AB  - Lipophilicity and ionization constant of sixteen fentanyl analogues were investigated by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP-TLC). Fourteen compounds have nitrogen containing groups at C-3 position of thepiperidine ring and two compounds are 3-carbomethoxy derivatives of fentanyl. Among them, five are diaste-reomeric cis/trans couples and six novel trans diastereomers. In addition, the lipophilicity and ionization constantof fentanyl were also determined by the same method, as a reference. The physicochemical property, lip-ophilicity, expressed as retention indices RM0 , b, and C0, as well as PC1, was determined and correlated with insilico values. Ionization constants were determined on the basis of the relationships between analyte’s retentionexpressed as RF and mobile phase pH. Calculated structural descriptors together with the retention indices, weresubjected to the principal component analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA, in order to providebasic insights into the similarities among the studied compounds. The blood – brain barrier (BBB) permeationwas investigated in the function of experimentally obtained values of lipophilicity, polar surface area and mo-lecular weight. In general, results of the present research corroborate well with previously determined anti-nociceptive activities of the investigated compounds, pointing out that besides the cis/trans isomerism, anotherset of important parameters should be taken into account when designing new derivatives of C-3 substitutedfentanyl, especially lipophilicity, voluminosity and HBD/A character of the substituents. Accordingly, RP-TLCcan be considered as a valuable asset in the ligand-based drug design

AB  - Considering the health-benefits of berry fruits consumption and increased market demands for food authenticityas one of the most important quality assurances, phenolic profiling by high-performance thin layer chroma-tography and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry was combinedwith multivariate analysis for phytochemical characterization and intercultivar discrimination of cultivatedberry seeds. The phenolic profiles of 45 berry seeds from nine genuine Serbian cultivated fruit species (straw-berry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, cape gooseberry, chokeberry, and goji berry)revealed a good differentiation according to botanical origin. In order to determine biomarkers responsible forthe classification, a total of 103 phenolic compounds were identified, including 53 phenolic acids and theirderivatives, 26 flavonoids and 24 glycosides. Biomarkers derived from the phenolic profile of berry seeds provedto be a powerful tool in the authentication of botanical origin, and may be useful in detection of frauds in berry-based seed-containing product.

AB  - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy.

AB  - An electrochemical approach is presented based on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and neodymium(III) hydroxide (Nd(OH)3) nanoflakes for detection of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The materials were characterized morphologically (XRPD, SEM, and HR-TEM) and electrochemically (DPV, EIS). The MWCNTs@Nd(OH)3 composite was used as support for bovine serum albumin polyclonal antibody (anti-BSA). After the antibody immobilization on the electrochemical platform and antigen/antibody binding time (optimum 60 min), the proposed approach shows a linear voltammetric response toward BSA concentration in the range 0.066 to 6.010 ng mL−1 at maximum peak potential of 0.13 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 18 pg mL−1 and 61 pg mL−1, respectively. The precision of the method calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD) of five independent measurements was better 3%. The selectivity of the optimized method regarding structurally similar proteins (human serum albumin and human hemoglobin), ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and NO2−), or compounds (glucose, ascorbic acid, dopamine, uric acid, paracetamol, and glycine) was found to be satisfactory, with the current changes of less than 5% in the presence of up to 1 × 105 times higher concentrations (depending on the compound) of the listed potential interfering compounds. Practical applicability of immunosensor for BSA determination in cow whey sample, with recovery values in the range 97 to 103%, shows that the developed method has high potential for precise and accurate detection of BSA, as well as exceptional miniaturization possibilities for on-site and equipment-free sensing.

AB  - Sexual dysfunction, as a noticeable adverse effect of atypical antipsychotic drugs (APDs) for the treatment of schizophrenia, has not been investigated in detail. A study was undertaken to investigate whether 28-day long treatment with clozapine, ziprasidone or sertindole (using a recommended daily dose for atypical antipsychotic therapy), induced histopathological changes both in rat testicles and prostate, changed the activity of the antioxidant defence system and altered blood testosterone and prolactin. Clozapine, ziprasidone and sertindole induced histopathological changes in rat testicular tissue, which could be attributed to a disturbed testicular antioxidant defence system in addition to an altered prolactin to testosterone ratio. None of the APD treatments induced histopathological changes in prostate. Our results demonstrate that APDs have the capacity to change both redox and endocrinological balance. One or both outcomes could underline testicular degeneration and disturbed spermatogenesis.

AB  - Chitosan (Ch)-derived from biowaste along with smectite, an abundant clay mineral, were used in a low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of a new type of catalyst. Nanocomposite catalysts constituted of Co supported on smectite with chitosan-derived carbon loading were obtained using an impregnation‑carbonization procedure and denoted as Co/cCh-S-T (T stands for applied carbonization temperature). The carbonization was performed in the temperature range from 400 °C to 700 °C in the flow of N2 providing inert atmosphere. The temperature of 500 °C was found to be the most suitable for catalyst synthesis regarding catalytic performance in a peroxymonosulfate activated degradation of tartrazine. The incorporation of carbonized chitosan structure within the interlamellar space of the smectite was confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed a layered structure of nanocomposites characteristic for smectite, as well as the presence of small spherical cobalt containing nanoformations (confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) well dispersed within structure. The existance of cobalt in the CoII and CoIII oxidation state was proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Co/cCh-S-500 catalyst was proven to be stable and efficient after 5 consecutive cycles. This work showed that nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators exhibited a very promising performance in the degradation of water pollutants.

AB  - Chitosan (Ch)-derived from biowaste along with smectite, an abundant clay mineral, were used in a low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of a new type of catalyst. Nanocomposite catalysts constituted of Co supported on smectite with chitosan-derived carbon loading were obtained using an impregnation‑carbonization procedure and denoted as Co/cCh-S-T (T stands for applied carbonization temperature). The carbonization was performed in the temperature range from 400 °C to 700 °C in the flow of N2 providing inert atmosphere. The temperature of 500 °C was found to be the most suitable for catalyst synthesis regarding catalytic performance in a peroxymonosulfate activated degradation of tartrazine. The incorporation of carbonized chitosan structure within the interlamellar space of the smectite was confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed a layered structure of nanocomposites characteristic for smectite, as well as the presence of small spherical cobalt containing nanoformations (confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) well dispersed within structure. The existance of cobalt in the CoII and CoIII oxidation state was proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Co/cCh-S-500 catalyst was proven to be stable and efficient after 5 consecutive cycles. This work showed that nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators exhibited a very promising performance in the degradation of water pollutants.

AB  - The high content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and proteins makes red algae Porphyra sp. (Nori) superfood with exceptional health-promoting benefits. Its intense colour originates from R-phycoerythrin (R-PE), phycobiliprotein containing covalently attached tetrapyrrole chromophores: red phycoerythrobilin and orange phycourobilin. The present study aims to characterize the stability of R-PE, a natural colourant with a high potential for application in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. We purified R-PE from dried Nori flakes with a high purity ratio (A560 /A280 ≥5). Far-UV CD spectroscopic showed that α-helix is the dominant secondary structure (75%). The thermal unfolding of α-helix revealed two transitions (Tm1 and Tm2 at 56 and 72°C, respectively), ascribed to the different subunits of R-PE. Absorption measurements showed that high pressure (HP) induces dissociation of R-PE into subunits followed by subunit unfolding. Contrary to temperature, HP treatment showed a significant advantage under applied conditions: the protein unfolding is partly reversible, and the R-PE colour bleaching is minimized. Based on the fluorescence quenching approach, R-PE's binding affinities for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions were 6.27x105 and 1.71x103 M-1, respectively. Absorption and near-UV/VIS CD spectroscopy suggested conformational changes in protein chromophores upon metal ions binding. Far-UV CD spectroscopy did not reveal that metal binding affects R-PE structure. The obtained results give new insights into the stability of R-PE with a good use-value in replacement of toxic synthetic dyes, preservation of R-PE red colour in fortified food and beverages by HP processing, and as a biosensor for Cu2+ in aquatic life systems.

AB  - The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L., Ericaceae family) is an evergreen Mediterranean
shrub whose leaves and fruits are used in traditional medicine due to their antioxidant, antimicrobial,
antidiabetic, diuretic, and antiproliferative properties. The health benefits are mainly attributed to the
presence of phenolic compounds. The aim of this study was to compare the phenolic profiles, total
phenolic content (TPC), and radical scavenging activity (RSA) of A. unedo leaves and fruits collected
at two locations in Croatia. Phenolic profiles were identified using an ultra-high-performance liquid
chromatograph (UHPLC) coupled with a hybrid mass spectrometer (LTQ Orbitrap MS). TPC was
determined by Folin–Ciocalteu’s assay, while RSA was investigated using DPPH reagent. A total of
64 phenolics (60 and 42 compounds in leaves and fruits, respectively) were identified. Hyperoside
and flavan-3-ols were predominant compounds in leaves, while gallocatechin and catechin were
the major compounds found in fruits. To the authors’ knowledge, 16 and 5 phenolics in leaves and
fruits, respectively, were reported for the first time. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed
that UHPLC-LTQ Orbitrap MS could be used to identify which phenolics were able to discriminate
samples regarding plant tissue and geographical origin. TPC in leaves and fruits were in the ranges of
67.07–104.74 and 16.78–25.86 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dried weight (dw), respectively. RSA
for leaves and fruits were in the ranges of 408.92–430.98 and 74.30–104.04 µmol Trolox equivalents
(TE)/g dw, respectively. The number of identified phenolics was lower in fruits compared to leaves.
Such a large number of bioactive phenolics identified and the strong antioxidant activity pointed to
A. unedo as a promising health-promoting plant and natural food preservative.

AB  - Winter savory (Satureja montana L.) is a well-known spice and medicinal plant with a wide range of activities and applications. Two subspecies of S. montana, subsp. montana and subsp. variegata, were used for the preparation of seven different extracts: steam distillation (essential oil (EO) and hydrolate (HY)), subcritical water (SWE), ultrasound-assisted (UAE-MeOH and UAE-H2O), and microwave-assisted (MAE-MeOH and MAE-H2O) extraction. The obtained EOs, HYs, and extracts were used for an in vitro evaluation of the antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, and superoxide anion methods) and in vitro antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial screening was conducted using disk-diffusion assessment, minimal inhibitory concentration, time–kill kinetics modeling, and pharmacodynamic study of the biocide effect. The total phenolic content (TPC) was highest in EO, followed by SWE, MAE, and UAE, and the lowest was in HY. The highest antimicrobial activity shows EO and SWE for both varieties, while different UAE and MAE extracts have not exhibited antimicrobial activity. The natural antimicrobials in the S. montana extract samples obtained by green extraction methods, indicated the possibility of ecologically and economically better solutions for future in vivo application of the selected plant subspecies.

AB  - To replace common organic solvents that present inherent toxicity and have high volatility and to improve the extraction efficiency, a range of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were evaluated for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Agrimonia eupatoria. Screening of NADES efficiency was carried out based on the total phenolic and flavonoid content and radical-scavenging activity, determined by spectrophotometry, as well as phenolic compounds quantified, obtained using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector and a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Increased extraction efficiency when compared with organic solvent was achieved using NADES mixtures choline chloride (ChCl):urea 1:2 and choline chloride:glycerol 1:1. Flavonol glycosides were the most abundant compounds in all extracts. The COSMO-RS model provided insights into the most important intermolecular interactions that drive the extraction process. Moreover, it could explain the extraction efficiency of flavonol glycosides using ChCl:glycerol NADES. The current article offers experimental evidence and mechanistic insights for the selection of optimal NADES to extract bioactive components from Agrimonia eupatoria. © 2022 by the authors.

AB  - The surface of microorganisms is covered with carbohydrates, which makes them unique, self-sustaining glycan probes. Lectins are able to bind to these probes, and this interaction can be exploited for selecting microorganisms or novel lectins. To examine lectin-microorganism interactions, we have previously developed an enzyme-linked lectin sorbent assay (ELLSA) with whole bacterial cells. To further test the validity of this methodology, here we compare it with flow cytometry. For this purpose, we used biotinylated recombinantly produced lectin from Musa acuminata (BanLec), this lectin’s recombinantly produced chimera with green fluorescent protein (BanLec-eGFP) and a lectin from Ricinus communis (RCA120), both biotinylated and FITC labeled. Parallel testing showed equivalent results for the two methods, in terms of the presence or absence of binding, with signal intensity yielding high Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.8 for BanLec and 0.95 for RCA120. The ELLSA method demonstrated multiple advantages, such as reliability and convenience for high-throughput analysis; it also required less lectin and yielded more consistent results. As such, ELLSA proved to be a useful tool for profiling microbial glycan structures or testing novel lectins.

AB  - Mukopolisaharidoze (MPS), su podgrupa lizozomalnih bolesti. Uzrokovane su nedostatkom specifičnih enzima, što dovodi do nemogućnosti razgradnje glikozaminoglikana (GAG), koji se potom abnormalno akumuliraju u ćelijama i izlučuju urinom. Preliminarna dijagnoza MPS-a se postavlja izvođenjem prvo neenzimskih testova skrininga, Beri test, test kiselog zamućenja, spektrofotometrijsko određivanje koncentracije GAG u urinu i elektroforeza fragmenata GAG. Kada je određen tip MPS, korišćen je enzimski test sa fluorogenim supstratom za merenje specifične aktivnosti enzima u leukocitima kako bi se potvrdila dijagnoza MPS, ali je određena i aktivnost kontrolnog enzima.

AB  - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) je u periodu od 2 godine uzrokovao smrt miliona ljudi. Brza dijagnostika je prvi front borbe protiv ovog virusa. Razvijanje ELISA tehnika za dijagnostifikovanje, praćenje toka bolesti, ali i efikasnosti vakcina, sada već uveliko dostupnih, su od velikog značaja. Ekspresija nukleokapsida - N proteina, jednog od strukturnih proteina SARS-CoV-2, u bakterijskom sistemu je brza, reproducibilna i jeftina u poređenju sa drugim sistemima, a daje odgovarajući protein kompatibilan za ELISA testove. U ovom radu je eksprimiran fragment N proteina jer je pokazano da ceo N protein daje lažno pozitivne rezultate zbog konzerviranog N - terminalnog N domena. N protein je proizveden u E. coli BL21, a zatim je prečišćen i proverena je njegova i reaktivnost u ELISA testu sa serumima pacijenata koji su preležali ovaj virus i razvili antitela na ovaj strukturni protein.

U ovom radu je eksprimiran fragment N proteina jer je pokazano da ceo N protein daje lažno pozitivne rezultate zbog konzerviranog N - terminalnog N domena. N protein je proizveden u E. coli BL21, a zatim je prečišćen i proverena je njegova i reaktivnost u ELISA testu sa serumima pacijenata koji su preležali ovaj virus i razvili antitela na ovaj strukturni protein.",

Vremenom je reč alergija promenila značenje i sada se koristi kao sinonim za reakcije preosetljivosti posredovane imunoglobulinom E (IgE) (1,2).
Danas alergija, ili atopija, podrazumeva stvaranje specifičnih IgE antitela prilikom kontakta sa alergenom, koje je praćeno otpuštanjem medijatora, a potom i pojavom simptoma.
Koncept imunoterapije je uveden 1914. i predstavljao je isto što i danas, a to je poboljšavanje imunog sistema administriranjem malih doza hipoalergenih formi alergena kako bi se potencijalno postigla dezensibilizacija na određeni alergen, a kasnije i tolerancija. Kasnije, 1930. su proizvedeni antihistaminici, lekovi za suzbijanje simptoma alergijskih reakcija. 1948. je uvedeno korišćenje kortikosteroida kod astme i alergijskih reakcija.

AB  - Fenilketonurija (PKU) predstavlja jednu od najčešćih naslednih poremećaja metabolizma aminokiselina. PKU je poremećaj metabolizma fenilalanina koji se prenosi autozomno recesivnim putem. Javlja se kao posledica mutacije enzima jetre fenilalanin hidroksilaze, koja katalizuje hidroksilaciju fenilalanina u tirozin. Nedostatak ovog enzima dovodi do nagomilavanja fenilalanina u organizmu, što za posledicu ima niz neurotoksičnih efekata kao i razvoj mentalne retardacije. Razvojem neonatalnih skrining testova širom sveta su omogućile blagovremeno uspostavljanje dijagnoze i tretmana naslednih metaboličkih bolesti. Metode koje se koriste za neonatalni skrining su Gutrijeva metoda, fluorimetrijski testovi, enzimski testovi, HPLC i masena spektrometrija. Ubrzan razvoj biohemije i biotehnologije dovode do boljeg razumevanja molekularne osnove PKU, kao i potreba za poboljšanjem mogućnosti dijagnoze i razvoja novih efikasnijih metoda za utvrđivanje koncentracije fenilalanina.
U fokusu ovog završnog rada je rekombinantna L-fenilalanin dehidrogenaza (PheDH) bakterijskog porekla. Kako je ovaj enzim obećavajući kandidat za razvoj biosenzora za monitoring fenilketonurije, cilj rada je bio proizvodnja rekombinantnog enzima i optimizacija spektrofotometrijskog eseja radi određivanja koncentracije L-Phe u različitim uzorcima.

AB  - Nakon skoro tri godine od pojave SARS-CoV-2 virusa u kineskom gradu Vuhanu, koji se veoma brzo proširio i na ostatak sveta, izazivajući najgoru pandemiju još od kraja Prvog svetskog rata i tzv. Španske groznice, zahvaljujući biomedicinskim istraživanjima, danas raspolažemo širokim spektrom vakcina protiv COVID-19. Vakcine protiv COVID-19 uključuju tradicionalne - inaktivirane vakcine, kao i vektorske vakcine i mRNA vakcine koje predstavljaju novu generaciju vakcina i platformu za mnoga istraživanja i proizvodnju drugih proizvoda zasnovanih na mRNA tehnologiji. Takođe, raspolažemo i brojnim serološkim testovima, kako za kvalitativnu tako i za semi-kvantitativnu i kvantitativnu analizu. Navedeni testovi u kratkom vremenskom roku daju rezultate koji mogu biti iskorišćeni u dijagnostici, praćenju kontakata i za epidemiološke studije.
Ova studija je rađena u Institutu za virusologiju, vakcine i serume "Torlak", u Odseku za naučno-istraživački rad i ima za cilj da pokaže mogućnost primene antigena SARS-CoV-2 virusa, proizvedenih rekombinantnom tehnologijom, u praćenju SARS-CoV-2 specifičnog imunskog odgovora. U urađenim istraživanjima korišćen je receptor vezujući domen (engl. receptor-binding domain, RBD) spike (S) proteina SARS-CoV-2.
In house ELISA test za praćenje humoralnog imunskog odgovora na RBD SARS-CoV-2 virusa poređen je sa komercijalno dostupnim ELISA test-om za detekciju i kvantifikaciju IgG antitela na SARS-CoV-2. Pored toga, rezultate ova dva serološka testa smo uporedili sa rezultatima dobijenim u testu neutralizacije, koji služi kao zlatni standard za određivanje funkcionalne sposobnosti antitela da neutrališu SARS-CoV-2 virus. Povezivanje neutralizacione aktivnosti sa rezultatom serološkog testa pomaže u boljoj karakterizaciji njihove dijagnostičke vrednosti, a to može biti iskorišćeno u cilju postavljanja dijagnoze, potvrđivanja zaštite od infekcije, sprovođenja epidemioloških istraživanja i slično.
Pored analiziranja koncentracije anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antitela, koja su deo humoralnog imunog odgovora, deo studije se bavio i ćelijskim imunitetom - stimulacijom T ćelija strukturnim antigenima SARS-CoV-2 virusa.

AB  - This paper aims to develop an amperometric, non-enzymatic sensor for detecting and quantifying UA as an alert signal induced by allergens with protease activity in human cell lines (HEK293 and HeLa). Uric acid (UA) has been classified as a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule that serves a physiological purpose inside the cell, while outside the cell it can be an indicator of cell damage. Cell damage or stress can be caused by different health problems or by environmental irritants, such as allergens. We can act and prevent the events that generate stress by determining the extent to which cells are under stress. Amperometric calibration measurements were performed with a carbon paste electrode modified with La(OH)3@MWCNT, at the potential of 0.3 V. The calibration curve was constructed in a linear operating range from 0.67 μM to 121 μM UA. The proposed sensor displayed good reproducibility with an RSD of 3.65% calculated for five subsequent measurements, and a low detection limit of 64.28 nM, determined using the 3 S/m method. Interference studies and the real sample analysis of allergen-treated cell lines proved that the proposed sensing platform possesses excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, and stability. Therefore, it can potentially be used to evaluate stress factors in medical research and clinical practice.

Uric acid (UA) has been classified as a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule that serves a physiological purpose inside the cell, while outside the cell it can be an indicator of cell damage. Cell damage or stress can be caused by different health problems or by environmental irritants, such as allergens. We can act and prevent the events that generate stress by determining the extent to which cells are under stress. Amperometric calibration measurements were performed with a carbon paste electrode modified with La(OH)3@MWCNT, at the potential of 0.3 V. The calibration curve was constructed in a linear operating range from 0.67 μM to 121 μM UA. The proposed sensor displayed good reproducibility with an RSD of 3.65% calculated for five subsequent measurements, and a low detection limit of 64.28 nM, determined using the 3 S/m method. Interference studies and the real sample analysis of allergen-treated cell lines proved that the proposed sensing platform possesses excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, and stability. Therefore, it can potentially be used to evaluate stress factors in medical research and clinical practice.",

A six-month study of anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination: A comparative analysis of essential trace elements and anti-RBD IgG sera levels

AB  - Background: Although essential trace elements (ETEs) play pivotal roles in life-supporting biochemical processes, their function in innate and adaptive immunity has not been fully elucidated, particularly during immunization. Furthermore, the association between anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies and ETE levels with vaccine responsiveness has not been investigated. Methods: The present study explored the status of ETEs (Mn, Cu, Zn, and Se) in sera of healthy women before and after vaccination with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a follow-up period of six months. The main aim was to explore links between ETE levels and IgG antibodies produced against Spike glycoprotein's Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD). Results: A recombinant protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprising the receptor binding domain was successfully expressed in HEK-293 T cells. The purified protein was suitable for producing a sensitive antibody detection assay for human serum and monitored seropositivity, indicating a transient response with peak anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels 2 months after vaccination. In parallel to increasing antibody titers, serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Se were not affected by vaccination, and concentrations remained relatively constant at the different sampling times during the 6-month observation period. Total serum Zn concentrations were slightly elevated when compared between the first and last sampling dates. Overall, no consistent effects of vaccination on any of the three trace elements analyzed in our study were observed. Conclusion: Vaccination of adult healthy female volunteers with an mRNA vaccine was not associated with consistent changes in serum trace element concentrations over a six-month observation period.
