Antioxidant Capacity and Quality of Human Milk and Infant Formula Determined by Direct Current Polarography

AB  - Antioxidants present in infant food contribute to its nutritive value and provide protection from oxidative damage. Here, a direct current polarographic method, based on a decrease of anodic current from the hydroxoperhydroxo-mercury(II) complex (HPMC) formed at a mercury dropping electrode at its potential of dissolution, was used to determine the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of infant formulas, human milk collected from mothers of full-term and preterm infants, human milk supplemented with fortifier, and cow milk. TAC of milk samples and infant formula correlated with protein content measured by the Bradford method (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.605, p<0.001), while TAC of human milk correlated with content of free thiol groups measured by the Ellman method (0.779, p<0.001). The results obtained showed that, in contrast to the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, HPMC enables specific insight into the quality of infant milk food which reflects the amounts of free thiol groups and protein content. The significant contribution of milk proteins and the most prevalent amino acids, particularly cysteine, arginine, and phenylalanine, to TAC was shown. Thus, the HPMC method might be useful in monitoring the quality of infant formulas and human milk for preterm infants before and after supplementation with fortifier.

Study on the assessment of humification processes during biodegradation of heavy residual fuel oil

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the creation of humic substances during biodegradation of heavy residual fuel oil, because there are indications that substances similar to humic substances are generated during biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In the study, which lasted for 110 days, biodegradation of heavy residual fuel oil was carried out in a layer of artificial soil substrate. The initial concentration of the total petroleum hydrocarbon in the prepared artificial soil substrate (biopile) was 23.1 g kg-1 dry weight (d.w.). At the end of the process, the total petroleum hydrocarbons were reduced to 8.1 g kg-1 d.w. in the inoculated biopile, while the content of humic acids increased during bioremediation from 3.15 g kg-1 d.w. to 4.95 g kg-1 d.w. The humic acids extracted from biopile during the biodegradation process were characterized by various chemical techniques (elemental analysis, spectrofluorimetric analysis, electrochemical measurements, and size exclusion chromatography). The results showed that levels of C, H and the H/C ratio decreased as the biodegradation process progressed. This indicated that humic acids aromatization process took place and this was confirmed by the spectrofluorimetric analysis. The increase of oxygen percentage and the O/C ratio in the humic acids after the biodegradation treatment indicated an increase in functional oxygen groups. Additional analyses of humic acids from the inoculated biopile showed that they were transformed during the bioremediation process. They had greater redox and buffering capacities and a larger portion of the fractions had high molecular mass. Also, the humification parameters (the CHAs/CFAs ratio and CHAs/Corg ratio) increased during the biodegradation. This is one of the few studies that describes the generation of humic substances during the biodegradation of oil compounds.

AB  - Morphology of the pygidial glands and chemical compositions of their secretion were analysed in the adults of three selected ground beetle taxa. Secretions of pygidial glands of Cychrus (Cychrus) semigranosus, Patrobus atrorufus and Pterostichus (Platysma) niger were chemically tested. Additionally, pygidial glands of the latter two species were investigated using bright-field microscopy and nonlinear microscopy and morphological features of the glands were described in detail. Both C. (C.) semigranosus and P. atrorufus were studied for the first time in terms of chemical ecology, while the latter species was analysed for the first time in terms of pygidial gland morphology. Altogether, eight compounds were detected in the dichloromethane extracts of the pygidial gland secretions of the three ground beetle taxa analysed. The simplest secretion mixtures were present in C. (C.) semigranosus and P. atrorufus (with two compounds each), while the extract of P. (P.) niger contained five compounds. The presence of 1-tetradecanol in the secretion of P. (P.) niger represents the first finding of this compound from the pygidial gland secretion extracts of ground beetles.

AB  - Prašina i njen sastav su vaţni faktori koji mogu uticati na ljudsko zdravlje i ţivotnu sredinu i zbog toga je prašina jedan od ĉesto analiziranih vrsta uzoraka. U zavisnosti od veliĉine ĉestica prašine ona moţe biti manje ili više opasna. U ovom radu je odreĊivan elementarni sastav tri frakcije prašine (d<63μm, d63-250μm i d250-1000μm). Najmanja frakcija (d<63μm) moţe biti najopasnija po ljudsko zdravlje jer su ĉestice veoma male i zbog svoje veliĉine mogu dopreti duboko u pluća odnosno do alveola, a iz alveola ĉak i dalje u krvotok. Kroz krvotok zagaĊujuća supstanca moţe doći do ostalih organa u kome moţe ispoljiti neţeljeno dejstvo.
Glavni antropogeni izvori koji mogu uticati na povišene koncentracije metala u prašini u oblasti Kostolca i ĉiji je uticaj analiziran ovim eksperimentom su: saobraćaj, termoelektrane (TE Kostolac A i TE Kostolac B), ţelezara Smederevo i pepelište koje se nalazi u blizini podruĉja uzorkovanja.
Instrument WD-XRF (talasno-disperzivni rendgensko-fluorescentni spektrometar) je korišćen za kvalitativnu i kvantitativnu sprektrohemijsku analizu tri frakcije prašine. XRF je nedestruktivna tehnika kojom se mogu odrediti skoro svi elementi periodnog sistema. Pored mogućnosti multielementarne analize prednost XRF-a je širok dinamiĉki opseg i niţa cena pripreme uzorka. Priprema uzorka je jednostavna, a analiza je moguća bez prethodnog razaranja matriksa i bez upotrebe agresivnih reagenasa.
Cilj ovog rada je ispitivanje tri razliĉite frakcije uzoraka prašine na WD-XRF-u kako bi se ustanovilo da li postoji znaĉajna razlika u sastavu ovih uzoraka kao posledica razliĉitih veliĉina ĉestica. Faktori koji su takoĊe uporeĊivani su dva razliĉita meseca uzorkovanja (jul i septembar), kao i udaljenost od prometnijih puteva (glavni i sporedni put).

AB  - Kancer je maligno oboljenje koje je, pored kardiovaskularnih oboljenja, vodeći uzrok smrtnosti u svetu (Khan, Reale, et al. 2019). Mutacija unutar gena TP53, koji kodira protein p53 je najĉešći uzrok nastanka kancera (Mantovani, Collavin et al. 2019).
Protein p53 je tumorski supresor koji se veoma ĉesto naziva i “ĉuvarom genoma” kako bi se naglasila njegova izuzetno važna uloga u spreĉavanju nastanka kancera. Svoju ulogu ostvaruje kroz mnogobrojne procese unutar ćelije kao što su: blokiranje ćelijskog ciklusa, apoptoza, proces popravke DNK molekula i drugo. Gubitak ovih funkcija za posledicu ima nastanak kancerskih ćelija. Najĉešće mutacije dešavaju se u okviru DNK – vezujućeg domena proteina p53 (De Oliveira, Petronilhno et al., 2020). Poslednjih godina se izuĉavaju pristupi u terapiji kancera koji se zasnivaju na stabilizaciji p53 razliĉitim molekulima koji bi mu vratili prvobitnu funkciju i poboljšali stabilnost.
U ovom radu je izolovan i preĉišćen rekombinantni protein p53 iz E. coli i ispitivani su uslovi u kojima je protein stabilan i funkcionalan. Ispitivane su interakcije proteina p53 i benzoil - akrilne kisleline, kao i interakcije p53 i 1-4-(4-hlorofenil)-4-oksobut-2-enoinske kiseline, nazivane hloro – derivatom dalje u radu.

AB  - Fluorescently labeled lectins are useful tools for in vivo and in vitro studies of the structure and function of tissues and various pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. For the evaluation of high-mannose glycans present on various glycoproteins, a three-dimensional (3D) model of the chimera was designed from the crystal structures of recombinant banana lectin (BanLec, Protein Data Bank entry (PDB): 5EXG) and an enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP, PDB 4EUL) by applying molecular modeling and molecular mechanics and expressed in Escherichia coli. BanLec-eGFP, produced as a soluble cytosolic protein of about 42 kDa, revealed &beta;-sheets (41%) as the predominant secondary structures, with the emission peak maximum detected at 509 nm (excitation wavelength 488 nm). More than 65% of the primary structure was confirmed by mass spectrometry. Competitive BanLec-eGFP binding to high mannose glycans of the influenza vaccine (Vaxigrip&reg;) was shown in a fluorescence-linked lectin sorbent assay (FLLSA) with monosaccharides (mannose and glucose) and wild type BanLec and H84T BanLec mutant. BanLec-eGFP exhibited binding to mannose residues on different strains of Salmonella in flow cytometry, with especially pronounced binding to a Salmonella Typhi clinical isolate. BanLec-eGFP can be a useful tool for screening high-mannose glycosylation sites on different microorganisms.

AB  - Actinidin (Act d 1), a highly abundant cysteine protease from kiwifruit, is one of the major contributors to the development of kiwifruit allergy. Many studies have focused on the optimization of Act d 1 purification and its role in the development of food allergies. Testing on cell culture monolayers is a common step in the elucidation of food allergen sensitization. In the case of cysteine proteases, an additional activation step with l-cysteine is required before the testing. Hence, we aimed to evaluate whether l-cysteine already present in commonly used cell culture media would suffice for Act d 1 activation. Successfully activated Act d 1 (98.1% of proteolytic activity, as compared to l-cysteine activated Act d 1) was further tested in two commonly used 2D model systems (Caco-2 and HEK293 cells) to evaluate its role on the mRNA expression of cytokines involved in the innate immunity (IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, TSLP). Furthermore, the contribution of Act d 1 in the promotion of inflammation through regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression was also examined. These results demonstrate that activation of cysteine proteases can be achieved without previous enzyme incubation in l-cysteine -containing solution. Act d 1 incubated in cell culture medium was able to modulate gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines when tested on two model systems of the epithelial barrier. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

AB  - Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is a desensitizing treatment for allergic diseases that corrects the underlined pathological immune response to innocuous protein antigens, called allergens. Recombinant allergens employed in the AIT allowed the production of well-defined formulations that possessed consistent quality but were often less efficient than natural allergen extracts. Combining recombinant allergens with an adjuvant or immunomodulatory agent could improve AIT efficacy. This study aimed to perform structural and functional characterization of newly designed recombinant chimera composed of the Bet v 1, the major birch pollen allergen, and Banana Lectin (BanLec), TLR2, and CD14 binding protein, for the application in AIT. rBet v 1-BanLec chimera was designed in silico and expressed as a soluble fraction in Escherichia coli. Purified rBet v 1-BanLec (33.4 kDa) retained BanLec-associated biological activity of carbohydrate-binding and preserved IgE reactive epitopes of Bet v 1. The chimera revealed secondary structures with predominant β sheets. The immunomodulatory capacity of rBet v 1-BanLec tested on macrophages showed changes in myeloperoxidase activity, reduced NO production, and significant alterations in the production of cytokines when compared to both rBanLec and rBet v 1. Comparing to rBet v 1, rBet v 1-BanLec was demonstrated to be more efficient promoter of IL-10 production as well as weaker inducer of NO production and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα, and IL-6. The ability of rBet v 1-BanLec to promote IL-10 in together with the preserved 3D structure of Bet v 1 part implies that the construct might exert a beneficial effect in the allergen-specific immunotherapy.

AB  - Karvedilol je neselektivan beta-blokator, koji blokira β1 i β2-receptore. Rezultati doking studije pokazuju da se oba stereoizomera R- i S-) imaju slične afinitete za vezivanje za β1- i β2-receptore. R-izomer vezuje za IB transportno mesto HSA, dok se S-izomer vezuje samo za IIA transportno mesto HSA.
Nebivolol je selektivan beta-blokator, sa značajno večim afinitetom za β1-receptor. Doking studija na β1- i β2-receptorima pokazuju da oba izomera (d- i l-) imaju slične afiniteta vezivanja za oba receptora, ukazujući da selektivnost nije posledica različitog afinitea prema receptorima, nego je posledica procesa koji prethodi njihovom vezivanju. Doking studija na transportnom proteinu HSA pokazala je da oba izomera se vezuju za transporto mesto, koje se nalazi u IB subdomenu HSA. Na osnovu doking studije na HSA za oba beta-blokatora, moguće je zaključiti da vezivanje beta-blokatora za transporto mesto u IB subdomenu pogoduje vezivanju za β1-receptor, dok vezivanje za transporto mesto u IIA subdomenu pogoduje vezivanju za β2-receptor.
Metoprolol, nezavisno od toga da li je R ili S konfiguracije, ima veći afinitet za vezivanje na IIA transportno mesto. Tek sa povećanjem koncentracije leka, počinje da se vezuje za IB transportno mesto, i to S oblik. Ovo je u skladu sa rečenicom iz uvoda „Selektivnost metoprolola je zavisna od doze leka i može biti smanjena primenom više doze leka.“. Kako je metoprolol selektivan, i blokira samo β1-receptor, pretpostavljamo da vezivanje leka za IIA transportno mesto vodi selektivnosti.

AB  - Метаболизам  сумпора (пут асимилације  сумпора, SAP) један је од кључних путева  за  патогенезу  и  преживљавање  Mycobacterium  tuberculosis  (Mtb)  у  латентном  периоду.  Аденозин  5'-фосфосфат  редуктаза  (APSR)  је  значајан  ензим  који  је  укључен  у  SAP,  не  налази се у људском организму и може бити валиднo циљно место за развој нових анти- туберкулотика.  Циљ  овог  рада  је  развој  3D-QSAR  модела  који  се  заснива  на  кристалној  структури APSR из Pseudomonas aeruginosa, који има висок степен хомологије са APSR из  Mtb, у комплексу са супстратом, аденозин 5'-фосфoсулфатом (APS). 3D-QSAR модел је  постављен коришћењем сета 16 нуклеотидних аналога APS применом дескриптора неза- висних од полазних тачака, изведених из поља молекуларних интеракција (MIF). Модел  служи  за  боље  разумевање  кључних  карактеристика  молекула  неопходних  за  интерак- цију са циљним местом, у сврху рационалног дизајнирања малих молекула, инхибитора  APSR из Mtb.

AB  - Bakar je esencijalni element za čoveka i potrebno je omogućiti njegovu tačnu, preciznu i brzu
detekciju u organizmu i njegovoj okolini. Upotrebom elektrohemijskih metoda može se smanjiti
vreme potrebno za analizu, jer se mogu isključiti komplikovane procedure obrade uzoraka.
Selektivnost u elektrohemiji postiže se upotrebom modifikovanih elektroda u voltametriji. Naš cilj
bio je modifikacija elektrode od staklastog ugljenika Šifovom bazom i njenim kompleskom sa
Cu(II), koja bi bila osetljiva i selektivna prema bakarnim jonima. Kao modifikatori odabrani su
baza H2(acac2en) i kompleks Cu(acac2en), koji su nanošeni na radnu površinu metodom
nakapavanja, elektrodepozicije i uz pomoć rastvora 1% Nafiona. Snimani su ciklični
voltamogrami i jedino je metoda nakapavanja sa kompleksom dala zadovoljavajući rezultat, kao i
linearnu zavisnost intenziteta struje za koncentracioni opseg bakra od 0,2mM do 1,28mM.
Analizom realnih uzoraka, vode iz Ade Ciganlije i česmovače, zaključeno je da metoda
nakapavanja nije pouzdana i ponovljiva metoda, jer postoji velika varijacija rezultata za isti
uzorak.

AB  - In vivo measurements of the optical properties of plant leaves, by spectrophotometric methods, could potentially provide very useful information for the assessment of the plant’s health. This paper describes a novel experimental set-up that enables continuous measurements of the optical reflection and transmission coefficients of broad-leaved plants. The optical spectral characteristics of leaves, in the broad wavelength range, are often a discussed topic in the scientific literature. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, the real-time spectral analyses of the leaf haven’t been reported so far. Monitoring the evolution of the plant activity in real-time has resulted in the graph of the spectral Circadian rhythm as a function of time. The set-up was tested on Phaseolus vulgaris and the results of the measurements are presented and discussed.

AB  - Most investigations conducted in the last four decades have shown a rising incidence of thyroid diseases worldwide. Although our knowledge of the molecular pathways of thyroid disease has advanced, the initial steps in thyroid cancerogenesis have not yet been sufficiently elucidated. However, recent human biomonitoring studies have shown that specific trace metals, as major endocrine disrupters, could be considered as risk factors for impaired thyroid health and the evolution of thyroid cancer (TC). In this review, the impact of essential and toxic trace metals from the environment on thyroid health and TC was evaluated. Furthermore, this review clarifies which trace metals most likely contribute to the etiology of TC. Biomarkers based on trace metal ratios are proposed. Overall, the information described in this review is expected to be useful in planning future fundamental and applied studies on the endocrine toxicity of essential and toxic trace metals. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

AB  - Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced by many plants as a defense mechanism against stress-inducing conditions. The richest dietary sources of resveratrol are berries and grapes, their juices and wines. Good bioavailability of resveratrol is not reflected in its high biological activity in vivo because of resveratrol isomerization and its poor solubility in aqueous solutions. Proteins, cyclodextrins and nanomaterials have been explored as innovative delivery vehicles for resveratrol to overcome this limitation. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated beneficial effects of resveratrol in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Main beneficial effects of resveratrol intake are cardioprotective, anti-hypertensive, vasodilatory, anti-diabetic, and improvement of lipid status. As resveratrol can alleviate the numerous factors associated with CVD, it has potential as a functional supplement to reduce COVID-19 illness severity in patients displaying poor prognosis due to cardio-vascular complications. Resveratrol was shown to mitigate the major pathways involved in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 including regulation of the renin-angiotensin system and expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, stimulation of immune system and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Therefore, several studies already have anticipated potential implementation of resveratrol in COVID-19 treatment. Regular intake of a resveratrol rich diet, or resveratrol-based complementary medicaments, may contribute to a healthier cardio-vascular system, prevention and control of CVD, including COVID-19 disease related complications of CVD.

AB  - Current approaches based on electrophoretic, chromatographic or immunochemical principles have allowed characterizing multiple allergens, mapping their epitopes, studying their mechanisms of action, developing detection and diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies for the food and pharmaceutical industry. However, some of the common structural features related to the allergenic potential of food proteins remain unknown, or the pathological mechanism of food allergy is not yet fully understood. In addition, it is also necessary to evaluate new allergens from novel protein sources that may pose a new risk for consumers. Technological development has allowed the expansion of advanced technologies for which their whole potential has not been entirely exploited and could provide novel contributions to still unexplored molecular traits underlying both the structure of food allergens and the mechanisms through which they sensitize or elicit adverse responses in human subjects, as well as improving analytical techniques for their detection. This review presents cutting-edge instrumental techniques recently applied when studying structural and functional aspects of proteins, mechanism of action and interaction between biomolecules. We also exemplify their role in the food allergy research and discuss their new possible applications in several areas of the food allergy field.

AB  - In this manuscript, samples of Kupa River sediments were examined using three different extraction agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of single extraction procedures to investigate the bioavailability and mobility of major and trace elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Si, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn) from river sediment. Two forms of studied elements were evaluated: mobile, the most toxic element form (extraction with 1 M CH3COONH4 and 0.01 M CaCl2) and potentially mobilized form (2 M HNO3 extraction). The estimation of the ecological risk, with the application of the probability distribution of RI (potential ecological risk index) values, is yielded with the help of the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Ammonium acetate is proved to be a better extraction agent than calcium chloride. A positive correlation between the content of all extracted elements with nitric acid and the total element content indicates that 2 M HNO3 efficiently extracts all studied elements. Results showed anthropogenic sources of cadmium and copper and high barium mobility. The MCS suggests that risk of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn was low; As and Cd posed a lower and median ecological risk in the studied areas.

AB  - BACKGROUND Movement of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in stored products is mediated by food volatiles and other semiochemicals. RESULTS In two-way olfactometer assays, T. castaneum was more attracted to wheat bran previously infested with conspecifics than to uninfested bran. Chemical analysis showed that 1-pentadecene was present in the headspace of T. castaneum-infested wheat bran, but not detectable in the headspace of uninfested bran. An olfactometer was used to test the effect on T. castaneum behaviour of 1-pentadecene, and of volatiles from wheat bran with and without 1-pentadecene. The lowest concentration of 1-pentadecene exhibited an attractive effect, compared to the control (n-hexane). Slightly higher concentrations showed a neutral effect, while the highest concentrations repelled T. castaneum. Wheat bran with a low 1-pentadecene concentration was more attractive than wheat bran alone, whereas higher concentrations of 1-pentadecene were repellent. CONCLUSION The results provide important information on intraspecific, semiochemical-mediated behaviour in T. castaneum, which could potentially be used to develop new methods to monitor the flour beetles in stored products.

The data show a larger influence of crystal packing/surrounding, more than the influence of substituents, on geometries of aromatic/aromatic interactions. While the interactions in crystal structures from the CSD show preference for parallel stacking interactions at the large offsets, in proteins from the PDB, they show preference for T-shaped geometries with small offsets.

AB  - The elemental composition of control and pathological adrenal tissues remains to be resolved. This study aimed to provide an initial insight into the amounts of micro- (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Pb, U) and macroelements (Na, K, Mg, Ca) in healthy adrenal tissue (HAT) and adenomatous adrenal tissue (AAT) samples collected from patients with adrenal adenoma (AA) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results were accompanied by a comparative determination of the same elements in healthy blood (HB) and adenomatous blood (AB) samples. This is the first study that has provided in-depth knowledge of the baseline composition of the clinically important elements of HAT samples. Furthermore, this study showed elementary changes in AA patients. The AATs had significantly higher amounts of Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, Pb, K, and Mg compared to the HATs. The opposite results were obtained for the same elements in the AB samples, indicating that the benign adrenal masses could have the ability to withdraw these elements from circulation. These results were supplemented by principal component analysis (PCA). ICP-based techniques were successfully applied to accurately provide a more comprehensive insight into the clinically important elements in the solid tissue and blood samples. The results of this study are a deep-dive into the likely future of clinical studies. Moreover, target elements should be taken into consideration as novel initiating and/or modifying factors of AA, after further research, this would include the analysis of a larger number of samples and prospective follow-up of the patient’s elemental profile.

AB  - The catalyst composed of a mixture of nanocrystals of metallic Pt and rutile RuO2 was prepared by a thermal procedure on a titanium substrate. An effect of the mixture composition on its microstructure, surface properties, and catalytic activity for an electrooxidation of 1-propanol in an alkaline environment was examined. The relation between the microstructure of the Pt/RuO2 catalyst and its catalytic activity was determined. It was found that the increase in the RuO2 content resulted in the increase in the catalytic activity, which reached its maximum value and then decreased. The catalytic effect was caused by the bifunctional mechanism of the catalyst Pt/RuO2. Ru-OH species were formed on Ru atoms of RuO2 nanocrystals at more negative potentials than on Pt. These oxy species oxidized firmly adsorbed intermediates propionyl, COad, C2Hyad, and CHad and, thus, released Pt atoms for the adsorption and dehydrogenation of the subsequent molecules of 1-propanol.

AB  - Pure hematite nanorods and very long and thin cobalt-doped hematite nanorods (nanoneedles) were prepared by a combined precipitation and annealing method. The influence of the level of cobalt doping on different properties of hematite nanorods was investigated. Incorporation of cobalt in the form of low-spin Co3+ ions into the structure of hematite by substitution for high-spin Fe3+ ions was proved by determination of a significant unit cell contraction by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and characteristic positions of the absorption edge in X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra and peaks in X-ray emission (XES) spectra. Cobalt doping caused a gradual elongation and thinning of hematite nanorods – very long and thin 1D nanoparticles (nanoneedles) were formed in the presence of 10 and 12 mol% Co. Magnetic measurements showed a strong increase in low-temperature remanent magnetization and coercivity upon cobalt doping, as well as a disappearance of the Morin transition, which was also confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Cobalt doping significantly affected optical properties of hematite nanorods – absorption in the visible and NIR ranges increased, which was accompanied by narrowing of the optical band gap. Compared with pure hematite nanorods cobalt-doped hematite nanoneedles showed a significantly better electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
