AB  - Lipophilicity and ionization constant of sixteen fentanyl analogues were investigated by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP-TLC). Fourteen compounds have nitrogen containing groups at C-3 position of thepiperidine ring and two compounds are 3-carbomethoxy derivatives of fentanyl. Among them, five are diaste-reomeric cis/trans couples and six novel trans diastereomers. In addition, the lipophilicity and ionization constantof fentanyl were also determined by the same method, as a reference. The physicochemical property, lip-ophilicity, expressed as retention indices RM0 , b, and C0, as well as PC1, was determined and correlated with insilico values. Ionization constants were determined on the basis of the relationships between analyte’s retentionexpressed as RF and mobile phase pH. Calculated structural descriptors together with the retention indices, weresubjected to the principal component analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA, in order to providebasic insights into the similarities among the studied compounds. The blood – brain barrier (BBB) permeationwas investigated in the function of experimentally obtained values of lipophilicity, polar surface area and mo-lecular weight. In general, results of the present research corroborate well with previously determined anti-nociceptive activities of the investigated compounds, pointing out that besides the cis/trans isomerism, anotherset of important parameters should be taken into account when designing new derivatives of C-3 substitutedfentanyl, especially lipophilicity, voluminosity and HBD/A character of the substituents. Accordingly, RP-TLCcan be considered as a valuable asset in the ligand-based drug design

AB  - Considering the health-benefits of berry fruits consumption and increased market demands for food authenticityas one of the most important quality assurances, phenolic profiling by high-performance thin layer chroma-tography and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry was combinedwith multivariate analysis for phytochemical characterization and intercultivar discrimination of cultivatedberry seeds. The phenolic profiles of 45 berry seeds from nine genuine Serbian cultivated fruit species (straw-berry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, cape gooseberry, chokeberry, and goji berry)revealed a good differentiation according to botanical origin. In order to determine biomarkers responsible forthe classification, a total of 103 phenolic compounds were identified, including 53 phenolic acids and theirderivatives, 26 flavonoids and 24 glycosides. Biomarkers derived from the phenolic profile of berry seeds provedto be a powerful tool in the authentication of botanical origin, and may be useful in detection of frauds in berry-based seed-containing product.

AB  - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy.

For the purpose of this study, the blueberry cultivars ‘Duke’, ‘Chandler’ and ‘Bluecrop’ were picked at four different times. The aim of the study was to compare the cultivars and determine the best time for picking fruits for table consumption and to produce berries that can be used as functional foods with elevated levels of bioactive compounds. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the most influential traits for distinguishing different times of harvest in the ‘Duke’ cultivar were sorbitol, glucose, sucrose, and turanose; for the cultivar ‘Chandler’, they were caffeic acid, aesculetin, and quercetin; for the ‘Bluecrop’, they were fructose, maltose, radical scavenging activity, and quercetin. Blueberry fruits aimed for table consumption were those harvested in the first two pickings of the cultivar ‘Duke’, in the first and third of the ‘Bluecrop’, and in the third picking time of the cultivar ‘Chandler’, due to the highest fruit size and very high level of sugar (mostly glucose and fructose). ‘Duke’ berries from the second and third harvest (high level of total phenolic content, radical scavenging activity, total anthocyanins, aesculin, quercetin, and isorhamnetin), ‘Chandler’ from the first and third (the highest p-hydroxybenzoic acid, aesculetin, caffeic acid, phloridzin, kaempferol, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, rutin, and quercetin) and ‘Bluecrop’ from the third harvest (highest level of total phenolics, radical scavenging activity, quercetin, rutin, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, and isorhamnetin) had the highest levels of health-promoting compounds.

expressed as RF and mobile phase pH. Calculated structural descriptors together with the retention indices, were
subjected to the principal component analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA, in order to provide
basic insights into the similarities among the studied compounds. The blood – brain barrier (BBB) permeation
was investigated in the function of experimentally obtained values of lipophilicity, polar surface area and mo-
lecular weight. In general, results of the present research corroborate well with previously determined anti-
nociceptive activities of the investigated compounds, pointing out that besides the cis/trans isomerism, another
set of important parameters should be taken into account when designing new derivatives of C-3 substituted
fentanyl, especially lipophilicity, voluminosity and HBD/A character of the substituents. Accordingly, RP-TLC
can be considered as a valuable asset in the ligand-based drug design

AB  - Strawberries are an important fruit in the European diet because of their unique taste and high content of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. The anthocyanins are known to be colorful phenolics in strawberries. In 17 samples of six strawberry cultivars produced in Serbia, i.e., the common varieties Alba, Asia, and Clery as well as promising breeding materials (11.29.11, 11.34.6, and 11.39.3), the anthocyanin profile as well as antimicrobial and antioxidative activity profiles were determined. All investigated extracts showed antioxidative and antibacterial activities against Gram-negative Aliivibrio fischeri. The responses were quite similar in number and intensity. The HPTLC-DPPH• scavenging assay and HPTLC-Aliivibrio fischeri bioassay coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry identified pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside (Pg-3-glc) as the main anthocyanin and prominent antioxidative and antimicrobial compound in strawberries. The density functional theory calculations at the M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) level showed that Pg-3-glc quenches free radicals via sequential proton loss electron transfer mechanism in water and in pentyl ethanoate, where the 5-OH group is the most reactive site for proton and hydrogen atom transfer. The results were confirmed via spectrophotometry. The highest total phenolic content was found in Clery and 11.39.3, while statistically significant differences between the genotypes regarding the antioxidant activity were not confirmed. Although very similar in the anthocyanin, antioxidative, and antimicrobial profile patterns, the strawberry genotypes were successfully classified using principal component analysis.

AB  - The main objectives of this research were to (i) investigate the concentration; (ii) characterize the distribution;
(iii) determine the sources apportionment; (iv) estimate environmental and health risks of heavy metals in soil
from mountain beech forest. A total of 76 soil samples from 20 pure beech forest stands from Bosnia and Her-
zegovina (BA), Bulgaria (BG), Check Republic (CZ), Germany (DE), Italy (IT), Poland (PL), Romania (RO), Serbia
(RS), Slovakia (SK), Slovenia (SL), and Spain (ES) were collected. The content of major elements was measured
by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). The content of heavy metals was measured by inductively coupled
plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES). Heavy metals had a specific concentration range, which fol-
lowed in soil samples from depth 0–40 cm the common order (low to high): Hg < Cd < As < Co < Pb < Ni < Cu
< Cr < Zn, and from depth 40–80 cm: Hg < Cd < As < Pb < Co < Ni < Cu < Cr < Zn. The grouping of the
examined parameters according to rock types, soil types, and localities indicated the separation of carbonate
rocks from other substrates, luvisol, and rendzina from other soil types, and samples from BA, SL, and IT from
other localities. According to sources apportionment As, Pb and Zn are of anthropogenic origin, Cd, Co, Cr, and Ni are of geogenic origin, while the middle position of Cu and Hg indicates a combined contribution of both
sources. Elements Cd and Hg indicated severe to extremely severe enrichment with a mean value of 24.3 and
70.6, respectively. Based on the determined values Ni, Cr, As and Cd do not pose a health risk.

One of them, Ocimum basilicum L., commonly known as basil, has a vital role due to its various medicinal goods. It is best known as a plant with pharmacological activities, but also as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and larvicidal agent. Although it has been traditionally used in Serbia in traditional medicine for centuries as an insecticidal, antibacterial, and antifungal plant as well as a traditional culinary plant, none of the O. basilicum varieties have been commercialised until today. There are significant numbers of information across the world that oils and by-products are part of the global market, but no references to the essential oil composition of Serbian plants were found. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of essential oil and hydrolate of two different varieties: O. basilicum var. genovese and Ocimum. basilicum var. minimum originating from Serbia for further industrial production of antimicrobial- and/or antioxidant-valued products. The results of this study confirm that essential oils of O. basilicum var. genovese and var. minimum represent a significant source of bioactive compounds, especially linalool, with a high rate of biological activities. Similar behaviour is observed for hydrolates, which are the by-product of the essential oil distillation process and can be utilised as bioactive-rich waste in further investigation.

All investigated extracts showed antioxidative and antibacterial activities against Gram-negative Aliivibrio fischeri. The responses were quite similar in number and intensity. The HPTLC-DPPH• scavenging assay and HPTLC-Aliivibrio fischeri bioassay coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry identified pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside (Pg-3-glc) as the main anthocyanin and prominent antioxidative and antimicrobial compound in strawberries. The density functional theory calculations at the M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) level showed that Pg-3-glc quenches free radicals via sequential proton loss electron transfer mechanism in water and in pentyl ethanoate, where the 5-OH group is the most reactive site for proton and hydrogen atom transfer. The results were confirmed via spectrophotometry. The highest total phenolic content was found in Clery and 11.39.3, while statistically significant differences between the genotypes regarding the antioxidant activity were not confirmed. Although very similar in the anthocyanin, antioxidative, and antimicrobial profile patterns, the strawberry genotypes were successfully classified using principal component analysis.

Among all nine cloned adrenoceptor subtypes and the subsequent development of animal models, a significant target for various neurological conditions treatment is alpha1-adrenergic receptors. 2-{[4-(2-Methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl]alkyl}-1H-benzo[d]imidazoles, their 5 substituted derivatives, and structurally similar, arylpiperazine based alpha1-adrenergic receptors antagonists (trazodone, naftopidil, and urapidil) have been subjects of comparative analysis. Most of the novel compounds showed alpha1-adrenergic affinity in the range from 22 nM to 250 nM. The in silico docking and molecular dynamics simulations, binding data together with absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) calculations identified the promising lead compounds. The results brought out the conclusions which allowed us to propose a rationale for the activity of these molecules and to highlight six compounds (2-5, 8, and 12) that exhibited an acceptable pharmacokinetic profile to the advanced investigation as the potential alpha1-adrenergic receptor antagonists.

The results brought out the conclusions which allowed us to propose a rationale for the activity of these molecules and to highlight six compounds (2-5, 8, and 12) that exhibited an acceptable pharmacokinetic profile to the advanced investigation as the potential alpha1-adrenergic receptor antagonists.",

AB  - Quality control, nutritional value and the monitoring of hazardous residues in honey bee- products have become
major topics for both producers and consumers. Due to its potential role in human health, bee-products rich in
bioactive compounds are becoming increasingly popular. This review aims to provide an overview of thin-layer
chromatography methods used in quality control, authenticity testing and chemical profiling of bee-products in
order to help scientists engaged in the field of bee-products chemistry to utilize the advantages of this technique
in the detection and elimination of fraudulent practices in bee-product manufacturing. Recently, hyphenation of
thin-layer chromatography, image analysis and chemometrics support bee-products analysis by simultaneous determination of analytes with different detection principles, identification of individual
bioactive compounds as well as structure elucidation of compounds. Highlighted opportunities of thin-layer
chromatography could encourage further investigations that would lead to improvements in the detection and
elimination of marketing fraudulent practices.

AB  - The European Commission requires that fruit products distributed on the market meet standards of high quality and authenticity. For the quality assessment of apricot products susceptible to food fraud, an environmentally friendly, simple and cost-effective analytical profiling was developed by high-performance thin-layer chromatography multi-imaging (HPTLC-FLD/Vis). The new phytochemical profiling was applied for analysis of authentic samples (7 apricot and 5 pumpkin samples) and simulated adulterated products (11 mixture samples prepared by addition of 2.5–53% pooled pumpkin to pooled apricot). Based on the analytical eco-scale assessment, the HPTLC-FLD/Vis method was proven as an excellent green analytical method with low energy and solvent consumption. Chemometric data analysis confirmed the difference between apricot and apricot-pumpkin mixtures based on the phytochemical profile. Chemical markers responsible for their differentiation were identified. The results indicated that frauds by adding pumpkin to apricot products can be detected at added contents as low as 2.5%.

AB  - Product authentication is one of the most important food quality assurances. Considering the importance of
consumption of berry fruits with proven health-beneficial properties, high sensory values and rich composition in
bioactive substances, the aim of this study was to evaluate a straightforward and simple procedure for the protein
fingerprinting of berry seeds. For this purpose, protein profiles of 45 samples of genuine berry fruit cultivars
(strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, chokeberry, cape gooseberry, and
gojiberry) were analyzed by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis in combination with advanced chemometric tools. The
most important parameters for discrimination among berry seeds were polypeptides at 12.8; 15.1; 25.0; 26.4;
30.0; 41.8; 44.4; 46.0; 48.5; 52.3 and 56.4 kDa. Biomarkers obtained from the protein profile of berry seeds
proved to be a powerful tool in the authentication of their botanical origin, as well as for potential detection of
berry-based products adulteration

E. cicutarium has antimicrobial activity, with a particular emphasis on clinical S. aureus strains—
both the methicillin sensitive (MSSA) and the methicillin resistant (MRSA) S. aureus. Experimental
design consisted of general methods (the serial microdilution broth assay and the agar well diffusion
assay), as well as observing bactericidal/bacteriostatic activity through time (the “time‐kill”
assay), investigating the effect on cell wall integrity and biofilm formation, and modulation of bacterial
hemolysis. Observed antibacterial activity from above‐described methods led to further activity‐
guided fractionation of water and methanol extracts using bioautography coupled with UHPLCLTQ
OrbiTrap MS4. It was determined that active fractions are predominantly formed by gallic acid
derivatives and flavonol glycosides. Among the most active phytochemicals, galloyl‐shikimic acid
was identified as the most abundant compound. These results point to a direct connection between
galloyl‐shikimic acid and the observed E. cicutarium antibacterial activity, and open several new
research approaches for future investigation

AB  - Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) honey (STH) is widely used as part of traditional medicine
in the Mediterranean area, especially in the treatment of wounds, burns and infections. In
this study, we investigated the cyto-/genoprotective properties of STH at cell level following
short-term exposure to UVB radiation at 2 kJ/m2. Isolated human peripheral blood lymphocytes
(PBL) were selected as model cells. Phenolics in STH were determined using an ultrahigh-
performance liquid chromatograph (UHPLC) coupled to a linear ion trap-Orbitrap hybrid
mass spectrometer (LTQ Orbitrap MS), while homogentisic acid (HGA) was quantified using a
gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Primary DNA damage in PBLs treated with
STH before and after irradiation was assessed by alkaline comet assay, while their viability
was determined using the apoptosis/necrosis assay. The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive
substances (TBARS) and glutathione (GSH) were determined in plasma samples. STH applied
as pre-treatment at a concentration equivalent to its average daily portion efficiently counteracted
the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects and diminished UVB-induced oxidative stress.
Post-radiation treatment with STH was not as beneficial. Protective effects could be associated
to the complex phytochemical profile of STH and the high content of HGA (306.8mg/
kg). It was confirmed that an intake of a complex mixture of bioactive constituents as STH
prior to potential cyto/genotoxic insults stimulated a broad-spectrum of protective mechanisms,
including intracellular antioxidative defence and DNA repair systems that helped pretreated
cells to counteract harmful exposures more efficiently.

The content of rutin and quercetin in the flower was also determined to check the quality of the herbal drug used, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the extraction.ResultsThe extraction of rutin and quercetin, in a honey sample using 10% of the Sophora flower, stored at room temperature, for 40 days, was the most intense one (150.24 mg/kg of rutin and 1338.93 mg/kg of quercetin). Sophora flower corresponds to the pharmacopoeia requirements for the quality of an herbal drug. The concentrations of rutin and quercetin in acacia honey were 0.08 and 0.14 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of rutin in honey from the melliferous pasture of the Sophora flower was 0.40 mg/kg, while quercetin was below the detection limit (0.1 mg/kg).ConclusionsHoney, enriched with rutin and quercetin from Sophora flower, had sensory acceptability and pleasant taste and aroma.

AB  - Med je prirodna slatka supstanca koju proizvode pčele od različitih sekreta biljaka, i u svom hemijskom sastavu sadrži više od 200 različitih organskih i neorganskih jedinjenja, kao što su ugljeni hidrati, voda, proteini, organske kiseline, vitamini, minerali, fenolna i isparljiva jedinjenja. Iako organske kiseline čine oko 0,5% mase meda, ove komponente daju važan doprinos senzorskim svojstvima kao što su boja i ukus, i fizičkim i hemijskim svojstvima kao što su pH vrednost, kiselost i električna provodljivost. Uprkos njihovoj važnosti, u raspoloživoj literaturi postoji relativno malo dostupnih informacija o organskim kiselinama u medu. Codex alimentarius kao i Pravilnik o kvalitetu meda i drugih proizvoda pčela ne pružaju informacije o sadržaju limunske kiseline u medu. Imajući u vidu mogućnost manipulacije meda limunskom kiselinom, predmet ovog rada je razvoj metode za određivanje citrata u medu i njena primena za identifikovanje falsifikovanog meda. U radu je izvršena kvantitativna analiza sadržaja citrata jonskom hromatografijom sa konduktometrijskom detekcijom u 25 uzoraka meda od bagrema i 9 uzoraka invertnog sirupa. Utvrđena količina citrata u uzorcima meda je bila u rasponu od 10,82 mg/kg do 55,74 mg/kg, dok je u slučaju invertnih sirupa raspon bio od 300,80 mg/kg do 948,55 mg/kg. Validacijom metode određen je opseg koncentracije citrata u prirodnom bagremovom medu i invertnom sirupu, na osnovu čega je po prvi put ukazano na mogućnost upotrebe sadržaja citrata kao indikatora falsifikata meda invertnim sirupom.

AB  - The peach stones and kernels are easily available biowaste which could be useful for the extraction of nutritionally important compounds such as fatty acids. Except in industry, characterization of stones and kernels could be useful in pomology to describe different cultivars, and for selecting new parents in a breeding program. A total of 25 samples of stones and kernels from various peach cultivars that differed in origin and ripening time, but growing in the same climatic conditions, were characterized by fatty acids composition and physical properties. This work confirmed that unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic fatty acids) were the most represented in peach kernel oil and their content depended of peach genotype. Additionally, the fatty acids in combination with length, weight, and moisture of peach kernels could be used as a parameter of authenticity assessment. This research may contribute for the peach cultivar discrimination and recommendation of cultivars/genotypes with high kernel quality which could be used for the extractions of oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids and further use in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Besides, selected cultivars could be used in breeding programs, for creating new genotypes for oil production.

AB  - Sweet maize has worldwide importance due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. In order to provide valuable health-related information to consumers, the phytochemicals profile of raw sweet maize kernels and those exposed to different treatments (cooking, frozen storage before cooking, sucrose addition during cooking, and blanching) was examined herein. Thus, carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids content was determined by liquid chromatography, while the content of water soluble sugars was analyzed by anion exchange chromatography. In response to immediate cooking, as well as, to blanching prior to shorter frozen storage and cooking afterwards, all hybrids exhibited a significant decrease in carotenoids, and a significant increase in concentration of tocopherols, fructose, glucose, protocatechuic, ferulic and p-coumaric acids, in comparison to the fresh samples. However, treatments with blanching prior to longer frozen storage and cooking afterwards, contributed only to increased tocopherols content. Distinct grouping of processed samples in comparison to their corresponding control samples, revealed the existence of unique linkage between changes in phytochemicals content upon treatment in a hybrid-dependent manner. Combined blanching prior to shorter frozen storage with sucrose addition during cooking is highly recommended as a potent tool for phytochemicals enhancement.

AB  - To replace common organic solvents that present inherent toxicity and have high volatility and to improve the extraction efficiency, a range of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were evaluated for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Agrimonia eupatoria. Screening of NADES efficiency was carried out based on the total phenolic and flavonoid content and radical-scavenging activity, determined by spectrophotometry, as well as phenolic compounds quantified, obtained using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector and a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Increased extraction efficiency when compared with organic solvent was achieved using NADES mixtures choline chloride (ChCl):urea 1:2 and choline chloride:glycerol 1:1. Flavonol glycosides were the most abundant compounds in all extracts. The COSMO-RS model provided insights into the most important intermolecular interactions that drive the extraction process. Moreover, it could explain the extraction efficiency of flavonol glycosides using ChCl:glycerol NADES. The current article offers experimental evidence and mechanistic insights for the selection of optimal NADES to extract bioactive components from Agrimonia eupatoria. © 2022 by the authors.
