals that could contribute to the pathogenesis of MBTs. Essential trace elements (Mn, Co, Zn, Cu, Se) and relevant toxic metals (Al, Ni, As, Sr, Cd, Ce, Pt, Pb, U) in the serum, cell fraction (CF), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cancerous tissue (CT) samples of MBT patients were analyzed. The results were compared with sex- and age-matched control groups. For the first time, this research showed that elemental profiles of serum, CF, CSF and CT samples in MBT patients were significantly altered compared to the appropriate controls, as well as that higher contents of trace elements (particularly Mn, Se, and Pb) could be involved in the pathogenesis of MBTs. However, the most noticeable change found was the elevated U content, indicating its considerable role as a major cerebral discriminator of the presence/absence of MBTs. The U/Se ratio could be considered as an appropriate blood marker in diagnostic MBT evaluation. The reported results could contribute to better understanding of the poorly understood pathogenesis of MBTs. Furthermore, the reported results could highlight a molecular basis for the pathophysiological changes caused by the hazardous effects of trace metals on brain homeostasis.

AB  - Our previous investigation showed significantly increased arsenic (As) content in thyroid tissue samples of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). This research aimed to extend previous findings and provide reliable insight into the close relationship between As and other trace elements with HT by considering a greater number of thyroid tissue samples, accompanied by blood and urine samples. The essential trace elements for thyroid homeostasis (Mn, Cu, Zn, Se) and the main threatening toxic trace elements (Ni, As, Pb, Cd, U) was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Relevant parameters that could affect the concentration of trace elements were considered. This research showed that there was a difference in the elemental profile between HT and control samples. The most important findings were related to the elevated As and Pb content in the thyroid tissue and HT blood samples. The obtained negative correlations between As and Pb with Se may explain the antagonistic effect of As and Pb on the extrusion of essential Se from the HT tissue. The reduced Se content in the blood and its increased content in urine samples may further confirm this hypothesis and explain the lack of Se in HT. Furthermore, the reported results may highlight the unresolved molecular basis of HT and could indicate the role of trace element effects on thyroid homeostasis.

The antioxidative cofactor metals included quantification of Se, Cu, Zn, and Mn concentration. PTC tissues had normal prooxidation levels and increased GPx and GR activity. The activity of SOD has been significantly reduced in multicentric PTC dissemination and increased in smokers. SOD activity was directly dependent on MDA levels in CG tissues. CG patients with retrosternal goiter had reduced MDA concentration and SOD activity. Numerous correlations between redox parameters in PTC tissues reveal good co-activation of antioxidative mechanisms and cooperative response on prooxidation. AB  - Evaluation of trace metals at level of solid tissue can provide better information than blood or urine and, therefore, could highlight the role of metals in the etiology of organ-specific disease. The current study aimed to establish the baseline content of four essential (Mn, Cu, Zn, Se) and four toxic metals (As, Cd, Pb, U) in the healthy thyroid tissues (HTTs) by considering sex, age and smoking habits. A further aim was to examine whether differences in the content of metals exist in regard to the thyroid diseases, such as benign tumor (BT), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), multinodular goiter (MNG) and thyroid cancer (TC). A total number of investigated tissue samples were 423. All metals were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was found that the content of Cu and U was higher in HTTs of women, while the content of Zn was higher in HTTs of men. Increased content of Zn and decreased content of U was found in the group of HTTs above 50 years compared to a younger group (<50 years). Increased content of Cd, Pb and U distinguish smokers from the non-smokers. In comparison with other population groups worldwide, investigated Serbian population had up to 15 times reduced content of Se. Despite the difference in metal's profile according to biological variables, this study also demonstrated, for the first time, that each thyroid disease has its unique metal's profile. The most altered metal's content was found in tissues with HT. Contrarily, the greatest similarity in metal's content with HTTs was found in BT tissues. Based on the increased content, metal's that dominantly discriminated HTTs from the HT, MNG and TC was As, Pb and Cd, respectively. Reported results could highlight the role of toxic and essential trace metals in the not very well clarified etiology of thyroid diseases and, moreover, could provide a molecular basis for pathophysiological changes of metal's hazardous effects on thyroid health at the tissue level.

AB  - Trout farms are one of the major sources of pollution of highland streams and rivers. Since river sediment burdened with organic pollution binds greater amounts of heavy metals we investigated the influence of the trout farm on the accumulation of metals in the sediment, water and Ephemera danica larvae. Research was conducted seasonally (April, July, and October of 2015 and January of 2016) at one control locality (SK1) and three localities downstream from the farm (SK2-SK4). In agreement with the hypothesis the fish farm discharge induced localized and statistically significant increase of concentrations of Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd in sediment and E. danica larvae, but not in water at locality SK2 just below the fish farm indicating that sediment is the main source of heavy metals for this organism. However, according to the values of Biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) only metals with low sediment concentrations (As, Cd and Cu) accumulated in the larvae. Moreover, BASF values for toxic metals (As, Cd and Cr) showed negative correlation with their concentrations in sediment indicating existence of defense mechanisms in E. danica against assimilation of these metals in high concentrations lethal for it. On the other hand, BSAF values for essential microelements (Cu and Fe) were positively correlated with their sediment concentrations. In conclusion the trout farm induced accumulation of heavy metals in river sediment and E. danica larvae proved to be a good bioindicators of the pollution of river systems by As, Cd and Cu.

AB  - Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) from Phanerochaete chrysosporium can be used in lactobionic acid production, biosensor for lactose, biofuel cells, lignocellulose degradation, and wound-healing applications. To make it a better biocatalyst, CDH with higher activity in an immobilized form is desirable. For this purpose, CDH was expressed for the first time on the surface of S. cerevisiae EBY100 cells in an active form as a triple mutant tmCDH (D20N, A64T, V592M) and evolved further for higher activity using resazurin-based fluorescent assay. In order to decrease blank reaction of resazurin with yeast cells and to have linear correlation between enzyme activity on the cell surface and fluorescence signal, the assay was optimized with respect to resazurin concentration (0.1 mM), substrate concentration (10mMlactose and 0.08mMcellobiose), and pH (6.0). Using optimized assay an error prone PCR gene library of tmCDH was screened. Two mutants with 5 (H5) and 7 mutations (H9) were found having two times higher activity than the parent tmCDH enzyme that already had improved activity compared to wild type CDH whose activity could not be detected on the surface of yeast cells.

AB  - Cilj ove studije je klasifikacija biološki različitih vrsta školjki na osnovu sadržaja esencijalnih elemenata primenom hemometrije. Sadržaj esencijalnih elemenata kao što su Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn, i Fe je određen u četiri biološki različite vrste školjki Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam, MC), Yesso scallop (YS), Tegillarca granosa (TG) i Anadara brоughtonii (AB). Analizitani uzorci su kupljeni u Incheonu, Koreja. Sadržaj esenicjalnih elemenata je određen primenom induktivno spregnute plazme kuplovane sa masenom spektrometrijom (ICP-MS) nakon mikrotalasne digestije. Hemometrijske tehnike pokazuju grupisanje ispitivanih uzoraka školjki prema sadržaju esencijalnih elemenata i identifikuju elemente najvažnije za klasifikaciju.
AB  - The main aim of current study was classification of four biologically different sellfish species such as bivalve molluscs Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam, MC), Yesso scallop (YS), Tegillarca granosa (TG) and Anadara broughtonii (AB) bought in the Incheon, South Korea. Content of essencial ellements such as Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn, and Fe were determined by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after closed-vessel microwave digestion. Chemometrics techniques showed classification of sellfish smaples based on biological species and identified elements most important for classification.

Sadržaj As, Cd, Hg i Pb je određen u četiri vrste školjki Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam, MC), Yesso scallop (YS), Tegillarca granosa (TG) i Anadara broughtonii (AB) kupljene u Incheonu, Koreja. Uzorci su analizirani induktivno spregnutom plazmom - masenom spektrometrijom (ICP-MS) nakon mikrotalasne digestije. Izračunati su dnevni/nedeljni unosi za ove elemente u mg/300 g uzorka. Ukupan sadržaj As (neoganski i organski) u svim vrstama je bio veći od dozvoljenog limita preporučenog od Svetske zdravstvene organizacije (WHO). Procenjeni dnevni unosi ostalih elemenata (Hg, Cd i Pb) su niži od maksimalnih podnošljivih granica (MDI) koje je odredila Evropska agencija za bezbednost hrane (EFSA) što ukazuje da nema rizika za konzumente.
AB  - Bivalve molluscs, which include mussels, oysters and clams, have high nutritional value. On the other hand, seafood may also contain harmful contaminants and other undesirable substances such as mercury and persistent halogenated compounds. Four species of bivalve molluscs Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam, MC), Yesso scallop (YS), Tegillarca granosa (TG) and Anadara broughtonii (AB) were bought in Incheon, Korea, in order to determine content of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb and consequently, to estimate the health hazards associated to dietary intake. The samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. All species showed As content higher than the maximum tolerable limit specified by EFSA. Estimated daily intake of Hg, Cd and Pb from consumption of 300 g was very low and hence poses no toxicological risk.

AB  - Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L., Ericaceae) is a rich source of different mineral elements that are important as essential trace elements, or that can be potentially toxic, depending on their concentration. The contents of sixteen elements: the major (Al, Ca, Fe, K and Mg) and trace elements (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn) in roots, stems, leaves and fruits of bilberry and the corresponding soil substrate were determined in order to investigate element mobility and availability in soil. Soil was subjected to sequential extraction procedure as proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference in order to fractionate acid-soluble/exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable and residual fractions. Analysis of water and ethanol extracts of bilberry aerial parts revealed a significant transfer of elements during the extraction procedure, with corresponding extraction coefficient values of up to 95.12%. Results showed that bilberry fruits could serve as a good dietary source of essential elements for humans, especially Mn and Cu.

AB  - Chemical properties of distilled water treated by non-thermal plasma reactor were studied. Hydrogen-peroxide production, pH value and conductivity in distilled water were measured after plasma-treatment in air, argon and argon-oxygen mixture as working gases. Water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor 1 was used for water treatment. Direct contact of water film with plasma in this reactor enables efficient transfer of reactive species generated in plasma to liquid phase. For optimization of reactive species production frequency and amplitude of the applied voltage were varied. 
Chemical characterization of water treated by DBD generated in different gases shows that hydrogen peroxide production in argon reaches yield of 0.78 g/kWh, while in air it was 0.19 g/kWh. Both measurements were made with 35 W of power dissipated in plasma. Moreover, significant influence of gas atmosphere was observed in measurements of pH value and conductivity which imply that production of ions is about 15 times greater in water treated with plasma generated in air than in argon. Advanced oxidation using this type of non-thermal plasma reactor enables production of active species in situ, while working in ambient conditions.1 Effectiveness of plasma treatment was already confirmed with degradation of some waterborne pharmaceuticals.2 This opens opportunities for new studies of plasma oxidation of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments.

AB  - The mobility (fractionation) of rare earth elements (REEs) and their possible impacts on ecosystems are still relatively unknown. Soil samples were collected from two sites in central Serbia, an unpolluted mountain region (site 1) and a forest near a city (site 2). In order to investigate REE fractions (acid-soluble/exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual) in soils, BCR sequential extraction was performed. Additionally, the content of REEs was also determined in stipes and caps of the mushroom Macrolepiota procera, growing in the observed sites. Sc, Y, and lanthanide contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and results were subjected to multivariate data analysis. Application of pattern recognition technique revealed the existence of two distinguished clusters belonging to different geographical sites and determined by greater levels of Sc, Y, and lanthanides in Goč soil compared to Trstenik soil. Additionally, PCA analysis showed that REEs in soil were concentrated in two groups: the first consisted of elements belonging to light REEs and the second contained heavy REEs. These results suggest that the distribution of REEs in soils could indicate the geographical origin and type of soil. The bioconcentration factors and translocation factors for each REE were also calculated. This study provides baseline data on the rare earth element levels in the wild edible mushroom M. procera, growing in Serbia. In terms of bioconcentration and bioexclusion concept, Sc, Y, and REEs were bioexcluded in M. procera for both studied sites.

Additionally, the content of REEs was also determined in stipes and caps of the mushroom Macrolepiota procera, growing in the observed sites. Sc, Y, and lanthanide contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and results were subjected to multivariate data analysis. Application of pattern recognition technique revealed the existence of two distinguished clusters belonging to different geographical sites and determined by greater levels of Sc, Y, and lanthanides in Goč soil compared to Trstenik soil. Additionally, PCA analysis showed that REEs in soil were concentrated in two groups: the first consisted of elements belonging to light REEs and the second contained heavy REEs. These results suggest that the distribution of REEs in soils could indicate the geographical origin and type of soil. The bioconcentration factors and translocation factors for each REE were also calculated. This study provides baseline data on the rare earth element levels in the wild edible mushroom M. procera, growing in Serbia. In terms of bioconcentration and bioexclusion concept, Sc, Y, and REEs were bioexcluded in M. procera for both studied sites.",

AB  - Bivalve molluscs, which include mussels, oysters and clams, have high nutritional value. They are regarded as a good source for proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and minerals [1]. On the other hand, seafood may also contain harmful contaminants and other undesirable substances such as mercury and persistent halogenated compounds, which has resulted in a number of risk-benefit assessments during the last decade [2].
Four species of bivalve molluscs Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam, MC), Yesso scallop (YS), Tegillarca granosa (TG) and Anadara broughtonii (AB) were bought in two fish markets in Incheon, Korea, in order to determine content of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn, and Fe and consequently, to estimate the health hazards associated to dietary intake. The samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after closed-vessel microwave digestion. The analytical accuracy of the method was evaluated by using the SRM (TORT-2, lobster hepatopancreas). Application of principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed a tendency to form three groups between samples belonging to different genus of samples.
European food safety authority (EFSA) has established recommended daily intake (RDI) values for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn of 3, 14, 5 and 10 mg/day, respectively. We calculated the RDI for daily consumption in milligrams per 300 g of sample. Our results showed that these species could serve as a good dietary source of essential elements, especially Fe, Mn and Zn. However, all species showed As content higher than the maximum tolerable limit specified by EFSA. Seafood is the major contributor to As in the diet though As in seafood mostly occurs as organic As species [3]. In addition, content of Mn in Yesso scallop is few times higher than in other species.
