Thermo sensitive hydrogels based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (P(NIPAAM)) are widely investigated for targeted drug delivery. Still, the abundance of the stimuli in the human body often requires more than one responsive group able to act simultaneously to achieve optimal therapeutic effects. Due to its pH sensitivity and bio-based production, crotonic acid (CA) was a monomer of choice for preparation of eco-friendly copolymer hydrogels based on NIPAAM and CA (P(NIPAAMcoCA)), which turned to be thermo and pH sensitive at the same time. The potential of the P(NIPAAMcoCA) system for encapsulation and controlled release of drugs with different solubility was investigated engaging water-soluble lidocaine hydrochloride and poorly water-soluble ibuprofen as model drugs. The hydrogels were characterized by various technics: FTIR, DSC, SEM and single compressive tests, while swelling behavior and controlled release of the drugs were analyzed with respect to the CA amount in two environments with different pH values at 25 °C and 37 °C. It was demonstrated that due to their dual responsiveness the P(NIPAAMcoCA) hydrogels have potential for controlled release of drugs with different solubility.

AB  - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of shoot age on the biological and chemical properties of 13 black currant cultivars with different origins and ripening times. Pheno-logical observations together with examined pomological and chemical characteristics were studied in two consecutive years at the experimental field near Belgrade, Serbia. The total content of phenols was estimated spectrophotometrically by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while quantitative analysis of anthocyanin and flavonols aglycones was performed using a high-performance liquid chromato-graphic (HPLC) method. Principal component analysis was performed to establish differences in biological and chemical properties of black currants. Three-year-old shoots had an earlier start of all examined phenological stages, better generative potential, higher yields, while clusters and berries from 2-year-old shoots had significantly higher values for physical properties, total phenols, anthocyanin and flavanols aglycones and antiradical capacity. Late ripening cultivars had higher contents of all chemical compounds. The berries on 2-year-old shoots had total phenolics that ranged between 123.0 (‘Titania’) and 298.3 mg/100 g fresh weight (FW) (‘Ometa’), while total antho-cyanins ranged between 398.5 (’Ojebyn’) and 1160.8 mg/kg FW (’Ometa’). According to the obtained results, cultivars ‘Ometa’, ‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Tsema’ and ‘Malling Juel’ can be recommended as the most promising for growing in the continental climate because they stood out with higher generative potential and yield, physical traits of cluster and berry, higher level of primary and secondary metabolites and DPPH activity in their berries.

AB  - A novel multiferroic composite material, composed of a mixture of nanocrystals of BaT1-xMexO3 and MeFe12O19 (Me = Zn and Mn) and an amorphous phases of BaTi1-xMexO3, MeFe12O19 and MeFe2O4, is synthetized. The composite material consisting of the mixture of nanocrystals of Fe2O3, ZnO and BaTiO3 embedded into the amorphous phase of MnCO3 is obtained by grinding the powder mixture of 17.0 wt% Fe2O3, 4.4 wt% MnCO3, 3.6 wt% ZnO and 75.0 wt% BaTiO3 for 20 min. The powders as-ground for 80 min and more are composed of the mixture of nanocrystals of Fe2O3 and BaTiO3 embedded in the amorphous phase of Fe2O3, ZnO, BaTiO3 and MnCO3. With increasing grinding time, formation of the composite with finer particles, a lower mean size of nanocrystals, higher content of the amorphous phase and higher magnetization is observed. The magnetization of the pressed samples increases with increasing grinding time. Grinding declines the amount of large weakly-ferromagnetic crystals of hematite, however it increases the quantity of paramagnetic small nanocrystals and the amorphous phase. The powder is thermostable up to 280 °C. Annealing above 280 °C results in the decrease in the magnetization of the cooled sample as a consequence of crystallization of the amorphous phase and enlargement of the size of nanocrystals. When sintering for 2 h at 1200 °C, the mixture of nanocrystals of BaTi1-xMexО3 and MeFe12O19 embedded into the amorphous matrix composed of BaTi1-xMexO3, MeFe12O19 and MeFe2О4 is formed. The sintered samples ground for longer periods of time are mainly composed of the amorphous phase and fine nanocrystals. Grinding of powders for less than 100 min results in the sintered samples with a granular structure, whereas the samples obtained from powders ground for more than 160 min are relatively compact. The magnetization of the sintered samples declines with increasing grinding time to 180 min due to transformation of nanocrystals into the amorphous phase. Further increase in grinding time from 180 to 240 min causes the increase in the magnetization, resulting from the effect of sintering. The magnetization of the sintered samples ground for more than 240 min declines with increasing grinding time, since the amount of the amorphous phase rapidly increases when grinding above 240 min. The samples sintered from the powders ground for 240 min show the compact structure and maximum magnetization.

AB  - Biological markers (BMs) are organic compounds in oils in which a precursor is known, and during the transformation of organic matter these compounds undergo certain structural and stereochemical changes. Based on the established precursors of BMs, the origin of the examined oils can be estimated, and based on the intensity and the type of changes and also geological history. It includes defining the deposition medium, the degree of maturation, the length of the oil migration path, the degree of biodegradation. The most studied and applied BMs are normal alkanes, isoprenoid aliphatic alkanes pristane and phytane, and polycyclic alkanes of the sterane and terapane type. On the other hand, in the environmental chemistry, these compounds can significantly contribute to the identification of petroleum pollutants, as well as to the assessment of the migration mechanism and the intensity of biodegradation. This review paper first presents the results related to the application of BMs in the organic geochemical correlations of oil in the south-eastern part of the Pannonian Basin (I). The second part provides an overview of those researches in which the same BMs were used in the identification of oil pollutants and in monitoring their changes during the migration and the biodegradation in rivers and river sediments of Serbia (II).

AB  - Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements, but they are regarded as significant environmental pollutants due to their high density and high toxicity even at low concentrations. The aim of this paper is the evaluation of the pollution level of heavy metals in the river and riverbank sediments, as well as the estimation of their origin and spatial differences along the course of the Vrbas River through Banja Luka. The concentrations of metals have been assessed using the Inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry and Advanced mercury analyzer for mercury determination. The anthropogenic impact on heavy metal concentration in sediments was estimated by the calculating of pollution indices: geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI) and potential ecological risk index (Er). Obtained results indicate that there is no statistically significant spatial difference in metal concentration, indicating that heavy metals in sediments have a constant source. The anthropogenic impact expressed by the values of pollution indices showed that sites are generally uncontaminated by Co, Cr and V and moderately contaminated by Zn, Cu and Ni. On the contrary, lead, mercury and cadmium pose the highest ecological risk. The anthropogenic source of Pb, Hg and Cd is industry, municipal waste and the combustion of fossil fuels. The obtained results demonstrate the high ecological risk and the need for environ-mental monitoring, with the aim to support an efficient strategy to reduce local pollution and contamination of the investigated system.

AB  - Lavandula sp. essential oil and hydrolate are commercially valuable in various industry branches with the potential for wide-ranging applications. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of these products obtained from L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ for the first time cultivated on Fruška Gora Mt. (Serbia) during three successive seasons (2019, 2020, and 2021). Essential oil extraction was obtained by steam distillation, and the composition and influence of weather conditions were also assessed, using flowering tops. The obtained essential oils and hydrolates were analysed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A linear regression model was developed to predict L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil volatile compound content and hydrolate composition during three years, according to temperature and precipitation data, and the appropriate regression coefficients were calculated, while the correlation analysis was employed to analyse the correlations in hydrolate and essential oil compounds. To completely describe the structure of the research data that would present a better insight into the similarities and differences among the diverse L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ samples, the PCA was used. The most dominant in L. intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil and hydrolate were oxygenated monoterpenes: linalool, 1,8-cineole, borneol, linalyl acetate, and terpinene-4-ol. It is established that the temperature was positively correlated with all essential oil and hydrolate compounds. The precipitations were positively correlated with the main compounds (linalool, 1,8-cineole, and borneol), while the other compounds’ content negatively correlated to precipitation. The results indicated that Fruška Gora Mt. has suitable agro-ecological requirements for cultivating Lavandula sp. and providing satisfactory essential oil and hydrolate. © 2022 by the authors. AB  - Two new Schiff base cobalt(III) ([Co(LH)Cl2], 1) and nickel(II) ([Ni(LH)ClO4], 2) complexes with a diimine-dioxime ligand, (4,9-diaza-3,10-diethyl-3,9-dodecadiene-2,11-dione bis oxime (LH2)), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were obtained in MeOH from corresponding metal salts and LH2 in molar ratio 1:1 and further characterized by mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and elemental analysis. Previously reported copper(II) analog, ([Cu2(LH)2]·(ClO4)2, 3) was joined to 1 and 2, and the three metal analogs, 1-3, were further investigated in terms of their electrochemical behavior. The binding studies of the complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and human serum albumin (HSA) were carried out using both spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods. All three complexes exhibit binding affinity towards the DNA chain through intercalative interaction. The binding reaction with HSA showed for 1 and 3 complexes decrease in the peak current obtained in the case of complexes before the addition of HSA, while resulted compound obtained from Ni complex – HSA possesses the same electroactivity as starting complex. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of LH2 as well as its metal complexes, and cisplatin were evaluated on CT-26 mouse colon carcinoma and human LS174T cancer cell lines employing MTT assay. The copper(II) complex exhibited very promising anticancer activity compared with cisplatin.

AB  - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication. The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology, it is concluded that the transition from α to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in the newly formed β phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB  - According to recent research, even low levels of environmental chemicals, particularly heavy metals, can considerably disrupt placental homeostasis. This review aims to explore the profile of non-essential trace metals in placental tissues across the globe and to specify trace metal(s) that can be candidates for impaired placental health. Accordingly, we conducted an extensive survey on relevant databases of peer-reviewed papers published in the last two decades. Among a considerable number of non-essential trace metals, arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) were identified as the most detrimental to placental health. Comparative analysis showed remarkable differences in placental levels of these trace metals worldwide. Based on current data reported across the globe, a median (min–max) range from 0.55 to 15 ng/g for placental As levels could be deemed safe. The placental Cd and Pb levels were markedly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Occupationally exposed pregnant women had several orders of magnitude higher Cd, Pb, and Hg levels in placental tissues than non-occupationally exposed women. Also, we concluded that even low-level exposure to As, Cd, Pb, and Hg could be deleterious to proper fetal development. This review implies the need to reduce exposure to non-essential trace metals to preserve placental health and prevent numerous poor pregnancy outcomes. Overall, the information presented is expected to help plan future fundamental and applied investigations on the placental toxicity of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - Izloženost određenim elementima prepoznata je kao faktor rizika po zdravlje ljudi, a uzrok može biti izlaganje toksičnim elementima kroz ishranu, vazduh, vodu za piće, konzumiranjem cigareta i profesionalnu izloženost. Posebnu pažnju treba posvetiti izloženosti elementima kod trudnica, zbog razvoja fetusa. Ukoliko dođe do prekomernog izlaganja polutantima iz životne sredine, poput elemenata u tragovima, oni mogu uticati štetno na zdravlje i razvoj fetusa.
Placenta predstavlja vezu između majke i fetusa, posreduje u prenosu hranljivih materija i sprečava prodiranje toksičnih elemenata. Novorođenčad zbog nerazvijenog imunskog sistema i razvoj fetalnih organa ima veće apsorpcije u odnosu na odrasle. U okviru ovog istraživanja iz tkiva placenti, ispitani su sadržaji toksičnih elemenata poput arsena, olova, aluminijuma, kadmijuma, nikla i esencijalni elementi koji su od značaja za fetus selen, cink, bakar, mangan i hrom.
Određivanje elemenata u tragovima u kliničkim uzorcima od velike su važnosti za veliki broj kliničkih ispitivanja. Propustljivost placente za esencijalne i neesencijalne elemente u tragovima su nedovoljno proučeni. Poslednjih decenija proučavana je izloženost elementima u tragovima in utero, iako je većina radova razmatrala samo nekoliko metala u tragovima ili nedovoljan broj uzoraka placente. U ovom radu smo imali za cilj da odredimo sadržaj 10 elemenata u tragovima u tkivima placenti. Dalji cilj bio je da se predloži normalni (referentni) opseg za svaki određivani element u tragovima.
Pored toga, imali smo za cilj da uporedimo naše rezultate sa drugim grupama stanovništva širom sveta, da se istakne značaj elemenata na zdravlje placente.Postupak određivanja vrednosti ovih elemenata u tragovima rađen je ICP-MS metodom.

In this study, we aimed to compare levels of various elements in maternal and umbilical cord (UC) plasma samples collected from 125 healthy pregnant women, conduct correlation analysis among paired plasma samples, and compare our data with other populations worldwide. The study design included the following elements: essential (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo), non-essential (Be, Al, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Sb, Pb, U), rare earth (La, Pr, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er), and noble metals (Ru, Rh, Re, Pt). Levels of 30 elements were higher in maternal plasma than in UC plasma samples. However, no disparities at the statistically significant level were found for Be, Zn, Rb, Cd, Ce, and Ho. Correlation analysis among paired plasma samples revealed only positive/synergistic correlations of different strengths between most elements. Compared to other countries across the globe, our participants had considerably lower plasma levels of Zn and higher levels of Co, Ni, and As. This study provides not only a new and deeper comprehension, but also the first insight into the levels, correlation, distribution, and potential transplacental transfer of 30 elements.

Correlation analysis among paired plasma samples revealed only positive/synergistic correlations of different strengths between most elements. Compared to other countries across the globe, our participants had considerably lower plasma levels of Zn and higher levels of Co, Ni, and As. This study provides not only a new and deeper comprehension, but also the first insight into the levels, correlation, distribution, and potential transplacental transfer of 30 elements.",

Takođe, listovi sa sva tri lokaliteta su sušeni na sobnoj temperaturi i procesom liofilizacije. Komparacijom sastava eteričnih ulja sušenih listova sa svežim, ispitivano je koje se komponente gube i u kojoj meri. Da bi se moglo to moglo uporediti, određivana je vlaga svežih listova po Metodi sa prenosom(JUS ISO 939) koja je služila za dalji proračun. Eterična ulja iz svih uzoraka dobijana su metodom hidrodestilacije pomoću Klevendžerove aparature. Nakon ekstrakcije iz biljnog materijala, ulja su analizirana na gasnom hromatografu sa masenim detektorom, tipa kvadrupol. Komponente su identifikovane pomoću ugrađenih spektralnih baza podataka a njihova potvrda vršena je pomoću Kovačevih retencionih indeksa. Analizom dobijenih eteričnih ulja, utvrđen je hemotip biljke lovor sa ovih prostora, kao i njegove razlike u biljkama sa različitih lokaliteta. Grafički i tabelarno dati su podaci o uticaju obe metode sušenja lista biljke na sastav i kvalitet eteričnog ulja dobijenog iz lista. Iz priloženih podataka moglo se zaključiti da sušenje lista ima veliki uticaj na sastav i prinos eteričnog ulja. Metoda sušenja na sobnoj temperaturi pokazala se kao nešto blaža u odnosu na metodu liofilizacije.

AB  - Compounds used in the fashion industry effect the water bodies in the vicinity of textile factories, resulting in the visible coloration of surface water. Fe-doped graphite-based in house prepared electrodes were used in the Fenton--like degradation of Reactive Blue 52 (RB52). The electrodes consisting of high-density graphite in three granulation sizes and three levels of Fe content were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of Fe in the electrodes and H2O2 concentration in syn­thetic textile wastewater were optimized. Additionally, the size of graphite grains was varied to inves­tigate whether it effects the degradation rate. Under only 10 min of electro-Fen­ton degradation, a system with 10 mmol dm-3 of H2O2 and an electrode made of 7 % of Fe and 70 µm of granulation size of graphite, degraded over 75 % of RB52, and over 99 % after 40 min of treatment. The obtained results indicate that the proposed approach could be beneficial in the field of novel materials for environmental applic­ation and that in house prepared carbon could be an excellent replacement for commercially available supports.

тилних фабрика, што резултира видљивим обојењем површинских вода. Домаће елек-
троде на бази графита допиране гвожђем биле су укључене у деградацију Reactive Blue
52 (RB52) механизма попут Фентонове реакције. Електроде су се састојале од графита
велике густине у три величине гранулације и три количине Fе и окарактерисане су
помоћу скенирајуће електронске микроскопије (SEM). Оптимизоване су количина Fe у
електродама и концентрација H2O2 у синтетичкој текстилној отпадној води. Додатно,
величина графитних зрна је варирана како би се испитало да ли утиче на брзину раз-
градње. За само 10 min електро-Фентонове деградације систем са 10 mmol dm-3 H2O2 и
електродом од 7 % Fе и 70 μm величине гранулације графита разградило се преко 75 %
RB52 и преко 99 % након 40 min третмана. Добијени резултати указују на то да пред-
ложени приступ може бити користан у области нових материјала за примену у животној
средини и да домаће припремљени угљеник може бити одлична замена за комерцијално

Novel polyurethane network/organoclay nanocomposites: Microstructure and physicochemical properties

AB  - A series of novel polyurethane network/organoclay nanocomposites (PUN-NCs) with different soft segment contents (30–60 wt%) was prepared by in situ polymerization in solution and characterized. PU network (PUN) was made from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based macrodiol as the soft segment and 4,4′-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate and hyperbranched polyester of the third pseudo generation as the hard segment. Nanocomposites were obtained by dispersion of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) nanofiller (0.5 wt%). The influence of the soft segment content on the functional properties of PUN-NCs was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), small-angle and near wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analyses (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling behavior, water absorption and contact angle measurements. The biodegradation process was evaluated using mixed cultures of microorganisms that originated from soil. Mechanically strong PUN-NC materials in the form of films were obtained, pointing to good dispersion and the existence of exfoliated morphology of Cloisite 30B within the PUN matrix, and the nanocomposites with the abovementioned characteristics were obtained as a function of the soft segment content. The decrease of the soft segment content induced a higher degree of phase separated microstructure, increase of Young's modulus, hardness, plasticity, storage modulus, glass transition temperature, surface free energy and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran, but at the same time, it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density and hydrophobicity of PUN-NCs. By choosing adequate soft segment content, the prepared materials can potentially be designed for coating applications, such as top coating materials in environmental conditions.

abstract = "A series of novel polyurethane network/organoclay nanocomposites (PUN-NCs) with different soft segment contents (30–60 wt%) was prepared by in situ polymerization in solution and characterized. PU network (PUN) was made from poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based macrodiol as the soft segment and 4,4′-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate and hyperbranched polyester of the third pseudo generation as the hard segment. Nanocomposites were obtained by dispersion of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) nanofiller (0.5 wt%). The influence of the soft segment content on the functional properties of PUN-NCs was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), small-angle and near wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analyses (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling behavior, water absorption and contact angle measurements. The biodegradation process was evaluated using mixed cultures of microorganisms that originated from soil. Mechanically strong PUN-NC materials in the form of films were obtained, pointing to good dispersion and the existence of exfoliated morphology of Cloisite 30B within the PUN matrix, and the nanocomposites with the abovementioned characteristics were obtained as a function of the soft segment content. The decrease of the soft segment content induced a higher degree of phase separated microstructure, increase of Young's modulus, hardness, plasticity, storage modulus, glass transition temperature, surface free energy and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran, but at the same time, it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density and hydrophobicity of PUN-NCs. By choosing adequate soft segment content, the prepared materials can potentially be designed for coating applications, such as top coating materials in environmental conditions.",
